Surprise Recruits visting South Plains

According to recruiting gurus and RRS, there are a few surprise recruits taking official visits to Texas Tech. The first, 5-Star recruit Trey Williams will be making an official visit today (Sunday). He will be hosted by his brother, Tyson a transfer from West Texas A&M who, as we have been told, was tearing up the secondary for Tech and will be a playmaker in 2012. Transfer rules required him to sit out a year. [Trey] Williams is committed to Texas A&M.

The second recruit is 4-Star CB Mesquite (Texas) Horn cornerback De'Vante Harris. While his recruiting options are wide open, he has narrowed his top four down to Tech, TCU, Ohio State, and Texas A&M. While immediate playing time appears to be the primary card Tech is playing, he is keeping his visit options open.

It can get exciting to see these types of recruits taking an interest in Texas Tech, but we have to remind ourselves they are 17-18 years old. In reading Harris' comments, he seems interested yet a little unsure on what he wants to do. I believe the coaching staff is showing these high profile recruits that they can make an immediate impact on the playing field and can back it up with the last two years of FR playing. They also do not appear to be spooked by the down year Tech had and all say something in common…they think Tech will get it turned around and they want to be part of something special. Also, the word "family" is constantly touted by every recruit who visits Tech. I believe this is why we all went to Tech. I love my Tech family and want to see it succeed.

I hope we are able to lure one of the two, especially since there is only one scholarship available. And if not, there will be a Trey Williams or De'Vante Harris in next year's class. Guns up!

Saw a picture...

of Tommy Tuberville and some other coaches sitting with Trey Williams at a table at Hooters. Supposedly that is a hot spot for taking our recruits. I hope Trey had a great visit and that De’Vante has a great visit on Monday. I don’t see any way that we would not take both if they wanted to come…which I’m not expecting. But I think it’s a big thing that we can attract these big player’s interests.

Playing time is Tech's only trump card

Trey Williams is a monster running back who has said all along he’s still firmly committed to A&M. After watching him and J. Gray play (both different styles) I feel Williams can potentially have the better career. That being said, A&M is attractive to Williams because:
1) new HC Sumlin—wins the coach charisma game over Tubs hands down, but must convince Trey that his spread will still allow a Christine Michael or Trey Williams to excel.
2) fan enthusiasm at Kyle Field—The Jones is impressive (when it is full) but it still can’t match 85,000 screaming Aggies rocking back and forth.
3) proximity to home—only about 80 miles from Spring, so whole family can easily attend all home games.
To get Trey to switch to Tech, Tubs needs to convince him that:
1) Tech’s offense will be more running-back friendly than A&M.
2) He can get significant playing time as a freshman—at A&M he most likely would be red-shirted if Michael is healthy.
3) the Big12 will be more beneficial to play in than the SEC.
4) Though family can’t travel as easily to Lubbock, they can get to Waco, Austin, easier than Fayetteville or Tuscaloosa, plus with both boys on same team they can visit both.
Don’t think he’ll switch but it would be great if he did.

If I was a DB

The last two conferences I would want to play in would be the Big 12 and Pac 12. You might not win all conference in the SEC because of all the talent but you won’t get as exposed as you would in the pass happy conferences. These athletes don’t care about all conference, all they want is to get to the league.

by TTUAlum on Jan 16, 2012 9:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Might depend on your objective, if your prime objective was to get better, then you might choose a conference where you would be challenged to cover the pass.

True but in the XII or Pac all you will ever play is zone coverage, in the SEC your expected to play man coverage and actually be responsible for tackles in the open field that provides a more NFL type experience.

I really am not trying to be Debbie Downer here; but 2012 is going to Suck.

Rivals just released its final 100 2012 prospect rankings, and again we did not have anyone from Tech on the list. Tommy has had three seasons now, and while we are ranked higher, where are the studs. Where are the guys that change the game. I know we are all about doing less with more; but where are the studs. Damit he promised.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-2867

I don’t have any confidence that Tommy knows how to recruit a football player. I am talking Wes Welker, Crabtree, Amandola, Kingsburry, Carter, Colby, and I could go on and on. I think he looks at the stars, and takes the ones that are over rated and nobody else wants. Not trying to turn on our players, but we need some football players in here.

I love Billy G, but our basketball team probably won’t win a Big 12 game this year, although I am hoping for a break through, but a sober Billy Clyde might not be a good idea.

Kanas is making some good noise with Weiss, so we might just find ourselves sitting at the bottom of the pile next year. And what a cluster this year, allegedly players giving away plays, players leaving the team that we need, coaches dirty recruiting, it’s just a mess.

How can anything good come out of all of this.

3 years?

“Year 1” was simply retaining recruits Leach already had coming in. His second class was a class that half of were redshirted and it won’t be until this class of recruits that aren’t even here yet that will make this 3rd year you talk about.

I'm an idiot

I thought you were talking about NFL prosepcts. Anywho, Rivals may not have some recruits of our’s lstsed, but we have 3 ESPNU 150 recruits.

by Noah Lot on Jan 18, 2012 3:04 AM CST up reply actions

Tommy was hired because he is Tommy.

They brought him in because he was supposed to bring in bigger, stronger, and faster recruits. That first year was Leach’s class, but his name was supposed to steal a few here and there. New coaches always bring someone along. All Tommy did was lose our top receiver to LSU.

True, not many freshman ever make an impact. But with the injuries this team had, several of those prized recruits have already hit the field, and their contribution did not make an impact. It is fair to say that Tommy can’t complain about lack of experience in 2012. Year 2012 will be make or break, unless you are one of those 10 year plan guys.

Even if we land those three ESPNU 150 recruits, Tommy still has to coach them. Tommy has proven he can’t coach 3 star recruits. I don’t think we have enough 4 star recruits in the fold to make a difference, and last time I checked, we don’t have any 5 star recruits.

Last year

I thought Starts or Wheeler had atleast one 5 star ranking? Was a star removed? Or am I totally making this up?

by ttuvault615 on Jan 18, 2012 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

Wheeler

was originally a 5 star WR on Scout I believe, but not Rivals. But after he committed to Tech, he was moved to a 4 star.

by J.Brown5 on Jan 18, 2012 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure

most of Leach’s recruits were below 3 stars. So, saying Tubs can’t coach them is kind of baseless.

Yep, nothing from the past two seasons shed light on Tommy's ability not to coach 3 star recruits.

What are you talking about?

Per Rivals….
2006: 23 3-stars, 4 4-stars
2007: 17 3-stars, 1 4-star
2008: 10 3-stars, 3 4-stars
2009: 15 3-stars, 5 4-stars

Interesting.

So why do people always make an argument about how magnificently Leach was able to coach untalented players? These number are on par, and years like 2006 are even better than what Tuberville has brought in and will bring in this year.

In 2006, our recruiting class was ranked 25th on Rivals...

Which is what this year’s class is currently ranked…
That was Mike’s highest ranked class….
People make the argument that he was able to coach “untalented” players because he found a number of 2 stars and even a few 0 stars who contributed significantly to the team… along with many 3 stars…
His recruiting wasn’t terrible… but it was never as highly ranked as we usually ended up in the polls at the end of a season…
We make the argument because we saw it happen… many times…

From 2002-2010

Leach’s recruits were nearly 70% 3 and 4 star players. Not to invalidate any of his abilities, because obviously he was a good coach, but only 5 seasons were his teams ranked in the polls out of 10 seasons, and 4 of those 5 were averaged at #20 in the AP (#18, #20, #21,#22). His recruiting classes from 2002-2010 were ranked in the 30’s (after being averaged out). Considering he spent half the time with teams outside the top 25, it seems like he just squeaked out a little more than what his players were theoritically capable of. He was simply consistent, not anything particularly excellent or extraordinary.

by Noah Lot on Jan 20, 2012 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

That's kind of funny...

If we were ranked in the top 25 for five years out of ten, that means their final ranking (performance) was better than their recruiting ranking AT LEAST five times!
Interesting that you state the average recruiiting class rank was “in the 30’s”… How did you come up with that number?
The average I calculate from Rivals is ~ 39.7… a fairly significant difference from perfoming within the top 25 for half the time…
Seems like you’re really just trying to downplay or minimize his accomplishments or capabilities… Why?

You caught me in my rhetoric

But let me reiterate that I do not think Leach was a bad coach. I’ve just always thought better options are capable of being here at Tech to make us even better, which is why I don’t get an automatically angry reaction at the sight of the words Mike Leach and Texas Tech in the same vicinity. Plus he reminds me of Rex Ryan a little bit… which in terms of coaches, I prefer the Belichickian type. I just find his success marginal in context of his recruiting, and he probably benefitted from a couple of programs in other conferences who recruited better but did not have a decent coaching situation.

Don't expect much

This years class won’t be anything close to last years. It’s really hard to sell a program with so much turnover among coaches and negative trending. I suspect we’ll be somewhere inside the top 30 if we are lucky. 2012 is going to be very tough for Tech and the result of the 2011 season was a pure disaster which doesn’t give us much hope. Defensively we some miracles to happen fast in order to compete.

I am thinking that maybe Leach and Hance can have a standing score card in 2012.

You know, compare wins and losses, and see who comes out better. Maybe Leach getting a job is good for us. Maybe Hance will feel the pressure, and get off his high horse and do something.
