Interesting article about Mickey Marotti and Bennie Wylie being two of the most important football coaches in America. They are hires made within the last year at Ohio State and the University of Texas, and they are already altering the future of both programs dramatically, in more ways than you could possibly imagine - Extra Strength.

Was a big issue between Mach and Will. Will thought they were too soft, and was quite vocal about it. Then Mack takes his advice after Muschamp goes to Florida

I know that this isn’t popular, but remember that Tuberville initially retained Wylie, Wylie was even at the initial press conference introducing Tuberville, and everyone else that was aligned themselves with Leach were gone. Except for Wylie. I don’t know what happened, but reading between the lines I think that Tuberville wanted to keep Wylie, but was told that he couldn’t. Lots of things to throw Tuberville under the bus for, but I don’t think this is one of them.

Wasn’t the story that Wylie would be retained for 6 months in somewhat of a probationary status. That’s pretty much like telling him to get out.

Is it? Or is it Tuberville wanting to retain a guy that the admin didn’t want him to keep and the 6 month probationary period was the way to do it.

I would have to look it up but I believe that Tub philosphy is different that Bennie's ...

I seem to remember Tubs being shocked the types of conditioning drills and the weight room. I think they replaced all the equipment in the weight room because Tubs wanted more lower body strength and they didn’t have the equipment to do that. Also, he didn’t see much use for the sand pit so he filled it in. This may have had more to do than a directive.

As I have been some research between injuries and conditioning, I am finding some correlation that might explain why Tech has had so many injuries over the past two years.

by Arizona Raider on Jan 12, 2012 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Let's try this again ...

A difference in philosophy may have had more to do with Bennie’s departure than a directive from above.

by Arizona Raider on Jan 12, 2012 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t remember him being “shocked”. I don’t remember any article placing some sort of tone or adjective to what he thought of the prior system. I just remember him wanting to re-arrange the weight room.

by Seth C on Jan 12, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

OK, shocked is my word and may be a bit strong ...

The point that I was trying to make is that Tubs really disagreed with the former HC’s philosophy on strength and conditioning. He just didn’t believe a team could win with the former approach so replaced everything. I think he raised like a $1.25M to replace nearly everything in the weight room and upgrade some other football related stuff. Here is one of the articles I found:

Tuberville knew right away he wanted a different type of weight training than what former strength coach Bennie Wylie presided over, and that would require new equipment. Under the previous staff, Tech liked to publicize how offensive linemen such as Manny Ramirez and Rylan Reed set school records in the bench press.

Tuberville is fine with upper-body strength, but he believes the best football teams win with lower-body explosiveness and speed.

“The thing all recruits look at when they go to a campus is your weight room,‘’ he said, "because that’s where they feel like they can make themselves better. I thought our weight room was adequate as it was, but it wasn’t the type of weight room that I believe in that builds strength and speed. That’s with free weights. We had a lot of machines. We have all new power racks that our players will be using starting this Friday.’’

New strength coach Joe Walker said, "Basically, the (players’) physical development from the lower half down is going to be a lot more utilized with this weight room compared to the past weight room. … We’ve got a lot more hamstring, lower back, glut development exercises for muscles that propel you forward as well as vertically, too, to jump.’’

by Arizona Raider on Jan 12, 2012 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

You're right, Arizona Raider

Tubs disrespected Bennie Wylie’s system. I noticed inaccuracies in the article you cited above when it appeared in 2010. Don Williams wrote “..Tech liked to publicize how offensive linemen such as Manny Ramirez and Rylan Reed set school records in the bench press.” Truth is, they publicized just as much the fact that Louis Vasquez set the school record in the squat. Another truth is, Rylan Reed totally manhandled Brian Orakpo. Bottom line: Bennie Wylie is the best in the business and Tubs let him go. Whether it originated from Hance or Tubs, this regime totally disrespected everything about the winningest coach in Tech’s history.

This isn’t Tuberville disrespecting anyone this is just the personification of what Tuberville does. Everything is always the greatest thing. From the 3-4 to the 4-2-5 to the 4-3 to the weight room. I see your point

But I think that letting Bennie get away was one of Tuberville’s biggest mistakes. IMO, Wylie had a lot to do with Leach’s success as the players were in better shape than most of their opponents and could wear them out—and we didn’t have so many injuries. Since he left, I don’t think that we have that physical edge (and I’ve seen all of Tubs’ home games). I understand Tubs’ prerogative to have his own guys, but I feel that Bennie leaving hurt the program—and now we have to see him doing his fine work at UT. Gee, THANKS Tommy!

Mmm...don't think it was outbidding in this case...

…also share a perspective on salesmanship:

Mack/UT: Family owned for generations dealership salesmen selling top of the line luxury vehicles with full multi-year warranties

Tubs/Tech: Sal’s Auto Emporium salesmen selling anything that can be driven out of the lot, which is also the length of the warranty

Okay, that’s a little bit harsh. Point being that you would not hear Mack doing the “stream of consciousness” thing Tubs does (or whatever you want to call it) with the local media.

I would guess he knows you can’t change horses that many times and gain/retain credibility.

by Austin, Tx on Jan 13, 2012 9:51 AM CST up reply actions

Okay, that was a pretty smart aleck reply on second reading...

My point: Tubs does speak without thinking.* It is a problem. It creates the perception that there is confusion in the direction he is taking the team, defensive scheme, players, whatever the issue at that point may be. It also makes him appear indecisive and to be a man without a plan. This is turn makes it difficult to create credibility with the fan base. All of this my opinion of course.

Public statements are also a problem for the university. However, I believe they think about their statements before they are made.

Both the university and athletic department could benefit from PR training and/or hiring a credible outside PR firm (no, this is not a Spaeth joke, this is a serious suggestion).

*I never speak without thinking so it is credible for me to throw stones here. Phew, just barely dodged that lightening bolt so I better clarify that first sentence. I have never spoken to the media without thinking first.

Again I think you, Seth, are reading the HC well regarding his interviews.

They look like something he has to do whether he wants to or not, an obligation that he is fullfilling no matter what.

He trys to convey something positive even if he struggles with getting good words that match flowing thoughts, he quips a bit and that often does not translate well to a transcript without good context and inflection.

Mostly he fills the air with words in an interview.

I cannot take that and translate it to the locker room, he may be a completely different personality behind the scenses.

Additonally, the man is clearly not the first to speak to the notion that scheme is not all that important per se…we likely make too much ado about schemes and fooling the other guy, fundamentals are likely more impactful, technique may have more impact, football conditioning is important, quick football is more important, being able to react without thinking is key…that kind of stuff.

I bet this will change your mind...

After thoughtful consideration, I realized I’ve been unfairly hard on Tuberville. He may not have given us a championship, but he DID give us a RECORD-SETTING year:

1. First losing season since 1992 – think about that – not even Spike Dykes or Mike Leach were able to do that!

2. First loss to Baylor since 1995 – again, not even Spike or Mike could do that!

3. First time Tech won’t be in a bowl game in 11 years – again – he is doing things his predecessors never even dreamed of doing! Heck, what’s the fun in having only seven teams with longer bowl streaks (& two that are tied with you – LSU & Ohio State – might have heard of the) – you have to distinguish yourselves! That he has!!

4. Worst loss in school history Oklahoma State 66 v Tech 6!!

5. 66 are the most points ever allowed by Tech!

6. 60 points is largest margin of victory in school history!

I could go on – more school records were set this year – my point is, we’ve been looking at it all wrong. Tuberville has delivered a record-setting year. It’s all about perspective. What more could we want?

I say give the man a raise!!

i know nothing, really,

but i feel that full body conditioning, excellent nutrition, and excellent flexibility are the way to go. now, there are many different ways to achieve those 3 objectives. fitness industry is cutthroat, and everyone says this and that is the only correct way, when actually there are many correct ways, but also many incorrect ways. generalizing but hey, you know, i’m general

So True

There is so much crap in “fitness” I can only imagine at the college and pro football levels what it is like.

If I could just hit those a holes trying to circuit train in my gym weight room (swinging from weight racks like idiots, doing push ups under heavy weights that could fall on your head), Id feel a lot better. If you want to do crap you learned on a video then stay at home with your vcr.

But with all the “systems” different teams use in college football the main thing is getting the kids you want to sign, and then buy into whatever gimmick your selling and really “believe” that they are stronger and better prepared. You know confidence and team building, thats goal #1and we have zero confidence

Wylie 6 month trial period

From Ryan Hyatt (www.thewilliamsandhyattshow.com/2010/02/bennie-wylie-moves-to-tennesse-how-big-a-loss-for-texas-tech/):

I can’t say that I’m surprised that Texas Tech Strength and Conditioning coach Bennie Wylie is moving on to Derek Dooley’s staff at Tennessee. When Tommy Tuberville was hired he kept Wylie on out of professional respect but also sent a clear sign that a six-month trial was in effect, virtually ensuring that if Wylie found something better in the meantime he’d be smart to take it.

Of course some Tech fans will overreact and claim that Tuberville has "run-off" another great Leach assistant, but that really isn’t fair to either side. Every coach in every sport usually thinks "their guy" is the best guy when it comes to S&Q. I’m sure Tuberville has an idea who he’d like to work with and that’s the main thing here. For both the head coach and the S&Q coach you need to be on the same page from the git-go.

He does a wonderful job running this site. We all tend to use words out of context at times, but it doesn’t detract at all from the intended statements. Because I have to be very observant concerning words, sentences, meanings, etc. as a technical/document writer, I may catch more “mistakes” than I should. All that aside, I really enjoy everything put up here on DTN, even if I may not be in agreement. Grammer being used is a minor thing when the whole of the subject is considered. But, it is fun to “poke fun” at someone now and then. We all have fairly good senses of humor, so it is not as big a deal as it could be. YUK! I am really sounding silly now. OK. Thats all for now.

But yes, that is what I believe and what I remember from the time. I did a quick google search and that is the first thing that came up. I may look for another source later.

Hyatt suggests it was professional courtesy. Perhaps Wylie was not labeled as much a Leach person as some of the others. Or perhaps Tuberville was interested in him and wanted to see if the chemistry was there and to see if they were on the same page.

Whatever the reason I think many people if put on a six month probationary period would take that as a signal to dust off the resume.

Still a message

If I were a well-established member of any work team and a new boss came in and put me on immediate probation, I would take that as a clear message that my contributions were being questioned and not fully appreciated. I would be even more nervous if my new boss started telling me I had been doing it all wrong and needed to shift my focus away from everything I’d ever known..

This guy (Tubs) is being paid millions and part of his responsibility (and supposed expertise) is personnel management. If he truly appreciated Wylie’s worth, it seems inconceivable that he would make Wylie feel the least bit nervous about his job. Even the manager at Whataburger knows not to do that to a valuable team member.

"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James

Here’s what we know:

1. Wylie one one of the people that spoke out about Adam James and his work ethic.

2. So did Lincoln Riley and I’m sure some other folks.

3. Riley and those other folks were terminated relatively quickly.

4. Wylie wasn’t terminated quickly and was given a 6 month probationary contract. Wylie also attended the Tuberville initial press conference.

5. Why was Wylie even extended any sort of offer unless someone wanted him to be in the program? I’m guessing that it was Tuberville, but I don’t know. I do know that in order for this to be somewhat logical, I have to accept the fact that Tuberville is hiring and firing who he wants on his staff and I would guess that the administration would want to distance as much as humanly possible anyone and everyone that spoke out against Adam James. Wylie was the exception for some reason.

6. If Tuberville was giving Wylie the professional courtesy, then why weren’t the others also given the same courtesy . . . unless someone wanted him on the staff.

I have no idea if I’m right, and everyone is making valid arguments, but I still can’t get over the fact that of all of the people to be retained, after Wylie said this about Adam James:

Two days prior to the incident in question, I disciplined Adam James along with several other recievers. His attitude was poor the entire time; even with constant plees for improvement. By the end of the practice, a few of the other recievers accepted their lack of performance in the previous practice and worked harder. Adam was not one of these individuals. He was last on all the excercises asked to do and talked and “danced” during the discipline. When told that this was unacceptable, he simply shrugged his shoulders. I continued to encourge him with no success.

It makes me think that something else, where Tuberville’s hands may have been tied, was related to Wyllie leaving more so that Tuberville. Something doesn’t add up, but maybe I’m the one missing this entirely.

This^

You can’t afford to throw out the coach that has immediate contact with the players over the off season, unless and until you can replace him.

Tubs has a better way and lets Bennie go -----> Throw Tubs under the bus...

Tubs wants to keep Bennie, but is over-ruled by a higher power -—> Throw Tubs under the bus for going along with it…
Either way… Tubs should be thrown under the bus for this one…

That doesn’t seem like a fair rationale without knowing all of the facts. A lot of of assumptions.

In my mind, it requires fewer assumptions than a scenario where Tubs really wanted to keep him on...

I just can’t come up with a scenario where I think Tubs shouldn’t shoulder at least part of the responsibility…

One possibility Seth

is that Tubs didn’t think there was an adequate replacement available at the time? Just a theory

I would say MOST

of his responsibility is personnel management. He doesn’t do X’s and O’s apparently so he’s really only here to manage others

According to the article,

Wylie was making $225,000 at Tennessee prior to his move to UT. The writer states that he likely got a good pay raise at Texas. I’ve not seen any numbers as to what Wylie was paid at Tech.

Given the undercurrents at that time of the Tech administration and BOR not wanting to pay Leach his bonus, to me it’s plausible that Tuberville was told that he could “try out” Wylie for a time, but that he could find just a good as SC coach for less money if he tried.

Just speculating.

Wylie was retained as a professional courtesy until he could find work, I dont think Tubs had any intention of keeping Wylie, since quickness wins games and Wylie just makes strong tough hard working players

I also think that is why Wylie was given the 6 month retention/probation

I also think (as others have stated) that Tech needed to keep someone that could contact the players in the off-season while CTT and Tech looked for a new person to fill that spot.

I also think that Tubbs needed someone to coordinate the new weight room changes and knew he would be too busy talking at the Alum meetings, etc.

The "sand pit".

Coach leach was just asked this at WSU. He said, “yes”. Maybe it was just more of the erasing all things Leach? And, not important to some at all? And, I too, remember Tubs stating he had a different s&c philosophy, mostly for speed.

Reading between the lines

This news is more about promoting espn’s favorites texas and ohio state and less about Bennie Willie

by jef on Jan 12, 2012 9:06 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Maybe so...

But it still makes me cringe seeing a guy who did so much for Tech working somewhere else (and especially for a hated rival) because of the “belltowers.” Oh well, guess we gotta settle for the bottom of the heap for several years!

No worries

From what i have heard our cuurent s&c huy is also pretty good. The players like hom and respect him.

It worked out well for him. He is now at the premier school of Texas and we now suck.

I think Tuberville was just being pragmatic

When he got here, he had to focus his immediate attention on recruiting. Keeping Bennie on board was a short term solution to maintain offseason training continuity. It also gave both Tuberville and Wylie time to figure out more permanent solutions.

I don’t think Tuberville was “required” to keep Wylie. I don’t think he did it out of the goodness of his heart either. He may have been encouraged to fire Wylie, but that’s really hard to prove (he kept Cumbie after all).

The decision was a good one for both parties. Wylie had the chance to consider other opportunities. Tuberville had time to line up “his guy.”

How about

The third party? Fans. I can’t determine who is a good s&c coach and who isn’t….but people in the profession say that Bennie is at the top…and a terrific guy in addition. We have two years to look at joe walkers stamp on our team. I though tubs had an organized plan when this went down. 20/20 and our 3rd DC in 3 years makes me think otherwise.

This is a 3 ring circus up in here......

Every coach has his favorites

Check out my post about Leach completing his staff as Wazoo. Half of his staff are people he has worked with in the past. I think when Tubs came in he wanted to do the same thing, but maybe enough of his favs were unavailable at that time. Now, they are available, so he makes some moves. Whether or not this translates in any improvements on the football field will need to be seen this coming season. I am not a big Tubs fan (ya think?) but should he make big strides of improvement this year as far as results, then I am solidly behind him. If not, well, we’ll see.

Agree

I have no problem with his hire of Kaufman. Maybe “chemistry” and consistency with the D coaches has been part of what has been missing.

Really the only one it matters to is tuBS

because he has to think we (he) can WIN and from all the excuse making and poor attitude tuBS never gave the ’11 team a chance, So if this hire builds his confidence then good for him
