DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-09-22

SSDD:  Part II of conference realignment links are after the jump.

Wanted to give you all a heads-up in that I'm going to the game this weekend.  Woot!  I haven't been back to Lubbock since the SMU game last year (tightened up the extraneous expenses with the adoption) and am excited to be going back to Lubbock.  I'll be leaving Friday after work, which means that I'll be at work early on Friday and probably won't have time to do any links tomorrow morning.  In place of that I'm doing a Q&A with Nevada Wolf Pack blog and all-around terrific site, Silver And Blue Sports.

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT, PART I
Pac-12 expansion spares Big 12 as Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns remain in place - ESPN
I am trying earnestly not to link to ESPN.  I don't know if you have noticed, but there's really no reason to link to ESPN anymore as they don't break news and the opinions found on ESPN aren't normally anything that is required reading, but I wanted to link to Pat Forde's column from yesterday and also give you your moment of zen.  Here's Forde:

Nevertheless, it would behoove Texas to make some concessions -- not just because Oklahoma wants it, but to show its Big 12 brethren that it gives a damn about them.

The Longhorns' steady diet of me-first has left them bloated and indifferent to the feelings of their peers. You can't blame athletic director DeLoss Dodds for capitalizing on his program's abundant successes and rampant popularity, but there has to be some concern for everyone else.

Rubbing your superiority in their faces has been a factor in the departure of 25 percent of the Big 12 over the past year-plus. (And we still don't know for sure what Missouri, itself a fickle and flirtatious corporate partner for over a year, intends to do.) If everyone keeps leaving you, don't you eventually have to look in the mirror and acknowledge that you're part of the problem?

"Texas has got to figure out how to play nice in the sandbox," one Big 12 athletic director told me several weeks ago, when Texas A&M was first agitating to leave for the Southeastern Conference. Officials in other conferences have said for more than a year that they were leery of sharing a league with a school packing such a selfish reputation.

So it's incumbent upon the Big 12's two flagship football schools to be good league partners -- blaming it all on poor Dan Beebe or league-wide jealousy isn't going to solve the situation. But truth be told, even that might not be enough to salvage a conference that has been through this much tumult and infighting.

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
Nevada offense looking to improve upon first, second games | Red Raiders
A preview on the Wolf Pack and Nevada head coach Chris Ault talks about RB Mike Ball:

"Let’s see if he sustains," Ault said. "That’s the key to be a Nevada back. You’ve got to do it every week. I was really pleased with Mike. He was tough all day long, ran hard. Stefphon Jefferson stepped up and played very, very well, which we’ve been expecting. I was pleased with our running backs."

Hmmm.  Nevada may be playing Texas Tech straight up:

Wolf Pack defensive coordinator Andy Buh said the challenge of stopping Texas Tech is stiff. But unlike Nevada's blitz-crazy attempt to stop Oregon, which didn't work, the Pack will take a more conventional approach against the Red Raiders."We'll line up in our base and play good, sound, fundamental football," Buh said. "That's what we're going to try and do against these guys."

TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL
Big 12 preview: Ex-OU guard Michael Neal projects the league - The Dagger - NCAAB Blog - Yahoo! Sports
Texas Tech isn't getting a lot of love during Big 12 week at the Dagger, but when former OU player Michale Neal was asked which coach he would want to play for, this is what he said:

I would still pick Kelvin Sampson. I wouldn't play for anyone besides that man, but if I had to I really like Bill Self and Billy Gillipsie. I think they got the most out of their players night in and night out. When they had Acie Law and Joseph Jones and all those guys, they played unbelievably hard, especially on the defensive end. He got the most out of everybody every night. So those two guys, outside of coach Sampson, would be my pick. You knew you had a battle on your hands every time you played one of their teams.

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT, PART II
Dan Beebe working on agreement to exit as Big 12 commissioner - KansasCity.com
Beebe may be gone today:

"He’s working on his exit package right now," one of the sources, who spoke directly to Beebe, told The Star on Wednesday night.

"A couple of weeks ago he told me privately that if the conference stayed together and he had to go it would be like lifting up a huge weight off his heart."

That source added that Beebe, who is an attorney, "has his best lawyer hat on now."

Latest Big 12 crisis averted, pending reforms and Beebe's seemingly imminent ouster | Big 12 ...
And reportedly set to replace Beebe is former Big 8 commissioner Chuck Neinas:

Multiple league sources predicted Wednesday that Beebe soon will be replaced on an interim basis by Chuck Neinas, a former Big Eight commissioner. Beebe remained on the job Wednesday, said a Big 12 spokesman, and had not resigned. To remove him would require a majority vote of league presidents in today's conference call. His contract was extended in November through June 30, 2015.

So who is Chuck Neinas?  Well, according to RRS.com's Chris Level, he is one of two mentors to Texas Tech AD, Kirby Hocutt:

New #TexasTech athletic director @kirbyhocutt has mentioned that he's had two mentors: Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione and Chuck Neinas.

It's true, when Hocutt was hired at Texas Tech, he said this:

For those times, Hocutt believes he’s steeled himself with some good counsel. Asked to name his biggest influences, Hocutt focused on two: Chuck Neinas, under whom he did a year-plus internship right after graduating Kansas State, and Joe Castiglione, under whom he worked for seven years at Oklahoma.

Neinas, head of the College Football Association when Hocutt was with him, now consults on coach searches, AD searches, even conference expansions. He could put "college sports power broker" on his business card, and no one could disagree. Hocutt regards Castiglione as "the best athletic director in the country," and Castiglione speaks highly of Hocutt.

And most recently, Hocutt hired Neinas to help him with the coaching search at Miami.

DMN's Chuck Carlton tweeted that Neinas is not a bad guy to bring around if the Big 12 might need to re-negotiate television deals:

If you're the Big 12, you're in expansion mode and you may want to re-open your ESPN deal early, Chuck Neinas is not a bad guy to bring in.

So, Neinas was the Big 8 commissioner many years ago, what's he doing now?  Well, he's a matchmaker and check out his list of former employees (hat-tip Crystal Ball Run):  Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt, Texas AD DeLoss Dodds, and BCS head-honcho Bill Hancock.

Tonight’s conference realignment roundup: Q&A style (updated 12:30 a.m.) | Eric Crawford
A good Q&A on whether or not Louisville would be a good team to grab from the crumbling Big East:

Louisville is a name that is being tossed around inside and outside Big 12 circles, but there seems to be no real consensus in the league on which direction to go. Two things on this: First, Oklahoma, reportedly, wants to add BYU, TCU and Air Force, and Oklahoma may be wielding some additional power. Mainly, the Big 12 needs to get its own membership (and leadership) in order before it can go after anyone on the outside. And both of those situations appear to be far from settled. There are some deep rifts, financial and administrative, that still have the landscape of this embattled conference shaking a bit. A lot will certainly ride on who the next commissioner is, if Dan Beebe is indeed out.

But second, and I put some stock in this, if ESPN’s people keep reporting that U of L is on the table, I tend to believe that U of L is on the table. These TV networks, by now, know the value of leagues and know how the value would change with each scenario (see below on how expansion candidates are picked). And while starting next season the Big 12′s main TV deal is with FOX, not ESPN (something for possible candidates to think about), I can’t believe that ESPN wouldn’t have a good handle on who makes sense and who league consultants are saying would work.

The Good News about Conference Realignment today is that we are the hunters, and not the hunted.

Okay, so the WSL is out, and the Big 12 it is. Bebee is out and Neinas is in. Lets just fix this thing once and for all. Equal Revenue Sharing, signed contracts, and hugs and kisses for everyone.

Once our new commissioner is in the fold, which looks like will be by the end of the day, we get to go and pick apart the Big East. Looks like West Virginia and Louisville are just waiting for the invite, as is TCU. OU wants BYU, which for the love of me I do not know why, but either way I think we are going back to 12 teams and a conference champsionship.

Oh, and Just say not to Texas.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

We are the hunters...

Wounded, bleeding, with a leg chopped off, but like the black knight of Monty Python lore, we’ll continue to try and dance swords. Unfortunately, the game we’re hunting is pretty scarce these days and has greener pastures to flee to.

Let’s see what we end up with, and hopefully, it’s not just us ending up as a torso sitting on the ground.

I just don’t see why we can’t get a network together. If UT can get 300mil why can’t the entire conference get sizable money together?

by ST04 on Sep 22, 2011 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Three concerns:

1) The new Big-12 must start down the road of equal revenue sharing for all but 3rd tier TV.
2) OU and UT should be split into separate divisions, and those should be reevaluated every 5-10 years if they become imbalanced. Parity does work.
3) The conf. should start their own TV network. No matter what LHN does.

In Men's BB post -

Neal is still faithful to Oklahoma, stating he thinks they will be in the mix this year. It’s not surprising that TTU is picked last. We return one senior starter, and two sophmore players. Gillispie will have a competitive team even if they do, by chance, finish last this year. Still looking forward to watching them. Only one way to go – UP!

Time to rebuild

Baylor, I think it’s fair to just let A&M have their walking papers at this point. We need to build a 12 member conference and hopefully very quickly. I personally want WVU, BYU and Boise.
I’m very pleased that Beebe is out. I would have had a whole lot more respect for this guy had he played the game fairly even if it would have cost him his job a year ago. Hopefully we get a real leader that looks out for the conference and not just the interests of a few schools. If you call a meeting make sure all schools are represented and not just a few. We all should have a voice. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out and maybe Deloss has a spot for you in Austin.

why does everyone want byu? I think the best option would be Boise (new fan fair), WVU & Louisville ( natural rivalry will build between the two).

by ST04 on Sep 22, 2011 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Because BYU...

has a huge West Coast (and not just Mormon) following. If BYU is Big 12, then OU, Tech, etc. have a West Coast exposure that could actually be bigger than if we played any other West Coast school except USC. Boise is a fine football school, but their impact on the West Coast is akin to TCU’s impact in the Southwest.

by Dr-Cane on Sep 22, 2011 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Boise

I am biased, to get that out of the way first, but Boise has grown a strong following around the West. With USC’s probation, Boise is competing for recruits with Oregon & UW for the most part out West. Oregon, Stanford and Boise have been the teams du jour for the last few years and they all have a lot of momentum. IMO, they would bolster the North Division quite well and at least give Stoops some heartburn if they got in.

by idaho_techsan on Sep 22, 2011 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.....I don't know about exposure....

but with BYU we’d have a brand new bizarre barrel of laughs school to replace A&M.

I realize we all feel this article has a lot of holes in it.

http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/19/the-geography-of-college-football-fans-and-realignment-chaos/?hp

Since it really is the only thing that is out there to debate I use it solely as a starting point. Although, it suggest that Boise has over 100,000 more fans watching games than TCU. The Boise State-Virginia Tech game last year was #1 most watch game by households ever on ESPN and the #2 most watched game by people ever on ESPN. I would say there is some appeal for eyeballs and if Boise actually landed in a BCS conference people would tune in to see if they could truly hack it, IMO.

by idaho_techsan on Sep 22, 2011 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree Boise has made great strides in 10 years, but...

BYU has had a marketable influence in California for 40 years. One thing about BYU during that time is that they have always been pretty consistent—I don’t off hand remember any spells of 2-9 for example. Boise and TCU are definitely the BCS busters of the last few years, but it seems the national media is still a bit skeptical of their staying power. I like both teams. I would ask you though, after Boise, which is the next most popular team in Idaho, from a media standpoint—my outside guess is BYU over Idaho and I-State. Right or wrong?

by Dr-Cane on Sep 22, 2011 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Lot of Oregon and Wazzu grads here. Eastern Idaho will be a lot of BYU fans, proximity and all. Western Idaho is Broncos, Vandals, Cougars, Ducks, Huskies, ZAGS, and Beavers in that order.

My thoughts wasnot really either/or, but both BYU & BSU for the Big 12 North. BYU certainly has more eyeballs as a whole, but with both you get a decent package of fans and travel partners for non-revenue sports.

by idaho_techsan on Sep 22, 2011 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

BYU....

has a pretty solid reputable football program with a decent following. For me these guys would fill in the Colorado departure and WVU would fill in for A&M leaving. If we can get back to 12 decent reputable programs with a championship game this conference has a chance for something good. If we panic and start throwing offers to SMU, Houston or TCU we are watered down IMO. Sorry Frogs but I’m not sold on you guys.

I don't have a warm and fuzzy feeling about any of this Big 12 stuff ...

Which school in their right mind will come into the Big 12 knowing the unspoken rules?

1) Texas is Texas and they can do what they want because they are Texas. Even though the opportunity is there for any school to do the same as Texas, no one has the demographics to convince a network to do it.

2) The commissioner has zero authority to bring conference schools into line for the sake of the conference.

3) Every school has a plan B in place if anymore funny business occurs.

4) There is little trust among conference members.

It just seems to me that the inevitable is being delayed.

BYU is the only school that could make a profit within your rules

“…no one has the demographics to convince a network to do it.” BYU has the demographics, and has already convinced a network.
“zero authority…” works in BYU’s favor; allows the school and church more freedom to operate..
“Every school has a Plan B…” For BYU Big 12 is basically Plan B—if it implodes they go back to MWC or indy, no problem.
“…little trust…” yep, but BYU knows that going in, no big surprise.
Bottom line for BYU—even if league implodes in 2 years the exposure would be positive for BYU. If that happened they have solid backups—unlike some other heavily religious colleges in the Big12. Disclaimer: Not a big BYU supporter or Mormon, just know enough about them from Calif. to know for them it would make good business sense and a minimal risk.

by ST04 on Sep 22, 2011 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Getting back to 12 is important!

Going back to 10 is a must and back to 12 is important due to championship game. Adding a 10th school should be done quickly and while the other 2 could be later the timing may not be any better with the Big East defections. I don’t care for BYU but think it is a good add because they do bring a lot of exposure. Because of defections in the Big East the option to add Louisville and WVU might not be any better, both are good additions and fit geographically.

OU and Texas should be placed in separate divisions but would mean geography out the window. How about this possible scenario:
Texas Division – Texas, Tech, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas St, WVU
OU Division – OU, OSU, Iowa St, Missouri, BYU, Louisville
Use annual crossover games for major rivals or hopefully new rivals:
Texas – OU; Tech – OSU; Baylor – BYU; Kansas – Missouri; Kansas St – Iowa St, Louisville-WVU
This would help balance divisions and keep some 2nd tier rival games on an annual basis i.e. Texas – Tech, Kansas – Kansas St, OU-OSU…

According to media last week WVU formally applied to both the ACC and SEC and was turned down by both. Based on responses on several Eastern blogs, the fan reputation of WVU is horrible, and that was a major reason (and academic rep poorer than Okie State) that they were turned away. Now imagine how the B12 image would fare if after reading all that we say, “no problem here, come on in” Nope, we got enough image problems already..

Oh I agree the Geography matters

That being said AF can use Cadets training in transport and Tax Payer $$$ to fly. I think if AFA actually jumps to the Big East, it is simply to join the other Academies.

What about Colorado State? Sure, they aren’t all that good right now (neither was CU), but they can compete and go to bowl games from time to time. Add them with BYU and we could be fine. They can provide a presence in Colorado/Denver we lost with CU.

They aren’t that many years removed from championship seasons in MWC. Beat Mizzou in the Holiday Bowl one year in the late 90s, too. Just sayin’

Well, if Air Force ends up being out, you could still argue it taps the Denver Market. (right?)

Not sure how to approach this. If I go with my gut, I say they probably don’t bring the Denver market. If I use the “Tech to DFW” measuring stick, then they bring the Denver market.

Might serve as a reflection of how the west coast had to absorb the Tech issue anyway.

mbrown – that was more about the battle of perception vs reality. Not trying to ignore your good work. I know that Tech delivers the DFW market.

I don’t think any one school “carries” a market with exception states like Alabama or Georgia where there are only one or two BCS quality universities. In Texas, where there are probably five schools with a decent following (TTU, UT, TCU, aTm, and OU…maybe OSU in Dallas, UH in Houston), the viewership is split much more dramaticallly in each market. Auburn and/or Alabama can “carry” the entire state since they are the only two major players in town. Same goes for the states of Virginia, Colorado, Washington, the Carolina’s, et al.

Texas and California and Florida are trickier to figure out. Some people in Texas won’t watch UT just on principle…others will watch hoping they lose…others will watch hoping they win. So does UT “carry” a city? Do we eliminate aTm or Tech or UH or TCU based on that? Do we add them based on that? It becomes fuzzy math and more of a wild guess than a truism.

I think it’s also been demonstrated that the closer you get to either coast, the viewership goes down. Espcially the mid-Atlantic region going north and the entire west coast.

I accept your technicality.

“Carry” was a poor choice of words.

I propose “Deliver” as a suitable replacement.

Thoughts?

Kenny Williams

Just say a tweet from chris level saying Chad scott told him Kenny Williams will play in the Nevada game. WOW.
They are not gonna redshirt anyone this year.
We are like 6 deep at running back and that is the 11th true freshman to see playing time.

Dude, if they can play, get 'em in the game.

I’m a member of the Church of What’s Happening RIght Now. If they can play and contribute, let’s go. I’ll worry about recruiting rankings in February. For now, let’s win games in September, October, November, December, and hellfuckingA in JANUARY!

I just don't be feelin' too good.

We don't need ANOTHER running back in the rotation...

We’ve got Daniels, Washington, Crawford, and Stephens. They’re all solid. I don’t know why we need greater than 4-man depth at that position. How many carries are there in a game?
