CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT
Big step for MU's conference future may come Tuesday - KansasCity.com
I think this is the money quote:
"If it were just a matter of saying let’s go say goodbye Big 12 and join the SEC," one source told The Star, "if there was no litigation or a few dollars involved, it would be an easy choice.
"If it comes down to we’ve got to come up with 40 million bucks, or whatever the number might be, that’s a different deal."
I still don't blame Missouri for wanting to get the heck out of Dodge.
Big 12 needs to expand just to survive | College Sports | Sports News and Videos on the Dalla...
Apparently the idea that TCU is not a candidate is changing, especially if Missouri bolts. Here's Burch:
That flexibility makes TCU and BYU, an independent in football, attractive plug-in candidates for a 2012 Big 12 football schedule that now is without A&M and soon could be minus Mizzou.
Because of its location, TCU also would be a logical long-term fit to replace A&M in the South Division -- with BYU and some Big East expatriates in the North -- if the Big 12 regains its 12-team configuration in the future, a move being pushed by Oklahoma President David Boren and other league officials.
Multiple league sources indicated Wednesday that a two-step expansion process is possible, even likely, with the league regaining its 10-team format for the 2012 football season and going beyond that number -- perhaps as high as 16, said Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard -- in 2013 or later.
If I'm Neinas, the first place I look for expansion candidates is the Big East, which has an undervalued TV deal that expires after the 2013 season. I'd strongly consider South Florida as well as Louisville, Cincinnati and West Virginia.

Jayhawks hope running game will be enough to dominate Raiders | Red Raiders
Duh. Of course the Jayhawks will want to run the ball on one of the worst rush defenses in the country and head coach Tommy Tuberville agrees:
"I’m concerned about everybody’s running game," Tuberville said Wednesday. "We ain’t stopped anybody yet. ... They play four good running backs and they have a big offensive line. I’m sure they’re looking at the film and chomping their gums and can’t wait for us to get there."
Football notebook: Tuberville talks defense, Kansas, more - The Daily Toreador: Sports | Red Raiders Football Notebook: Tight end leaves | Red Raiders
Notebooks! TE Tony Trahan left the team which leaves the team with just two tight ends on the roster. That's fine, there's only a handful of snaps in each game. As an example, in the New Mexico game, Texas Tech only had a tight end on 12 plays (P12 personnel on 7 plays and P21 personnel on 5 plays). With the emergence of TE Jace Amaro, you hate to lose depth, but Trahan could never get on the field. In other news, CB Tre' Porter, WS Cody Davis, DE Leon Mackey and RT Mickey Okafor will all be back this week:
"We want our guys to be in good shape," Tuberville said after Wednesday’s practice. "We’ve done some extra running this week. We do have a few guys that are still beat up a little bit. Hopefully, most everybody will be back that was injured last week in the game.

When you see pictures of the Kent Hance Chapel? Could there be a more ironic, immortalizing monument for someone that dishonest and unethical? When everything finally goes down and he gets fired can it be renamed?

We could have used that money to add a giant HD TV and build Tubby and indoor facility.
Until we get giant TV and indoor facility, weather will always be an excuse for Tubby.
Hance needs to get his priorties in order. This is not about chapel or academics, this is about football.

I don’t see why anyone’s name should be in front of the chapel? Is it not the house of God? Should have kept it simple and just went with Texas Tech Chapel.

I believe that was in a Tech bulletin—Hance personally put up a couple mill for its construction. As for naming college chapels—A&M, UH and others on campuses are also named—usually after the biggest donor.

Seriously...
Even Hance needs a few prayers said for him. Maybe this is a way for him to make amends, eh?
Interesting KU take on the game . . .
Read the Rock Chalk Talk article linked above and all the guys were talking about is whether to take tech and lay the points or go with the Over (which is at 67.5). Pretty sad when there is no real expectation that your team is good enought o win.
While we all don’t agree on Tubs and his approach ( I personally am coming around to liking TT), things could be a lot worse. If we lose this weekend, however, it may the lowest point TTU has seen in a very long time.

Dang. For whatever reason that people may not like Hance, to suggest that a chapel be burned or that the chapel is intended to be built so that people can worship the person who’s name is on the chapel is about as over-the-top as I’ve seen this group and I think I’ve seen a lot. People have chapels named after them. I’ve been to Perkins Chapel on the SMU campus and I have no idea who Perkins is, but I wasn’t there to worship Perkins. I think the Sistine Chapel is named after a Pope from some time in history. I don’t think people go there to worship Sistine. I won’t pretend to know any person’s motives for having a chapel built other than a place to worship and although I’m not going to get preachy (that’s when you know a person is about to get preachy) we’ve all done bad things in our lives where if the higher power that you believe in may not approve of those actions, some of those things occur on DTN game day threads. We could throw stones in glass houses all day long, but if you believe in ultimate judgment by a higher being then that person will deal with whatever they’ve done in their life to deserve such a judgment.

Well...I'll say this...
as a graduate of Texas Tech University, and someone that has interest in its improvement, I’ve become familiar with obstacles that have prevented the university from reaching world-class status. Texas Tech does have fundamental needs. Everything from more research funding to cutting-edge research facilities. How long have we discussed the route to Tier 1? How long have we bemoaned that fact that “inferior academics” always seems to be the first reference when Texas Tech is mentioned?
Over the years I’ve spoken with many students, many professors, many academic professionals. Not once have I heard, “What Texas Tech REALLY needs is a chapel!”. Not once. Ever.
Texas Tech has immediate needs. A chapel wasn’t one of them. Building a chapel despite other pressing needs, then dedicating it in your own honor seems like an act of messianic grandiosity .
I find it creepy as hell.

To this thought, its his money and he can do with it what he wants. I talk about want vs. need with my wife all of the time and to be truthful, there really doesn’t ever need to have a church constructed. People could worship anywhere they please. I think that you could argue that the concept of any religious building is more aesthetic. My brother-in-law just finished up the construction on a youth building for a local church. Did they need it? Not really. They could have managed.
And to have your name on it, well to have your name on anything is a strange concept to me as I’ll never own enough to actually have anything named after me, but it’s his money. Hance talked about the chapel here:

Seth...exactly my point..
Hance is free to do whatever he likes with his own money. I have no problem with him investing his own assets on a place pf worship. However, Hance, if anyone, should be well aware of the university’s needs. Texas Tech has needs. Texas Tech needs all the monetary support it can get. Texas Tech needs serious financial investment. What Texas Tech didn’t need was a chapel.
Hance claims to love the university. I’m sure he does. However, he chose to ignore other immediate needs to build a chapel. A chapel that will one day be dedicated in his honor.
It’s his money, he can do what he wants with it. However, while he signs the check, I reserve the right to be critical of how the money is spent. I love Texas Tech too.

This is an absolute fine opinion and respect you for it. My complaint initially was the reference to the thought that by having his name attached to it was intending for people to worship him (I also remember that I attended a service at Sharp Chapel at Tulsa University, but I didn’t worship Sharp) or that it’s being built with steel as someone may want to burn it to be too much for me. I have no problem with criticizing the school for spending money (I don’t know where the money came from other than the 60% paid by Hance referenced in the article) or whether or not its “needed”.

I don't post on here often but...
I have followed this blog since my freshman year at Tech (fall 2007) and really enjoy reading the insights, information, and opinions that are expressed on this blog.
I currently work as a student supervisor in the Office of Annual Giving on campus where we call alumni every night and ask for money that comes back to academically help Texas Tech (we raise money for the individual colleges, departments, and scholarships), so I know quite a bit about the chapel issue that is being discussed.
As far as I know, Kent Hance financed the chapel with his own money. However, there is a Chapel Building Fund that alumni can make their gift designated towards, if they choose that they do want to help cover the cost. I do agree that maybe Hance should pick where he puts his money a little more wisely, because as chancellor his salary is paid by the taxpayers…so technically the money he is spending was originally our money and he should help academics first, but the chapel is not a terrible idea.
As far as the chapel goes, at first I was a little skeptical because I am Jewish and didn’t like the idea of there being a “church” on campus, but I have grown to the idea of the chapel because it is meant to be a non-denominational chapel, and I do know a chapel is different from a church. I think it will be cool that now Tech people can get married on campus if they choose too.
Finally, Mr. ForestFlyer, I hope you are not one of the alums that I have called that has either hung up on me, or been rude, or says they only make their gift to the Red Raider Club or Alumni Association. If you really believe what you are saying, answer the phone when we call and make a gift that goes towards the college you graduated from and 100% benefits the students of Tech and will help us reach Tier 1 status…and that goes for all the other alumni on this blog as well.
Stop calling my dad.
He’s getting irritated that I’ve been out of school for 5 months now and he’ still getting calls for money. Then again… keep it up. I find it to be hilarious.
Hahaha! That's funny!
We will keep calling! But in all seriousness, if your dad wants us to stop calling, he can kindly ask to be put on the do not call list. We still try parents, even of students who graduated, because a lot of them still are willing to make donations.
I asked to be put on the don’t call until kent hance is fired list, but they didn’t know who that was.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

Probably one of the freshman, newb callers...lol
I definitely undestand where you’re coming from; obviously ever since Leach was fired we’ve had many, many alumni ask for the same thing. I was a Leach fan myself, and I really am not a huge fan of Chancellor Hance myself, but to me the University and my love of Tech comes before the man. The students at Tech need the scholarships regardless of who is in charge, and alumni support is the easiest and fastest way to improve Texas Tech. If you put your money towards whatever college you graduated from (engineering, arts and sciences, etc.) Hance never sees it or touches it, and it will directly impact the academics in a postive way.
And if you donate enough, that college gets named after you.
Like the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. So why not the Kent R. Hance College of Political Science for instance? I get what you’re saying, I really do. But I also follow what Frisco has to say.
Technically...
It would be the Kent. R. Hance Department of Political Science, since it is a department within the Collge of Arts and Sciences…ha :)
If we continue on and play like nothing has happened then hance will get away with his treachery. Now if you want to call about donating for a large bronze statue of Leach prominently displayed in front of the stadium, then call away.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

Great idea!
Trust me, you have no idea how much I would love to see a statue of the Captain right outside of the Jones that we could all touch for good luck as we walk in.
But that wouldn’t do anymore for the academics at Tech then a chapel does.
How much would one need to prevent the naming of the chapel after hance?

If you provide over 50% of the cost, then you have the option to have your name on it.
So you’d need to give enough to where Hance was under 50% :/
Kinda sounds like some type of blackmail scheme. We are going name a building after hance unless you pay us off. Can you imagine how money you could raise repeating this scheme over and over.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
by FriscoRaider on Sep 29, 2011 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't say blackmail..
That’s just how things work. Jerry Rawls made a huge gift and got the BA building named after him, same with Ed Whitacre. The whole point in OAG is not to raise money for buildings and naming rights…it’s to improve the academics at Tech and give students the best possible education they can receive from Tech.
Hance made plenty of money outside of the Tech system
and nobody has the right to tell him where or when he should spend it.
I agree, even if he had made the money buying and selling underage immigrants into slavery. It is his money now, but surely we wouldn’t name a building after just anybody.

Honestly as will Nevada's rushing attack
I know we are gun shy about our defense, but Nevada is still the #7 Rushing Offense in the nation.
Since I have the benefit of seeing Nevada play Boise St. every year and this Saturday, the 4-2-5 has trouble with the Pistol. Boise always uses the 5th DB as a spy on the QB on every play, puts your DB’s on a island but you have someone to keep the QB from running wild like Nevada did to us last Saturday. Glasgow choose to play start up, so DJ was making the tackle 7-10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Nevada is going to get yards no matter your game plan. I think our defense has miles to go in the run stopping aspect, but we live in a pass first league so IMO our Rush Defense #’s will get better.

I appreciate it, but I don’t think I’m wanted everywhere. No matter, the key difference here, opposed to other sites that I don’t frequent is that I’ll pretty much let anyone say what they want as long as they don’t call people names and aren’t homophobic, racist, etc. They’ve mandated that any discussion between the former coach and the current coach is not permitted. I’m okay with letting it all play out and although you may see it as disrespectful, others may disagree with you as to your opinion. I do think that almost everyone on DTN loves TTU in some form or fashion, but they also feel very strongly about how Leach was terminated. I won’t censor opinions here so that’s one of the reasons why I think things are a little more feisty here than other places.

As far as the kid (I’m assuming you’re talking about Mr. James), he is taking valuable scholarship money for doing nothing. Back when Fran was the coach at ATM, my dad and two of his brothers would not give any money until Fran was gone. He’s much happier with Sherman (although he wasn’t happy on Sunday after going to BCS), but divided fanbases are part of sports as people have different opinions about players, coaches, etc.

College Station
Your decision to avoid the place must have made things fun around your house and family. Nice choice BTW.
It’s okay. My 2 sisters are Aggies, but a majority of my cousins and uncles are Aggies. We all get along really well and there’s no animosity.
Go Raiders . . .

wow, all the more impressed now
How did you end up the amazing guy that RUNS a Texas Tech fansite with all that going on in the background?
Ok lets be positive then, What could be done to unite the fanbase?

1) Fire Hance? The man has given his life to this university and thats how you want to repay him? Just because he crossed one coach and it was made into a national scene and youre still bitter about it? Have you ever met the man honestly? He is the biggest Tech fan you will ever meet, thats a guarentee and he will do everything in his power to see that Tech improves going forword.
2) Cut James? Your right we should just cut 1 of our only 2 TE’s on the team and just let a freshman play with no backup.
3) Water under the bridge dude.
I believe only Perry can fire hance.
tub coulda fired nancy. (see BCG)
what is this TE you speak of? back before we played football at tech we did not employ a TE
what is this water you speak of?
hance was my blaw teach………an ambulance chaser at best
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
1) Your very sentiment for Hance (that he gave his all for Tech) is how many feel about Leach. Instead of a hypthetical wrong (in your eyes) firing of your fearless leader, Mike was actually canned without just cause. So forgive me that your above statement rings hollow to me, because Mike had more skins on the wall that Kent. We peaked with John Montford, and Kent is no John Montford.
2)Trahan is also a tight end, and if you see what #82 brings to the field….you can just run another package or have a fullback take his spot. He is of no value to anyone playing football.
3)All transgressions are in the past….its a metaphysical thing that goes beyond a blog.

1) So when Mike was looking for new jobs every year, just so he can leverage with the admin so he would receive a higher contract; what do you say to that? Giving the university a 100% effort? Without cause? When you tell your boss to (in cleaner language) “buzz off,” youre gonna get canned. Try that at your job, and see how much longer you will be employed. That was Leach’s problem. His arrogance; and always looking out for himself and never looking out for the best interests of Texas Tech. And thats what got him fired.
College football is a business, and thats a fact if you want to believe it or not.
2) Trahan left the team fyi.
And has that stopped yet? The answer would be NO. So stop acting like Leach was the greatest thing since sliced bread
As long as you're willing to explain why Hance is..

No Politician is pure
Idk why you think Hance has so much to do with this. Myers wrote Leach’s checks, Bailey does all the work
Hance is merely the face of Tech. And if you think he does a shitty job, I think your wrong. Plain and simple.
Well we think you're wrong.
Do we think that your opinion makes you a bad fan? No.
Do we think your opinion means you should jump off a cliff? No.
It's cool
Just watch it next time. But wait a second, in your previous post you said that Bailey does all the work. Does this mean we can bash on him? Please?
He dosent even say anything ever to the press
What did he do that makes you want to bash on him
You said
“Bailey does all the work.” That would imply that he is the one responsible for Craig James and the Little Princess.
When a serious lawsuit is brought against you, what are you gonna do?
Bailey saved Tech alot of money. Simply a financial decision in my opinion.
I never said it was the right decision, because I think Craig is a fricken idiot and cheater going back to his SMU days.
But to bring it out on Adam is wrong, his teamates have and will continue to back that he is a tough worker and thats why he is starting today
Just so we have our priorities right.
Let’s find some other ways to save Tech a lot of money, tons of other faculty around, and librarians and staff. Let’s go all out!

I haven't seen the actual contract but...
How much sense does it make to guarantee a raise in a contract without giving time to see results? Just a thought. Heck, any company you start for you start as part time for about 90 days so they can see how you work before bringing you on full time.
Its called incentive
Just to bring him here, heck to bring anybody here. Unless you wanted to get stuck with Art Briles.
Ruff or Dana would have came too
And Art Briles has made a Top 25 team out of Baylor. Don’t see how any of those are bad choices really.
......Really
Once! After 3 non con games! Thats all hes done after being a doormat.
And Ruffins doing real well I see at 1-2 ECU right now
Helluva lot better than where they were before he came
We’ve had trouble (regardless of coach) beating them since he’s been there.
As for Ruff… do you really think we would be South Carolina or Va. Tech right now? I think not.
I didn't say that they had beat us
I said trouble, as in not an easy win. They’ve gave us a run for our money lately.
So a no good team hired a good coach
And they’ve been on the rise ever since? And this year they are ranked. There’s obviously some coaching going on down there.
Bro. We havent started conference play
Please bring this argument up at the end of the season
They would have never been ranked with previous coaching
Seriously, have you ever seen Baylor ranked in football before?
And most of that came from that they played the first game on national television this season, plus a great win.
I can promise they wont finish the season in the top 25

Support for Leach's legal claims is not a dig at Tuberville
And criticism of Tuberville’s decisions as the football coach is not a defense of Leach. I wasn’t happy with the defense Saturday. I was happy with the offense. If Tubs takes a beating about the decline in defense it is because he promised a better defense & made us one of the worst in the country. Does that mean I don’t like Tuberville? I do like him. He’s a good old boy, not as entertaining as Spike, but he shoots relatively straight. I love what he does on the recruiting trail.
