CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT
Tuberville says work still being done to keep conference intact | Red Raiders | Coaches resigned to Big 12's demise - San Antonio Express-News
Yesterday, three coaches expressed their disdain for how conference realignment was shaping up:  Tuberville, UT's Mack Brown and KSU's Bill Snyder.  Brown should contact his bosses about any issues he has.

The Geography of College Football Fans (and Realignment Chaos) - NYTimes.com | CommonCensus Hotspot Sports Map
These were interesting links from yesterday and affirms that Texas Tech does in fact have football fans.  The study is based on the second link, which is a website vote as to whether or not they are fans and so the data has potential to be incredibly flawed.  I did the 200 mile radius for the DFW area and came up with the map to the right (full size here).  Overall, this means that, according to the numbers, Texas Tech has the #33 largest fanbase and would be the #4 fanbase if Texas Tech moved to the Pac-12 (although would then be behind UT and OU).

Texas And Conference Realignment: ACC Or Pac-12? | SportsGrid
All you need is this quote from the NY Times Pete Thamel:  "inviting Texas to your conference could be like inviting Hannibal Lecter to a dinner party."  Thamel also says that UT is like the prettiest girl in high school who can't get a date to the prom.

Orangebloods.com - Source: Texas will make decision within two weeks
So to contrast the SportsGrid link, here's this, from OB.com's Chip Brown who writes that Texas will drink all of your milkshakes:

The Longhorns' first option remains holding the Big 12 together with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in it, the source said. The Big 12's TV partners (ABC/ESPN and Fox) are not interested in continuing their current contracts with the Big 12 if Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas are not all in the league, sources said.

Brown also says that the ACC is still on the table (or UT wants everyone to think the ACC is still on the table), but the ACC doesn't want Texas Tech:

A second source confirmed to Orangebloods.com that the Atlantic Coast Conference remains interested in Texas - but without Texas Tech. The source said the ACC would consider a Texas-Kansas or Texas-Missouri combination. But the ACC has real concerns about Texas Tech's academic standing. (Tech was ranked No. 160 in the latest U.S. News and World report rankings of America's top colleges and universities.)

As we all know, conference realignment isn't about academics.

The Longhorns are not going to push the Pac-12 around. Scott and the conference presidents know plenty well what's happened in the previous two conferences they've been in, and they're not about to let Texas go and ruin their tidy little conference deal with their own impositions on revenue sharing. Texas will have to do it the Pac-12's way, which means folding the LHN up and moving back into the fold.

Doege climbing Big 12 charts;

In addition to his Player of the Week honors, Doege is climbing the charts in the Big 12. I think the most important stat is 8 touch down passes, and no interceptions. He is also ranked 28th in the nation in total passing yards, but that is with only two games.

3rd in total offense at 360 yards per game.
2nd in passing average per game at 363.5 apg
2nd in passing efficiency at 195.4, and he is ranked number two in the country behind Baylor RGIII

I am really excited about what this offense can do over the next few weeks. I know were not supposed to look ahead, but that showdown with ATM could be a College Game Day spectacular.

I still cannot stop laughing

… at all the options that uT says they have (through their mouthpieces at Orangebloods, ESPN, and on BON) when in fact that have basically 1. If the Big-12 is to be saved, which is what they really want, it won’t be according to uT’s preferences. It will be to the satisfaction of OU.

The only other option is the Pac, and that will be according to what Larry Scott says.

This ACC talk is still garbage. Everyone who knows anyone who knows anything in the ACC is not even talking like Texas is an option. The only people who have ever seriously talked ACC are the speculators, and this “they want us but not Tech” is garbage.

We are seeing the reason that all of College Football hates the Longhorns, and why this whole realignment phase is about one thing – gutting the LHN. That is all that this is about.

It is interesting that there are a fair amount of uT fans who get this, and who keep telling their people to quit being idiots.

If UT realy wanted to save the Big 12; all they have to do is announce they are staying.

From what I have read, OU and OSU just want a stable conference that expands to 12 teams, and without the Thorns agreeing, what are OU and OSU supposed to do. All they are asking for is:

1. Equal Revenue sharing.
2. Turn the LHN into Big 12 Network. (which is what they will have to do if they go anywhere else)

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

by Btech on Sep 20, 2011 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

That's the point.

UT could save the conference, but they will have to give up what they have. The difference is that to do that and stay with the Big-12 would be an out and out admission of failure. To give up the LHN and go to the Pac-12 (which will mean more money), they can spin it however they want.

I think it is too late, but the Whorns could still save the Big-12 by humbling themselves and doing what they should have done all along. Which means they won’t.

Called out

I think OU, OSU, and maybe Tech have essentially “called out” ut. Basically, they have collectivly said, “either play fair, or we are taking our toys and going to play in the other sandbox”.

If ut wants to stay in an AQ confrence they are going to have to fold the LHN and agree to equal revenue sharing. Whether thats in a renegotiated Big 12, or PAC XX remains to be seen. If it’s a renegotiated Big 12, then I look for a media spin about how they (ut) are doing this for the good of the confrence because they are such great and noble partners.

To me it is obvious...

Some can call it black helicopter conspiracy stuff, but the coincidence theory doesn’t fly with me. Boren was a US senator, and he doesn’t come out and start the fire under Texas on accident. He knew what he was doing. Larry Scott and his people are not reacting to what is happening. I don’t believe that for a second. Basically, we all praise these people for being brilliant, then we accept a theory that says they just fell into a perfect situation where Texas gets neutered. I’ll take the black helicopter theory. I honestly believe that the Grassy Knoll 3 (Tech, OU, and OSU) colluded with the Pac-12. It won’t hold up in court, thank God, but it is the only theory that I can accept, since coincidence theory never has worked for me.

You make a good point.

While I personally believe in Divine Intervention, I don’t know if this is truly ut feeling the wrath. You may be right, The Grassy Knoll 3 would not have called out UT and threaten to leave if they didn’t have some leverage.

I think OU is calling the shots.

And I think there was a brain trust in the Pac that devised the plan. And I think Tech and OSU were called in on it (this explains Tech and Okie Lite’s silence) and were told what they were going to do. I don’t think the Pac and OU were bluffing. I think they were signed, sealed, and delivered and Texas couldn’t believe that the Grassy Knoll 3 screwed them.

I love to think about it, and the movie I could write about it.

Mackey

I am really curious about what is going on with Mackey. After a pretty solid outing, he’s out for what may be a season-ending injury. Then, he shows up on the sideline in Albuquerque fully dressed out (when uninjured players are left home). This week, Mackey is healing much sooner than expected although he won’t be available “this week”. I’m not one to generally be looking for “black helicopters”, but I suspect CTT may be playing some media/roster games and plans to unveil the two-headed Mackey/Smith beast against the aggots. Please let this be true . . . and please don’t let the ladies and children be scarred by the ensuing carnage.

by CRV on Sep 20, 2011 8:57 AM CDT reply actions

I don’t believe that there’s anything going on other than Mackey being hurt, but I may be naive. I do think it is encouraging that he’s traveling with the team and I also think that if he’s taking a flight with a punctured lung (I’ve thought that it’s probably not a good idea to fly with a punctured lung) that he’s healing faster than initially thought. Take a look at what Jackson Richards had to say about Mackey (from the linked press conference):

JACKSON RICHARDS: You know, Mackey’s a great player, and I’m just doing my best to fill in his spot and hopefully he’ll be back soon. He’s a really hard worker. He’s a really humble guy. We miss him a lot on the field. But we know he’ll be back soon. And I have confidence I can hold my own until he gets back. And when he gets back it will be that much better. Whenever he got hurt he told me he’d be my biggest fan until he got back. He’s that kind of guy. He’s real supportive of his team. He’s definitely not the guy sitting over there sobbing in the corner. He’s doing whatever he can to get back as fast as he can and make a difference.

FREE SCOTTY

The Macky/Smith beast will be a thing of beauty against the aggots. Stopping the run between the tackles and covering the deep balls will be the keys to that game. Having the Mackey/Smith Manimal to unleash on Tannehill will help the DB’s. Hopefully, they won’t have time to get beat deep because Tannehill will be out with a concusion or running for his life 20 yrds behing the line.

All our DE’s are playing pretty stout so far (granted the level of competition hasn’t been great). I will be interested to see how well our D perfoms aginst Nevade this week. They seem to be a notch up the ladder in skill and they run thier system really well. D line and LB’s need to have a great game.

(Tech was ranked No. 160 in the latest U.S. News and World report rankings of America’s top colleges and universities.) It’s doubtful Texas would try to find a conference home without Texas Tech, although a source close to Tech has said the Red Raiders have received some attention from the SEC as a possible partner with Texas A&M.
But the leading option for Texas continues to be the Pac-12, which would include Texas Tech, multiple sources said.

Good read from SBN’s Bill Connelly on conference realignment:

http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/2011/9/20/2437303/college-conference-realignment-big-12-oklahoma

I’ve said for a while now that Oklahoma holds all the cards when it comes to conference Armageddon realignment. They will either be moving to a new Pac-XX Conference or staying in a Big 12 that has changed its approach to revenue and equality. It appears that if Texas (and, technically, the other remaining schools, but really Texas) is willing to compromise in terms of revenue (and power) sharing, then there is still an avenue for the Big 12’s survival. And as we discussed yesterday, if the conference somehow survives the next few weeks, then expansion candidates may have just become available.

This is what I've been saying...

This whole round of realignment has been about castrating BEVO (of course Bevo has always been castrated, but play along anyway). It seems impossible to a lot of people, but I truly believe that this all will turn out for the best, because it has been all about stopping uT’s power plays. And now they are hedged in and they cannot get out. Bill Connelly and the earlier article you posted by the Pac-12 blogger have it exactly right. The only road left open where uT keeps the LHN intact and the way they want it is Independence, and that is the road with the highest probability of failure.

It is too bad that so many are missing this moment because of all of the spin and re-direction coming out of Austin, and because of Tech fans natural predilection to negativity and low self-esteem. uT is being humbled before your eyes. They may not ACT HUMBLE, but the truth is what it is.

About 1 in 3 longhorn fans I’ve read actually understand this. It seems the rest of the blogosphere is starting to get it too.

Nobody trusts uT. Nobody wants to be in a conference with them where they are not shackled and muzzled. Nobody cares that they think they are god. uT’s hegemony over sports in Texas and outside of that is over. We are seeing that happen right now. This is not pollyanna stuff, this is what has been planned for weeks now, and college football AD’s and Conference leaders have been in on it… colluded… against Texas because they have all had enough.

We may stay in the Big-12, or we may go to the Pac-16, but either way, things are not going to be like they were.

I’ll stop now. But I’m happy, even if very few other people are

by LondonRaider on Sep 20, 2011 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I absolutely believe that the Pac-12 wants Texas.

I’ve said that all along. But it is about getting cocky, jerkoff Texas, which none of them want, and they won’t put up with — or a newly castrated Texas, which is what they want.

I’ve said over and over again that the Pac wants Texas. But they will not take Texas as is… just will… not… happen.

And yes, I do think the Pac will take the Grassy Knoll 3 without Texas if they have to. The die is cast, and the other conferences have already launched.

So this isn’t about whether the Pac wants Texas, they do. But if someone says they aren’t taking the Grassy Knoll 3 without Texas, I think that this is an error, and is contrary to what almost everyone that isn’t in Austin is saying.

It also seems like if the Big12 survives this year, unlike last, it should be done with future stability in mind. That is a very good thing. I don’t want to go through this year after year.

by bflood36 on Sep 20, 2011 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Tuberville stated multiple times yesterday that his preference is to rebuild the Big 12,

which seems like the right thing for him to say at this point. However, he also said that he asks Hance, Bailey, and Hocutt daily about the situation and implied that they don’t know much more than he does. This is not reassuring.

by TT63 on Sep 20, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I would imagine the admin wants to keep the Big12 alive. The costs for travel for non-revenue sports would take quite a jump if Texas schools would move to say, the PAC.

by bflood36 on Sep 20, 2011 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

It's also about being competitive next year.

Tub’s is building this team to “win championships”. You’ve gotta think that he wants to play next years Big 12 schedule more than having to scout and game plan for PAC XX. They are just now getting comfortable with our Big 12 partner teams. I’m no football genius, but I can’t imagine having to watch film and game plan almost all new teams, and still recruit HS players all at the same time.

I don't think the $$ increase in travel is anywhere near the 5-15 mil a year...

schools will bring in with the Pac. Seriously, no one is going to turn down going to a superconference because of travel expenses. There may be dozens of reasons to want the Big 12 to stay that are valid, but no way any of the Grassy Knoll 3 turn down the Pac because of travel expenses.

I certainly don’t think that Tech would turn down the Pac-12 due to increased travel expenses. I do think that they would rather stay in the Big-12 if a suitable agreement is reached that ensures stability.

The latest number I'm hearing is 35 million a year per school

The golfers & track & field athletes can charter private planes with that kind of money.

I guess what bothers me a little...

… is that we can’t enjoy what we all say we want. We want to see Texas trounced, and BAM!, whomever you think God is gives them a 5-7 season (sure, it would have been great if we beat them, but still). We want to see the LHN gutted or burned down… Voila!, it’s happening. We want to see uT virtually powerless and forced to eat what OU feeds them… Kaching!

This is like those AllState commercials. Let’s add some more…

I want to see Mack Brown eulogize the Big-12 that his school killed.
I want to see Tech beat uT by 30 this year.
I want to see OU humiliate the longhorns.

Actually the only thing I still want in my dreams about all of this, is for Larry Scott to announce that the 3 (OU, OSU, and Tech) are coming, but they (the Pac) decided they’d rather have genital warts than have Texas in their conference, so they are taking someone else. But that may be a dream too far.

Don't forget some ill-will in there

for ESPN. They are the driving force behind the LHN.

and??

no Men’s soccer is a bigger issue than just one school’s funding… there isn’t a men’s Big 12-2 league at all

by kevinkinsler on Sep 20, 2011 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Because

of title 9…you have to even out the funding between women’s and men’s sports and big football programs throw this in a place where there are many men’s sports that can’t make it…not just at one school

by oldschoolraider on Sep 20, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

from my limited research in the last hour

seems it’s a very regional thing as far as which supplementary men’s sports are supported by the universities.

the coasts generally have soccer or lacrosse, the south has baseball, the northern teams do hockey.

The extra PAC-16 funds may provide us the means to add sports for men & women, but at that point it would come down to priorities for money.

with other PAC schools already having men’s teams, it may become an option

by kevinkinsler on Sep 20, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Im wondering

if the sec, big 12,etc are hit harder because our football programs are big time and big time expensive…and that amount has to be offset with women’s sports. A school like Georgetown has a big time basketball program that doesn’t cost and has a womens team to offset it. I know Title 9 is a challenge for everyone, but I think if you spend big bucks on your football program it is that much more difficult.
You could fund several women’s quidich teams for the amount of our football travel

Hubris

These fools still believe they can throw off the blame…

I’ll translate…

Sure ESPN offered a bunch of money, and we took it (I am sick to death of this one… only an immoral sociopath makes this argument).
Sure we were going to get richer, and screw the rest of the conference.
Sure Aggies and others were jealous…

But this didn’t cause the realignment fiasco… it was ESPN.

Because ESPN planted the idea in our heads to put high school games on the LHN, and we didn’t reject it out of hand. So it is ESPN’s fault.

ESPN has their share of blame, but if anyone in Austin thinks that ALL of college football isn’t blaming uT for all of this, they are sincerely deluded.

Realignment is about putting the Longhorns back in the bottle. That is what all of this is about.

Opens up a lot of options for us if that happens.

KC Star reports Mizzou has the 14th invite

The report says SEC is willing to wait for the Big 12 to “implode” if that is what Mizzou needs for their escape. The other news of note is that reports say West Virginia formally applied to both ACC and SEC and was denied by both. Looks like Rutgers and UConn are loading up the U-Hauls headed for the ACC. Texas is running out of options..

Did OU know this when Boren made the fire Beebe comment

and castrate Texas and we’ll stay mess? Can we survive without aggie and tiger? We are a sitting duck with only ou, tt, osu, ut as football names.

I heard Joe Shad on espin say maybe Biren made that comment because Scott may not have the 9 voted he needs to take all of us.

I’ll reiterate my mantra from past few days.
If Scott knows his ultimate goal us 16, why allow new teams to vote? Should have probationary period before voting rights are conferred.

Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!

Everything coming out of the PAC

…says that Larry Scott gets what he wants. He already has the votes. Boren made this quote because he knew it would heap the blame on uT when OU leaves, which is inevitable.

Birmingham News backing KC Star report on MU to SEC

The Birmingham News and the Alabama blog back what was reported in the KC Star earlier, that Mizzou has an invite to the SEC. The Birm. story goes so far as to cite 2 sources saying SEC is already drawing up scenarios that would put TAMU and MU in the SEC West , while moving Auburn to the SEC East.Again, SEC officials are purported willing to wait for the Big12 death before taking MU—if necessary.

SEC’s official denial of this info is rationalized in the paper by saying they want to be quiet so as not to incur another Baylor-like wrath.

by Dr-Cane on Sep 20, 2011 6:58 PM CDT reply actions

Almost every official quote today seems to be institutions posturing in advance of a move

They all are creating the cover to say “We tried everything we could to save the Big 12, but it was too little too late. That left us with no other option”.
