Red Raider Gridiron | It's Gameday!
GAME DAY! WOOT! | Finally, it's game day. To get you in the mood, if you're not in Lubbock, check out new photos from Totally Texas Tech's TTURed for Will Rogers and Soapsuds being wrapped for the first time this season.
PREVIEWS GALORE | The LAJ has a handful of articles previewing the 2011 season: offense by position, defense by position, profile of Chad Glasgow, ready to take next step under Tuberville, and game day match ups against Texas St. If you're like me, you've carved out the entire day to do nothing except read about and watch college football, so no blockquotes on this stuff. RP.com's Travis Cram has 3 things to watch. DMN's Mike Graham writes that RT Mickey Okafor and DT Donald Langley are your captains for tonight's game.
And to keep track of the national games, check out SB Nation's Sean Keely College Football Buffet.
CONFERENCE IMPLOSION | Per NewsOK's Travis Haney, Oklahoma President David Boren has poured gasoline on the Big 12 (and I mean this in the most complimentary way as I really don't want to see it survive):
"I’ll just put it this way: I think we’ve been ever since we became a member of this conference, we’re a very influential member of the conference. I think we remain a very influential member of the conference. I’ll just put it that way. Influential not only in this conference, but influential in athletics across the country. It’s a tribute to the strength of this program. I’ll put it this way: I don’t think there’s any chance OU’s going to end up being a wallflower."
Boren goes on to say that OU is obviously looking at all of their options and the last part, about not being a wallflower, again I think is indicative of the situation around Texas, in that OU will not let UT dictate what happens to the Sooners.
CBSSports Dennis Dodds writes that the Pac-12 desperately want OU and UT and are willing to take Oklahoma St. and Texas Tech along for the ride. Pacific Takes' Avinash Kunnath has a link from the San Jose Mercury News' John Wilner:
Yes, there have been discussions between the Pac-12 and Texas and Oklahoma, according to sources.
Whether that means Larry Scott and UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds have spoken directly, I cannot confirm.
But whether it’s Scott, deputy commish Kevin Weiberg (who used to run the Big 12) or one of the league’s media consultants on one end of the phone … and Dodds, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione or ESPN officials on the other … the lines of communication are open.
Does that name, Kevin Weiberg sound familiar? It should, he was one of the candidates for the Texas Tech athletic director position and was strangely ruled out (I think) because of a possible conflict of interest (perhaps it was Beebe). I wish I could remember this a bit better, but on numerous levels, I'm glad that Texas Tech reached out to Weiberg and I would think that there's opportunity for dialogue.
And OB.com's Chip Brown (our favorite UT spokesperson) writes that there's a chance:
When I texted a key source close to Texas Friday night if the Longhorns were preparing to head to the Pac-12 with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, the source texted back, "Leaning that way." The source later said there was a "50 to 60 percent" chance those schools would end up in the Pac-12.
Any move by Texas to the Pac-12 would not be an easy one. First, there is the issue of the Longhorn Network. No schools in the Pac-12 are allowed to have their own network. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott has set up a series of regional networks that partner two schools together to share revenue from third-tier rights with each other and with the Pac-12.
So Texas' Longhorn Network, which launched on Aug. 26 and still can't even be seen by most of the Lone Star State, would likely have to be turned into one of the Pac-12's regional networks (and most likely partner with Texas Tech).
And that could mean Texas basically tearing up the 20-year, $300 million deal it just inked with ESPN and giving up its riches.
I said this yesterday in the comments and I'll say it again. I'm not going to get my hopes up and think that this is even close to being a done deal or that Texas Tech going to the Pac-12 (it sounds so dreamy) is anything more than a random opportunity. Last year, Chip Brown let it be know that UT, OU, OSU and TTU were all going to the Pac-12 and it was a done deal. Little did we know, this was merely a power play and Brown was most likely the pawn to force the remaining Big 12 schools to give the big boys in the conference everything they wanted. I have an eerily similar feeling and I don't like it.#

There is no one left “to give the big boys in the conference everything they wanted.” I would rather go anywhere than be a prostitute on the Dodds/ut Pantation.
On another note, Football is finally here. Take out our frustrations on Texas State? Yes.
I loved the Baylor win last night.
I have to go to Corpus this weekend, a wife activity, but hope to watch football today and tonight.
Seth, you are the best.

That Baylor win must be bittersweet
While the Bears fans are going apesh&t in Waco & on national TV, OU’s President is giving interviews condemning their athletic programs to death basically. I feel for them coming home from such a huge win to the death of the Big 12 news we’re all digesting this morning.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
To schools like Baylor, SMU, Iowa State, KState, and their ilk, I think not being in a BCS conference is a big deal. Sure, their fans may want that. But they know that even if they are in an AQ conference, they will almost never compete for a slot in the BCS.
We are hoping for one, but we’ve only sniffed it once in the history of the BCS. It’s more about the ego gratification that comes along with being in an AQ conference. Not to say they shouldn’t strive for that, but if it doesn’t happen the impact is fairly minimal.
To schools like Tech, OSU, Arizona and others who have come close but never broken through it’s a much bigger deal. We actually have a legit shot in the next year or two for a BCS bid – especially next year (I hope). And when you consistently win 8-9 games a year like we and others like us do, it DOES matter. We will all eventually catch lightning in a bottle and make a 11 win run every five or six years.
baylor
So is TCU that bad? Or is baylor that good? I bet tcu misses glasgow. Their secondary sucks this year.

That last part is why...
…the Pac 12 needs to make very strong overtures directly to Tech and OKST in the next couple of days. Sure it would be a gamble on Scott’s part, but I think it would turn out to be a shrewd move. He could absolutely force UT and OU to make a decision, and I believe they have only one real choice: join the Pac 12. Both Tech and State would be ecstatic to not be under the thumbs of their “Big Brother” schools any longer and would leave in a heartbeat, thereby gutting any chance UT has of band aiding the Big 12. Both UT and OU would be happy to be in the Pac anyway. They are just dicking around right now because they can and they are trying to maximize their power. If the Pac offers Tech and State – OU and Texas won’t have the Big 12 to play with any more and it’s a done deal. If you’re Scott – you are forever known as the genius that snagged UT and OU and created the biggest badd ass conference of the next century.

I liked the article on the Ohio State SBNation site.
Not being considered anyone’s problem is a good thing. Funny video of the bear, Seth. Bk. I have an eerily similar feeling and I don’t like it.# I know that feeling, esp. when Hocutt says we are nervous. I hope he means we are nervous with excitement rather than nervous with dread. I do think that our chances to get invited to PAC-XX go up if A&M and Missou take other paths. Would be fine with A&M, TTU, OU, and OSU to Pac-xx. Let Texas and Missou go to BIG or anywhere else.
Also Keeping Track of WVU & ECU?
Will all of you be keeping up with Ruff, Riley, & Dana? #12 South Carolina @ East Carolina at 6:00 central time. (ECU also gets #13 Virgina Tech next week.) Then Marshall @ West Virgina on Sunday! 2:30 on The Craig James channel. Wishing all of these men good luck all season.
Just to let everyone know…No free streaming this year. :-( http://www.worldtvpc.com/blog/feds-arrest-texas-man-illegal-website-streaming/
Oh dang. Our free website from last year, Channelsurfing.net, got shut down and the owner was arrested for copyright issues. I guess we will have to pay through texastech.com if we want to watch the game! At least the money goes to Tech and not some sleazy third party like the LHN and those associated with them.
No free streaming from them.
I have a list, I’ll bring it up before the game starts.

not that I trust Chip Brown at all
but pairing up with UT on a rebranded network sounds intriguing. We probably wouldn’t be able to get a 50-50 split in airtime OR revenue, but it would still be a foothold that aTm would miss out on. That really could help lead to aTm being less relevant in the state and help TTU take a step towards solidifying themselves as at least the second best program in the state
I thought that the rebrand was only as a Pac affiliate.
At which point it would still be subject to Pac 12 sharing rules. Or did I miss read Chip?

UT won’t dictate. The conference will.

i guess my point more relates to us and UT being more tied together and aTm becoming a third wheel

LHN is also under contract with ESPN, Pac 12 = Fox
LHN contract says if Texas leaves the Big 12-2-1, then they have a cure period of 30 days to renegotiate. ESPN will have to go away and UT will have to sign on under PAC 16 ownership. That will require a payoff of ESPN initial investment, I assume Scott will rake them over the coals but will make the payment that is required to get it down.

BTW: The countdown clock is off
It is currently 10:45am on Saturday, Sept 3, 2011 and the clock is telling me that the game starts in 1 hour 14 minutes.
That would mean the game starts at 12 noon but it doesn’t it starts at 6pm today.
On PDT time the clock is off by more than 9 hours

Here is hoping that Tech and osu make the first move with the PAC12 and force ut and ou to move too.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the move be Tech, atm, ou and osu and leave ut to fend elsewhere but I think the deal is almost complete for atm to go to the SEC.

Just maybe TCU is missing their DB coach from last year?
Could that mean that we have a good D coordinator?
Especially after all the SR's they graduated last year, needed a strong coach to get them ready to play.
I have no doubts Glasgow can coach, questions can he call a gameplan in live action? We will find out soon enough though.
