GAME RECAP
MVP
Jaye Crockett | Crockett score 19, grabbed 8 boards and played hard for the entire second half when the game was obviously out of reach.Numbers
2 | TTU had 2 fast break points, a Luke Adams pass late in the game. No easy buckets.40 | TTU had 40 of their 54 points off the bench, which means that the starters aren't contributing anything right now. 6 to 23 | TTU only had 6 assists to 23 turnovers. This team isn't making it easy on themselves. |
THE RESULT | CAN'T SHOOT | Get used to this, at least for this year. There's just not offensive punch on this team and I mention it below, but it looks like Lew and the team is so focused on the high-low post game that they are completely ignoring the other aspects of the offense. If you take out Crockett's 6 of 14 and the team shot 6 of 28 from the floor, which is 21.4% from the floor. That's just abysmal, from a shooting percentage and from a shot perspective. This team is struggling to even muster a decent shot on every possession and it looks woefully disjointed. I'm not sure what needs to be done, but this team could start with figuring out how to feed the post from the wing.
BACKCOURT
Jararez Willis | Willis was the only player that did much of anything against Kansas, but on Saturday, Willis was 0 for 2 with no assists and 1 turnover in 26 minutes. No production.
Ty Nurse | Didn't score for the second straight game, was 0 for 3 and actually asked for a clear out as time was winding down on a possession. It didn't work. No production.
DeShon Minnis | Minnis played hard, but he turned the ball over 7 times, had 7 points, 3 assists and 7 boards. This team's lack of scoring may be epitomized by Minnis as a player.
Kevin Wagner | Minimal minutes.
Luke Adams | The only player on the team that has a concept of how to get the ball in the blocks other than from the high post. Adams gets the concept of feeding the ball into the blocks and even sending it in on a re-post. He may get the start against OU because Nurse can't shoot right now.
FRONTCOURT
Jordan Tolbert | He didn't play well, but at the least he contributed. Missed some dunks he made earlier in the year and just couldn't get rolling. He did grab 4 offensive boards and 9 rebounds overall, but he also had 4 turnovers.
Robert Lewandowski | It's starting to get embarassing. Lew only had 3 turnovers, but he's playing like a robot and he's forcing passes in the post at bad angles and when the low post player isn't open. Lew had 2 points, 1 rebound, no assists and 3 turnovers. No production.
Jaye Crockett | The only player, other than Adams, who had a clue as to what to do offensively. Had to take 14 shots to get 19 points, but at least he scored.
Clark Lammert | Lammert gave good effort, but he is a much, much less athletic version of Michael Prince. Let that sink in for a second. Again, nothing wrong with his effort and despite playing when the score was lopsided he was playing each possession and I can't say that about the starters.
Jaron Nash | Gillispie is very much reluctant to play Nash. I get that Nash is wild, but he's more athletic than the other options. He did get into foul trouble, so maybe Gillispie would have played him more if he could have.

Something needs to happen quick with our offense, I hope we work on running a few different sets while bringing the ball up the floor. And we need a deep shooter to get open that can make the shot. Until then Big 12 teams won’t have to change anything defensively when they play us, and will pick up easy wins as long as they don’t struggle offensively against us.

I’m guessing that’s what Dusty Hannahs is supposed to be and Marshall Henderson (I think he’s at S. Plains and averaging 18 a game), i.e. guys that can stretch the defense.

Exactly...
Henderson was a huge loss to our squad this year. I can’t wait for Hannahs to get here next season.

Was hoping this team would match or exceed last year's B12 win total (5)
Thought that would be a good confidence builder and indicator of things heading the right direction. I firmly believe that BCG is the right guy for the job, but the results may come slower than we had hoped.
If you believe (as I do) that Tech will not compete with top teams and will struggle on the road, the early schedule simply has not been conducive to winning. I am hopeful that they will put it together when OSU, A&M, OU, etc. visit the USA. But I’m starting to realize that it will take supreme effort and execution for 40 minutes to get this team any conference win. Even the mediocre teams in this conference are not cupcakes – especially from Tech’s perspective.
Ideally, a team should establish its lineup and rotation during pre-conference play. But if regulars aren’t producing, I see little risk in trying someone else (realizing that options may be limited). Clearly, something needs to change. Example: I would like to see Adams get more time. As Seth C. mentions, he knows the game and knows how to feed the post (which can’t be said for everyone). I also think he can knock down 3s reasonably well. His size/athleticism could be a bit of a defensive liability, but I like his effort. And right now, I would be willing to take his offensive production and give up a little on defense. Not suggesting Luke is “the answer”, just would like to see him and others get more of a shot.
Not meant to critcize the staff either, just my uninformed opinion. I don’t expect them to veer away from their established philosophy just to win a few games now.
2014
Looks like it will be that long before we see any actual improvements in Texas Tech Men’s basketball. BCG has been able to get quick results at other venues, but this could really be a tough one for him to “make over”. He had almost nothing to start with and grabbed as many bodies as he could that he felt would fit into his style. The most disappointing player, to me, is Big Lew. I just felt that when he arrived on campus, we would gwt to see anothe Harold Hudgens type results. Not going to happen. He just seems so limited; much more than I would have thought. If Tech wins 15 games this year, it will be sort of a miracle, so expect at best 12 wins, with 10 anticipated.

Sorry folks...
It’s hard to watch this group of guys try to play basketball. Whether its BCG’s theory that those who practice hard get to play (if they don’t, get rid of them) or there is just a lack of talent, something is not right with this team. I’m not an expert (though I have played the game) but the lack of a cohesive unit on the floor is really hard to watch. Out here on the left coast we don’t get to see Tech that often and the few times I’ve tried to watch them is really painful.
Good write up Seth
Too bad our team isn’t as good at their trade. Less athletic version of m. Prince. Ouch.
