Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Texas Tech 55, Oklahoma 64 | Post Game Thoughts

Box Score | Post Game Quotes

GAME RECAP
MVP
Jaye Crockett | Hard not to pick Crockett again as he had a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Numbers
26-8 | OU had 26 points in the paint to TTU's 8.
0 | TTU had no fast break points.
7 to 22 | TTU only had 6 points off of turnovers while OU had 22.

THE RESULT

BETTER EFFORT, SAME RESULT | You're going to think that I'm crazy, but I'm encouraged and maybe I shouldn't be encouraged. The game itself was similar to so many games that we've seen before. Lots of turnovers, 22 for the game and an astounding 15 in the first half. If you consider each of those turnovers a possession and assume that Texas Tech converts a score on just a third of those turnovers, which would be 7, and Texas Tech wins this game by 5 points. I also think the offense looked better in that the players were more aggressive offensively and there were more passes into the post from the wing, rather than just the high post spot. I don't think the team carried out that plan as well in the second half, but it wasn't bad.

Maybe I'm encouraged because of this Raider Power episode that focuses on assistant coach Bubba Jennings and him working with players. It's not so much what he's doing, but rather who is in the video. In the video is C Kader Tapsoba, who hasn't played a minute this year, and the video is shot on December 12, 2011, which makes me think that Gillispie realized some time ago, that despite the fact that Tapsoba may be able to contribute and practice this year, he's redshirting Tapsoba with the thought that Gillispie will essentially have three 6-10 to 6-11 players to put out on the floor next year. Obviously, the talent level of those players is most likely not going to be the caliber of player at Kansas or Baylor or Texas, but I think I get Gillispie's plan. BCG probably saw the writing on the wall this year and knew that he could take his lumps this year, redshirt who he really needed to redshirt, i.e. Tapsoba, get some experience for the freshmen players so they are accustomed to the Big 12 and just let the season happen.

I suspected that this team wouldn't win four or five conference games after the non-conference schedule and that number may be one or two at this point, but I do think that BCG has a plan. BCG has stock-piled three players that give this team immediate height next year and we also know that he has signed a shooting guard in Dusty Hannahs who can absolutely light it up from beyond the three-point line. The biggest task that Gillispie obviously sees is the situation at the point guard spot, where there are two point guards that have committed, but no verification that they've signed. BCG will have to make a determination if a player will be cut to make room for one of these point guards, but that's what he's currently weighing.

BACKCOURT

Javarez Willis | It's amazing to watch some of the passes that Willis attempts during the course of this game. Blatant passes into double-teams and putting his teammates in bad spots. This is the Jekyl and Hyde nature of this team, which is that Willis scores 16 on 5 of 9 and 4 of 6 from the three point line, but then he has 5 turnovers.

Ty Nurse | Played all 40 minutes and didn't necessarily hurt the team as he had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 turnover, but only contributed 5 points.

DeShon Minnis | Started, but had a bad and rushed shot in the lane and was promptly pulled from the game. He saw 3 minutes in the first half and 4 minutes in the second half.

Luke Adams | Minimal minutes.

FRONTCOURT
The greatest players can count and account for every single player on the court. So they’re able to pass the ball on time on target, whether it’s football or whether it’s basketball or whatever. And we have a hard time. The ball sticks in our hands. So if a guy’s open and we don’t pass on time on target, we’re not really for sure where all the defenders are and those kinds of things.
- Billy Gillispie
On the team's turnovers.

Jordan Tolbert | Tolbert had a very rough night, going 1 of 10 from the floor and 3 of 6 from the line. He had some good looks at the basket, but his legs look a bit tired and doesn't have the spring in his jump that he seemed to have last month. I think the weight of trying to carry this team is weighing on Tolbert. Tolbert also turned the ball over 5 times. He did grab 10 boards, 5 of them were offensive, so he's still battling and that's good.

Robert Lewandowski | Lew looked more comfortable, but it's still not enough. He looked more comfortable getting the ball in the post from the wing, but Lew isn't looking to score or carry this team. Only 6 points, 3 rebounds and 4 more turnovers.

Terran Petteway | Ed. I forgot to put his name back into my saved PGT, so I'm adding this a bit late. I thought that Petteway actually looked assertive as I've ever seen him, so maybe the one-game suspension did him some good. Petteway hit a couple of three-pointers and was active. I'm guessing that Petteway still doesn't feel comfortable mixing it up inside, although mixing it up inside is what Petteway excelled at doing while in high school. Not the best game, but it was nice to see Petteway be more assertive.

Jaye Crockett | Crockett has had two good games in a row and that's encouraging. The strange thing is that Crockett only got 21 minutes and seemingly deserved more time considering he was a bright spot offensively. Again, 14 points, 10 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 block.

Clark Lammert | Lammert is getting minutes that I thought that Jaron Nash would get and maybe that says something about Nash. Again, I think Nash is the better option, but I don't see practices.

BCG still considered the savior of Tech BB?

I don’t know because I don’t really follow the team very close…just wondering what people think at this point in his first year.

11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.

Absolutely NO DOUBT

While the W/L does not reflect, the men’s basketball team is much improved over last year. Instead of having two players on the court actually trying, this year we have 5. The team this year has never played together and that is what is hurting us right now. Give these kids time and the “stockpile” for next year and I think you will see dramatic results.
The talent is developing, the fire and intensity is there, and unlike the football program, this group has a plan and is following that plan.

I agree BB

It is hard to watch them struggle as we all know there is plenty of talent on the bench. But, as you said, they are new to each other and it will take until next year for them to become familiar with one another. Patience…..

I am behind Billy G. for now.

This program needed to be stripped down and started a new. I was hoping for at least 5 or 6 wins in Big 12 play, but I don’t think it is going to happen. I will expect at least 8 wins in the Big 12 next year. If we have another year like this one, then Billy G. should find a pink slip in his locker.

My how we have fallen on such hard times. Thank goodness for women’s basketball, soccer, and softball. I hope the spring sports do better. We could find ourselves in last place for the all sports trophy.

The nepotism from the Knight group and meyers

created the downfall. While daddy did well with this team, boy knight did not. He lacked experience, drive, and coaching ability to continue to put a good product in front of the Tech fans. Billy Clyde is a change agent of the first degree. He will get us into the post season next year…………you can book it.

That would exceed my expectations.

I have learned one thing in the last two years on DTN, if BB says it, make is so.

I really want to advise the two of you to tap the breaks. For Btech, I know we like things done yesterday, but you want a tournament team within 3 years of a broken program? If TTU wins 8 conference games next year, it will be nothing short of a miracle.

To blackbeard, I’m hopeful that Tuberville gets to .500 next year. There’s no doubt that I think BCG is the right coach, but I think that by year 3 TTU will play in the post-season is realistic. For me, I had no idea how bad it actually is.

but I stick with my prediction.

by blackbeard on Jan 18, 2012 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

The impatience is somewhat understandable

BCG has created high expectations:

UTEP: Pre-BCG (9-20), BCG Year 1 (6-24), BCG Year 2 (24-8, NCAA)
A&M: Pre-BCG (7-21, 0-16 B12), BCG Year 1 (21-10, NIT), BCG Year 2 (22-9, NCAA), BCG Year 3 (27-7, NCAA Sweet 16)

If the definition of post-season includes NIT, I still wouldn’t say “book it” (not my style) for next year, but I think that “from here, it’s possible”.

It was encouraging to hear the game announcers last night say of BCG (and Lon Kruger) that the rest of the B12 better get their licks in now.

by rednblackET on Jan 18, 2012 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I agree, but what I worry about are the unrealistic expectations. I think BCG is going to be just fine, but if there are expectations that he “needs” or “will” win 8 conference games next year or he needs to hit the road, then that will be unfortunate. BCG has proven that he’s a winner. I’ve got a bad feeling that if the results aren’t there next year, people are going to call for his head and I think that’s not the right move.

We .....excuse me, THEY, gave Pat Knight 3.5 years

of course his dad would have kicked our controversial chancellor’s ass if he had been fired sooner.

I’m taking BCG’s history at UTEP and wTf, er aTm as my basis. And I would include the once famed NIT as post season.

See Btech above, who wants him fired if he doesn’t win 8 conference games next year. I don’t want him fired next year or the year after. If he can’t get it done in 4 years then it’s time to move on.

Fully Support BCG

It will take some time seeing how bad of shape this team was in when he received it. I suspect we’ll be much improved next season.

Tapsoba...

I was wondering why Kader had not seen any playing time this year. I thought for sure he would have immediate impact due to his size. It’s understandable now knowing he’s redshirted to give our team a better chance next year. With him and Tolbert (a year of experience) in the froncourt, it should be fun to watch.
On another note, nice article in the FWST yesterday:
http://www.star-telegram.com/2012/01/16/3663817/tcu-daniel-meyer-coliseum-will.html
about all the basketball facilities in the Big 12 and how TCU really needs improvement. I was happy to see Tech in the Top 3 in capacity and luxury suites.
Also a big shout out to Don Burk, Texas Tech grad, who is now the Ad Director at the ST. Congrats!

I like watching Coach Gillispie's interviews

He answers the question and always seems to enjoy talking about his work, players, and coaches…no I don’t expect him to be so cheerful after a lose.

That was a nice video featuring Coach Jennings.

Has something happened to Tolbert ? His impact has all but disappeared…

BCG's doing fine

He’s having to rebuild this program from the bottom up. PK didn’t leave him any players. He’ll get the team winning by next year, but right now we’re taking our lumps since the players are young and inexperienced.

by djn on Jan 18, 2012 11:12 AM CST reply actions

I agree that it’s odd that Crockett only got 21 minutes. To me, Crockett is easily the most effective offensive player that we have in that he can create his own shot. Tolbert shows a lot of promise and works hard to get position on the block, but it seems that teams have just figured out that if you don’t let him catch it down there, you effectively stifle the whole offense.

The only portion of this game I got to watch was near the end of the first half which contained about 4 turnovers in 30 seconds. Maybe that just left a bad taste in my mouth…

Players playing and then others not

I think BCG is playing certain players …. best or worst or average .… so that they can get experience. I think BCG knows we are not going to win or have a very slim chance of winning so he is using the games as a major immersion program. Send a player into the game to utilize what they might have learned in practice that week and see how well they do. They either sink or swim. Then send the next player in to see how they do. And so on. I think this whole season is being considered as practice.

Just like Seth C.

I somehow had the same thought of being encouraged after this game. So even if Seth is crazy, at least he’s not alone.

TOs in the first half were horrible – not only the number, but the type. Tolbert struggled. But the TOs improved in the 2nd half. Crockett had a good game. Willis shot the 3 well. The team held a slight rebounding edge. And most importantly, they wouldn’t go away and found themselves still in a game on the road until very late. There ARE bright spots. This team DOES have some talent. There is simply little margin for error. If they are going to win some B12 games this season, they must figure out how to turn in a complete effort.
