Red Raider Gridiron | Mackey Out a Few Weeks, Marquez Switched to Inside Receiver
PLEASE WELCOME RNDRCKTTU TO THE FRONT PAGE | Please welcome DTN user RndRckTTU to the front page, who will help DTN write about anything she wants, but she'll help me give the Lady Raiders more front page news. For the longest time, I've always said that I just don't have time for multiple sports, and I still believe that, but that doesn't mean that the Lady Raiders don't deserve front page consideration.
DTN MOVING SERVICE | I missed quite a conversation yesterday, as I didn't have to work, but I was helping my sister move for a good part of the day yesterday. I'll be opening the DTN moving service here shortly. I would just like to remind everyone, on the front page, that the few things that I do not allow are racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. comments and would ask that each of you think carefully about what you post and would also ask that you make it incredibly easy for me to moderate comments. I'd also add that the name-calling rule is still in effect. Please don't call people names and I'd also add that you please do not say, "that's a dumb comment" as that obviously doesn't call anyone a name, but is calling the comment dumb, or idiotic, or whatever. Please try to stay away from that. Saying that a comment is dumb is incredibly easy. Go after the comment on it's merit, or lack therof.
TEXAS TECH LINKS | The big news yesterday was that DE Leon Mackey suffered a deflated lung in Saturday's win against Texas St. LAJ's Don Williams has the news (it was also on Twitter yesterday) on the other injured players, who should be back by this week:
The injury updates were better for other Tech players who left Saturday’s game early. Safety Cody Davis took a knee to the head during the game, but Tuberville said he should be back this week. Running back Aaron Crawford (thigh bruise) and split end Tramain Swindall (knee) also could be back by the end of the week, he said.
Williams also mentions that freshman DE Branden Jackson could see some additional time, but look to DE Jackson Richards and DE Aundrey Barr to pick up most of the slack. LAJ's Williams also notes that Bradley Marquez will flip to inside receiver and Jacoby Franks from an inside receiver spot to wide receiver. Tuberville said that part of the rational was that Marquez will trigger single coverage on the outside:
Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said during preseason practice that putting Marquez in the slot would "take all our receivers to another level" because he would trigger single coverage for receivers on the outside. Also, IR Austin Zouzalik will flip-flop inside receiver positions, from H to Y.
Tuberville's five players of the week were as follows: WR Darrin Moore; DE Dartwan Bush; K Donnie Carona; Offensive Scout Team: Javares McRoy; and Defensive Scout Team: LB Dion Chidozie.
Offensive Coordinator Neal Brown said that he hopes to get TE Jace Amaro more time next week:
"Didn’t get to play Amaro as much as I wanted to this game," Brown said. "We’re working on some things this week to get him some more."
And Brown also talked a bit about why he didn't redshirt WR Marcus Kennard:
"If we can get someone on that (split end) side, whether it’s Swindall or Kennard," Brown said, "to make some plays down the field, then they’re not going to be able to double team Darrin. And also it’ll open up some of our running lanes for running backs."
The DT's Jose Rodriguez has their game story from Saturday's win and new writer, Evan Jansa, writes about Moore record-breaking day on Saturday.
CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT LINKS | I don't know that I know anything new today. I'd just add that UT spokesperson, Chip Brown, writes that the Longhorns could be looking at the ACC as they would get to keep their Longhorn Network, but Brown doesn't address whether or not the ACC would require equal revenue sharing, as the Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC all do this. SI's Andy Staples tweeted that ACC commish John Swofford said that UT to the ACC was news to him. Like last year, a lot of what Brown writes is what UT wants to be published. I do believe that the Longhorns do have an agenda, which is fine, and they feed that agenda through Brown. I'd love to see the ACC say the same thing that the other conferences are saying, which is that it's equal revenue sharing or nothing. Since the Big 12 is the only conference that seems to have this problem of members leaving, it would seemingly make sense that this was the root of the problem.

I’m no doctor but everything I read about a collapsed lung says it takes at least 6 weeks to recover. Yikes.

yeah, there's no real good news on that front other than he's fine for now
because if it was a spontaneous deflation that means its something he’s potentially prone to having recur going forward, and if it was trauma induced that means he’s got a fractured rib or, ahem, a bullet wound to contend with during his rehab (what little I know about collapsed lungs I learned in the army so I don’t know of much else that would cause them)
A big hit to the thorax
can cause one, though that is fairly rare. Once the lung reinflates, things are fine. It depends on how much air was leaking internally.
I would
like to donate lung air to help him….how do you check to see if you are a match?

A couple of comments
First, I do hope that Amaro gets 100% of the TE playing time. the little gay fellow that wears #82 needs to never ever ever see the field of play again. He was booed in my section saturday by the way.
Second, due to my monitor going out, I missed yesterday’s “conversation”. …………probably a good thing I did.
Third, immediately after the game, I was not too impressed, however, after reflecting on it, I gotta say we looked pretty good after adjusting to what we were seeing, both on the offense and the defense. I’m very impressed with Moore.
Finally, what happened to the use of the south scoreboard to list who made the tackle and who ran the ball, and posting of of stats and other scores…………now only used for weather and ads.
PS…………..no way there was close to 50K in the stands saturday…just saying
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
10-4 on Amaro
Nancy James just needs to get a 12 week hamstring pull.
I guess NB has seen enough. Nancy went over the middle and actually ducked and the pass went over his head.
That is when Amaro entered the game. Unfortunately, it was late in the third quarter. I guess Nancy remembers last years hit.

Swofford's reaction
is exactly what Chip Brown needs to happen. If people would start to categorically deny what he spouts, he might even lose credibility among Longhorn fans.
Then again, probably not. Most of them KNOW he’s just a mouthpiece for Dodds. Unfortunately, most of them also think that what Dodds says is gospel.
I got into a rather heated debate last week with a Longhorn co-worker. He made the mistake of asking “Who wouldn’t want Deloss Dodds as their athletic director?” I immediately said “Me and Texas Tech”. I then went on to explain that, yes, he probably does what he thinks is best for Texas athletics. However, since the man has such a difficult time telling the truth, he has no credibility outside of the Longhorn family. That didn’t go over well, and he made the mistake of asking for examples. I didn’t even have to move to incidents prior to 2011 before he walked off.

I am sure Chip put it out there as per Mr. Dodds about the ACC.
The Thornes are so desperate, they are hoping that Scott will panic and tell the Thornes that thye can keep their network. Hey Chip, and Dodds. Larry is way too smart for that. It may work in the weak Big 12-3-3, but not in the Wool Sweater League.
If the Big 12-3-3 is to stay together, I hope that everyne demands equal revenue sharing. It is time for both Texas and OU to share or its off to where ever the football gods want us to be. Same with Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Missour, and Tech.
Enough of this. OU and Texas have supressed us all for years. I am sure it will all work out. So, its time for the Super Seven to show our solidarity and tell Texas and OU to shove it.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
No conference can be stable with Mizwhorah in it.
Missouri catalyzed the demise of the Big XII because they wanted to ‘explore academic possibilities’ with the Big 10. No conference can be stable with Mizwhorah in it. When Big 10 did not work, they tried to pursue the SEC, and now they have tied up with KU to sell themselves as a package deal to the Pac as a ‘superior’ alternative to Texas Tech in the event that UT does not agree to join the Pac. So, we can forget about received solidarity from Mizhworah and KU. That leaves only Baylor, Iowa State and Kansas State.
by jef on Sep 6, 2011 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions
Agreed, however;
right now it one for all and all for one. I think once cooler heads prevail that it will all work out. The real bad guys in all of this is really OU, Texas, and ATM. These three are the ones that voted against un equal revenue sharing from the beginning.
Now that aTm has been left out in the cold, they want to take their ball and go play somewhere else. Funny how it was okay so long as they were getting the Lions share, but after ten years of taking a beating from Tech, their TV revenue is down, and they need to go somewhere where they can get equal revenue sharing to pay for their habit.
Same with OU, now that Texas is getting the Lions share, they want to go play somewhere else.
This is so amusing. DTN, we should write a book. Where is KWASH.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Unequal revenue sharing votes
I’m pretty sure that Kansas, K-State, Iowa State, etc. also voted for unequal revenue sharing. They all hitched their wagons to the Texas/A&M/OU train, because they thought that was the best option.
What are we going to do now, though?
About Realignment
Texas seriously miscalculated their weight as a brand. Outside of the Southwest Texas is not any bigger as a brand than Florida or Alabama is in the South; or Ohio State is in the North or USC is in the West. This whole positioning of Texas as the Notre Dame of the South was false. It may have made a lot of sense in the minds of Dan Beebe and Deloss Dodds but outside of the Lone Star State it did not carry much weight. Now ACC is might be listening to Texas because that conference does not have a powerhouse school like the Big 10 or SEC, or the Big XII or the Pac 12 for that matter but I doubt that academic heavyweights in the conference like UNC, Virginia, Duke, or Maryland will be willing to accept an unequal revenue distribution model that Texas proposes. But maybe for Texas and ESPN the bigger deal might be to sustain the LHN and the ACC deal might look appealing to them solely from that perspective eventhough it will be terrible for the University and its fanbase in the long run.
Being unemployed...

Don't Mess With Texas Football
Have you seen the latest from Baylor. It’s a plea to save football in Texas. All this realignment talk is going to kill football in our state, what you didn’t know. At least that’s their argument. And even more, it’s about Texas and our culture. Football is the end all be all of our culture and if the PAC16 and SEC take away the flagship schools then they are taking away Texas culture.
Really it reads, “Please don’t let TTU, ATM, UT go somewhere other than the Big12 or else we’ll be playing in CUSA and that ain’t good for us.” It’s a pretty pathetic plea to save Baylor from total irrelevancy.
yeah when I read it all i could see was
Baylor begging the other schools not to leave cuz it would mean they go backwards. It was like a guy begging his GF not to dump him.
Still they have a point.
I am all for the Wool Sweater league, and I hope that is where we end up. But having ATM in the $EC, I still love what Rice Did, look I can do it too, Tech and UT in the Pack Infinity League, sure does change the culture of Texas and maybe high school football.

That Baylor shouldn’t have lobbied their way into the Big XII to start with.

Baylor sort of lucked into the Big XII in the first place
if SMU hadn’t gotten nuked, and had TCU not hit rock-bottom in the early 90s, Baylor could have very easily been passed over as the Big XII’s token Texas private religious school. The world keeps turning, though, and TCU and (and to a lesser but still impressive extent) SMU are resurgent, and when RGIII’s eligibility expires the Baylor Bandwagon turns back into a pumpkin. It’s sad if you’re the type of person who doesn’t really mind the degree to which they’ve mortgaged their piety and holier-than-y’all attitude in the name of what little athletic success they’ve put together in recent years, but I’m not that guy. Bye, Baylor.
by mojavereject on Sep 6, 2011 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Agree that Baylor's real motive is saving their own skin
but the article does make some valid points.
Problem is, there’s no stopping the train at this point …
Make's what valid points?
Will Texans stand by and watch hundred-year-old rivalries be cast aside as the state’s largest universities align themselves with other states across the country?
Will Texans sit and watch as Texas’ flagship universities pledge their loyalties to other states?
Will Texans stand by as our most promising student athletes are lured out of Texas by new rivals?
Will Texans watch as our most precious resources—the great minds of the next generation—are exported to new conference institutions?
Maybe makes one valid point. One hundred-year-old rivalry will fall to the wayside, but that’s happening wether UT stays in the Big 12 or not, as long as A&M makes a break. (maybe two if UT decides not to play Baylor also).
What states are the universities pleding their loyalty to? Big 12 is a conference that covers multiple states, just like PAC16 and SEC. The only reason the Big12 seemed like a Texas State entity is because Beebe seemed like he was on the UT payroll.
And our students and athletes are just as likely to stay in the state or leave the state as they were before. Because we have different conference members playing each other doesn’t make “our” kids any more or less likely to stay or leave. As long as we have a good product in our schools they will stay.
Baylor is throwing out bunk arguments to save their own skin and it looks desperate.
I just though of this. Since Baylor is a private school, and therefore is private ownership and tries to sue TTU, UT, ATM would the Sovereign immunity clause protect us? Just a thought? It would be pretty funny if it did. Also I hate that Baylor is trying to stir the pot considering they wer bailed out by a past gov by getting into the big 12. Sure you beat TCU a few nights ago, and that might be your biggest win in 10 years.
I guess the same could be said for us and getting a big 12 invite.
Just sayin…

Difference is
we proved that we could compete in the Big 12 and Baylor didn’t. Baylor has gone 18-120 in conference games since it joined the Big 12. One of these is not like the others.

Actually...
If we go to the PAC, I’ll claim that “the great minds of the next generation” will start staying in the state more. The PAC will help us get to Tier I quicker than doing it in the Big XII. There is a lot of academic collaboration in the PAC.
Getting to Tier I quicker means we’ll provide better education to those “great minds”, and they’ll be more prone to stay in Texas. Right now, they’re more prone to LEAVE if they want a top-notch education.

Not true.
Conference realignment is not going to destroy Texas culture. Texas football is well rooted in the high school level. However, conference realignment will cause more young kids to attend schools in other regions of the country. But, conference realignment might also pull other talent our direction and open up markets from visitors. If Tech is alligned with the PAC that might speed up the progress in the area of academics and research and prestige. Baylor is just blowing hot air to keep the conference stable.

Fires everywhere....
The inclusion of Baylor in the Big12 is usual recognized as the result of Governor Ann Richards being a Baylor Alum. She was Gov until 1995 and still had tons of political clout when the Big 12 was established in 1996. Baylor should not have that power this time.
The Texas legislature is not in session until 2012 so it is doubtful they will interfere this time on the realignment.
Tech needs to be in a conference with equal revenue sharing. If the horns don’t want to play nice then they can go elsewhere or stay and support the remnants of the Big12.
Here is to a quick recovery for DE Leon Mackey. Hopefully it will not be a recurring injury.

OU weighs in again
and I didn’t expect them to say something like this.
“I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Stoops of continuing the rivalry if Oklahoma and Texas take up residence in separate conferences. “I know no one wants to hear that, but life changes and you’ve got to change with it, to whatever degree. If it works, great. I love the game, but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Sometimes that’s the way it goes.”We all heard UT posture/threaten (we’ll see if they follow though) A&M when it came to their November rivalry. But during all that saber rattling I think we all (at least I did) thought that they had always thought of A&M as their #2 game and OU was the more important one. Could you imagine Michigan not playing Ohio State? I think OU/UT is on par with that rivalry and it would be hard to break it apart over all this realignment crap. But I also think the best line of the article from OU comes at the end and should be remembered for everything we hear from the “sources.”
All of this could be posturing by Oklahoma who seem to be on a power play of their own.
I love this move by OU - Threatening Texas-OU hurts UT as much as ditching UT/Aggie is hurting A&M
Join us or we are done coming to the State Fair of Texas. That is one less decent game an independent UT will have on their schedule. It is so gratifying to see UT getting muscled by David Boren & Bob Stoops. Couldn’t have happened to a more arrogant bunch.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
Any thoughts we are in this with OU?
We can’t leverage UT like OU can. It is obivious OSU is in the side car with big bro. We are all willing to make the move. At least that is part of the equation, IMO, of us hiring Kirby and his ties to OU. The group knows it is best to keep $Texas feet to the fire and keep the gas pedal down on getting us to the Wool Sweater League (H/T BTECH). $Texas is getting desperate talking nonsense about the ACC, which means it is time to torque the lever and Stoops is the mouthpiece.

A better question is
when was the last time Ohio State/Michigan mattered? OU/UT has been a NC game killer for one of these teams.
This is a great read just pulled off RedRaiders.com
Apparently Pac 12 CEO’s do not want to expand. Isn’t it funny that USC does not want Oklahoma. Hell, who would. Who wants to add a school that has played in all those BCS championship games, even if they did not win them.
Also, great quote about how Texas will have to share equally with Texas Tech.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I think this is the PAC 12’s way of saying they aren’t breaking up the conference. Pretty much the same thing the S.E.C did when all the ATM talk went down. As for USC they might not sniff a NC shot for awhile with the penalties they are getting.

Stay away from the messages if you are thin skinned
Texas Tech is not getting much love from the Stanford & Cal fans. But since this is Rush Week & Tech hasn’t gotten their bid from the Pac 12 yet, I’m biting my tongue & letting all that ignorance & prejudice against dust bowl schools (their name, not mine) go unremarked. They’ll learn who we are once we are sharing a conference.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
heh
I actually like that, given that all the dustbowl detritus left for California and founded said state’s sizable and embarrassing white trash population
It's strange, in L.A. there is no difference in accent between the white trash & the well off
The only give away I could see was the crude language used by people on the lower rungs of the ladder. Unlike New York where you can almost guess somebody’s highest education level just by listening to his accent.

If you were on Orangebloods.com I think the word SHARING will get you banned.

Hello, mbrown....
I know you keep up on their blogs and I think you are a good ambassador. Too bad us bloggers don’t get to make the final decisions, but our voices must matter somewhere, somehow, esp. if we make phone calls, cancel cable subscriptions, quote facts to impt. p[people, and speak up for ourselves. But I also agree with you that this is hell week and at this point we little guys and girls have spoken. The big dogs are all in the pit fighting it out now. If the lawyers and legis. get involved, it all gets extended for weeks to years possibly.
Are you guys getting angry at Texas
As of right now your fates are kind of tied to Texas. If they shun the PAC then the chances of Tech getting the offer from them is fairly low. If they go indi it could make it tough for Tech to land somewhere promising.
I am confident that where ever we land, it will be okay.
God loves Texas Tech.
However, might not be so good for you. I think you better be kind to us, or we won’t share with you.

well im a PAC guy...
so i love where we are right now… it would just be nice to have some more join us
Hello, PAC-man.
Yes, most Red Raiders would like to be a member of the PAC-16. We have never had much love for UT but we would rather be in a good quality conference with them than in a poor-quality conf. without them. We think we bring some class and quality to any table, and we are trying hard to improve where we need it in academics. We are not funded well by our legis. that has two and two only “flagship” schools. But we would be good team mates for the PAC and being part of the PAC would make us better than what we are today. Always room for everyone to improve, but we are proud of who we are and what we have. IMHO

I was on FSN watching the Rangers
(LHN is the next channel up on the menu feature)And I shit you not, the LHN is showing today’s football practice and interviewing a position coach for “post practice” thoughts.

Looks like to me it is must See TV for BYU.
By game time our coahces should know exactly what to expect.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
it should also be great scouting for fans.
we’ll be able to make fun of all their inside mottos and other talk
Kazper.
We would love to join you. We are a little scrappy but fair. Our dislike of the school in Austin is visceral hate. We are not anyones little brother. We are West Texas and our resources ( West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil) funds that school in Austin. Do you know the difference between a porcupine and a car full of U.T grads, the porcupine has the pricks on the outside. Just a side note about TTU. Did you know that Tech has its own Law School, and Medical School. Tech has excellent graduate programs, over a hundred different degree programs and the hottest looking women in Texas. You would have great time on a road trip to Lubbock. Wreck Em.
I personally love me some WTI
and I’m sure Blackbeard does as well.
The funny thing is, Texas Tech is known for their development in the oil industry around here. Lots of technology has come from the Tech PE department and former alumni in the industry. The downfall is that the PUF and University Lands get the fruits of our labor. Lots of fruits.

Thats good to hear. My only worry is that if texas rejects the offer than the Pac would go else where.
I think If Texas rejects the offer then instead they look to OK, OK st, Missu, and KU. I could see it falling that way. And Texas just said tonight they have no plans of leaving hte LHN. If thats the truth (which I would be surprised if it was just lying since thats all that I’ve read out of their mouths), then that could be an issue.
Smart money says Texas gets last bid--not first
If Scott plays his cards right—and he will—Texas gets in last, not first. He goes to OU first, then OSU—both will jump. Scott and OU then go to Tech and Tech jumps. That puts UT odd man out—With this, OU-UT rivalry is gone, Tech-UT rivalry is gone, Texas is big boy in the pool but all the water is draining. Then Scott turns to Texas and says drop the LHN and you can come too. From an econ standpoint without those schools how marketable is the LHN? UT football may be independent, but their basketball, baseball, track and all women’s sports will become cost prohibitive. UT won’t have a choice—they have to come. And, to ram the point home, I can see Scott saying “And make it quick or I call BYU.” That’s how I see it.
One problem with that theory
if texas is sitll saying they want their network, and your scott. Do you take a tech team that you would only take in order to get UT without a gaurantee they texas will come? or do you instead go after missu and kansas and forget about the head aches which are Texas.
Offer will be contingent on $Texas for TTU, just like last year.
Because Texas & Tech constitute 2 of the largest TV markets (DFW & Houston) in the nation. KC & St Louis don’t delivery the punch as the state of Texas.

Of course you take it.
It leaves a massive footprint in Texas for the PAC16.

Put the lime in the coconut...... ...... I say "Doctor!" .... is there nuthin' I can take........
…. Dr. Cane, you are wise, Sir! The more this thing evolves, the more it becomes apparent that what you say is true. Lots of crazy voodoo ideas being thrown around because, lets face it – it’s a lot of fun – but when you put the pencil to paper……… Scott holds all the cards, and Scott knows how to play them. Should he do as you say, and I think he will, it’s all academic (so to speak). I sleep well tonight. If tomorrow I wake to find the Aggies have escaped…. a new day dawns and I would be incredibly surprised if the sun doesn’t set in the West for Tech.

Tech could be the linchpin that keeps OU/Xerox/Tech and Texas together…

Isn't it ironic,
that after all of these years, all of the money stolen from West Texas, all of the unequal revenue distribution, and the concerted effort to suppress the success of Texas Tech as an academic institution by UT, that the Big 10 won’t take them because they’re tied to us. I would love to think that this would change the attitude in Austin concerning our school and their past behavior, but I know it won’t.
"We've all asked ourselves, "What ZIT?", "Who ZIT", "Which ZIT?", or possibly, "What time ZIT?". Well folks, this ZIT!!"
Hell yes you do.
You take the other three and UT can say anything they want – they are after all still trying to scare folks off so that they can keep the network (and I would too at this stage) – in the end, they …… “ain’t got no place else to go!” (Officer & a Gent. and they will feel like Mayo-naise when they finally buckle.)

That was in response to Kazper’s response to the good Dr. above.
I make no apologize for the effects of good wine however.
