I'm so envious of WASU right now. I can't wait for Tuberville to get this thing on the move. Good Luck Coach!

...and I thought this would just be a fun little article to read in passing. DTN Poker, Indeed!

What this post should have been about was the fact that Defensive and offensive co-ordinators on that list: Vic Koening, Mark Snyder, and Jeff Casteel are not better hires than Art Kaufman. Stu Mandell might be right about Leach but his ranking of the OC’s and DCs give me zero credibility for his research. And there is no way Mike Leach is a better hire than Urban Meyer.

I have seen less relevant things posted. This is at least in part about a coach that recently helped make Texas Tech football relevant. Should we not have posts about Wes Welker, Graham Harrell, Danny Amendola, etc.. because they are no longer at Tech?

I disagree

I think you are confusing coaches and players. Players are people who have a degree from the University, in most cases. A coach does not. They come and go.

I suspect that when Tuberville is fired or we pay him to resign and if he were to ever find another coaching job that there would be posts on DTN. If SI reported an opinion of his hire then likely we would hear about it here. Isn’t your comment really about not wanting to be reminded that Tech made a huge mistake in firing the last coach.

"Isn’t your comment really about not wanting to be reminded that Tech made a huge mistake in firing the last coach."

No. I honestly did not like the man. I think that character counts and ML was a good offensive coordinator and did a lot of Texas Tech football, but I wouldn’t want him coaching my children. Specially with his ties to the porn industry. But, that is off topic and just something personal for me and my family. No, my comment was about wanting to read about Texas Tech not former coaches. If Tuberville is fired, then so be it, but I won’t be posting links to Double T Nation about it. He would be gone. I would be focused on the new coach. That is all just my personal thoughts on that.

If being honest about how I feel, when asked a question about my personal believes is unfriendly, then so be it. I would gladly be your friend but that is not my purpose for posting on a internet website.

Also when does being a “member for two weeks” mean my posts are less relevant than yours. Next thing you know, I will starting seeing posts that I am representing a PR firm for the James just because I don’t “group think” and kiss the ground ML walks on. I liked and appreciate what he did for tech, but I do not like the man at all. I have read Double T Nation a long time. Just because I want to start posting now doesn’t have anything to do with my validity.

I realize this is only one person’s opinion and so take it for what it’s worth, but here is his response:

Liberal, Alternative rag – but gets wide readership among hipsters, gays, etc. Balanced? Uh, no.

Disagree

There is a big difference between “judging” and understanding the readership. The majority of writers write to their readership – there is a difference between writing to and audience of microsoft millionaires or the “hipster, gay, etc.” audience. The style and content will likely be vastly different in this example.

No slurs or judgment was made by anyone about the members of the readership, at least not by me.

I never used the word slur, I said that your friend made a judgment on the readership that may, or may not, be accurate. The point being is this FanShot has devolved into the thought that a judgment is being made about Leach based on this article. Your friend made a judgment based on what he believes to be relevant information about who reads that periodical. Both judgments are unfair.

Seth I think you're reaching here

If someone asked you about the readership for the Dallas Observer or any other papers/weekly’s/publications in the metroplex would you decline to respond on the basis that the information is not relevant and would be judgmental?

I didn’t mention Leach to my friend or give him any context. I sent a text saying, “Seattle Weekly’s The Daily Weekly – trash journalism or okay? Need to know, thanks!”

I don’t have an opinion as to who reads the Dallas Observer. I don’t have an opinion about who reads DTN. I don’t like to stereotype people. My point is that it seems unfair to make a judgment about Leach based on the company he keeps (and no one has mentioned that he may have had a contractual agreement to participate in the all-star game and may have ended his relationship with the porn-master) and it’s unfair to make a judgment about a newspaper based on who reads that newspaper.

I think DTN has just been insulated from people that don’t care for Leach, and for the record I don’t care if anyone likes or dislikes anyone. However, if the thought is to be nice and make friends, then there have been some awfully not-nice and un-friendly things said about Tuberville, Hance, Myers, etc. The point being that it’s generally good to be nice and I don’t think he’s being mean, but westtxscrub is voicing his opinion on the fact that he doesn’t like Leach. It’s okay.

I’d also add that I won’t judge people based on who they know or who they might be with in a photo. If that’s true, then I might have a lot explaining to do from a trip to Mexico while I was in law school.

And as westtxscrub has pointed out, it doesn’t matter if he’s been a member for 2 weeks or 2 years or 1 day, he/she is entitled to his opinion.

sometimes you work with people with whom you don’t agree with – whether it be what they do in their personal life, other business ventures, the language they use and other issues we are not allowed to discuss on DTN.

That doesn’t mean their habits I don’t agree with rub off on me. For instance, I don’t suddenly have a thing for sheep because I work with a lot of aggies.

Next time you want to do personal attacks you can shut your mouth. Just because you like ML and don’t want to admit he has shady dealings don’t personally attack me. As a woman westtxscrub

I agree with you that porn is demeaning & degrading to women. I don’t mind saying I’ve seen it.

But I would like to ask you how you know?? You can’t know that without having watched it.

So here’s the problem: how can you so harshly and sanctimoniously (not disagreeing porn is a bad idea) condemn porn without having seen it?

Your credibility is questionable for one of two reasons:
1. Either you haven’t ever seen porn which means you can’t comment with credibility.
2. If you have seen it, then you are associated with it as well, aren’t you?

Because Leach may be in business with someone who is in a shady (not illegal) business, does not mean he partakes.

So you may actually have more experience with porn than he does. Or you are speaking loudly and harshly about an issue you do not know about first hand. Either way you lose credibility with me.

I here what you are saying westtxscrub ...

sexual impulses/addiction and knowing/hanging out with people in that industry is a slippery slope and does raise questions. There are times that there is a correlation … but not always. Do we know for a fact that Mike is attracted to porn? If so, then a lot of questions should be raised. But if he isn’t, it’s a non-issue.

We might question Mike’s discernment from accepting gifts from Gray if he knew that Gray was in the porn business, but for all we know, Mike has no knowledge of Gray’s involvement in it. The guys who make money in that industry, as well as drug dealers are smooth operators and master manipulators. They will only share with you only what they want you to know while they work you for what they want from you. They also have a sixth sense of who is interested in what they are offering and who isn’t. If your not interested, they will never talk to you about their “business”.

I have hung out with drug dealers, fencers, and probably a prostitute or two in my day, but never have done drugs or sold them, bought or sold stolen merchandise, nor hired or pimped out a prostitute.

Yet, if someone saw me with one of those people, they might think I am a part of the same game which couldn’t be further than the truth.

Your response is a non-sequiter

You make as accusations about Leach’s character based on one article. The majority of the article is dedicated to describing the business affairs of one John Gray. The article also mentions Gray as having marketed for sports teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Blackhawks and the Mississippi Gamblers. The article mainly focuses on Gray’s marketing ventures in the pornography business – a legal enterprise in all 50 states. The article states that Leach and Gray have been friends for at least two years.

The premise for the article is captured in it’s first paragraph:

Washington State’s new head coach Mike Leach is well known for his unconventional approach on the football field. But what’s less well known is the way that delightful disdain for the status quo seems to extend off the field as well, where Leach has partnered with the publisher of a series of Houston-area strip-club guides to put on a college all-star game.

The only other mention of the relationship is referenced here:

While it’s unclear when Leach and Gray first met, they’ve known each for at least two years. On December 3, 2009, Gray and a number of Leach’s friends, including his personal attorney, surprised him with gifts in the Texas Tech locker room a few weeks after the coach had broken the record for most wins in school history.

Your logic appears to be if X is friends with Y, and if Y does Z then X must also do Z. This is flawed logic at it’s finest.

I am questioning the logic of your post. You made the accusation, so I am asking you to defend your comments.

You assume that because Leach is lending his name to a college all-star event that he is in some fashion involved in the porn industry. Let’s pursue this logic further.

Here is a link to the Casino del Sol All Star Game.

Who are the organisers?

Joe Dan Rogers – Rogers has spent the last several seasons with St Vincent Sports Performance in Indianapolis handling elite performance and the NFL Pre-combine Program.

The former Executive Director for the Hula Bowl has had a diverse career in football. Prior to joining the Hula Bowl, Rogers was a scout for the Atlanta Falcons which featured 2002 NFC Championship game where the Falcons were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles.

As an assistant coach Rogers spent time with Alabama, TCU, Brown and Middle Tennessee State. Rogers earned 2 letters as a defensive back for the Oklahoma Sooners and was Academic All Big 12 in 1997. Rogers and his wife Courtney reside in Atlanta with their 2 young daughters.

Did Joe Dan Rogers mention young daughters? Gasp.

Mike Feder, VP & General Manager of the Tucson Padres, brings nearly three decades of baseball executive management experience. He is currently the Managing Partner of Tucson Triple-A Baseball, LLC (Tucson Padres). Feder was the VP/GM of the Tucson Sidewinders and Tucson Toros from 1989 – 2000. In 2001 he went to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints for five years as Director of Regional Sales & Marketing.
Mike’s more recent Tucson positions included the Executive Director of the Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority (PCSTA), and Executive Director of the Tucson Police Foundation. He has made a tremendous commitment to the Tucson community in his 16 years in town. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Tucson Police Foundation, Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau (MTCVB), Father’s Day Council, and Handmaker Foundation. He is also a member of the Caballeros Del Sol. The bottom line is that he believes in Tucson and will do anything need to give back to his community!
Feder also received some local recognition: in 1998 he was inducted into Pima County Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1997 received the Conquistadors Award for long and meritorious service to the Tucson sports community.

Hand-what Foundation?!? Do “anything” to help the Tuscon community!?!

What kind of miscreants are coaching this Festival of Filth?

Houston Nutt

The Stars squad will be coached by former Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt. Nutt is three time SEC Coach of the Year at Arkansas and University of Mississippi and sports a 135-95 lifetime headcoaching record to go along with two Cottonbowl Crowns.

Pat Hill

The Stripes squad will be led by former Frenso State head coach Pat Hill, who brings both NFL and college experience to the sidelines. He coached the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns prior to coaching 15 years at Fresno state, where he guided the Bulldogs to an 112-80 record and eleven bowl games in 15 seasons.

And just who is sponsoring this Debacle of Debauchery?

The leading sponsors include: Nike, Hertz, Pizza Hut, Miller Lite, Arizona Daily Star, Fox Sports Arizona, Tuscon Hispanic among others.

Surely no player would participate in this Celebration of Sin?

Players represent most of the top Division I schools in the country.

What is the Casino del Sol?

Let’s add gambler to the list of accusations. (PS: Apparently, weddings are also held at this venue. Good God!)

Let us, based on your logic, accuse any and all participants in this college football All-Star Game as pornographers who suffer from “sexual impulses.”

Please defend your logic of equating Leach’s participation in a college football All Star game, friendship with someone whose morals you question, equate to him suffering from “sexual impulses” – a phrase with which I am unfamiliar. by Arizona Raider on Jan 19, 2012 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

I'll assume this is a partial response to question number one

If this is the case, your logic only appears to apply to morally ambiguous circumstances.

If X is friends with Y, and Y does Z, then X most also condones /participate/ agrees with Z.

According to your logic, this argument does not, however, apply to relationships in which morality issues are less evident (i.e. Donald Trump, Pete Carroll, John Wooden, Spike Dykes, Urban Meyer and other notable public relationships).

This is quite a high moral standard, albeit logically flawed and applicable in very subjective circumstances.

What, say, are your views on Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama – who, among many other things, share the common experience of admitting to using drugs and alcohol during their youth? [not a political question, I’m just making sure I understand WTS’s logic.]

What are your views on other public figures or leaders who have been extremely successful, but may have exhibited behaviors that you find morally questionable?

Or perhaps does this logic only apply to one Mike Leach, in which case the aim of your initial comments are observable and more than a little transparent?

I think the problem is that there are a lot of assumptions being made about to what extent Leach is a business partner and how much Leach knows of Ford’s business. No where in the article does it say that Leach knows about Ford’s current business, approves of it and condones it. It also doesn’t say whether or not that if Leach found out about Ford’s business that he severed any and all ties with Ford. You are just making a lot of assumptions about a person and you have no idea whether or not Leach has disassociated himself with Ford once he knew.

Ok let me walk through my logical process step by step.

Deductive reasoning:

1.)ML is very intelligent. In 1986, Leach earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Pepperdine University School of Law. (So, I can assume ML is very intelligent.. Not only is he intelligent but he is also a lawyer.)

So, can I assume ML is a very smart man? I think it would be safe to say so. I mean he did create the air raid offense as well.

2.) It has been established ML is very intelligent and is also a lawyer. Do I think I could assume based on this information that he would be very wise about his business dealings, who they represent, and what they do for a living?

I think that it would be save to say that. But then again that is just my opinion and my deductive reasoning.

So, yes I do assume ML knows of their business dealings. If he didn’t he would be very naive.

"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."

by westtxscrub on Jan 19, 2012 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

Your deductive reasoning is still assumptions and assumptions about a person’s character are usually bad. You also don’t know if he has ceased business dealings with him. I checked the Arizona corporate search and the LLC, “Arizona Sports Group, LLC” doesn’t come up in a search, so maybe we could assume that once Leach found out about Ford, he had the company dissolved.

You can ask anyone here, I’ve been fairly contentious when it comes to people making assumptions about others and have done it to both sides.

There is no doubt that DTN is slanted, but you’re going to find that just about everywhere. I’ll let people post and say what they want for the most part rather than moderate what they can or cannot say. As long as they stay within the rules, I’ll let people voice their opinion, even if I disagree with it.

I don’t agree with pissing on someone’s grave and I don’t agree that assumptions about a person’s character should be made. I’m complicated that way.

From Wikipedia.
Deductive reasoning, also called deductive logic, is reasoning which constructs or evaluates deductive arguments. Deductive arguments are attempts to show that a conclusion necessarily follows from a set of premises or hypotheses. A deductive argument is valid if the conclusion does follow necessarily from the premises

So, deductive reasoning is valid. From the information I had on hand about ML it was fair to come to my opinion.

"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."

by westtxscrub on Jan 19, 2012 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

Okay, but it still requires an assumption, from Wikipedia, emphasis mine:

Hypothesis: In a related but distinguishable usage, the term hypothesis is used in formal logic for the antecedent of a proposition; thus in the proposition “If P, then Q”, P denotes the hypothesis (or antecedent); Q can be called a consequent. P is the assumption in a (possibly counterfactual) What If question.

WTS Response: Please stop with the personal attacks. You all suffer from group think.

This pattern should be apparent after 250 responses to a post about a topic that WTS initially found to be inappropriate, and later replaced with another post that he/she believed to be more appropriate.

When WTS is asked to defend the post and its premise, WTS instead claims that he/she is being personally attacked.

If you were talking about a coach that only won 5 conference games over the course of his 2 years, then I would agree with you. While your premise is sound regarding alumni, it is not regarding coaches

in every case. My father played in the early 40’s at Tech and is forever talking about Pete Cawthon. Pete did not attend or graduate from Tech, however his forever linked to Texas Tech College for his time spent here. I would say the same goes for Carlin, Dykes, Sloan, Leach and even McWilliams to some degree. Tech is not a big statue builder and certainly would most likely never erect one for a football coach and even more especially one in particular, but look at OU. Barry Switzer is forever linked as is Bud Wilkenson.

But I still contend that Alumni have more connection to schools than coaches. We cheer through the good and the bad. We contribute monetarily. We invest in future children, educators, researchers, doctors, lawyers, military men/women, and community leaders.

A football coach is only paid to do one thing. Win football games. But, it is true what you said. We do have some rare gems that contribute to the community/players just as much as coaching, like Spike Dykes.

by blackbeard on Jan 19, 2012 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

Correct, using the term “partners” is not accurate either. Essentially, in a LLC, you have members (shareholders in a corp.), then managers (board of directors) and then officers (like a President or VP). You would have to subpoena the record book to find out who is the owner of a LLC. If Leach was also a member with Gray, then you could say that he owned a membership interest in the LLC and is akin to you owning 50 shares in Starbucks, Inc. or whatever. A manager simply entitles that person to decide who is an officer of the LLC.

…. winningest coaches are in every one of them. I would argue that coaches are 10 times more invested in the university they are coaching for at any given moment than any of the players they are coaching at a given moment. When a coach becomes the winningest coach in a programs history, it is safe to assume that no single player ever comes close to have invested the amount of themselves to that school as that coach has.

I read it

and all I got was that Leach has a business relationship with Gray in nothing that relates to porn in any way. I am not worried about it, the current business deal, but Leach should probably let this relationship expire.

Now here is a real story from Lubbock and Tech…Oh, somewhere about 1970, through a friend, I met a relatively cool guy, ex-Nam vet and artistic kind of guy. We hung out a bit. Visiting his garage apartment one night, he showed me his collection of Playboy magazines. Big deal..not.

At one time, he and his biz. partner used my ex-wife, then girlfriend, as a model for a cosmetic line promotion in West Texas. Purely legit and innocent. (my daughters were impressed that Mom looked so good, way back when)

After that, he and his artist business partner decided to move to California and seek their fortune. I bought a modern art picture from the partner for $100 (it was 1971 and that was a lot of my tips earned from the La Fonda del Sol restaurant). And that was the end of our connection.

Decades later, I find out via google that this guy had become a porn actor and later producer and was a significant ‘player’ in that ‘industry’ prior to his death.

So, does that make me a porn person and my ex-wife the former model of a porn star/director? Does it mean that we shared the same values even though I hung with the guy a while?
Obviously, I think not.

Birds of a feather may indeed flock together for a while, but it certainly does not mean they are of the same stripe. And yes, after 41 years, the painting I bought from the artist/partner (Eric Barber/Tech student) still hangs on my wall. It isn’t porn and I am not tainted by whatever the unnamed one and Eric did or did not do in their lives.

And that is a true story.

A publisher can be good and have good publications – but that doesn’t mean all of them are. In my opinion, people who live in the area a LOCAL paper is circulated are a good judge/barometer of the paper.

As you’ve seen on this post, a handful of folks question whether the Observer is a good publication. You think it is. Doesn’t make you right. Doesn’t make you wrong. Same is true for those of us on the flip side.

Useful definition while filtering through 200+ messages appearing out of left field suddenly

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,2 extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response3 or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.4 The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: “That was an excellent troll you posted”.
While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions and harassment outside of an online context.

And no matter how outrageous the charge, you have to be cautious in case it turns out to be true

I’m pretty sure I saw Leach & Dana Holgerson in the background in one of the 1st Girls Gone Wild DVD’s. Maybe my eyes were just playing tricks on me.

I don't think you read the above correct.

To my defense I was asked a personal question, to which I gave me opinion. It was off topic and maybe I should have responded by saying. “You need to ask a better question.” So, to be being challenged…..I can only laugh at that.

It just show me more and more Double T Nation has “some” posters that really are quite ridiculous. Your only defense to the article is to try to assassinate my personal character. So, are we into slander now at Double T Nation? Being called a “troll” by mbrown603 and such is really showing me you guys maturity level. It’s a shame really. Double T Nation is/was a good place.

by westtxscrub on Jan 19, 2012 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'm breaking a rule of never engaging directly with one - As in "Don't Freed The ...."

So let me start by saying that if you are not deliberately engaging in troll behavior, let me tell you that you have a real gift for it & may want to consider taking it up professionally. 18 years on internet message boards has given me the following watchouts for trolling. Check them to see if any apply here.

1. Make a statement so outrageous that you know it will create a shitstorm of controversy.
2. Never let a single reply to you go unreplied in return. This is called “feeding the fire”.

  1. is why I really try not to address a Troll directly, because that just helps him fuel the fire further. But I got all choked up over your wounded dignity here that I felt I should address it directly. I won’t be replying a second time, so have a field day with this one.

I was doing way too much clean living

that’s why I got on DTN, to get to know people like you, KWash, and blackbeard of course. I think it’s working. I’m turning cynical and swearing more. But if I start to grow a beard like yours – it is definitely time for an intervention!

I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain

I pride myself on a good beard. I keep it groomed and looking terrific.

But the downside to all this is the fact that I’ve been sleeping with my hairdresser for the past 12 years. Now, you’re all associated with that (my wife cuts my hair, yet not a hairdresser). As long as we’re making factual statements, amiright?

Case and point. I had to bury a dear friend yesterday. I rode with this man, built a few bikes for him and enjoyed drinking beer and hanging out. He died from a heroin overdose. I don’t do drugs and never will. Does this make me a bad person, having known him?

I love blanket statements. They fix everything and make me right.

PS – not directed at Austin, just venting my frustration.

Oh, KWash, I'm so, so sorry.

You are one of the nicest, most sincere people I’ve met (via DTN, facebook & email) who clearly holds family and friends dear. Loving our friends who have struggles, and let’s face it, who doesn’t, is part of what defines a good friend in my mind. Your friend was lucky to have you. Again, I’m very sorry for your loss.

Or, you are not any of the following things:

nice
tame
sober
an example to anyone for good behavior

How’s that???!!

here is a little pirate humor

from a Dallas kid close to death that got a lung transplant.
http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/health/120116-not-even-thieves-could-take-childs-gift-of-life

It is on the video at the 2:35 mark, but you should hear the whole story.

The joke is funner to hear him tell it, but here it is:

Pirate Captain walks into a bar and he has a Helm in his pants. Bartender asks him “why is there a helm in your pants”? Captain says, “I know, it’s driving me nuts”.

Hey all, I’m going to be busy for the rest of the day and I’m going to be away from any computer tomorrow as I’ll be in CLE. So, it appears that the discussion has somewhat devolved and if we can’t figure to either let things go and let people have their opinion (even if you disagree with them or if it appears that they are based off of assumptions!), I’m going to close the comments on this FanShot because I won’t be able to moderate anything tomorrow.

Please don’t make me do this.
