Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Former Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach, now at Washington State, has completed his staff. In so doing, he has surrounded himself with familiar faces, as six are former staff members. His new DC is a good one with several years as a DC. The rest of the staff, if not a former employee, are highly capable. This strikes me as a huge contrast to the staff initially gathered by Tuberville. It seems that Leach not only has several familiar faces who already know what he wants, but the rest of the coaches are very experienced and should put forth a very good team offensively and defensively. This is a team that will be fun to check out throughout the coming season. The PAC-12 could very well be in for a rude awakening.

There are

Some good coaches on tubs staff…they have no identity or leadership from their boss. That will not be the case in Pullman. Everyone will know what they are looking for and where they are going. If you walk into two different Chili’s restaurants and have two completely different experiences…it’s because leadership matters.

Sorry that was my iphone

But even though leach was such a success, Tubs has had a pretty successful career as well. So who is a better leader is debatable. I suspect that Leach is too egotistical to be a great leader. His staff became successful after leaving him and were looking for a way out because leach would try to get evry job that became available everyehere

Have you met mike

And know him to be egotistical? What if I were to tell you he is the most genuine person you could ever meet? I don’t give two shits about what tubs did in the sec years ago…his record at tech speaks for itself. Mike was at tech for 10 years and that’s a he’ll of a lot longer Than I could last reporting to Gerald and 4 years with hance.

If his coaches were really looking for a way out

Then why is six of his new coaches at WSU former Tech coaches or players? Just because the media picked up on his uniqueness and wrote a lot about him, does not mean he is egotistical. He sure didn’t seek that exposure. It evolved simply due to what he was able to accomplish. Did he play it up? Sure! Wouldn’t you? And he did seek jobs elsewhere. That is what all coaches do in trying to make more and/or get a higher profile position. Egotistical? No way. Exceptional offensive football mind. Way!

Leach was an ethical, innovative, tough nosed leader who spoke truth to power.

Unfortunately, a few guys he worked for at Tech don’t value any of those things.

No kidding!

And those few guys at Tech screwed things up for the rest of us. History will remember them primarily for the railroading of Leach and the decline of the football program.

As far as what Leach and his staff will do in the Pac 12 this fall—watch out! It ought to be a lot of fun watching the Cougs Air Raid go to work on their unsuspecting opponents. Can’t wait. I’ll have to stream some of their games.

I suspect Leach has a very healthy ego.

One cannot succede in such a competitive environment without a strong sense of ego.

One cannot be a successful leader without a strong sense of ego…else they would rather be followers.

There is always a double edged sword with either a very strong ego or a very weak ego, although many people are looked as successful in spite of their egos.

Mike got into trouble not because of his ego, but because he would not allow the injustices to prevail.

I bet I can name more successful leaders with egos so great that most people could not sit in the same room, than I can leaders who had less ego.

Totally agree

To be in any high profile, powerful position like that – whether it be Head Coach or CEO of a major corporation most are going to have a healthy ego.

I agree with your assessment of why Leach got in trouble too. Some people won’t let injustices go even if it hurts them personally and I respect the heck out of anyone who makes a stand like that.

Where I draw the line

Is Jeff’s erroneous thought that mike is too egotistical to be a good leader. It’s the worst point on dtn in a long time.

I give jef a pass, we have been told so many lies that sometimes it is difficult for folks to separate them all out.

I didn’t pay attention to the block quoted portion below, likely I shut him off after ego statement.

Jef - please back your statement up with facts
His staff became successful after leaving him and were looking for a way out because leach would try to get evry job that became available everyehere

A link to an article where they were quoted saying such, a link to articles showing they had been seeking numerous interviews for other jobs themselves, etc.

I know I wouldn’t want someone speaking on my behalf if what they were saying wasn’t true. If what you’re saying is true, you won’t have any trouble backing it up. Look forward to seeing your proof.

Leach did admit that the Miami trip was an attempt to secure a job and I think that he also confirmed the interest in the Washington job (I may be wrong on this). I think the greater point is that Leach did look at other jobs. I think he was also connected to UCLA, Auburn and some others, but I also think that Leach wanted to see what his value was in the open market. It would be like if I have a salary, but I think that I could earn more money or I should ask for a raise, the only way for me to really know what my value is to interview with other potential employers. I think Leach did ask around quite a bit, but I also think he did it to gauge his value.

My question to Jef wasn’t about Leach, we all know he was looking at other openings. My question was about the assistant coaches. I’ve never seen anything about them looking for a way out. I think if you’re going to make statements like that as fact you should back them up.

I think my

My real issue is “I Suspect leach is too egotistical to be a good leader”. I wouldn’t have responded at all, but I think I could write a hard back book on the fallacies of this statement. Taking just the simple approach, the winningest coach at any university is probably a good leader. The statement was for shock value…but jarring nonetheless.

I expect great improvement in WSU football

Whether this or next year, it will happen. They should make a bowl, with 7 or 8 wins. Next year will show more improvement, with them making a run to finish at or near the top of the PAC 12. Of course, it will be very intertaining regardless of final results.

It was Kent Hance's ego and

unethical machinations that brought Tech football to it’s current state of affairs.

Mike clearly has a good relationship with many of his former assistants and players, even if that is not all. Others above have noted that intelligent and successful leaders are not timid and do have a strong sense of self.

And as I mentioned in another thread, Mike is in great shape. There is a new picture up at Coug Center today and he is very trim and athletic looking in WSU gear, sadly not TT clothes.
