HBO is eyeing controversial Washington State college football coach Mike Leach as the subject of a new documentary series.
The team of Peter Berg, Jim Lampley, Sarah Aubrey and Michael Price are behind the project. That team produces the new HBO docu-series On Freddie Roach, set to debut Jan. 20, about the legendary boxing trainer battling Parkinson's Disease.
"I assume HBO will go for it because it will be really good," Berg tells B&C. "I don't know why they wouldn't."

I am not sure
that this is a good idea, but if I had HBO then I would likely watch it.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
I'm not so sure,
besides this affects a lot of people …. and, if it’s truly about Coach Leach, he’s still awfully young …. lots more life to live and thoughts to think.
It sounds exactly like the HBO series they do every year at an NFL training camp
bq “The plan for the new series is to have it cover training camp and through the first or second game of the season.”bq
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
Well my block quote attempt failed - I thought I was still in preview mode while I looked it up.
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
Could be a huge distraction
or could be a great recruiting tool or both.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
I like the recruiting tool approach, and publicity for the school.
ML will be wearing Washinton State stuff for sure.

I like the idea of giving
Leach more time on national TV and would find some way to watch the show.
you know
Mike will get a fair shake with Berg being a good friend of his. Who from her haw to play hance?

I think it's a documentary of training camp, not a drama with actors & such
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
documentary or otherwise...
Always good to trust the person you give access to

Maybe somefrom "Oh Brother, where art thou"
somebody who is sleazily self-righteous and of course who talks like a hick.
I like this
Leach has been somewhat of a “no-touch” person for many media types. Hopefully this will enabl him to give a positive image of himself, his team and his offensive genius. This is a bold move by HBO. One that will fly directly in the face of ESPN and allow some quality material to be produced about the inigmatic Coach Mike Leach. If this goes forward and becomes reality, i will be tempted to plot down some moola for HBO, just so I can view this series. On another angle, I sure do wish this was something about OUR coach,
.
but we got what we deserved, didn't we?

well, the documentary
might show some of the championship quality football Tuberville brought to Tech the last couple of years.
With the money I save from no longer contributing to Tech, I can afford to subscribe to HBO. Awesome. I hope Cinemax is included.
As Long As It Is Truthful
As long as it is truthful, I don’t see it hurting Tech.
Now I just wanna see if I can catch some Wazzou games this year.
i would seriously doubt,
HBO representing the facts in a representative manner. sure, it might be biased in his favor, and that would stroke all of our egos. but would it really help anything? i bet it will be pretty darn entertaining though, with HBO production money behind it
Wonder what all Wash St. Gets out of the deal.
They obviously get national exposure. They probably get some money as well. Sounds like some good decisions being made by all parties involved. Wonder what that is like. Also they play at AZ St. Next year. I plan on going to check out that game.
Hope HBO does it
I’ll find a way to watch, somehow. There’s lots of ways to skin a cat (actually, I like cats).
Sounds more like the CBSCS Confidential
but hopefully on HBO it would include the “colorful language” that is involved in men playing and coaching football

Just in someone is interested
there is a new picture of Mike up at Cougcenter and he is in excellent condition and ready for prime time TV.
Just a random thought.............why
is Coach Leach called “controversial”? Was Sharon Tate called controversial after her run in with the Manson family?

I tend to agree with your sentiment since other than the court cases there doesn’t seem to be much controversy left. It is pretty well settled that Hance/James fiasco was a fraud.

Wouldn’t some folks need to think that he is a good guy for there to be a controversy?

Think they really still think he is a good guy? I bet not, but who cares what they think.

Interesting question...
I had dinner with several folks from Lubbock last night. One with a relative high up at Tech, the others Tech alum who have lived in Lubbock forever. None of these folks liked Leach – not haters – they just didn’t care for him (mostly for what they thought were ill-thought out, embarrassing, arrogant comments to the media).
None of them were Tuberville sunshine pumpers or haters either. Just thought it was interesting coming from folks I have a lot of respect for and who discussed the issue like we were talking about the weather for the most part – none of the “you’re not a real fan if you don’t agree with me” thing.
When you have intelligent, informed folks on both sides of the issue – in significant numbers – yes – that does equal controversy in my book.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain
So I take your comment to mean that you
and the controversial chancellor made up?
We ought to Haboob his ass
Ummm, no, bb.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain
Interesting to me that the comments were interpreted as
these folks being okay with Leach’s termination. None of them were happy with how it was handled. Not one of them like Hance either.
They just aren’t Leach fans and weren’t upset that he was gone.

Whew .............
i guess my “outrage” interfered with my reading — my feeling of shame, too. (Do I have a right to feel shame for what TTU did?)
Interesting... Have they been enjoying the Tech football games much lately?

Funny you should ask...
…none are huge football fans. More so Tech fans.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain
Does that mean they are
“ok’ with the means to achieve Coach Leach’s removal? That’s what I labor with. Sure, I can see their sentiment. People have lots of varied taste, even in other people. And, College coaches come and go, for even more varied reasons. But, you pay them, slap them on the back and wish them luck. But, to these friends, the “ends justify the means”? Was it worth it to them even tho the entire staff, coaches and all their families had to pay such a heavy price; much-less the players, the team??
As FriscoRaider said this fiasco was a fraud; it’s been proven. Oh, this is so discouraging to hear. I do care about other’s opinions that differ from mine. That they don’t appreciate a certainly ‘personality’ type, or win loss record. If that results in my choice loosing … it happens everday.
But, to try and ruin a man because he embarrasses them??
I hope it just apathy … but, that scares me as well.
It is hard for me to understand that one could care about TTU and not be outraged by the fraud perpetrated against TTU.

I think he's still controversial to a fair % of the general population that has only cursory knowledge of the events.
You folks are of course very familiar with what occurred having lived it for the last two plus years. We at CougCenter have read all things Leach related since the hire and prior to so, besides being giddy over the upcoming season, we have a good understanding of how things were skewed in the media.
But not everyone has the interest to read the books and articles or even cares that much about football. Even my sis, after I texted her completely spazzing out the minute I’d heard we’d hired him, made some crack about locking players in closets. And I’m sure she got her “information” from one of her friends, most of whom are like her and have an interest in sports but not to the point where they really do some digging and find out the truth. Needless to say, I set her straight .My point is simply that people not close to the issue might still think of him as controversial with respect to the TT fiasco.
And I guess from a purely football standpoint he could be regarded as controversial too. Who else uses a sandpit to discipline and condition athletes? Who else sticks a desk on the 50 yard line and makes a kid study? Who else has a player run around campus with a cinder block and answer questions at various departments? Who else flings it down field eleventy billion times a game? Anyway, just my thoughts.

Good points and I have to say I'm very jealous of your new hire.
My real point was to point out that in the “fiasco” that was December of 09, the media seems to ONLY depict Mike Leach as controversial and none of the other players involved including our controversial chancellor and his controversial friend/alleged business partner and former espn analyst and former smu football player (remember the 5).
We ought to Haboob his ass
So glad y'all are informing yourselves
I would recommend reading the depositions from the lawsuits as well – they will tell you everything you need to know.
As far as the sandpit, the desk at the 50 yard line, etc. some say controversial, I say unorthodox and innovative!!
That’s part of why we miss him so much, well, and of course the man gets results. Not to mention the way he can fire up a fan base!
Here is the link to a page where you can find all the depositions and more if you’re interested (for Tech fans – it has been updated and has all kinds of new stuff I haven’t seen yet – I know what I’ll be doing for a while!): http://lubbockonline.com/filed-online/2011-01-12/leach-documents#.TxdRqfmfAZY

Well Austin
I have found those types of neutral folks the most rare. (Perhaps they understood your views and didn’t wish to set off the powder keg?) There is a segmented breakdown in Lubbock of different attitudes, unlike what some people say. There’s not everyone like minded on it. (And remember how many showed up at the book signing to keep the numbers grounded) there are also people who don’t care, and those that are clearly on teamwhitchcoach and whatever other camps there are but we have been over this before.
The most interesting variable I have found is bar-talk. Because with a little bit of beer the story becomes “He abused players in a shed” WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, WHAT? Yeah. That has a different meaning today. Fortunately, I told the guy to look into it, and he thought it sounded kinda weird too. That was the most exotic take on it I have seen so far and it was within the last week or so.
It's not like Tech and LBK embraced Leach from day one.
It wasn’t until the 2004 season (his fourth) when Tech hit the 50,000 mark for avg attendance. He and his style was (and still is for many) an acquired taste. It took years for the bandwagon to fill up. In fact, the attendance went down his first year at Tech (from 45,800 in 1999 to 42,200 in 2000).
Avg attendance also went backwards a bit from 2004 to 2005, then again from 2005 to 2006. So while he clearly had a loyal following, it wasn’t quite the Pilgrimage to Mecca from day one that some portray. I would say the TRUE fascination for a large number of Tech fans didn’t actually start until 2006-2007.
This board didn’t actually gain large numbers until after the 2007 season (when I also joined), if I’m not mistaken.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
This board wasn't near as cool until I showed up.
