GAME RECAP
MVP
Javarez Willis | This is the sort of game when you just give it to the only guy that scored in double-figures, which was Willis. Not many good performances.Numbers
19 to 6 | KU had 19 second chance points compared to 6 for Texas Tech.16 | This was the rebounding margin. KU had 40 rebounds, 12 offensive, compared to 24 to TTU. 1 of 11 | Texas Tech had 1 3-point basket, Luke Adams, late in the game. |
THE RESULT | BLOWOUT | This was ugly. Pretty much no two ways around this. The game got out of hand early and the refs seemed to be on edge the entire night, ready to call a technical foul or give Billy Gillispie a bench warning for being animated? I'm not sure, the game was completely uneasy after about halfway through the first half. Then things really spiraled as Gillispie was T'd, then SF Terran Petteway was ejected from the game after already being T'd himself. I keep saying this, but it's true, this team is pretty darned awful offensively, shooting 30% from the field for the game and as mentioned to the right, couldn't hit a three-point shot until late in the game. This team can't stretch the defense because they can't make shots from the outside on a consistent basis.
And now I think this team is really starting to miss SG Toddrick Gotcher and what he brought to the team. I'd have to think that if Gotcher was not injured, he's be starting instead of Nurse and at the very least, Gotcher would be giving the team a more varried offensive game (i.e. more than the set-shot that we see from Nurse), a more athletic player and better defender. Hope he gets well soon.
BACKCOURT
Jararez Willis | The only player that did much of anything, hitting three layups early off of a high screen and roll with Lew, but Willis had 12 points, but contributed in no other way with only 2 rebounds, 0 assists and 0 turnovers.
Ty Nurse | Almost completely absent from the boxscore. Didn't score any points, had only 2 assists and 1 turnover in 32 minutes. I think that Nurse is the least athletic 2-guard in the Big 12. TTU has to have more from Nurse, but Nurse's biggest problem is that he's awful at creating shots on his own and his only shot is a set-shot from the three-point line. .
DeShon Minnis | Minnis was fine and did what I expected, took the ball to the basket and got to the line, but he's just limited offensively to really do very much.
Kevin Wagner | Minimal minutes.
Luke Adams | Minimal minutes.
FRONTCOURT
Jordan Tolbert | Is starting to fade with conference play. Really struggled when KU's 7-0 center guarded Tolbert and Tolbert had a tough time getting open almost the entire night.
Robert Lewandowski | Lew needs to stop trying to be so cute with the basketball. He had 5 turnovers again, seeming just throwing the ball away when he's playing in the high post. Lew will see something, think it's a good idea, try to pass the ball and the defender is a step ahead. it's getting frustrating.
Jaye Crockett | Shot a ton last night, but he was the only one that seemingly wanted to take a shot other than Willis. Crockett still only made 2 of 12 shots and was close to double-figures with 9 points.
Terran Petteway | Petteway has to know better. He is the son of a coach, and when he was ejected from the floor, the Kansas player swung an elbow and then pulled on his shirt. Doesn't matter. Frustrated or not, he can't react the way that he did. This team is already short-handed and can't afford to lose players for being reactionary in a situation like that.
Jaron Nash | Nash contributes when he's in the game, but he is still a last resort for Gillispie. Something doesn't equate here and I'm not sure what it is. Nash can't shoot free throws, but he's a high energy player that makes things happen and I'm not sure why he doesn't get some of Petteway's minutes. Nash isn't perfect, he's often out of control, but he can play.

Worst game of the season...
Good teams with good coaching have figured us out, our guards aren’t good offensively so stack the defense down low. Dare our guards to shoot the 3, and not establish the high low game by denying the pass down to the post. It completely shut us down. Tolbert still has talent, KU double teamed him every time he touched the ball, and our other players stood around to watch instead of cutting to the basket to mitigate the double team. We’ve been figured out, now it’s time for our coaching to make some offensive changes.

Here we go
Team basketball got dumped on big time by the local morning show sports people, whoever they are.
I had to be up early today and they were attacking what happened last night -with the tone that the local media usually uses to attack Mike Leach. It sounded like I was listening to 104.3 but it was actually 1340. You remember that tone? Well they have brought it back here.
They made it sound like the team did some really nasty things and people need to be cut/fired.
I didn’t fully grasp the conversation because I had my hands full with something important that I had to get up early for, but I still can’t get over the tone of it. The writing is on the wall for somebody.
I don't even know who it is
because I don’t normally listen to 1340 in the mornings and it was on while I was busy with something important so I couldn’t turn it up and figure it out. Sounded like one of your new-wave sports hosts that lives in a perfect, serene world that just got his boat rocked by the ugliness of life- kind of guys. I figured they would have a syndicated show on, but I guess not. Very soft voice, very utopian approach, no idea who the guy is. I guess you could look him up on their website to see who’s who.
Basically the message I got was that BCG had allowed things to fly out of control and one player should be fed to the lions, and/or maybe BCG himself. Again, it was the tone, because I could barely hear the words and my attention was focused elsewhere.
Not really sure what went on. Had a big morning and have to get a nap in before a busy afternoon. Already worn out and in no shape for the legwork on this.
Apparently KU has grown tired
of our recent dominance in Lubbock. And they decided to do something about it. Really no silver lining on this one. First game I can remember the team just losing their desire to play. Welcome to the B12 gentlemen; don’t forget what this feels like, but move on and get ready for the next one.
I’ve been encouraged that we were still in the first two B12 games late, but honestly, I expected 2 or 3 blowouts in conference play (though maybe not at home). DanSwany is correct that our weaknesses have been exposed – better competition has a way of doing that. Now we get to find out how resilient this team is.
Desperately need Lew to step it up
He has to get back to a level of consistent production and contribution. He has the one thing that the others need – experience – and must start using it to his/the team’s advantage.
the good news is that we don't hear BCG bitching
about being left no talent. he is just working his ass off to make some talent
We ought to Haboob his ass
This is part of the thing that I don’t like, which is that if all of the players that have committed to BCG end up coming to TTU, then 2 players on the team will be cut. That makes me uncomfortable.

Seth… basketball is different than football, in basketball a player can be cut from a team at any point. It’s not that personal, if you’re not performing and a better product comes through then you are gone. In football you have so many backups its not a big deal, but basketball you should only have one backup to your position. BCG knows what he’s doing and the players that don’t mind paying their own way have passion for the game, and love playing for Tech because they have the opportunity. BCG just wants everyone on the team to know that if they don’t perform they can be replaced by a kid that is willing to pay their own on the team, and that instills a lot of competitive play in practice.

That’s not true. Any athlete in any sport can be cut at any time, or any sport. All scholarships are 1 year contracts and are at the school’s discretion to be renewed.
What makes me sad would be, for example, Kader Tapsoba, was released after this year. Tapsoba is an excellent student, I think he had a 4.0 at TJC and I think I remember him saying something about how he was going to go back home at Burkina Faso, a small country in Africa, to help there (both of his parents are deceased so he might also help his siblings with a degree). His education was the most important thing and he may have chosen Texas Tech in order to accomplish that goal, or with the thought that he would be able to obtain his degree at Texas Tech. If this happened, I’d be upset.

Also, would be nice to have a guard who could drive, draw and dish
One thing I miss about RMK and his motion offense – he was able to get a fair amount of production with just cuts and layups.
I think it’s all going to be a high-low based offense. You won’t see those cuts like with RMK.

Oh, I completely agree
I just thought the motion was a thing of beauty when run correctly and it didn’t necessarily require strong 3-pt. shooting to open up the inside.
