Lead attorney for Leach lawsuit asks judge to remove him from case
The most interesting part of this article is the implication that Coach Leach may have reached out to the BOR about a potential settlement.

Liggett also confirmed that Leach, who was hired as Washington State’s head football coach on Nov. 30 , had sent to Texas Tech’s board of directors a letter requesting a resolution of the issue.
That surprises me. This might just be a case of wanting eliminate any further drama now that coach has a new job. I’ll bet Tech writes a check for an undisclosed amount eventually so this can go away.

“It has finally dawned on them (Leach’s legal team) that they don’t have a lawsuit,” a highly placed Texas Tech official told the American-Statesman.

It seems that they have the insight and forethought of a 2 year old.

This is the part that kills me
Kinda makes you wonder if they sit in a room brainstorming key messages asking themselves, “what can we say that will further divide our already divided fan base”…
Would a good old fashioned, “no comment” kill them?

It just amazes me...
These people don’t have the minimal intelligence required to keep their mouths shut. It’s one thing that they totally screwed Leach and hide behind a stupid law, but they always have to get in one more unprofessional immature verbal jab. It just disgusts me that these are the kind of people running the school. Therefore money stays in my pocket.

Tired of seeing things about Leach/Tech related
Leach is long gone, get this thing settled. We need to move forward as does he
Solution simple - Honor the contract Tech signed
It’s usually a lot less complicated to do the right thing in the 1st place.

Just so nobody interprets my comments below incorrectly I'm hoping Leach wins the lawsuit
However, this doesn’t bode well for Leach in my opinion. What reason(s) would this attorney have to do this so far along? My only reaction is the writing is on the wall and that prompted Leach to send a letter to the BOR hoping it would stick because he and his legal team know he’s going to lose. I think it sucks and it’s yet another black eye on our university but that’s my .02.
Have good and get give
My understanding is that a ruling was already made that there would be no monetary compensation from the state even if he wins.
And that if Leach pursued the Tech law suits, it was simply a name clearing exercise. If that is the case, I can see why these lawsuits are becoming less important. a) He was hired by a BCS school which has an effect of clearing his name at least somewhat, and b) he has to pay lawyers knowing he’s not getting that money back. Lawyers at that level aren’t cheap and the dollars must be adding up and then c) if the lawsuits against James and ESPN go through he has an opportunity to get everything on the table anyway.

I remember an interview
with Coach Leach saying that if the Supreme Court of Texas didn’t over-rule the compensation part, he would roll Tech’s suit into the ones with ESPN/James like Dunka said. In our opinion, Coach Leach winning in the Supreme Court of Texas would be justice in this case. At the very least, he and his family are happily settled in at WSU and have most of the College football world’s support. To us, it’s still about what’s right vs what’s wrong, and that simple.
Sovereign Immunity
Even with sovereign immunity, Tech would still have to pay his attorneys fees and court costs which are likely to be enormous. If we are lucky and Leach agrees to it, there will be a confidential settlement.
The real money for Leach will come from ESPN, Craig James, and Spaeth Communications.
That being said, I would count it as a true blessing if everything having to do with Tech will go away as soon as possible (though Tech’s payment would be subject to public disclosure through the Texas Open Records Act).

"Journalism" standards
are such that just throwing in a “reportedly” “allegedly” or “accused of” clears a broadcaster from liability because they are not making the claim, they are only “reporting”
and with the lack of standards in the “news” media, (really, consider your personal politics and think of what the opposing side says) I find it really difficult that a sports media story will set some new benchmark for journalism

Ha, ha!!
Bet that one was in the first draft!

It could have been a clause in the WSU contract
that prompted him t make this move as a last resort. Maybe the University will pay him a ‘negotiated’ amount.
maybe thats what the guy at the UMC was doing,
alledgedly
gathering up the cash to pay the Captain.
We ought to Haboob his ass
Or
Maybe since ML has bigger fish to fry (like actual coaching and restoring his name on the field) he really isnt concerned about the past. So we should all root for him to be successful otherwise it will be Texas Tech’s fault forever

It will be Texas Tech's fault forever until they do the right thing and honor the contract they signed
A liar & a cheat is no less a liar and a cheat because their victim is more or less sympathetic. This is about Texas Tech restoring its honor. It’s bigger than the old coach.

Someday
When we are all very old and can hardly walk into the Jones…… and we are four or five coaches past tuBS……….it will be ML day in Lubbock and their will be a parade and all will be forgiven,
they will project that catch in the north east corner of the field via hologram where we won 1/3 of 1/2 of the division and ended the season with two bad losses. NFL HOF member Wes Welker will be there, Retired ATM head coach Kliff Kingsbury will be there, retired GB Packers QB Graham Harrell will be there, ML will ride out in a chariot to cheers of all the Lubbock faithful that remember those few seasons of near greatness, where we almost sort of kinda won something, well we were ranked in the top five for a few weeks
or we will eventually get this HC thing right, hire the right guy and actually win something !

And take turns peeing on Kent Hance’s grave.

Still....

What was all over the news yesterday that may have inspired the original post?
Hance is very much alive as we talk this out & can defend himself if he cares what I think (but he doesn’t care what any of you think).
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
I thought it was harsh too westtxscrub
but after being around here long enough I felt pretty sure it was just a very smart aleck, albeit disrespectful, comment.
The comments distasteful to me I scroll through quickly & the ones that stop me in my tracks I’ll cry foul on.
Not that that’s ever happened…

Agreed
Sometimes people just drag things out as a matter of pride. Tech would do well to do the honorable thing and just pay him the 800k and one year’s salary.

I'll bet you're on the right track...
… whether it’s a clause in Coach’s contract or just an “expectation” when he was hired. WSU may have encouraged him in some form or fashion to make the lawsuits against Tech and maybe even ESPN go away quietly. It would be understandable from WSU’s perspective, but distressing for those of us who’d like to see Coach have his day in court.
Want some advice from an old pro? Walk in, plant your feet, look the other person in the eye, and tell the truth. James Cagney
Technically...
.. it will be Hance & Co.‘s fault forever regardless no matter what the outcome. That is an unshakable part of their legacy (think James & SMU) that no amount of supposed good deeds will erase. Tech, on the other hand, gets a black eye but has a much easier path to restoring that part of it’s reputation than will the individuals who created this mess. Still, the right thing should be done in any case.

so you think when they meet their maker it will still technically be their fault and reckoning will be handed down as they say

I'm not qualified to judge what happens at that point my friend. (but between you and me - yes, I tend to think so....)
I just feign to know what will happen in this life. In my crazy world view, building a chapel and naming it after yourself doesn’t improve my opinion of what you were doing concurrently to screw another person over. The hypocrisy of that, however certainly stands to worsen that opinion. Now, doing the right thing does have a way of effecting my opinion. So I guess I’d have to say that they could begin to rewrite a part of their legacies by coming clean and paying at least those amounts contractually owed. I guess my previous post was just a reflection of my likelihood of that ever happening.
