QB Debut Comparison

Don't know about everybody else, but I was pretty impressed with Doege last night. The OLine wasn't doing him any favors, but for a new starter I thought he made good decisions and he made some VERY nice throws. I thought I'd put together a little comparison to see how his debut stacked up against his predecessors.

Year -     Name      - class -  Opponent - Comp/Att (Comp. Pct.) - Yds -  Yards Per Attempt - TD/Int

2011 - Seth Doege - Jr. - Texas State -  23/33 (69%) - 326 yds - 9.9 YPA - 3/0

2009 - Taylor Potts - Jr. - North Dakota - 34/48 (71%) - 405 yds - 8.4 YPA - 2/3

2006 - Graham Harrell - So. - SMU - 34/49 (69%) - 342 yds - 7.0 YPA - 5/1

2005 - Cody Hodges - Sr. - Florida International - 29/37 (78%) - 454 yds - 12.3  YPA - 4/0

2004 - Sunny Cumbie - Sr. -  SMU - 40/66 (61%) - 470 yds - 7.1 YPA - 4/0

2003 - BJ Symons - Sr. - SMU - 23/38 (61%) - 297 yds - 7.8 YPA - 3/1

I don't have very vivid memories of any of these except Potts in '09. Didn't have much of a critical eye before then anyway. But what we saw from Potts in '09 was certainly a sign of things to come (i.e. throwing off his back foot, prone to interceptions, etc.). If what we saw from Doege was a sign of things to come, then I think he'll be just fine.

Just looking at the numbers on paper, I think you'd have to say Hodges had the most impressive debut - certainly the most efficient anyway. For a guy that went on to put up ridiculous numbers, Symons had a pretty pedestrian debut. I'm surprised Cumbie's arm didn't fall off after a 66 attempt debut.

I think Doege's numbers paint a pretty accurate picture of the game. Good accuracy, good decisions (no INT's) and big plays (thank you Darrin Moore). Although I do remember one near interception by a DL or LB near the line of scrimmage that was dropped. And I think some of the shots down the field to Moore could have been picked off by bigger, more athletic CBs, but I'm sure the game plan will be adjusted accordingly when we face better competition. Solid debut in my book.

Doege was a smooth operator. By the time A&M arrives, he will be humming, as will Moore, Stephens, Marquez and, hopefully, the o-line….;D

Doege seems smart...

He checked down to runs and had big success with that a couple of times. He throws a really nice deep ball, and Moore’s body control and adjustments to the ball were really special.

The near int was by a defensive end on a zone blitz play. Easy to understand why Doege didn’t see him.

Thanks for the stats,

was thinking that GH had a much worse debut, and forgot those ints Potts threw. Memory is really a bitch these days.

Doege is going to be as good as any we’ve seen here, as long as the line can keep him healthy. This is a serious concern right now

MOORE STATS

I just looked on ESPN to see how Doege ranked among QBs from the rest of the country and he came in at #9 with a QB rating of 182.7. Just ahead of him in the big 12 was Weeden at #2 Landry Jones at #3 Griffin III at #7. Doege was sacked twice which is more than the rest of those guys.

But…
even more impressive was Moore. If you look at his stats and compare them with all the receivers from the rest of the country he came in at number 1.
He had more yards than anyone in the country with 221. NICE.

Symons. I was at that SMU game and I remember Henderson and Mack having a good game rushing the ball too. I think we also had a pick 6.

Doege

Threw the ball with accuracy and moved in the pocket well. He will be fine.

I question the play calling of NB.

Did like the way he threw the ball down the field, but he won’t have that much time in the Big 12.

Was disappointed in the Oline, they almost got him killed twice.

Seth D looks like a keeper !!

Maybe some of you whe were at the game got a better view, but I did detect a moment in which he looked like deer in the head lights…he rushed a couple of plays that turned out well for us, could have been uglies.

I think he looks good and doubt that there is anyone on the roster who could do much if any better…much less match.

I'm like

in love with Doege already just because Potts was so awful. Potts put up decent stats and won some games for us, but you just never trusted the guy. Doege is quick and decisive with the ball and actually looks to go downfield. He seems to have that awareness level that is needed to be a winner at the QB position.

agreed

Doege played like how a Tech Qb should.

While I thought NB's play calling was predictable;

Doege improved with each offensive possession. By the middle of the second quarter, he was starting to move people around and take charge. By the third quarter, you could see his command.

When Stephens broke his 45 yard run, you could tell he changed the play. He went up and tapped left tackle on the behind, moved receives out wide, went back to the shot gun, handed the ball off to Stephens, and 45 yards later TD. It was cool to watch.

He also made two great throws that were dropped. One for a TD. Zoo let one get thru his hands, that does not happen too often.

QB position is rock solid.

Doege

Was solid, with some sharpening to do on screens and touch passes. Hope he uses his mobility to move in pocket and find open receiver instead of taking off everytime.
We are very solid with depth at skill positions….wow

He spanks the turf with authority.

Agree, he gained confidence as the game went. his senior year he will be playing at a Hodges/Harrell/Symmons/Kingsbury level.

maybe sooner than later

Look what happens when you bring kids along at the right speed.

Freshman year red shirt, sophomore year your number three, then junior year you battle for the top spot. Competition between one and two brings the cream to the top.

This year and next year its Doege and Karam, afterwards its Brewer and Scotty.

I like Doege’s mechanics. A lot. That will eliminate a lot of the inaccuracy we have had to get used to the last few years.

Yes Sir mechanics equals accuracy, accuracy equals efficiency..

I didn’t see the game but all the pictures I have found show Doege with sound mechanics.

All we need now are those quick outs, and getting ball in Stephens hands on the outside,

and away we go.

Hopefully?

One thing also, based on the press speak of the coaches I was looking for Daniels to explode out of the gates. Now he is suspended? Didn’t play anyway. With what we think Daniels can be and what Marquez and Moore showed us, I think this offense will explode as the season progresses. I just want know what happened to Daniels and what is going to happen.

I'm good

I thought Doege did a very good job, the majority of his passes were crisp and on target. Good decisions for the most part and decent check downs.

no happy feet.....

there may have been good reasons for it but “the player formerly know as Nick” seemed always have happy feet…Doege just seemed to stand in and throw off the correct foot(not the back as done by tpfkN). Also, he definitely brings a better option as he can actually scramble/run…..a few zone reads now and then will be nice….I also liked the return of the jail-break and I think TTU has several wr’s that can run it if the Mad Scientist Jr. will pull the trigger…..I would love to know how many times in the last 11 seasons has TTU scored 6 td’s in 6 possessions…..hasn’t happened since 2008 I know for sure….in Doege we trust!!! Free Scotty(now that Mackey’s hurt)!!! Wreck’Em Tech
