Nevada Wolf Pack 34, Texas Tech Red Raiders 35 | Post Game Thoughts

Box Score | Post Game Quotes

I was proud of the guys. Huge character builder for us. I don't know what it is about injuries, but we had to go out on the field five or six times to help guys off the field. Playing hard. It's just unfortunate. Don't know when it will stop.
- HEAD COACH TOMMY TUBERVILLE
on the game

THE RESULT | ALWAYS CELEBRATE A WIN | Maybe I'm too optimistic and too nice and have this internal need find happiness in the thing that makes me happy, but it's always been my philosophy to be happy with a win. Being at the game I was nervous as all heck and as my friends were high-fiving, I'm nursing my second half pull of Red Man and hoping for a win. As QB Seth Doege found WR Eric Ward in the endzone, I had a huge sigh of relief, and I knew that I was going to face when I was able to get back to a computer and log onto DTN. There would be people that would be upset and there would people that would say that celebrating a win against a WAC team isn't enough. Life and football aren't always perfect, but when something good happens, I'm going to celebrate. Will I celebrate like winning the national championship? No, but I've been a part of too many bad losses to take any win for granted. And the complaints about the players celebrating a win? For real? You want to criticize kids' emotions, who struggled all game long to stay and I questioned as to whether or not they should even be in the game, to come back and win in the last minute and they're not supposed to get excited? If we have gotten so jaded to think that kids can't or shouldn't show their true emotions, then maybe I need to be writing somewhere else. I'm happy for them and I'm also sure that they know, or that they knew by Sunday night when they watched the film, that there were so many mistakes, both on offense and defense, that they need to improve, but being disappointed with your team because they're happy seems strange. Life is too short, at least my life is too short, to think that I'm not supposed to be happy. This doesn't mean that I don't think that things need to be fixed, but just as I've had a long-standing thought that you can't tell me when to move-on, you also can't tell me when I can or cannot be happy about a win.

THE STORYLINES

THE DEFENSE IS STRUGGLING | I'm not going to alibi for the defense. The defense is and was atrocious and it was without WS Cody Davis and CB Tre' Porter, not to mention DE Leon Mackey. I know, you all are hearing of injuries and young players and all of that other stuff. The hope is that at some point, those injured players and young players will heal and grow up. I think we're still waiting on that. Maybe I'm too patient with how the defense is coming along. Here's what I saw at the game. I think that DC Chad Glasgow's thought prior to the game was that he was going to make the Nevada quarterbacks beat Texas Tech. Lantrip was only completing 56% of his passes coming into the game and I think that Glasgow thought that he knew that his rush defense was so poor that he was going to need all the help he could get (which it still wasn't enough) and bring the safeties as close to the line of scrimmage as possible. This meant that the Nevada receivers were working on-on-one all game long and the 7 to 10 yard out route was open all game long as the cornerbacks were playing 8 to 10 yards off of the receiver. I would guess that with each completion that Lantrip or Fajardo made, Glasgow was asking, when they were going to become their usual selves and it never happened.

So now there's a defense that is playing on their heels, we know that it's not good against the run, has linebackers that are the size of most decent sized safeties, are true freshman and one has only played football for two years. Both LB's Blake Dees and Sam Eguavoen aren't ready for prime time just year, but neither are any of the other linebackers and that's troubling. I think I said something similar to this last week. It will be tough to stomach all year long. Glasgow is at a real crossroads right now and its not an enviable position. He could play players like Cqulin Hubert and maybe it's time to think about giving time to veterans like Daniel Cobb, Tyrone Sonier or Zach Winbush. The fact that the rush defense is so poor isn't entirely the linebacker's fault, but at the very least, there are other options on the team, whereas with the defensive line, Glasgow is playing who he has available and he's playing a bunch of them. Glasgow and/or Tuberville are being incredibly stubborn about the linebackers and it may be time to give-in and let someone else have an opportunity.

Star-divide

DOEGE SAVED THE DAY | We were in the endzone, opposite the student section, so we didn't have the best seats, but what we did have was a neat vantage point for that last drive that saved the day. The drive in itself started off with yet another electric return from RB Ben McRoy and on that final play, a play that was further back because of a botched snap, the play is clearly designed to go to the right, but after what I think was maybe one or two seconds, Doege recognizes that's not going to work and Nevada knows the play was going to the right. Doege reverses field and credit should be given to WR Eric Ward, who never gave up on the play and continued to be there for his quarterback, all alone in the endzone as the Nevada defensive back thought that the chances of Doege reversing and throwing against his body was highly unlikely. Doege, overall, struggled yesterday. The press coverage for Doege threw him and his receivers for a bit of a loop as they couldn't figure out how to give him more time for his receivers to get open. Doege averaged only 5.8 yards per attempt, which is pitiful, but he was so Doege when it mattered and this will sound dumb, but during that final drive I had a sense of comfort when Doege was running the offense. In years past with first year quarterbacks, I was always nervous that it wasn't goign to work out the way I would want for it to work out, but it did work in the best possible way and I sorta thought that Doege wouldn't let Texas Tech fall. Again, I know that sounds dumb, but I trust him.

ONLY PERMITTED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RUNNING GAME IF YOU WERE COMPLAINING BEFORE THIS WEEK | I'll need verifiable proof that you were not happy with the way the offense was churning out yards prior to Saturday. Prior to the game, Texas Tech had been running the ball about 45% of the time and passing about 55% of the time. After Saturday's game, Texas Tech is still in that range. Was every play call perfect? Well of course not, there is not game-plan where each and every play is going to be perfect. But I think that this was more on Doege being patient and letting things open up down the field and he didn't have the patience to do that yesterday. He's going to have to develop that patience and maybe the other part is that he lost his go-to-down-the-field-guy in WR Darrin Moore so he didn't feel comfortable, but he's got to do that if he wants the offense to be successful. Nevada's cornerbacks were sitting on the Texas Tech receivers and I'd guess that most other teams are going to do the same thing until Doege can make them pay.  Still, other than a third and fourth down where the offense couldn't get a yard, I thought the offensive line, that lost a starter and C Justin Keown coming back from injury was fantastic, and what Doege didn't do passing the ball, he sure as heck did a fine job of making Nevada pay attention to him on the zone-read.

EXCUSES | I know that you're tired of making excuses and sometimes excuses are warranted and there's nothing that would make me happier than to see a team that isn't injured and is playing at full strength.  Lose the team's best starting receiver?  No excuses.  The team's most experienced defender (WS Cody Davis) and perhaps the team's best athlete (CB Tre' Porter) not even suiting up?  No excuses.  Lose the team's starting right tackle?  No excuses.  For me, it's a lot to overcome and I'd blame Strength and Conditioning Coach Joe Walker if this was a situation where players were pulling hamstrings, but these are ankle and knee injuries that are happening in the course of a game and no strength and conditioning coach can do much, if anything, about those types of injuries.  It stinks and it's not the way I want it to go, but the team did persevere and I can appreciate the effort/

THE DEFENSE IS STILL STRUGGLING | Again, the defense does need something and I'm not sure what it is.  From my vantage point, I couldn't see if the defensive line was just getting pushed around, but what I could see were players not filling lanes and that seems to be where Nevada was able to have their more than a handful of big plays.  I don't know whether to blame the linebackers or the safeties for not stepping up because I didn't have the advantage of a replay, but something has to be done and the coaching staff no doubt understands that the rush defense is a huge problem.  It's not going to get any easier from this point forward and it will be interesting to see if Glasgow makes any significant changes going forward.

OFFENSIVE MVP |WR ERIC WARD  | Five touchdown on the year, including two touchdowns in each of the last two games.  He's becoming the scoring threat we thought he might be as a 4-star receiver coming out of high school.

DEFENSIVE MVP | DT KERRY HYDER | The defensive line wasn't good, but I thought Hyder's sack that sealed the game on 4th down was huge.  Could also give it to CB Jarvis Phillips that knocked down a pass on 3rd down on Nevada's last scoring drive was huge.

SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | KR BEN MCROY | Just an amazing game from McRoy, as every time that he touched the ball you thought he was going to take it to the house.

Great write up. Love DTN and all you do here. Hope you had a nice trip to Lubbock. I am looking forward to getting back to there for OSU.

Thanks Seth. After the game, i logged on as well and saw the same type of negativity regarding the win. There are a ton of past games that we should have blown the doors wide open but we didn’t yet still won. A win is a win to me—especially with this young team. 3-0 is a great place to be with Kansas next week.

1) Playcalling was not as great
2) Glasgow needs to be in their faces all this week
3) Doege is as poised as can be—haven’t seen that since Graham.
4) Love, love, love McRoy and his exciting returns.
5) Glad to see the crowd hung in there the whole time.

Agree that the OLine did a fantastic job in pass protection.

Which makes me wonder if these guys get it, then why is the defense struggling so much. I just have to believe that if a D1 caliber player gets to college, he or she (can’t forget nancy) should know how to tackle.

Yes, a win is a win.

Play calling while in the agregate is good, I just can’t help getting pissed when we answer a big play with a 0 to 3 yard off guard running play. It seems to me that one should answer a big play with a big play – keep the defense on their heels.

But then, I may just be wishing for a sword swinger…….and this team “isn’t very good”

To your point - the play of the game:

the loss of yardage on the final 3rd down play. If it would have been 4th and 1 Tuberville would have TRIED to run it on that play instead of going to the pass! I have already seen enough plays where we can’t pick up one yard on the ground to get the first.

by ScottTTU on Sep 26, 2011 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

i subconsciously thought that too.

right before the 4th down snap, “damn good thing 3rd down lost yards, now we get to pass the ball!!”

although it looked we were passing on 3rd anyway

I can't agree more, Seth.

But remember, Leach won championships while he was here and never, ever lost to a lesser opponent.

Except when he lost to TCU. And Colorado.
But I digress.

The Kids deserved to celebrate. Hell, I fist pumping like the situation on freshman move in day at the jersey shore when Eric ward caught that pass.
Horrible game. Great ending. Glad to get the win.
Now, let’s go beat the piss out of Kansas.

Championships?!

I don’t remember anything more than a shared south “championship”… I do remember losses to Houston, horrible losses to colorado and horrible missouri teams. not showing up in the cotton bowl, the list goes on and on for losses to lesser opponents during the leach era.

They didn’t have an answer for the running game and that’s it. they were not prepared for that bad ass athlete Fajardo but they did get a goal line stop when they needed it and Doege shows his sack on that last drive. I like the promise of this team.

by allknowing on Sep 26, 2011 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

SO because Leach had all of those we should just settle for the same from any new coaches

I agree that is it wrong to criticize the players for celebrating. Heck, I was hollering like we won a championship myself because I was so relieved to get away with a win!

Wrong on championships and loss to lesser opponents

No championships won outright.

Lesser OOC opponents to whom we lost: East Carolina, TCU, New Mexico, Houston

We won a lot of games the past decade but we had our share of perplexing losses too.

I agree, always celebrate a win. Was it perfect? No. The negative Nancy’s of the world going to whine and throw “I told you so’s” at you, but most logical people understand that when you are missing 4 HUGE parts of our defense due to injury and suspension things can be a little rough. I am just glad we made it though this game with a win.

by cjp on Sep 26, 2011 8:32 AM CDT reply actions

We needed this game

The way I look at it was we have a great way to identify our current weaknesses before we face some really hard competition. I expected we would have a game like this and I would rather we have it early. Nevada played a great game and the fact we were able to pull a win is awesome. The end of the 4th quarter was Leach like and that got me excited. We’ll do fine against Kansas and hopefully it will be a good primer before playing A&M for the last time. Fact is we are still winning the games we’re supposed to win and we’re 3-0.

I agree with this completely

In years past, we’d usually have at least one stinker and we usually lost it. This year we have a stinker that we manage to win. The question to be seen is: Is this a BAD performance that helps us find our problems and fix them or is this indicative of how we will handle stronger competition? I choose to believe the former for now. I hope we can at least protect our house. Let’s be loud and proud and help this team grow stronger.

by HeeroTX on Sep 26, 2011 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I think this is excellent distinction

“Is this a BAD performance that helps us find our problems and fix them or is this indicative of how we will handle stronger competition?”

Great observation. The highly negative responses have assumed that Saturday set the standard of play for the rest of the year. The Polyana’s have insisted that a win is a win and we’ll learn from any mistakes. We won’t know for sure until the end of the season but I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between.

Agree. This win is a character builder on so many levels ..

1) The players now know, not just believe, that they can get it done in crunch time.

2) The coaches now know, not just believe, that the players can get it done in crunch time.

3) The most important player on the team became Doege.

4) The coaches know that this team has enough moxie to keep games close despite their inability to get the team ready to play.

Only disagree on the Rush in one series....

my gripe on the play calling was right after TTU stopped Nev. in the second half and TTU had a chance to tie it up and Mad Scientist Jr. went to 4 straight runs….aleast put one pass in there…..also the TTU radio team complained all nite how the db’s were holding our receivers and Nev. Oline was holding and with a wac crew TTU not 0 calls….I know it is hard but TTU is a very young team and even younger with the players out but I pray all the these guys can be back this week or in the next few and REMEMBER FREE SCOTTY NOW!!!!! But if not then he’ll be ready for atm. If TTU has Mackey and Scotty for atm that will help hugely! I know I’m crazy but IN DOEGE WE TRUST! Wreck’Em Tech

I just hate to see our defense struggle this early. Our defense should be ranked in the top 50 right now vs cupcakes. It will only get worse as we start to play the top offenses in the country in the big 12. Considering we rotate so many defensive players in and out and we claim to play 20 something defensive players, I find the injury excuse unacceptable. I don’t think these 3 or 4 injured players make that much of a difference. I guess time will tell if Mackey and Smith will make that difference.

Offensivley im alright with it. Only because i now know what we are capable of but i hate to see these come from behind wins. But i am happy with the improved running game.

I loved to see Mcroy look like we was gonna run for 80 yards every catch.

Having your top performers at the line will make a great deal of difference. Adding pressure is everything. Mackey and Smith are the missing ingredient because they will force the lesser talent to elevate their game.

Darrin Moore out: Hope Doege is getting more comfortable looking to other targets.

Playing Freshmen LBs: Hope we are developing young linebackers for conference play.

Mackey and Smith out: Hope full game reps better develop rotation for conference play when Mackey and Smith are starting.

Porter and Davis out: Same as above. Hope game experience better develops depth of our defensive backfield.

Ronnie Daniels: Hope he gains appreciation for the opportunity at hand. A young man’s day in the sun can short.

From what I saw

The D-Line was holding up fairly well but the problem is that like most option/triple option offenses, Nevada can basically scheme all but the most destructive defensive line play out of the game, and force your defenders at the second level to make all the plays. Certain elements seem pretty intent on pinning the bad defense on the new regime, but what I saw (accounting for this being the 3rd scheme in 3 years) is what you always seem to see in poor defensive showings by Tech, or any team by that matter. Poor pursuit angles, poor tackling, zone coverage that could charitably be described as in the zip code, and total breakdowns during the rare occasions when they did put Nevada in 3rd down situation.

Inexperienced but talented players in some positions, experienced but meh players in others, some key injuries sprinkled in between (Tre Porter and Cody Davis alone could have altered the complexion of this outcome, as they’re probably the best this defensive backfield has to offer in run support and downhill play). They scraped out the win, which is good; I’ve seen Tech defenses pack it in after 3 and a half quarters instead of manning up and making the one stop that really matters, so that on its own is encouraging. It’s going to be a tough year, but if these kids survive the blowtorching they’re going to receive from the conference schedule, they might even come back next year as a net strength.

by mojavereject on Sep 26, 2011 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

moja, this makes a lot of sense to me.

Poor pursuit angles, poor tackling, zone coverage that could charitably be described as in the zip code, and total breakdowns during the rare occasions when they did put Nevada in 3rd down situation.

When I ask why to each of those issues: i.e., poor pursuit angles, why? some of them take me back to new scheme, lining up in a different spot, different keys taking a player to the wrong spot on the field.

Poor tackling, why ? Practice, out of position ( pursuit angle), not playing with poise / keeping one’s head.

I am agreeing with you as I point to the specifics, to me, it is pretty complex, not straight line at all.

Can’t wait to see what changes are made this week for Kansas. It could be another nail biter, but experience is being built before our eyes. I’ll take a 4-0 start to a season regardless of stats or margins of victory if we can take care of KU. I’m all good with flying under the radar. S think we beat some good teams this year.

Hey Seth, are you going to be able to do the drive summary again?

I am curious to see the difference in 1st down running calls as opposed to last week. What was the run/pass distribution this week?

by RdrPwr on Sep 26, 2011 10:11 AM CDT reply actions

No. I didn’t DVR the game so I’m out of luck. I think it was a 50/50 split on pass to run, but don’t have personnel or formation information. The funny thing is that I think Nevada was daring TTU to run the ball and for the most part, did a pretty good job of taking advantage of that. Doege’s bionic ACL’s were awesome. Doege has to be patient to let the guys down the field get open. That is my biggest gripe with Doege this game is that he didn’t let plays develop.

It seemed like quite a bit more running than last week to me, and I know I was yelling to stop running every first down.

I do know that in the 4th quarter I watched us attempt to run between the tackles, with 8 men in the box several times. I need to find a replay to watch so I can see this playcalling without a flask in pocket. My judgement may have been a bit skewed.

by RdrPwr on Sep 26, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

38 passes and 38 runs = 76 plays. Doege took 2 sacks (I think) so 2 of those runs weren’t probably designed runs so really it was probably 40 pass plays and 36 running plays. Last week there were 50 pass plays and 38 running plays.

So there was a higher percentage of running this week,

just nothing too bad. Hm… Maybe it is just me afterall.

by RdrPwr on Sep 26, 2011 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think it wasn’t incredibly blatant in favor of running. I could be off on the number of sacks, so that could skew the numbers, I just can’t remember right now. If it was 40 passes, that’s 52% and for the year, TTU is at 55% (again, going off of memory).

I personally would like to see 60/40 split.

But I’m also aware that most coaches (not Leach because he was a different animal all together) use the OOC games for a couple of things…

1) They work on weaknesses against inferior competition

2) Get younger players experience

3) and there is strategy in not showing too much of your arsenal.

May have nothing to do with the amount of running we’re doing at all, but at the same time – I am hopeful that this is a part of that.

I think you have something going there, Dunka.

It is a lot different figuring it out with this staff than the prior. Prior was just going to pass, that was the game. Out execute on the relatively few plays we ran.

This staff is expecting to run effectively. They also expect to pass effectively. They tend to game plan the run / pass ratio more based on how they judge the opponent to game plan our offense.

Your 3 points seem to reflect what they are doing to develop the team as we prepare for future opponents.

My Thoughts

ALWAYS CELEBRATE A WIN
I cant believe this happened or that this is even an issue. I havent looked for or read the offending comments. I dont care to either. Shame on you if you did get on the teams case for celebrating a hard fought win. Geez, what a bunch of killjoys.
THE STORYLINES:
THE DEFENSE IS STRUGGLING

Russian Coffee (could someone explain the nickname to me?) has his hands full with the Back Seven. Maybe Im regretting the departure of Sam Fehoko a little more than most. But our LB’s need help. And yes I agree that maybe “Simply put the best athlete out there” isnt always the best solution.
DOEGE SAVED THE DAY
Im reminded of that Mizzou game in which GHarrell got picked 3 times and benched in the first half. I think Doege is off to a much better start in his command of this offense. This experience will be huge for him to draw on if he ever gets into another bind.
ONLY PERMITTED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RUNNING GAME IF YOU WERE COMPLAINING BEFORE THIS WEEK
HELL NO. No complaints from me. Again. This counts as experience. It is invaluable for this offense/team get to learn what to do when the going gets tough. To lament going 45% running plays when theyre exactly what we needed is asinine. How many times have we wished to be able to run the ball with authority (Houston 09) and we simply didnt have the experience to do it? How many of us ever expected for an Tech QB to break off two big runs for 90 yards?
EXCUSES
Lots of injuries….I will give them a small pass on this one.
THE DEFENSE IS STILL STRUGGLING
Maybe we can microwave these kids so they can grow up faster. Like they do on Soap Operas.
MVP’s
Offensive MVP: Doege. His command of this offense is paramount
Defensive MVP: My choice is our DT’s They pushed the line up in Nev’s face and came up with big plays. It seems I was always seeing Langley and Perry in the backfield
Special Teams MVP: McRabbit. No doubt

Sometimes the fans are more entertaining than the game. My grandson’s 8th grade team opened this season with a bad game. Some fan and his lady opened the season with their loud comments of ‘pathetic’ after each of the many plays that did not go our way….8th graders in a two year program. Additionally, the HS coach is new for the season and is installing an Air Raid like offense, this 8th grade team is a feeder school to that HS, well they changed offenses trying to build a qb and wr corps out of last season’s good balanced offense.

Good Post Pirate

I think if Nevada does well against Boise State this weekend we will all feel a little better.

Since I now live in SEC territory, the TAM move interests me. Most of my neighbors (Alabama, Auburn and Florida fans) have little interest one way or the other.

I was at the Florida State, Oklahoma game last weekend. Great college game. Tech should be able to pass on Oklahoma.

By the way we were at the game supporting Oklahoma. Shirts, hats, the whole thing. The Florida State fans were fantastic hosts, gives college football a good name.

Or does anyone else feel like there was more of a “support your conference” feel (not quite at SEC levels, but still…) when it was the SWC? I really think the Big12 is the most dysfunctional “self hating” conference there is. (by which I mean all of us hate the conference and have no desire to support any other teams in it)

Commentos !

You want to criticize kids’ emotions, who struggled all game long to stay and I questioned as to whether or not they should even be in the game, to come back and win in the last minute and they’re not supposed to get excited?

Yeah, is it difficult to undertand at times. I got real happy after about 3 hours of unhappiness, and wonder if we were ever going to make something happen. I had these great memories of the New Mexico game, couldn’t figure out why were were not running up the score, making 1st downs, passing them silly—well, the New Mexico coach just got fired, no doubt that is part of that story. All in all, this was a fun game to see as we dug outselves out of a deep hole, exhibited a lot of poise—poise beyond the maturity of the team—and won a game in the closing seconds. This is to this team some of the great last second wins we have enjoyed vs aggy and others over the past 10 years—I think because we are that immature as a team.

The defense: This team is a young team, I am talking more than just age. The defense is very immature as a team—this is not a very good team. But we know that, we know we have a new defense, we know what happens when a scheme is changed. It comes down to reps. The potential is there, and the road through development has to be traveled.

Glasgow and/or Tuberville are being incredibly stubborn about the linebackers and it may be time to give-in and let someone else have an opportunity.

I am wondering about that also. The guys who looked so good at the end of last season but who are not even on the horizon currently. Why did we just lose two players who quit but have exhibited enough ability in the past to garner playing time? Are the new guys that much better looking from a potential perspective ? Or, and this is more what I am naively hoping to see, the new guys are currently playing to give them experience to provide overall depth as the season progresses. We are going to need depth, great depth as the season progresses. LOL, pollyanna me !!!

Doege saved the day: Well, he is the quarterback, and he did do his part given the circumstances. LOL, Ward did his part as well, he was ad libbing to get open on the ending play, and the OL was blocking for all they knew how. We finish with a great play. I think the play was going to be a slant over the middle but they jammed it so it did not develop.

Running game: I tend to look too much to the long term to think much about the current details of run vs pass. I want to see 35 – 40 run vs pass. I like that offense, the excitement of making 1st downs bang, bang, bang leading to a quick td is soooo much fun. I also think we do not have the recievers that we once had or the scheme is restricting in some way or the defenses are just getting so much better. Doege is a very good qb, I do think he was terribly off at the beginning of the game, I saw some horrid looking passes—little accuracy. I cannot see what is happening down field on the tv, but it sounded like our receivers were getting knocked off their routes. Guys like Swindall, Zouzalic, Franks and maybe others are not playing physical enough to bust the db’s and maintain their routes…it doesn’t matter if it is Potts, Sticks, Harrell, or Doege, if they aren’t there, the passing doesn’t work, then you must run. So I see us running and working to run very effectively compared to what I am accostomed to seeing.

Excuses: There are no excuses for failure in Div1 football. However, for those who wish to discuss the how’s and why’s there is a reason for everything. We are following a similar path to any Div1 program under a new staff, we have added to that complication by changing DC’s after year one. Year 3 seems to be a norm for seeing some real maturity exhibited on the field. I don’t know if we will get there or not. I do enjoy watching it all happen, watching with winning is much much more fun, than looking like aggy on the way.

I apologize for writing so much this a.m. I am very happy with winning, very concerned for the next game. Looking to have fun as I watch this program grow.

My thoughts

I was happy with the win. Watching it at home I leapt up and down and screamed at the top of my lungs :-) Surprised that the neighbors didn’t call the cops….

I am however not very optimistic for the future. I think we are going to be in trouble when we start Big 12 play next week. I think we will beat Kansas next week and that may be it for the year. I am thinking 4 wins maybe 1 or 2 more if we get lucky.

Those WAC referees were wacky!

I have never witnessed such biased major college game referees! Two times the ref stops Tech from snapping the ball—just so Nevada’s defense can get settled in! I thought that once the ball was placed ready for play, it was READY FOR PLAY!

by redraidertom on Sep 26, 2011 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

I will be the first to admit...

I had a breakdown of epic proportions. I was in a dark place during that game and vented to DTN as a kind of group counseling. It reminded me of the Insight (maybe?) bowl where we played the Gophers. I thought we would stop them, and they ended up blasting us and I sure as hell got belligerent. But I also got happy as hell they found a way to win.

Someone already stated this, but a bad team would have lost that game and acted defeated. Texas Tech fought back from being in an awful place to winning the damn game. Did I like how we played the whole game? No, but I respect how these kids never said "die," and found a way to win the game.

And hell yes they should be happy and celebrate! Rock on Red Raiders, and keep finding that fire in your guts that leads you to victory.

Amen, Seth!

I’m aware of all the issues the team faces (and especially on defense), but I agree that you’ve just got to celebrate a win—-no matter what! I’ve seen too many of the other kind, where we played really well and just fell short. My brother and I still remember the “Casey at the bat” game against NC State in 1993, where the Wolfpack beat us with a TD pass on the last play of the game, right in front of us and his two little girls. Made for a rather somber post-game supper. I’ll take a victory ANY freakin’ day—someone else can have all those so-called “moral victories.”

BTW, anybody notice that Teriyaki roast chicken at the concession stand? I know it’s $7, but that was a GIGANTIC slab of meat to dine on. Didn’t need no popcorn afterward.

In the middle of the 4th Qtr it looked like I had the plague.

Head down, eyes closed, pale as a ghost. My wife Elizabeth thought I had a heart attack like Fred Sanford. But when NV went for the FG and did not fake the attempt, I knew we had a chance and at the end of the game, I shook my head in disbelief. I knew the team did not give up on that last drive in our red zone, and I knew we have a bunch of fighters on our hands. Some day, that will show up as a big advantage. they have that"we can stil win" attitude that Mike L. teams had as part of their mantra.

Yes but we are not alone. I saw a lot of ugly tackling in the games sat. I really think that live tackling makes a team better. Look at Miami back in the Jimmy Johnson days they went full pads the majority of the time, and were one of the best defenses during his time.

THE RESULT | ALWAYS CELEBRATE A WIN

I’m going to get you on semantics only – what if Doege and Crawford got hurt? I don’t think I’d be celebrating. We’ve had our share of injuries. Not enough people remember those!

by minimark on Sep 26, 2011 5:34 PM CDT reply actions

Well...

What I know is that a lot of the players trying to learn their 2nd defensive scheme in 2 years is asking a lot from them. It’s hard to adjust to a new coaching philosophy and different terminology as well.

It takes a while to implement a good defensive scheme as the players must be in the system for a while so they can teach other players how it works. It seems to me like most of these guys probably don’t pick up their playbooks as they should. If you don’t know your stuff, then you shouldn’t play. But in this instance, i don’t think that they have any other options left.

'08 Nevada Game

Remember how close that game was? It took a last minute TD to win that game as well. I had my doubts before this game started. A top ten rushing offense against a young defense(not to mention the injuries) that is terrible at stopping the run. I’m very satisfied with this win, but we have to figure out a way to at least slow running offenses down or Cyrus Grey is going to have the game of his life. Two weeks till the big game! Wreck ’em!
