Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

I've always tried to make it clear that DTN is not a political blog, but as you may or may not be aware, some of your favorite sites (Wikipedia, Reddit, Google, etc.) are protesting the proposed SOPA legislation. Vox Media owns SB Nation and also owns DTN and this is their official stance, but the short and sweet version is that there really isn't a DTN if this legislation passes. No links or quotes from any third party publisher and no YouTube video are just some of the things I'd have to deal with if this legislation passes.

With a good enough group of fans, DTN will survive and do well.

There are a lot of eyes looking for TTU good good to talk about here

The problem isn’t that there aren’t good fans, but myself and you as a DTN member couldn’t post a link to a FanShot or FanPost to any other website on the internet. If we did, then I could be held liable for allowing that as could you for posting it.

The record companies have already ruined YouTube for music fans

For a while there YouTube was the greatest resource ever for obscure musical performances. Basically every time a band performed with a camera in the house, that clip wound up on YouTube. Then the record companies started clamping down. Five rare videos I had recorded 20 to 30 years ago & posted to YouTube had their sound removed or were completely deleted. None of which have ever been officially released & likely never will be. So why kill such a great archive? Rare video performances a third of a century old are not what is killing the record industry. Fans of those bands are the only ones still buying CD’s today.

I’ve been downloading all the obscure performance videos of bands I like to my hard drive because I fear that at some point all music will be deleted off YouTube. At that point the only way to see rare performance clips will be to wait for a PBS Pledge Drive or a VH1 Special, like in the pre-internet days. That’s an improvement?

I have not kept up with this at all, but after reading

there has to be a better solution. I gotta agree with both Seth and mb, this would be a huge loss of archived information and defeat the purpose of the internet completely. While I do think that recording artists, writers, and film makers have a right to make huge amounts of money there has to be a way forward to allow linking.

I don't at all support this measure

But I think saying that no one will be able to share content on DTN if this is passed is diving into the scare-tactic techniques of politics that drive me up the wall. Directly from the Vox link:

Although the legislation purports to target only so-called foreign pirate sites and not US-based sites or those that end in .com, .net, or .org, there is a very real possibility that (over)reaction to the legislation would catch more than a few U.S.-based .com sites in its crosshairs.

In other words, the bill doesn’t SPECIFICALLY target US sites, so to categorically say that none of the activity cited would be allowed if this bill passed is inaccurate. The statement from Vox is not short on conjecture.
It would definitely lay the groundwork for turning the crosshairs away from foreign sites and to US-based ones so the initial precedent is what we all agree on opposing.
Although this is a nasty bit of legislation and it’s easy to conclude what might happen, we shouldn’t attribute something to the bill that is not in the current language in order to tap into an audience’s emotions.

From my interpretation of the bill, the poor definition of what is copyrighted material could prohibit me from linking to third party websites where the material is copyrighted (is that a word?). I didn’t read it word-for-word, but that was my interpretation.

This is so scary and totalitarian sounding

I am all for not ripping people off for their artistic licenses and royalties and copyrights but what happened to Freedom of Speech.

I mean just look at SARR’s post the other day. He quoted and took liberty to slightly alter a quote from the movie "The Hangover." That would have been illegal if this new law passes.

No pictures or gifs or videos or quotes from books.

This law (bill) is just not right.

In case you are wondering (and because of the free pass on this political subject)

One of your Senators, big John Cornyn is in favor of the SOPA / PIPA bill.
Can’t tell what Kay Bailey favors or if she is still a Senator.

Rep Ron Paul is against. You will have to look up your own Rep out of the 32.

If you want to influence the voters write a letter, email, or call the 3 people who pretend to be interested in you.

The author of SOPA (TX Rep Lamar Smith) is a copyright violator

His website used a photo without credit or payment. His website was taken down after the story broke.

Most of the people in the congress have no idea what the internet is. I don’t know if you all have seen this. This is how former senator Ted Stevens describes the internet

Go to Wikipedia today

It is blacked out today but it redirects you to a page where you can enter your zip code and it will tell you who your reps are. Each rep has a contact phone, email, twitter, and facebook link for you to voice your opinion about SOPA and PIPA. Pretty nifty.

My google reader isn't working today.

This is a very important part of my daily routine. I subscribe to a half million blogs that are interesting to me. Lot’s of the writers of these blogs are in the same industry. We gather and share ideas to help eachother. I’ve managed to reach out and connect to quite a few people thru my website and hard work.

If this is taken away from us, my life’s work will be incomplete and irrelevant.

That is scary folks. Take action.
