Turf

I'm sure people would like to see more green W's in the win-loss column before anything and rightfully so, but I just saw an Eastern Washington video that reminded me that they had red turf. I don't know if this was ever a topic of dicussion here before, but how cool would it be if we had colored turf?! Since EWU has their "Inferno", what if our turf was black?! Or just red, whichever. Either way, I think that would be a cool and unique thing to add to the Jones. I feel like there are a few schools in the college football landscape that can pull off doing cool things like this by not being so stiff on tradition just for the sake of it (Oregon, Boise, EWU, OK St.) and I think Texas Tech could join that club. Thoughts?

Turf

As cool as black would be it would be hell on the players including ours, but just imagine the team coming out of the tunnel with the smoke, Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” playing and the jumbo tron saying "Welcome to Hell’. Of course after this past season it would have double meaning. All black uniforms, again, we could use all the advantages we could get. All games would have to be night games to help with the heat at least at the beginning of the season. Oh, and get the dust storm we had against Texas State to show up again.

There would be problems

With heat absorption with black turf. Would probably get too hot.

how about white turf with red lines and black and red numbers.

Definitely definitely

I took that under consideration, but I think some conditioning throughout the year during practice and such would help, as well as other percautionary steps to stay cool and hydrated but if seasons to come is anything like this past season, we won’t see a day time home game until the last home game in November. Of course times will always be different year to year but these guys practice during the summer in TEXAS. As bad as the black turf would be in terms of heat absorption, I think a lot of other, particularly non-Texas teams would have it worse. Red would be cool too.

Yeah but..

red has been done. How about five yard increments of red/black/red/black like Nebraska does with the shades of green? Nevermind…. nausiating. If we wore all black uniforms with the red/black field it would be like a game of hide and seek for the other team. Now you see me now you don’t. Touchdown Red Raiders!!!

Black turf would not look good with white helmets

Red turf has been done and besides color matching would be a problem

How about planting dense wild flowers in both endzones?

Remove the artificial turf and plant clover.
Stripe the field with daisies.

by Tn Raider on Jan 11, 2012 6:56 AM CST reply actions

As you can see

Tech plays on green, no other color. I don’t care for any of those fields of color, other than green. What may be of more concern is the number of injuries this past year and whether or not they were related somehow to the turf Tech now has. Maybe going back to natural grass would be best. Or just a different artificial grass. But changing to another color is not even desirable.

that you have to have green….I’m all for adding more re/black to the field but I like the “traditional green” color….Wreck"Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Jan 11, 2012 9:22 AM CST reply actions

A few different sources claim that's a myth and that no such NCAA rule actually exists

Which would seem to be borne out by other schools adopting non-standard turf colors post-Boise State (EWU, New Haven and Central Arkansas are the only ones I’m aware of). The NFL otoh does have a rule against non-green turf, known colloquially as “The Boise Rule”.

by mojavereject on Jan 11, 2012 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

My understanding is that the rule came into affect after the EWU field installation...

and that those teams are grandfathered in, but no new ones allowed.

That said, I love the idea of colored turf. It did for Boise State what Nike uniforms did for Oregon and pirates did for Texas Tech.

I would like to see a real yellow line that moves, not just the TV one

As much as we pay for season tickets the least they could do is give us the same cool technology they have on the TV broadcast. Buy a couple of bright yellow pin spotlights & place one on each sideline on a rail track. Move it every time a team gets a new 1st down.

The Jones could have a combo Red/Black turf. Every ther 10 yards would be red or black. Imagine John Harris’ radio commentary…Stephen breaks free..he has an opening on the right side..oh he hurdles a defender and he’s off…the red..the black..the red..the black…TOUCHDOWN Red Raiders!!

Ok, reality..I like traditional green turf. I live in New Braunfels and a local school (Canyon High School) has all red turf…hard to watch a game from the stands.
