Post Game Thoughts | Texas St. Bobcats 10, Texas Tech Red Raiders 50

Box Score | Post Game Quotes | Post Game Press Conference

THE RESULT | A TALE OF TWO HALVES | Almost everything that could go wrong or just look downright ugly in the first half did go wrong or look ugly. Texas Tech had two turnovers, a pitiful looking offense and a defense that looked like it didn't have a clue. After halftime, it felt like two different teams. I'll get more into Doege a bit later, but I forgot that the wind was blowing 25 MPH as he kept working a 20 to 30 yard window down the field to look for Moore and take advantage of that. It was really a beautiful to watch him play. I'd also add that the defense figured it out in the second half and I think that someone mentioned this in the post-game thread, which is that perhaps the silver lining, at least with the defense is that Glasgow either motivated or coached up his players to be in the right spots in the second half.

THE STORYLINES

MOORE IS BETTER | The coaching staff kept talking about how good WR Darrin Moore was during the camp and that he was going to explode on the scene. Well, he did. Moore was good for 12 catches, 221 yards, 2 touchdowns and 18.41 yards/reception. Moore was physically dominating and he might not have that type of advantage in the Big 12, but the way that Doege was pin-pointing his passes to Moore was a thing of beauty. Moore's father passed away during the early part of fall camp and he's performed. In Moore's post-game quotes, he said that he did okay, but needs to correct the fumbles and he's right. Ball security is a huge part of football and I think he was told that by the staff. I also like to read things like this:

Q. Talk about the relationship between you and Seth Doege. Looked like you were all clicking really well tonight, 221 yards receiving.

DARRIN MOORE: Yeah, me and Seth have a real good relationship. I mean, day after day, in the summer, spring, I mean, getting extra work after practice. We worked a lot together. So I feel like we've got a pretty good relationship.

THERE ARE PROBLEMS | No game is perfect. The nice thing is that I don't think that any of the mistakes aren't correctable. As an example, I thought the defensive line was just getting bulldozed in the first half (and they were), but Glasgow and Tuberville both said that it was about alignments and getting in the right spot. The second half, it was a different story. Glasgow mentioned that part of the problem was that he didn't have any film on Texas St. so you'd like to give him some credit for correcting that issue (discussed more below). I absolutely hated to see Doege getting crushed after RT Mickey Okafor was absolutely beaten off the edge. There is a reason why Okafor doesn't play left tackle and this is it. Okafor's lack of consistency doesn't get Texas Tech beat too much from the right side, but he has to be better if Doege is to survive the season. There were too many fumbles.

There was one play, it was a long third down for Texas St. and the Texas Tech defense essentially rushed four players and backed the linebackers so far off the line of scrimmage that they were entirely out of position and the Texas St. QB, Rutherford, scrambled for the first down. That didn't make a lick of sense. DC Glasgow said after the game that the rush defense was unacceptable. This is true considering that Texas St. rushed for 273, yes, that's not a typo, 273 yards for a 5.1 YPC average. Again, if it truly was an alignment issue, then maybe Texas Tech will be okay. The pass defense really didn't get tested at all, but I think it was CB Derrick Mays that was trailing a Texas St. receiver on two deep throws. One throw, Mays was called for interference, rightfully so, and the second was just out of reach of the receiver. This was talked about during the camp, but the defensive backs cannot afford to get beat on deep plays. Again, remaining somewhat hopeful, I think that these problems can be corrected and I don't think that this team was the worst team ever.  There are things that need to be remedied, but I find it incredibly frustrating to get too concerned about a game that ended up being a 40 point win.

REDSHIRTS REMOVED | By my count, the following players had their redshirts removed: LB Blake Dees, WR Bradley Marquez, SS Pete Robertson, LB Sam Eguavoen, RB DeAndre Washington, TE Jace Amaro, DE Kindred Evans, C Alfredo Morales, WR Marcus Kennard and DT Dennell Wesley. There was talk during the fall camp that Kennard would be redshirted, but apparently he played. I remembered him going up for a pass and looking a bit over-matched. I think he would have benefited from a redshirt, especially with so many options at receiver, but I'm thinking that Kennard may have been a bit nervous about being passed up if he doesn't get on the field. I threw Wesley in with this group as he could have been redshirted, so there's eight freshmen that played significant minutes this game.

Additional Storylines and MVP's after the jump.

Star-divide

DARTWAN MAKES PLAYS | DE Dartwan Bush had a productive game and he made plays. Bush was only in on 4 tackles, but he had 1.0 TFL, 2 forced fumbles and he tipped a pass. He looked really athletic and I think I read something before the game that Bush was really excited about the defensive change because he would be able to utilize his his speed (maybe it was DE Aundrey Barr) by lining up outside the offensive tackle and not line up taking on the tackle one-on-one, but you could see where guys like Barr and Bush would be able to take advantage of their speed on the outisde.

WESLEY AND MACKEY WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE | I loved what DT Dennell Wesley brought to the table. Wesley is not a 320 pound blob that just takes up space. Wesley is an athletic mover that can and will make a difference. He's not starting, but he's a good football player that doesn't just run himself out of plays. Wesley was paired with DT Chris Perry, who looked like a different person -- so much more athletic than last year -- and I realy like that combination. I think Wesley could have as big of an impact as Mackey does and I love Mackey. Despite getting injured, some sort of chest contusion, Mackey is more than capable of being a significant play-maker on defense.

DEES SAYS ADJUSTMENTS AT HALF | LB Blake Dees had a short Q&A after the game, but he said that at halftime Glasgow went over the personnel and types of plays at halftime. I mentioned this above, but I love the idea that Glasgow can and will coach players up at halftime. Glasgow mentioned it in his post-game presser, but he said that he wasn't sure what to expect, that Texas St. ran 60% of their plays in 22 personnel (2 RB and 2 TE) and that they weren't sure what to expect from the Bobcats. I'll dig into the data later in the week, but the defense was significantly better in the second half and if adjustments were made, that's good for this team.

MCDANIEL WILL GET BETTER | C Terry McDaniel didn't have the best day at center, but something that OC Neal Brown said after the game was that Terry will get better. I can recall at least one blitz that McDaniel missed that got Doege pressured, but I'm incredibly confident that McDaniel will be able to make significant adjustments to his game within the next two weeks. Overall, I thought that McDaniel's performance, playing center for the first time in his career, he looked pretty darned good.

FRESHMEN GET TOUCHDOWNS | When WR Bradley Marquez grabbed a fade route for a touchdown I had to do a double-take because I wasn't sure who was making that catch. It looked like Bradley had been playing for 2 years and was a veteran. The fade route wasn't the reason why Marquez's redshirt was removed, it was for his down the field possibilities, but if he can do this too, then I think the staff knows they have something special. RB DeAndre Washington struggled a bit and looked somewhat tentative, but in his touchdown run, it was what you can probably expect from the true freshman. I was a bit surprised by his speed, but maybe I shouldn't have been surprised. OC Brown acknowledged that Washington has to work on not fumbling the ball. This is the big-time and he can't have mistakes like that, but overall, I thought he could add something to the team.

OFFENSIVE MVP | WR DARRIN MOORE | As said above, he may not be able to be more physical against every team's cornerbacks, but Doege and Moore took advantage of a significant matchup advantage for Texas Tech. I realize that I haven't even talked about Doege, who was efficient and didn't make mistakes (I think he had one poor throw that was almost intercepted).  Doege was pretty good, as was Stephens.  Both had good days, but Moore was better.

DEFENSIVE MVP | DE DARTWAN BUSH | Made some significant plays for the team when they needed it most. Very much impressed with his game and what he'll be able to do.

SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | K DONNIE CARONA | No missed extra points!

But a win is a win even when you play high school teams. Moore is a beast. Note to nb. Give up calling it nascar. Oh and bench 82.

Pretty sure I saw him play in 2nd half, so there is another redshirt gone (although nobody expected him to redshirt anyway).

I've seen this breaking of a rule stated a couple of times on this blog

But haven’t heard a word from the coaching staff about why RD is suddenly in the dog house. I hope it’s not a year-long banishment like Scotty’s. Of course, having posted about his exploits last year, I was more disappointed than most about this sudden, unexpected development. By all accounts, he’s a great student as well as athlete. Tuberville even mentioned one time that he probably would be elected student body president. Has anyone seen anything official?

Defense overreacted in the first half and looked lost

…knowing the young defense desire to swarm, Francione installed a rushing offense with a lot of counters, reverses, and other mis-direction plays and it worked til midway through the 3rd qtr before the wheels fell off. Good coaching by TSU and adjustments by Tech’s staff. Secondly, I felt our offense was too predictable.

That, mojave, is one of the most

cogent things ever written on this blog. Great, great point.

In fact, pretty much every offense is “predictable” if you think about it. Oregon and Boise are among the very few who you just don’t know what is coming next. But for the rest of us, it’s obvious.

It takes all the guesswork out of it. They can start thinking ahead to what sort of pass they’ll see on 2nd down.

So I'm scanning through the box score

Run/Pass 54/56, Tech ran more than it passed in the following situations: 1st&10, 2nd&Med, 3rd&Short… The no-huddle offense is again going to put a huge amount of pressure on the defense by limiting our ToP and shortening both successful and unsuccessful drives… Blake Dees knows how to rock the Mike… I assume Erxleben was kicking into the face of that weather front…I counted 14 offensive plays that went for more than 15 yards (2 runs/12 passes) so our explosive play percentage was extremely good… Tech’s defense gave up 3 4th down conversions, all in the 1st Quarter and overall gave up up 3rd down conversions 1/3 of the time… Eric Stephens already has 2 fumbles… Each team had only one penalty, that is… irregular for a season opener

by mojavereject on Sep 4, 2011 9:51 AM CDT reply actions

this is exactly why you schedule a game like that the first game...

look around the country…really nobody played well except maybe LSU…think of it as a pre season game…plus we really didn’t know what Fran was going to throw at us…must say, our DC did make some adjustments…that is promising…

T. State Fumbles

So how different would the game have been had the other team not given us the ball 4 times on fumbles? Were these fumbles caused by our defense or were they just giving it to us? What I saw – on the radio – was a Texas State team that ran the ball up & down the field on Tech. Without the fumbles how many rushing yards would they have had? Maybe we still win but how much closer would it have been? 40-20 or more like 28-24?

And then Tech had 4 fumbles, but only one of these went to State. This is a problem too. This game could have been different.

by ScottTTU on Sep 4, 2011 9:58 AM CDT reply actions

Watched the game online...

those fumbles were caused by hits at the right time… Mostly due to the fact that they had a QB toting the ball most of the time. At times we looked lost, but in the red zone they really tightened up and smacked the ball carriers good.

Fumbles were legit … though if we hadn’t made them we would have been looking at a different game. I was impressed to see a “bend but don’t break” defense that didn’t break for once.

by Vassago77379 on Sep 4, 2011 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I will take a bend but don’t break defense that wins us games. Look at the 2009 Saints team that was essentially a bend but don’t break defense they just had a ton of turnovers.

by ST04 on Sep 4, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

You are right. I agree fully

I just hope we don’t need 4 fumbles lost by the other team to win the tougher Big12 games because that isn’t going to happen.

by ScottTTU on Sep 4, 2011 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

we lost only 1, not 4 like state

one lost fumble hurts, but a turnover is a very common thing that most teams deal with in most games. 4 virtually guarantees you lose the game.

So

I watched the game last night then jumped over to re-hash the game day threads this morning, and was really surprised by the negativity throughout the game (albeit extremely funny negativity). Some overwhelming observations from the opener:
- There were SO MANY freshman and new guys playing their 1st D-1 ballgame.
- We just installed a brand new type of defense and have true freshman and juco’s executing said new defense.
-On top of that, Glascow knew nothing of Texas ST, schemes, or what they would try to do.
Despite those three things, we only gave up 10 points!!!!!!! Only allowed 48 yds passing!!! With so many new guys and true freshman (like, guys straight out of high school football) I dont care who youre playing, if you have freshman playing, youre vulnerable, and the kids did all right. I mean, Iowa St, k-state, washington, oregon st, all almost lost (oregon st did lose) to FBS teams. No game is a gimmie, and despite all our youth and inexperience we won our 1st game by 40. It was a success. Some other thoughts from the game:
- I thought Seth Doege looked REAL good. After bitching about how bad Potts was the last 2 years it was so refreshing to see Doege be technically sound, have a quick release, make quick decisions and not sit there and jerk-off in the pocket while making his reads a la Potts, not throw off his back foot, throw darts with a beautiful spiral on almost every ball…..im telling you guys, we’ve got a wicked quarterback for the next 2 years.
- Bradley Marquez is gonna be special. So excited about him and we havent even seen Daniels yet. What a recruiting class.
- for the next 4 years every time Blake Dees makes a play, we get to scream ‘Dees Nuts’
- Thought we would see more from our lines. Both of them. Our O-line shoulda been dough popping Texas ST. off the ball and they were mediocre. The running backs couldnt break anything. D-line got worked a little as well. I dont know, I just wanted to see some physical dominance against an FBS team and it wasnt there, which I think is the biggest concern coming away from this game. If we’re not going to out-muscle people at some points we’re not gonna win a lot of games b/c not sure this coaching staff can out coach a lot of the Big 12.
-Still not sure about Tremaine Swindall. When has he ever done anything? He doesnt ever appear to have separation, drops balls, inconsistent. Would love to see one of the young guys in there instead of him.
- Adam James disrespects the turf @ the Jones everytime he steps on the field. Like his dad, he needs to go away.
-Between Doege, Mackey, Scott Smith coming back, freshman skill players, pete robertson, hubert + dees wreaking havoc @ linebacker, Bullitt looking good last night, Darrin Moore dominating, Delvon Simmons, Wesley, this year is looking really good. A lot better than I thought, and not to mention our future with all these young guys in the Pac16 bitches

by neosox on Sep 4, 2011 10:40 AM CDT reply actions

Swindall might be the best blocking receiver the team has

which makes him a very consistent if sometimes invisible contributor to the short passing game

by mojavereject on Sep 4, 2011 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I would have to disagree on the swindall being the best blocker. The inside receivers by design do more blocking for the outside receivers and not the other way around. Torres is by far the best blocker. There are many plays where the inside receivers don’t even run routes but the go straight out and block. Just saying.
By the way I think i was the first one to say “dees nuts” yesterday. Lol

It’s whem I get pissed I want to whine to somebody & so the laptop gets booted up. I loved the second half. I’ll be watching the run defense over the next couple games, but that was my biggest concern. I wish Carona had had a couple FG chances. I don’t want his 1st attempt in a game situation to be for all the marbles. If he needs to be replaced we need to know that before conference play begins. His PATs were solid. That’s a good start & a great improvement over 2008.

Would love to see the stats broken down by quarters or halves. Anybody know where to find that?

Also, Doege made some grown man type throws. Was very encouraged by what I saw out of him. Much better than Potts’ 3 interception debut against North Dakota.

Truth is, despite the awful first half, I already feel better about this team than I did last year’s. Much because of Doege.

The view from the bleachers

-o line sucked and should be embarassed. Namely Okafor and Waddle
-Doege will be fine and Karam’s td to eric ward was nice
-Moore is a beast, apparently the 30 mph winds kept directing the ball towards him. There can be no other explanation for the lack of balance in pass distrubtion.
-running game was vanilla at best. Would it kill them to call a toss sweep every now and then? I did hear that the 46 yard touchdown was an audible by Doege from a pass play. Well done.
-Bush and Dees are going to be great players
-DJ Johnson has improved significantly and made some good tackles
-I’m trying not to overreact to the slow start, good halftime adjustments and 3 quarters of shutout football (hat tip Tstate)

I listened to the game on the Bobcat affiliate site.

So, the announcers were way positive for anything done by TX St. But, they were not really very well prepared as they got the Tech players names mixed up a lot when compared to what was being shown on the GameCast from the Tech Official Site. Just from what I was able to observe through both mediums, it seemed State was just taking it to Tech in the first half, while Tech was seemingly trying to find some kind of rythm on all sides of the ball.

While I do tire of hearing about the weather from Tubs, the sandstorm, high winds and mud drops actually seemed to bother both teams in the first half. Texas Tech made a huge turn.around in the second half and dominated everywhere, except that State was still able to get a few good runs in on occasion.

The freshmen are going to have huge careers at Texas Tech. To have 8 to 10 freshmen making significant contributions in their fist college game is amazing. The fact Tech NEEEDED those contributions however is a bit disconcerting. We anticipated it happening, but for it to actually transpire so soon was a bit surprising.

Doege to Moore took advantage of a huge mismatch situation that made the numbers a bit skewed from the norm. I expect the top receivers to be different in several games this year. Zoo could be the next one to grab 10+ passes, but any other receiver could also be the benefactor of some mismatch. I am very pleased the OC and Doege saw the openings and used them to Tech’s advantage. Wherever the mismatch is in future games, I hope the advantage will always be exploited. Single coverages on the rest of the receivers from here on out could be huge, as Doege should be able to recognize that and go after it often and with great results.

The O-line was not where Tech needs them to be. I hope the get everything corrected before the next game. The D-line is in a similar position, although they stepped up in the second half. The RBs were OK, but will do even better when the O-line straightens out some errors.

Special teams did not hurt Tech. Nuf said.

Pike that is my point;

Number 14 was awsome, but do we really think we will get those mismatches in the Big 12. I don’t think so. Loved the way Moore broke out, but he did that against little defender. Moore did what the rest of the team should have done, dominate undersized and less athletic players.

My observations

-Deoge is going to be great if they let the run game open up the downfield pass. It was so refreshing to see out QB throw a pass more than 5 yards. We need big plays for hype. I think that is something that has lacked the past two years.

-OC Brown needs to run the hurry up more. If you’re going to call it NASCAR, let it rip. It seemed like in the hurry up we dominated. The defense was on their heels and guessing, but every time there was an adjustment made and slowed the tempo down and we would get slammed. Open it up.

-Eric Stephens is a beast.

—Darrin Moore is a beast.

-I really like the El Pistola formation.

-The opening video segment where Tubs says “Guns up.” is awesome.

We must have been watching different hurry ups...

When they had tsu on their heels in the second half, it was effective. However, earlier… before they had established positive offensive momentum… all they did is hurry into a couple of three and outs. NB needs to quit thinking of the hurry up as a good in and of itself and start using it as a means of controlling the pace. Sometimes, a slow calculating pace is better.

by battledome on Sep 4, 2011 5:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I understand and agree

I guess what I meant was that we would run the hurry up offense then we we just stop. I figure if we keep it going it would be more effective.

what happens with hurry up teams is that

to be truly effective with it, you have to commit fully. Look at Oregon last year. They kept the highest pace of any team, but often they’d turn in lackluster first halves, only to detonate in the second half and score again and again at a mind-boggling pace. My way of thinking about it is that It’s just one of those things that doesn’t work until it does, and until that happens, yeah, you’re going to be home of the league’s fastest 3-and-outs… but when it does work, you’re executing a highly efficient offense at a rate that the defense can’t adjust to.

by mojavereject on Sep 4, 2011 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

About NASCAR...

If you’re going to run a hurry-up offense, then by damn I never want to see the other team throw a challenge flag against our offense unless it was a first down. Seeing our team lolly-gag around while Fran was trying to decide whether to throw the challenge flag out was very frustrating.

my POV from 114

1.) Doege has assured me that he will be ROCK SOLID this season and next. VERY impressed with his performance last night.

2.) Running game looked like how it should be. Omar Ontiveros was a hoss blowing up huge holes for Stephens to run through.

3.) D was a little lost in the 1st half but they rebounded well and shut down TXST. I hope to see this kind of performance from the D all season.

4.) Darrin Moore was boss hog on candy last night. Wake up notice for the big 12?

5.) Bring on the lobos!

I was at the game, and here is my take;

The best part was when the dust storm rolled it, there was a chance for rain. Everyone is the stadium stoop up with hands out as if our prayer had been answered. Weather got the first standing ovation, and it didnt’ happen, kinda like the game.

I was very disappointed in Russian Coffee first game performance. I did not see anything from this defense that showed me we will be a top 75 defense. Mackey looked good, but somehow we are still slow. After the game one of the hosts made a comment, if this was aTm, they would have rushed for 1,400 yards. He is right. We are in trouble.

Doege overall did okay. He has a great arm and his accuracy is pretty good. He managed the offense, but I blame NB. I thought the play calling absolutely sucked. Everything was predictable, and I just don’t know what to say. This offense is giong to struggle.

My overall take is this is a 6-6 season at best. Playing lots of young guys, sure but if they are not ready, then red shrt them and go with experience. Hay Tubby, I guess that basic old bend don’t break Ruffin defesne sucked. Sure wish we had it back.

Going to be a long season.

The thing we have to remember about the defense is, they had NO real idea what was going to be put out there by Texas St. There wasn’t any game film to watch, because they have a new coaching staff. Once they had the measure of Texas St., by the end of the first quarter, TSU didn’t score again. Isn’t that the very definition of bend but don’t break? It also shows me that Glasgow is a very VERY good in-game coach, which we haven’t had on the defensive side of the ball in over ten years (with the possible exception of Ruff).

Now, if we see the first quarter defense again in two weeks, I’ll worry a lot more. I agree that THAT defense will lose control of the in-conference games before the offense can take control. However, even then, the defense will at least have SOME game film for every other team played this year.

I agree with you completely about Neil Brown. If he doesn’t figure out how to use the entire field, and to change the plays up better, we’re going to be in trouble. He can’t do like last year and wait until game 8 or 9 to get his personnel figured out.

I also worry about playing that many new guys. I knew it was going to happen on the D-Line, but there were other areas that it surprised me. That concerns me.

I’m sticking with 8-4. I think we lose to Oklahoma, and three of the following: Missouri,, Oklahoma St, Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor. I think we’ll win either Oklahoma St or Texas A&M, but not both. Texas did nothing to impress me yesterday, but this team has to learn how to win down in Austin. That same exact sentiment goes for Missouri too (not impressive, but we don’t beat them on the road). The opposite is true for Baylor. They have a very very good offense, but I’m not sure they know how to beat Tech.

I appreciate your comments, but C'mon Man;

Your telling me that Three and Four Star athletes can’t out leverage players who were not recruited by Division I. Sorry, man, you can’t sell me swamp land in Flordia, if even there is a drought.

We did not stop Texas State, they stopped themselves. We were down 10-9 at the half, and they came out and ran the ball down our throat to start the second half. If their QB does not fumble at our 10, we are down 17-9 and who knows what our attitude would be then.

I will give you that we started two freshman LB’s, and it was our first game out with a new scheme, and I love Russian Coffee, but we did not stop then, they stopped themselves.

We will see in the next four weeks, but we are in Big trouble.

A lot of it

had little to do with leverage, and more to do with being out of position. Again, if we see the same type of thing happen against UNM in the first half, THEN I’ll worry a lot more. Especially since I think Texas St’s offense may be better than New Mexico’s.

Most (if not all) of those fumbles by TSU were not just dropped balls, they were balls ripped away from the player by the defense that is getting blasted so hard. The defense put their helmets or hands on the ball and forced those fumbles. I agree they got torn up against the run, and that has to improve, but they deserve credit for the fumbles too. If we’re going to talk about gifts by TSU, we should focus more on the penalty yards they handed us.

Maybe I’m focusing too much on the fact we outscored TSU 41-0 in the second half. Maybe I’m focusing on how that defense, that played so poorly in the first half (which I agree with), STILL only gave up 10 points. Maybe I’m focusing too much on this being the first game of the season. Maybe I’m focusing too much on TSU having a completely new set of coaches.

But that IS what I’m focusing on. Since I’m focusing on the 41-0 second half, I’m not going to panic unless we see that first-half defense against New Mexico.

I am not at all that disappointed. I was beside myself at halftime. I felt much better in the second half. I have many positives. Doege is going to be good. Moore stepped up, and I thought freshman were not all that bad. I thought the overal play calling by NB was terrible, but I am sure they wanted to ease in Doege.

I was really disappointed in Russian Coffee. There is no way, under any cirucumstances, that you can be excited about giving up over 250 yards rushing to a team that went 4-7 last year, and has a new coach who had not time to recruit his players.

What I saw on RaiderVision, besides bad announcers.

The -line was so dissapointing. But I give benefit of doubt becasue NB defened them. I was expecting a beat-down, but TSU had some big boys in there. The DC needs to be able to stop the OL in the backfield because A&M will kill us with that formation.

Defense was the usual bend but break on theird down. How many times did they have the ball carrier wrapped two yards short on third down only to spin them forward across the down-line? Those 3rd and longs that TSU made such a high % on. I give credit that they did not give up after keeping TSU on the field so much of the game, but really, letting them avg. over 5yds per rush will not fly. Not enough pressure in the backfield. I was predciting a multiple-sack game. I prefer to hope they will adjust.

Concerned about injuries to Mackey and Cody Davis and Corn Dog. And I felt Mays was a weak spot. I can’t remember if he played run defense. Looked lost on pass defense. May need to be replaced.

Excellent adjustments by both OC and DC at half. I have always felt that is what makes some teams so much harder to beat than others.

Receivers need to stop dropping balls, and Stephens did not impress me because the fumbles are drive killers, momentum changers, and often sure points for the other team. It demoralizes the D. I prefer to keep him on a short leash if he fumbles again. What about Kenny Williams?

Excellent discipline with penalties. Never seen such a good job by Tech. No PF excdpt excessive celebration (really!!!), no false starts. Great job.

Love that Doege throws long so often. Keep that up. He looks like a leader out there.

Use Marquez more. And McRabbit.

Considering all circumstances, B for defense, mainly for 3rd-and-long and 4th-down give ups after the hit. A- for offense but an avg. of C in first half and A+ in second. Special teams B+ for no turnovers in a squirrely wind. Overall, they did score 50 points, and beat the spread.

Doege played good football…he knows better than any one of me the things he wants to improve.

Thinking about Kennard, he was being considered for RS—something I find weird at this point. But he played, and without much to show for it…that bothers me, not because of him, but because of the rest of the receivers—who is not better than that particular performance on part of a JC guy who was being considered for a RS.

This bothers me:

Moore: 12 for 221 ( although that is great !!! Awesomely so !! But )
Torres: 4 for 58
Douglas: 2 for 15
Washington: 2 for 8
Ward: 2 for 6
Swindall: 1 for 20
Marquez: 1 for 10
Zouzalik: 1 for 10
If that represents the two deep, and it may not, 75% of the distributed completions is one or two per receiver……

I am also worried about the OL still, I want Koewn back now !! and Tony M !!! All because we need the depth…and development.

I am very pleased, very pleased with the results from the defense as a game. The only stat that matters is 10 points—the only td is off a turn over. Shutout for 3 quarters. Scored a safety. 5 punts, 4 fumbles to get the ball back to the offense. TTU gave them the ball six times in the 3rd and 4th quarters off of our TD’s…got abt 37 plays for about 170 yards—and the entire defense is pointing to the notion that we allowed too much on the ground….I see that is all good especially with almost no idea of how to game plan for the Bobcat offense.

Hope Mackey is o.k., he looked to have hurt his left arm / shoulder on a tackle in the 1st qtr—maybe early 2nd, tackled a guy with a wrestle take down in which he landed on his left arm / shoulder and came up looking like he was favoring the arm.

Crawford has to come out of this injury o.k.—I want him to have a good senior year, he has been after it for so long.

Davis’ concussion, hope it is mild, very mild….even precautionary…he is a key on defense.

by TallMike on Sep 4, 2011 9:37 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed, the ball distribution has to improve a great deal. I don’t have any issue with Moore being the go-to guy on the deep ball, but the other receivers need to get more opportunities. I don’t know if that falls on Doege or Brown, but I tend to point to Brown, because Potts did the same exact thing last year. To me, this falls back to Brown not using the full field.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 4, 2011 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Look at it like this…if we throw 35 times, and complete 25…how do you want it to look?

A bunch of guys with two catches that really don’t pose a big threat to the other team? Or a guy we can count on that forces an opponent to spend time scheming how to shut him down. If the other guys are open, Doege will get the ball to them.

Honestly, this is one of the weirdest complaints I’ve ever heard. This isn’t Air Raid where you get everyone a catch or two, boys. This is different. And it worked pretty damn well last night.

I'm still remembering the Texas game

when Potts threw six consecutive passes to the same exact position. Not the same receiver, because the personnel was getting changed out, but whoever the receiver was on the right side was getting the ball thrown to him. By the end of that drive, EVERYONE knew what the play was going to be, even my 10-year old cousin. That’s what I mean about poor ball distribution, and that falls on the OC.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 4, 2011 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree, but not hugely. A typical play for Tech has five guys in the route tree. There is a primary, secondary, on down the line. If Moore is the primary on most plays, as he should be given his size and obvious ability (much like a guy we had a few seasons ago who wore #5), AND he’s open, then by God keep throwing it to him until they can stop it. You don’t spread it around just for the sake of spreading it around if something is working.. You force the other guy to stop it first. If they can’t you keep going. My thoughts.

by Tech92 on Sep 5, 2011 7:42 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll agree to an extent

Again, I’m thinking about that Texas game last year. On that one drive, the first couple worked, and Potts kept working the same play. However, as you said, “keep throwing it to him until they can stop it.” The corollary to that is “when they stop it, do something else.” There have been times when Brown doesn’t adjust quickly enough to what the defense does.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 5, 2011 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know....putting the ball distribution may not be fair to Brown.

He does not make the progressions, if we are still reading, if we are not we are not playing Div1 football…first year high school stuff.

I tend to think the distribution is on the QB, Harrell had a propensity to focus—well he had Crabtree, but from that time forward distribution has not been balanced in comparison with the way it was pre-Harrell.

why the negativity?

What makes me laugh about you “overly positive” types is that you bash people for not having super high expectations, but then you won’t hear when those same people are disappointed. all you guys who drink whatever kool-aid is put before you keep telling everyone is to have high expectations because everything is gonna be great. Tuberville is great, the freshmen are great, the team will be great, so forth, so on. But the reality is, if you have great expectations and you watch a first half in which your team is barely beating a good 5A high school team, you should be upset. That’s the very nature of high expectations. It’s one or the other, unless we win a national title…and I don’t think I remember that happening. Fact is, despite the final score, if you had high expectations based on Tuby’s words, the recruiting class, or whatever…there is reason to be worried and annoyed. Texas St., in reality, is AWFUL…and the kinda lapse that we showed for over a half will get you beat by most FBS teams. Is the season over? Absolutely not…but it’s ok to voice annoyance. That shows they expect more…as well they should.

You gotta love the diversity of views here. You don’t really get that anywhere else. Seth doesn’t pull the plug on anyone who does not follow the party line. Seth does not allow posters to personally attack others who don’t share the same view.

I think there are a lot of positives and a lot of negatives. It’s the first game of a long season. We got the win. We played a lousy first half and a great second half against a terrible opponent. Let’s be honest, the game was never really in doubt even when we were playing poorly.

I remember being beside myself when we gave up 17 points in the second quarter to Eastern Washington (whom we had to schedule as a fill-in to replace Tulsa which backed out to play Arkansas instead) in 2008. That year we ended up 11-2.

It could have been worse. Missouri, Kansas State and Iowa State beat their FCS opponents by a COMBINED 15 points.

As long as the game gives us the building blocks to improve for the next game, we’re in good shape.

Your argument works both ways. We have tons of newbies on the field. They could all be Heismans or duds. We have a little bit better idea after this game. Flashes of brilliance and lots of head scratchers. Again, it’s just the first game. We’re probably not going 11-0 from here and we’re probably not going 0-11 from here either.

We have an off week now courtesy of our backing out of the TCU game.

Instead we get New Mexico on the road for two years in a row, and we have to travel to San Marcos next year to play Texas State.

Who schedules two games in a row at New Mexico and agrees to a 1-1 with an FCS opponent?

Unreal.

How do we know Texas st is awful? They just played Tech pretty well and they won 4 games last year. Thats all we really know about them. I know they looked like they matched up well physically with us. There were some pretty big guys on their line. They had some speed……….all im saying is we ended up beating them by 40 points and that didnt seem to be enough. Im wondering what people thought was going to happen? What would people have liked the outcome to been? 100-0 with flawless football from freshmen? How can we assume how bad our record will be this year after that game, or that “Tubby was just feeding us hype all summer” b/c this team is gonna suck???
Here’s some scores of FBS opponents vs FCS opponents this weekend:
#17 ranked MICHIGAN ST 28 – Youngstown ST. 6
Penn ST 41 – Indiana st 7
Iowa 34 – Tenn Tech 7
#10 Nebraska 40 – Chattanooga 7
Oregon ST 28 – Sacramento st 29
North Carolina ST 43 – Liberty 21
Washington 30 – Eastern Washington 27
K-state 10 – East Kentucky 7
Arizona 41 – N Arizona 10
North Carolina 42 – James Madison 10
Those are 10 quality FBS programs that won by fewer points than we did vs their FCS opponent. As an outsider would you predict a 6-6 or losing season for all these teams based on how they played a crappy FCS school the 1st week of the season?

Im not a huge Tubberville backer but calling him out like that is kinda unfair.
Guess im just more hopeful from what I saw last night, than doubtful. Just dif perspectives.

Tech is ranked #51 in total defense!

Well, I mean, it’s a start …

Total offense is #17.

But only one game

Or at least that’s what I predicted someone would have said by now. It’s a start and I’m happy. If we finish there or near there that will be a success in my book.

People who think we will just show up and suddenly be the ‘85 Bears are just delusional. Just because the TSU guys are possibly smaller and possibly slower doesn’t mean they will give our guys the Ole! whenever the ball is snapped. We killed them by 40 points. Isn’t the goal of the game to score just one more than the other guys? Thought so.

I think everybody needs to try a different view/approach, if you'd like...

In a crazy scenario, let’s act like we didn’t get game film of TSU until halftime, made a game plan and some evaluations and went from there. I think it turned out to be a damn fantastic 2nd half. Adjustments were made and they played like a Top 10 team when assignments were figured out.

Film study is very much an important part of winning a game. Leach was huge on film study.

Our boys played their collective ass’ off when they got settled down.
