Nevada Wolf Pack vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders | What We Know
(1-1, 1-0) |
Date | September 24, 2011 |
![]() (2-0, 0-0)) |
OPENING LINE | Texas Tech by 21.
PRIOR OPPONENTS | Most programs opened the weekend of September 3rd, but Nevada waited a week and opened with a 20-69 loss at the Oregon Ducks (SBN coverage), and played the San Jose St. Spartans this past weekend and won a low-scoring affiar, 17-14 (SBN coverage).
WHAT TEXAS TECH CAN EXPECT | The offense will be led by QB Tyler Lantrip, who was okay, nothing spectacular, against Oregon and was just okay against SJS. Nevada is led by RB Mike Ball, but go ahead and throw in RB Stefphon Jefferson, QB Cody Fajardo and Lantrip as additional primary rushing threats. They all help lead the #7 in the nation rushing attack and the #30 total offense in the country. Again, because of the relative mediocre peformance of Lantrip, this is primarily a rushing team and Ball is #21 in the nation in yards per game at 111.50 and Jefferson is #84 in the nation at 86.50. Nevada can run the ball. WR Rishard Matthews and Shane Anderson lead the way catching the ball, but these aren't your primary offensive threats. The problem for Nevada is that the defense was non-existant against a really good Oregon team, but did show up against San Jose St. Using two games as your sample size is always scary, but thus far, the Wolf Pack are 106th in the nation in total defense, but this result is skewed because of the Oregon game. Nevada was so much better against San Jose St., allowing just 290 total yards on the day compared to 603 against Oregon. So those nationally ranked numbers are completely skewed. Individually, Nevada is led by linebackers Brandon Marshall and Jeremiah Green. DL Brett Roy does already have 3 TFL and is the only player to register a sack (2.0) for the team. The other linebacker, James-Michael Johnson has 2 TFL.
OPPONENT PLAYERS SPOTLIGHT | RB Mike Ball is the latest in a long line of excellent Nevada running backs. As mentioned above, he's averaging 111.50 yards per game, 2 touchdowns and averaging 5.2 yards per carry. He's not a receiving threat as he only has 1 reception for 5 yards (which went for a touchdown), but that Nevada offense churns out good running backs and would expect the Wolf Pack to continue to look to Ball against Texas Tech.

I think the Wolf Pack may be tougher than advertised
I don’t think these guys will be any push over. Wasn’t aware the head coach Chris Ault is also the Athletic director..that’s a load of work..
“Now in his eighth season of his third stint at the helm of his alma mater, Ault has turned the corner in restoring championship-caliber football to the University of Nevada. With sixth straight bowl appearances in tow and armed with the momentum created by the historic 2010 season, excitement surrounds Ault and the Wolf Pack as it prepares for another run at the conference championship and bowl bid in 2011.”
Expect a Texas State type ground attack (only better) designed to eat clock and attempt to strangle the Tech offensve scoring opportunities.
"do routine things routinely"
he took a pay cut last year so Nevada could hang on to him in the face of budget cuts
after he was named conference Coach of the Year. Chris Ault loves him some Wolfpack Football.

Small correction
He was the AD at a couple of different times, but never both AD and coach simultaneously.

Here is a team that might be a bit more competitive...
They have a qb who might be a bit more settled than our prior two matches….although he also is on his 3rd career start ( I am not giving much credit to anything Doege did while Potts was qb, Doege was forced onto the field, he was not ready, it was circumstances more than ability )
We get to play the guy who created the pistola, the offense is mature, everyone playing has seen only this offense from their first day on campus.
Ault is a good football coach.
If anything we will see the offense using the run to set-up a pass here and there…much pressure for our linebackers and secondary.
I wonder how physical does their OL play compared to ours ????
I have to believe that their defense is in a heap of trouble !!! We need to come out of this game with multiple receivers getting 100+ yards…along with 150 yards + on the ground….

San Jose State is about at the level of Texas State IMO.
I’m a bit surprised at just how far Nevada has fallen. I expected a drop off, as they lost some very good players, but I’m afraid I don’t share the same level of respect as some others have expressed. I think we may have gotten an easier tune up that first expected. I also think that given film to study and now that we’ve had 2 games to work on the D – we should be much better prepared for their offense.

Great...
Just what we didn’t need… the loss of defensive players on an already thin defense… especially Fehoko who had tons of potential…

Not to be one to keep downing someone.
But I’m calling it here first. Don’t be surprised if Scotty is gone before long too. I don’t know what the circumstances were to caused this to happen, but I do know that Sam and Scotty are pretty close. Maybe I’m just psychic, I don’t know.
I wonder why they voluntarily quit the team?
I know they were not selected as first teamers in these initial games. But, to quit the team for that reason alone shows poor character. In a season you never know how injuries will play out. If they did not quit they could have been in the line up next week.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
have fun with nevada
their coach is great but they are not anywhere close to a fine tuned machine, which they need to be to win against talent. red raiders win big, but nevada should be improved (it is that week for marked improvement for all teams) so don’t hang your heads if its not 60-6. have fun!
Anyone
see Bront Bird on the sidelines of the SanDIego game yesterday? I did.

I think Bird will make it at the NFL level, he was just a victim of the defensive system last year under willis.

I was concerned about the Nevada game before the season, but after following them for two weeks, not anymore.
This is not the same team without Koepernick.
I was also impressed with our road performance against UNM. UNM is awful – I mean really awful – but our guys executed well.
I think we’ll give up a bunch of yards but I just don’t think this one will be very close 49-21.
Playing against the pistol will be good experience for games down the road.

But if you’re first, you’re Seth Doege!

I think Seth ought to change...
Recs to Doeges. So, a bad ass post might get like 9 Doeges, which is the equivalent of 500 younger McCoy brothers. Anyway, for your post here RdrPwr…

10% MORE DOEGE’S!!!!!!!!
Teach me how to Doege teach me teach me how to Doege!!!
Nevada has not been able to match the awesomeness of their team from last year.
As a result, I feel the Red Raiders, playing at home and starting to really understand what the coaches want, will be able to do very well against an obviously lesser defense than we saw last year from Nevada. Their offense, while running a lot, is very poor when forced to pass. If Tech’s defense can stuff them on 1st & 2nd downs, forcing them to pass, I see where we could gain a few turnovers id the game. We may not win by 36, but this one will not even be close, despite an arguably better head coach walking the opposite sideline.

Did anyone else notice
in the NM game we appeared to go back to the wider splits? I haven’t gone back and watched the entire game, but in the part I saw, the splits seemed to be closer to pre-Brown splits.

Nothing Spectacular Against Oregon???
Nevada had over 500 yards & 3 TDs again Oregon. That is pretty good, blowout or not. Their D was unspectacular.
This should be a test for our D. I know it won’t be viewed that way & the yards & points they get will be a black mark against our D, but Nevada’s O should be relatively successful against our D. Not enough to win & their D will be bad enough to make the spread look large.
