Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Kansas Jayhawks | Who's Trending
LAST WEEK TO HIGHLIGHT RUSH DEFENSE | I'm declaring that this week is the last week that I'll be able to use the rush defense as a reason to lose. I know that this isn't the "reason to win or lose" article, but I'm going to get my money's worth this week and you can't do anything about it. After this week, I'm forcing myself to be more creative and stop using the pitiful rush defense as a crutch. I had no idea that cfbstats was keeping track of this, but I somewhat thought that Texas Tech was giving up huge chunks of yards, especially after Saturday night, but Texas Tech has given up 19 runs of 10+ yards, 5 runs of 20+ yards, 3 runs of 30+ yards, 1 run of 40+ yards and 1 run of 50+ yards. That's good for 42nd in the nation, which isn't awful, but is certainly in the wrong half of the nation. We've talked about linebackers and safety and defensive line play all needs to improve. Yes. Just get it done and find something to make this better.
EMERGING HYDER | This is the second game to point out the really good play of DT Kerry Hyder. I love the fact that he's active and he's not being out-muscled despite not being the biggest player. The real test starts now, but I'm impressed at what he's done, despite not having the best stats, having only 7 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU, 2 QB hurries and 1 forced fumble. And I even think that Hyder saw some time at defensive end last week and I think that Glasgow will like the idea of having a player that he can move around a bit, especially as the defenisve line needs to shore up the aforementioned rush defense.
RECEIVERS STEPPING UP | With WR Darrin Moore out for at least one week, this presents a perfect opportunity for QB Seth Doege and the rest of the receivers figure out who is going to be that down the field threat that the team lacked on Saturday night. Personally, I didn't think that the offensive play-calling was all that much different. I do think that OC Neal Brown was taking advantage of a Nevada defense that was giving up 5.76 yards per rush, which was almost better than what Doege was doing at quarterback, 5.84 yards per attempt. Doege didn't seem to me to look down the field and he has to be more comfortable looking down the field for someone else to stretch the defense. If forced to chose, I think that Jacoby Franks was pretty darned good in Moore's absence, but he was the only player to average over 10 yards per catch. That needs to be better this week.
More after the jump.
RETURN OF INJURED PLAYERS | I am cautiously optimistic about the return of DE Leon Mackey, CB Tre' Porter and WS Cody Davis. I can't or won't alibi for the defense last week, but I do think that Porter and Davis would have made some difference. In reading this week's post-game press conference, FS D.J. Johnson said that CB Eugene Neboh played the boundary cornerback spot, Porter's spot, for the first time last week:
I feel like Neboh stepped up and did a tremendous job. He didn't even play at the boundary corner, he just started playing it this week. You know what I mean? For him to transition to that side, that was huge, that was great. I'm grateful he was able to step up and make that play.
Porter will be back and it will be nice to have the run support of Davis from the weak safety spot. Not to mention the return of DE Leon Mackey, who will help free up some time and add some size to the defensive line. I don't know how much cumulatively they will all add, but I think it will be significant and am excited to have all three defensive players back on Saturday.
FORCING TURNOVERS | I mentioned this last week or a couple of weeks ago, how last year and this year the team jumped out of the gate incredibly quickly in terms of making plays, forcing turnovers and generally playing well the first few games, but then things somewhat fell apart during conference play. Last week, the defense didn't force a single turnover and those forced fumbles that helped the team. Turnovers are a finkle bunch and I think it's tough to rely on the fact that turnovers will happen each and every game because there will be games where it won't happen for the defense. But for the defense to continue to be successful, the defense needs to make plays. DC Chad Glasgow mentioned it after the game as well, that he needs guys that are going to make plays on the defense, i.e. CB Jarvis Phillips making a huge play by knocking down the pass on 3rd down and goal in Nevada's last scoring drive and DT Kerry Hyder's sack on 4th down in Nevada's last drive. They weren't turnovers, but those sorts of plays lead to turnovers.

Hyder
Was at the game on Saturday and definitely noticed Hyder. At some point in the 4th quarter he decided he was no longer going to allow anyone to block him.
Dline
They have to get a better push up front to start stopping the run.

Dline
I think the D-line has done a good job given that our best players arent on the field. I would like to see more out of the linebackers. They are missing assignments and gaps which i think is paving way for team like Nevada to gain mucho yards on the ground.
it's all about the first push
If the Dline gets good push that keeps olineman from getting to there second level (LB’s). So I think the Dline needs to get a better push to help out the young LB’s.

I agree
We have not been getting a good push so maybe having Mackey and Scott will help with that.

I think they've done okay
consider the lack of the two best defensive players, at least potentially the best ones.
Emerging Hyder: I think the whole interior lineman crew is performing well. Man, I sure miss Colby Whitlock. Can we recruit more 300 lb HS wrestlers from Oklahoma?
Receivers Stepping Up
The more I think about it the more Im coming to a important conclusion. The problem for two years wasnt Potts. It was his lack of playmakers at WR. The Potts era got one good year of two outta Lewis (‘09) and one good year of two outta Leong (’10). Each year I kept hoping we’d have a bunch of 90th percentile guys after Crabtree (95th percentile) left. Turns out we had a bunch of 80% guys. Now we have Moore (92%) and Franks and Ward (both 90%). IMHO…This could work
Injured Players What happened to Cody Davis? Tre POrter? I missed it. I was happy to see Keown back. Im happy to be getting Mackey back. (Free Scotty!!!)
Turnovers Its a little frustrating to see your D playing well, (2nd half anyway) holding the opponent to two 4th qtr FGs and NOT get the turnovers. Upon further review, you realized the opponent is scoring FGs when youre scoring TDs. It was big!

Tortilla, I agree with you about the recievers the past two years.

Recievers
There has been something missing from this group for two years – agreed. It really wasn’t Potts. And it isn’t the receivers so much either. The one thing that is different is the guy calling the plays. Before Crabtree we probably had a bunch of 80 or 70 percentile guys out there, but plays were made. I don’t remember a jailbreak going for more than 10 yards since Brown got here. (Have been getting the games on the radio this year so maybe I missed something on these.) I just don’t think the play-calling has been worth a damn in the passing game and someone needs to go watch some film of TTU before & during Crabtree to see they types of plays that worked well. I remember YAC, plays of 15 & 20+ yards on every drive, and scoring a TD on every first drive. Not anymore.
I tend to disagree
Between Welker, Crabtree, and Amendola, from 2000 to 2008 Tech had at least one NFL-caliber option out on the field at receiver. It’s probably the simplest explanation to say that 2009-2010 crop just didn’t have that one guy who dictates coverages and forces different playcalls. A team full of Scottie Pippens with no MJ

Forcing turnovers
It would be encouraging to see upward momentum in this area. Recall the Saints’ defense in their Super Bowl run. They weren’t particularly “good,” but they were doggedly opportunistic. Being able to come up with two or three turnovers can really turn the tide. That presumes the offense doesn’t turn the ball over and the defense doesn’t give up enough big plays that the defensive turnovers aren’t just window dressing.

My Prediction
My recollection of past games is that whatever went bad for us defensively we will fix thus making ourselves weaker in some other area on defense, so I think we will be significantly better on the rush defense this weak. Notice: I didn’t say good, I just said better. However, we will give up something to do that (e.g., playing linebackers closer to the line thus giving up the short middle pass or playing safeties up leaving open the deep pass). The question is, will KS take advantage.
At the same time, what worked for us offensively, will be shut down by the following team. For example, NM played off our receivers giving them easy 0-5 yard passes that our receivers turned into avg. 10 yrd gains. Nevada plaid our receivers close and took away that option, but Tech was successful with the run. I predict that KS will do what they can to shut down the run since our past games require that respect. The question is what will be availale to the offense and will they take advantage of it.

Saturday
will be my first game in person this year….I remember last year being so mesmerized by how much space our db’s gave receivers and how we didn’t break on the ball AT ALL. That will be the first thing I look for, and just as I was when we had Spike’s raiderback (hello Marcus Coleman)…I will be looking at which db is closest to the line.
Where we are and who we are playing…..my guess is the line will be more worried about gap contraol and responsibility versus making a huge push in the pocket. That was the other thing last year…..our ends seemed to keep pushing upfield to a point where they were out of the play.
Good time….the Hawk, the Wheel and it better be a Tech Victory.

I'll Look for you OSR....
This wekk will be my only game in person for the year and looking for a big TTU victory. OSR – I’ll be the guy decked out in Red Raider gear. Seriously would be great to hook up but I have no idea how tailgating works at KU. My son is in grad school there and says parking is not the best right around the stadium. So if we don’t meet I’ll dring on for you in my pre-game prep. Thank goodness I can buy Shiner Bock in Indiana now so I will be ready to go.

The coaches
The coaches know what works for each scenario. The players need to get to where they understand at least the majority of that. Then they must keep their position and try not to let anyone with the ball get by them. It takes smarts, strength, quickness and perserverance. So, experience helps a lot. The problem is that even Tech’s most experienced players on defense are also learning the nuances of yet another defensive scheme of yet another defensive coordinator. No matter how good a player is, it just cannot replace experience. The fact that this year’s defense is a bit quicker than that of the last few years cna help Tech to maybe make up for the inexperience by using faster, more mobile players. I think Tech can win this, but until experience is gained, this kind of game will always rely on that quickness. Best of good fortunes to our team.
