DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2012-01-11

ODDS AND ENDS | If you haven't read SB Nation's Spencer Hall's eulogy on the college football season, you should. It's really good.

Pretty cool story from SI.com's Thomas Lake, who tackles the legend that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. This is a long read, but it's very much worth it.

TRACK AND FIELD | Congrats to the ladies indoor track and field team and coach Wes Kittley for being named the #8 the preseason poll. If the question of what programs are doing it "right" at Texas Tech, this is one of them.

TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | Pretty cool, OF Barrett Barnes is ranked as the #19 player in the country by College Baseball Daily. This is a big year for the baseball program, I think a lot of us have high hopes for the team.

LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL |

TEXAS TECH VS. OKLAHOMA | January 11, 2012 @ 7:00 pm | Norman, OK

The official site has a preview as the #10 Lady Raiders travel to Norma to take on the Sooners. LAJ's David Just writes that they do not want all the games to be close and would love a blowout win, but head coach Kristy Curry knows that this isn't easy in the Big 12:

"It’s hard to do that in this league," Curry said. "You don’t see very many 20-point wins. It’s a grind-it-out kind of league where each and every night is going to be difficult. The parity in this league is too good."

And F Jordan Barncastle says that the close wins says something about this team:

"We don’t fold," she said. "I think that we care much more than previous teams that I’ve been a part of. It shows on the floor. When we get down by 10 points in the second half, instead of making that margin 15 to 20 and end up losing by 25, we end up winning by 10. That says a lot about how competitive we are."

RED RAIDER BASKETBALL |

KANSAS VS. TEXAS TECH | January 11, 2012 @ 8:00 pm | Lubbock, TX

Rock Chalk Talk has a good preview of tonight's game and Big 12 Hoops ranks the Big 12, with Texas Tech still bringing up the rear. LAJ's Nick Kosmider writes about the close relationship between Texas Tech head coach Billy Gillispie and Kansas head coach Bill Self and Self has this to say about Gillispie:

"It’s great to have Billy back coaching in the league," Self said this week. "I don’t like playing friends, but certainly I think it’s great that he’s back, and I think he’ll definitely bring attention and quality to our league, without doubt. I’m real happy for him."

And Gillispie on Self:

"He’s like a brother to me," Gillispie said of Self. "I love Coach. I love he and his family and everything he stands for. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have ever had any opportunities at all. I’ll be forever grateful to him."

I've told this many times before, but I was in law school at Tulsa when Self was the head coach and Gillispie was an assistant and the run they took Tulsa on while Self was the coach there was pretty amazing. We all knew that Self was a special coach and he wasn't going to be long for Tulsa.

The official site has a profile of PG Javarez Willis:

But as much as coach Gillispie has inspired him to be the best player he can be, he has also inspired him to do something else.

"I want to graduate. Honestly, coach has changed me," said Willis. "I still slip up, but coach has showed me how to be so positive mentally when it comes to my education and my basketball. The way we practice, it makes me feel like I can defeat anything. If you can practice at the level coach wants you to, then you can defeat anything. It is all mental. It carries over to life. People say that effort in the classroom carries over to the court, but in some instances, I feel like the effort we give on the court has carried over into the classroom.

"It makes such a difference when you have someone that believes in you - someone who constantly cares. Not every conversation has been good. When I mess up, I deserve what I get, because in the end I know that he believes in me."

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | I know that it seems like forever, perhaps in coaching-time, but Texas Tech has made it official in naming Art Kaufman as the defensive coordinator for Texas Tech. The official site has your release and this is the quote from head coach Tommy Tuberville:

"I looked at a lot of candidates for this job but when it came down to it, I turned to a guy that I knew could get the job done," said Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tuberville. "Art is one of the best defensive coaches in the business and that is obvious when you take a look at the product he has put out on the field over the years. He has experience in the SEC, ACC and Conference USA and I know he will soon make his mark here in the Big 12. We are excited to have him on our staff and can't wait to get to spring practice."

This is something that I've been thinking about, and when Glasgow was terminated/resigned, I thought that new secondary coach John Lovett, would be a great candidate as a defensive coordinator because Lovett actually has more experience as a defensive coordinator, and maybe a better resume, than Kaufman. Tuberville commented after the official parting of ways with Texas Tech and said that when he made his assistant coach hires, Tuberville wanted to keep Glasgow as the defensive coordinator and I questioned at the time how accurate that statement actually was. Now, I think that Tuberville was telling the truth in that I do think that Tuberville wanted to hire his guys (Price and Lovett) to help the defense and try to surround Glasgow with some folks with experience. Glasgow then parts ways with Texas Tech and then Tuberville ends up hiring Kaufman, who again, maybe doesn't have the resume that Lovett has.

Just something to think about. Either way, Tuberville has done a 180 on coaches that have experience vs. coaches that can recruit. Kaufman has been coaching for 28 years, Lovett has 20 years of college coaching experience and defensive line coach Terry Price has 17 college coaching experience. That's 65 combined years. Compare to 14 years for Glasgow, 12 for Sam McElroy, and 1 for Otis Mounds. That's 27 combined years. And I also think that Tuberville realizes that he can just ask Prunty to essentially be a full-time recruiter. Heck, right now, Prunty has 9 guys that he's recruited that have either committed or signed, which is close to half of the class.

When I first read the comment from TTU that there was effort to retain Glasgow I believed it to some degree.

Part of that was due to my propensity to rarely take a one-of as a fact, I like verification. Parf of it made sense to me given that he was hired away from a staff that he clearly was embedded in, that he had made some risk in coming to TTU and that was being honored by our staff—to minimize impact on his career…that still makes sense to me, I think it fits.

I am not sure that the time taken to make the hire and announcement is really all that long, it is a complicated exercise to locate, do due dilligence, negotiate and hire a guy, especially if he is currently working in a program. I see a lot of comments saying it is all on the hiring party, the hiree has a lot to do with that as he mulls through the offer with his mentors, family, and self.

It is interesting that the ‘experimenting’ with scheme has come full circle. I have a thought that that is part of the consequence of who has been hired in each case. We got a guy who wanted to run 3-4 and that happened, we got a guy who wanted to run 4-2, and that happened, this time it looks as if we went after a guy who is a 4-3 guy—I am waiting to see what the announcement or what the practices show we are running before I commit to myself that we will see 4-3.

The evolution of the staff is also interesting in that it looks like in some cases it is an effort to improve, in other cases it is kind of normal attrition, indeed there were possibilities that there could have been more turn over than has occured. I hope the HC is keeping his eye peeled for a next OC, we are not going to be able to keep Brown for many more years even if that is what we want to do.

Welcomes to Coach Kaufman !

We get to read another good reason to believe that we have a very good HC for men’s bb. He is from a strong coaching tree, Coach Self is first rate.

I am going to miss the bb games tonight, I will have my guns up anyway !! Go Teams !!

Plus, I think with any hiring within a state agency, the job has to be posted for 10 days and I think from the time that TTU and Glasgow parted ways, it has been 12 days (I think).

Indeed. BCG will not only improve Tech bb, but make the B12-2 take notice.

New Hires

I tend to think this will help defensively to some degree. The coaching on that side of the ball was horrible and hopefully these new coaches combined can develop a formula for success. It’s going to take a lot to win over the fan base for this coming season but I am impressed with the coaching experience coming in although not convinced it’s enough to win. I think the beginning of the season against non-conference teams will give us a good indicator of any possible improvements. The Spring game won’t tell us anything IMO as I usually don’t put much stock in it. It’s a make or break season so hopefully that kind of pressure on these coaches equates to wins.
Looking forward to the 2012 schedule to see if get UT and OU at home. Also, like the fact WVU is possibly coming to Lubbock.

Only One Way to Go

Tech had the worst (120) rushing defense, number 114 in total defense, and 117 in scoring defense last year. Literally, it can’t get any worse.

The new guy coming in could look like a hero if the 2012 defense improves to somewhere in the middle of the pack – 70-80 in total defense.

An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.

It's sad....

That our expectations have become so low. Now it would be GREAT if our defense was ranked 75th in the country!

Optimism

The basketball team only has 1 way to go and I am full of excitement. How come I don’t get that same feeling about next year..

If you have to think about it?

Doesn’t that tell us something? We don’t get the same feeling of optimism because we don’t feel, hear, or see the same kind of leadership. Maybe that will change with this new staff that Tubs has hired. But we all are looking through eyes that have been “jaundiced”.

I agree in principle, but

Many voiced similar thoughts after 2010’s lackluster defensive performance and it didn’t exactly work out. Surely you have to be right, but comments of this nature do make me nervous.

by rednblackET on Jan 11, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Since we had the worst

rushing defense in the country, then literally, we can’t get any worse. You are right, there were a lot of comments last year that said the same thing….how can it get any worse?

But it did, because we still had not seen the “bottom”. Well, in 2011, Tech was officially the worst run defense in the country. We all talked about how bad the run defense was after the Texas State game. But we refused to believe it was that bad. Surely it would get better. So here we are, talking about it again. But this time, when we say “it can’t get any worse”, it is factual.

An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.

We could still be 120 and still get worse.

A la the Detroit Lions of 0-16 fame. We could set the bar, if you will. Problem is, we don’t get high draft picks as a prize. There’s no parity in college sports. The rich get richer and the people like us spiral into inconsequential entities.

He had a decent defense at NC, and with the other new additions to the staff I would think they would be able to game plan for an offense.

When the South Plains Drifter came.....

to TTU he had been out of a HC job for a year and most of “his boys” had already taken other jobs so rather than going with experience he went with potential…..well it seems potentional on the D blew up in his face and some of his experienced crew is now available…..I intially liked the hire of The Jeep and The Scot but right now TTU needs coaches who really have some real experience not just around experience….Prunty is getting the talent now these new guys need to “coach these guys up”!!!!! Since the the Copy Cat U win in 2008 it has been a real difficult time for TTU football and my only real wish is that Red Raider football will come back to the prominance it needs to be and that is only done by winning!!!!! So here’s to TTU football being back into the Top 20 of College football next(some how!)…..I’m not a fan of a coach(eventhough I like some better than others) but a Red Raider Fan since 1960!!!!! Can anyone explain the timeline?

I have been reading his bio and it seems like he went up to DC at a big SEC school, down to a position coach of smaller school, to a position coach of and ACC school, was promoted to interim DC for that ACC school, then was given the DC job here. Does anyone know why there was that dip? Any insight would be great.

Pretty good summary at the right of this page as to where he was and how long he was there:

Can’t answer your question as to why he went from Ole Miss to Arkansas Tech other than he is from Arkansas, maybe he needed to be close to home.

you never know what goes through a man's mind when he moves like that

a lot of people bash Chris Peterson for not leaving Boise, but its where he wants to be, I think that is how you have to explain Kaufman’s moves. He goes where he wants to be and doesn’t follow the trend. I have more respect for people like that, than those who follow the crowd.

Not really. Wade was fired from Buffalo and Denver if I remember correctly. Don’t get me wrong, Jones is a big reason why the Cowboys are down and his inability to draft talented players seems to be the biggest reason.

As a season ticket holder during the Jimmy years I still carry a bitter grudge against Jones for firing him

And I never thought he would still be running the show at this late stage almost 20 years later. Doesn’t anybody retire in their 60’s anymore? As soon as I’m 59 1/2 the American workforce will have seen the last of me.

I’ve never been a season ticket holder of anything, but I agree. The one constant through the downfall of the Cowboys seems to be Jones. Coaches, players, etc., change, but yea, it’s not good for Cowboys fans.

I don’t want to steal too much from the ticket … but on the morning show they said lets be clear …. Jones’s body hits the dirt … Stephen will hire a GM ..

I do see something similarity in the New Coaching Staff @ Tech and the Cowboys Staff …. biggest is that now on both Staffs your position coaches have been or are ready for there own head coaching gigs .. also the postition titles like offensive line coach really mean nothing … coach is a coach OL line coach may work with Defense or Call plays etc…. both teams are purging coaches that are sensitive about titles and fiefdoms

Mbrown, I tried to retire at 59 but somehow got caught back up in the system, at least half-way. Oh well, the extra cash buys my new toys.

And don’t get me started on Mr. Ego. There is an entire generation of fans now who have never seen the Cowboys win anything but one playoff game. The best we can hope for is some kind of tragic medical disaster during his next facelift.

It appears Kaufman didn’t follow Tuberville to Auburn cause he was looking for the head coaching gig @ Southwestern Louisiana …. it appears him staying on @ Ole Miss was fallback after not getting the job. Position coaches were still eating beans and rice in the late 90’s I am sure he took the jobs where he could get some money…..

I hope this job is not just a payback for Tubs not hiring him in Auburn …..
