DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2012-01-20
WHAT'S THE DEAL, PART I | For those of you in the dark, it would be succinct to say that this FanShot got out of hand and there were some that contributed mightily to it getting out of hand. I said this as the last comment, but here's the deal, sometimes it's okay to let things go because you will not always be able to win the internet. Sometimes you will not be able to convince someone that you are right and at some point, you just need to let things go. So even though I asked you all to try to clean things up, the bickering continued and forced me to close the comments. So consider this your warning, everyone is on thin ice. Don't care if you've been around a long time or just a couple of days. I don't need extra headaches in my life. And I also asked (not a rule) that we actually discuss football in this post and it worked out pretty well. Don't get me wrong, I had to give two warnings, but I'll take it. Sometimes I get the impression that you all would rather not talk about what happens on the field and court. I know that DTN sometimes encompasses all things Texas Tech, but if you all can't handle those types of conversations and be mature about them, then I may stop any conversation that's not about what happens on the court or field. I've always been lenient about what you can write, but I'm more interested in being a writer than being a baby-sitter. Now, it's your choice.
WHAT'S THE DEAL, PART II | You've probably noticed by now that DTN has a new logo. I'm going to try to write something up over the weekend to explain why. It's sorta complicated and involves trademark and copyright issues, some of which are still not resolved. Again, it's more complicated than I just wanted a new logo, although I am glad that the response is positive as I somewhat obsessed over how it looked and probably went through too many drafts.
ODDS AND ENDS | Texas Tech owns all of the meat.
TEXAS TECH TRACK AND FIELD | I don't keep up with a lot of the track stuff, but Texas Tech will host their second meet of the year. See the link for details.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | The previews continue, this time it's Florida Gulf Coast.
RED RAIDER SOFTBALL | Per the official site, the Red Raider softball team is picked 7th in the conference this year. They finished 8th last year.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | LAJ's David Just writes that the team is staying positive despite having three conference losses. Here's G Casey Morris:
"We will pick back up and we will stay positive and beat the next team we play and the next team after that," junior guard Casey Morris said after the loss. "We’re not going to hang our heads. We are going to keep playing hard."
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | I very much enjoyed this RaiderPower video of assistant head coach Chris Walker. Good to know him as a human being. LAJ's Nick Kosmider writes that the team is still staying positive despite the 0-5 current losing streak and head coach Billy Gillispie said that he knew what the team would be facing:
"We knew what we were in for before we started," Gillispie said. "We have faced really good teams and the Big 12 is a really good conference, and it’s going to continue for 18 games. I don’t see any lack of confidence, but that’s an individual thing. You only know how a guy appears to be. You don’t really know how a guy is feeling.
"These guys are young, trying to get better and they’re improving dramatically, but not — so far — good enough to win Big 12 games."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | A couple of notes before we get to some other things. Turfburner's Jay Beck has the early list of players invited to the NFL draft combine and no Texas Tech players got an invite. I know that we've had some discussion about what type of talent is on the field and we've had the discussion that the recruiting ranks have been the same as in previous years, and I've just thought that the talent looked sub-par. I think it's probably a combination of both, but I think Texas Tech has had one invite to the NFL combine in the past two years, DT Colby Whitlock. I know that this isn't definitive of much of anything as Baron Batch was drafted, but not invited to the combine, but just something to think about.
LAJ's Don Williams has an editorial and an article on former Red Raider Mike Smith, who was recently named the defensive coordinator for West Virginia. You're going to roll your eyes, but I enjoyed the editorial, especially this part:
No matter how much Smith loves the Jets — and he loves them a lot — Holgorsen played a card the NFL couldn’t. Smith’s goal is to be a head coach in college. Head coach at Texas Tech is his dream. To get on that career track, he needed WVU as much as the Mountaineers needed him. He needs to recruit, needs to be in the college game.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL RECRUITING | There are quite a few recruiting rankings out there, but I wanted to play the game of "guess the player" Here are the stats and I'll give you the three players, Reginald Davis, Dominique Wheeler and Keenon Ward:
Player A: 85.7 Passing YPG; 13 Passing TDs and 1 INT; 190.2 Rushing YPG; 31 Rushing TDs.
Player B: 71.0 Passing YPG; 5 Passing TDs and 4 INT; 166.3 Rushing YPG; 16 Rushing TDs.
Player C: 143.9 Passing YPG; 24 Passing TDs and 5 INT; 136.8 Rushing YPG; 35 Rushing TDs.
Discussion is after the jump.
Obviously you can look up the stats for each player, but I've always wondered why players are more highly rated than others. If I had to choose, I'd say that Player A might be the best player of the bunch, followed by Player C and then Player B. I know that everyone says that this class hinges greatly on whether or not Wheeler keeps his commitment, but here's the players:
Keenan Ward (YouTube) | Player A: 85.7 Passing YPG; 13 Passing TDs and 1 INT; 190.2 Rushing YPG; 31 Rushing TDs.
Dominique Wheeler (YouTube) | Player B: 71.0 Passing YPG; 5 Passing TDs and 4 INT; 166.3 Rushing YPG; 16 Rushing TDs.
Reginald Davis (YouTube) | Player C: 143.9 Passing YPG; 24 Passing TDs and 5 INT; 136.8 Rushing YPG; 35 Rushing TDs.
And you could argue that Ward is playing against the better competition and has better stats, but he's the lowest rated player. I've never argued that recruiting rankings mean everything, but I do think that there is something to the idea that Ward is a player that is tough for these scouts to take a look at because he's in the middle of West Texas rather than in East Texas. Again, to average almost 200 yards rushing a game is pretty amazing, and I'm not saying that Wheeler and Davis aren't deserving of their rankings, but Ward isn't a slouch and I think that he's comparable to the type of athlete of both Davis and Wheeler.
Dave Campbell's has a look at the early entrants in the college ranks, high school players and JUCO's. They've got a few things incorrect on the JUCO write-up, but I liked reading about the other teams.
RRS.com's Mike Graham has the story about Texas Tech commit DT J.J. Bynum changing his name from Bynum to Loller. I'd encourage you to read the whole thing, it's worth it.
Via the mothership, Spencer Hall has your recruiting glossary while Bill Connelly explains conference realignment.

Yeah... I definitely rolled my eyes...
have you guys seen the clip where Smith tries to remember how many feet are in five yards? Dude’s the reason we have a concussion rule these days.
Don’t get me wrong, loved him as a player… not really interested in him as an HC.
I would hate to discount a guy that has had a concussion. Smith seems to be a guy that is well thought of.

Mike Smith
is a great guy, great Red Raider, and great representative of Lubbock. He’s going to do some great things at WVU.
Did I mention that he was great?

The concussion comment was intended to be sarcastic...
I’m just not convinced he’s that bright of a guy, and the number 1 criterion for a great head coach in my mind is MENSA level intelligence.
On a more salient note… I thought he was headed to WSU to coach with Leach. Did I miss something?
We wanted him a lot but the Jets counter offered and he backed out.
But I think he was going to be a linebackers coach at WSU and he really wanted more, like the co DC which WVU offered.
Ward, Wheeler and Davis
had 82 touchdowns among the three of them……………that’s a good thing. Points wins games. Lots of points win lots of games.

No player to combine
I am amazed at the discussion of talent level at Tech. It has to be due to the coaching change and used as a deflection. It is painfully obvious the 2007 and 2008 classes just weren’t that good. What little we got from the 2007 class left after the 2010 season. 2008 gave us a 4 year starter at S, a decent CB for 1.5 years after we gave up on trying to make him a WR, a couple of OL who haven’t exactly blown away the competition, a backup WR, and a K who finally had a good season last year as a SR.
That isn’t the entire reason for the 5-7 season, but it doesn’t make sense to ignore it or act like that wasn’t the case. The 2009 class looks a little better while the 2010 and 2011 classes look a lot better.
I’m not really surprised about none being invited to the combine this year. The overall body of work among the seniors was pretty piss poor. I think Crawford may have an outside chance of getting some looks late possibly. I think if your a senior on a team with a losing record it’s a hard sell or harder for people to find you among the heap. I agree that 2008 was probably our weakest class in recent times.
I also tend to think we hard several players that are better than advertised but missed their opportunity with all the changes among the defensive coaching and schemes. I thought Brian Duncan and some others were victims of this.

2008 was not really that bad... problem was we only had 16 scholarships to offer...
Of the 16: 3 were 4-star, 10 were 3-star, 3 were 2-star (per Rivals)
The 3 2-stars were Carona, Cody Davis and Zouzalik…
Not too bad… the problem was it was such a small class…

The stars are nice for those guys.
What did they contribute on the field their junior and senior seasons ?
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Probably less than they would've without the drastic program changes these past 2 yrs...
A few of them will be seniors next year…
One of them was our starting quarterback last year…

RHS... Agree that 2007 and 2008 classes have not turned out that great for us...
But your characterization of the 2008 class seems to indicate some bias or hidden agenda…
For comparison, the current Tech recruiting class has 3 4-stars, 19 3-stars and 2 2-stars (per Rivals)…
Granted, the larger number of recruits in the class should provide a higher probablility that we get more players who will be able to contribute…
But the TALENT level of the class looks about the same as that of the 2008 class…

While 2007 and 2008 were not outstanding classes
there were a number of great finds
2007 included Bront Bird (NFL), Aaron Crawford, Jacoby Franks, Daniel Howard, Detron Lewis, Colby Whitlock, Tramain Swindell and Brandon Sharpe
2008 included Seth Doege, Cornilias Douglas, Harrison Jeffers, Austin Zouzalik, and Cody Davis.
I'm not the King of Porn,
but I know who is.
This got me thinking about past classes and "starts"
The following players were ranked at 3 stars or less:
Brandon Williams, Lyle Leong, Brian Duncan, Barron Batch, Ed Britton, Brandon Carter, Louis Vasquez, Danny Ammendola, Darcel McBath, Eric Morris, Dwayne Slay, Key Dawson, Joel Filani, Jarret Hicks, Kyle Hudler, and Shannon Woods.
I just think that winning games does not equate to “star” quality necessarily
"you just need to find your inner pirate" ML
Completely forgot about Bird. My thought was not that there are not talented players, but that TTU players are not being asked to go to the combine which I thought was strange. Edwards and Smith I thought were locks and I think they have a chance to get drafted.

LondonRaider concurs with Blackbeard's post (AKA Black Bear)
Also, the list shows 24 Big 12 invitees. There were 10 Big 12 teams (?) last year.
Using back of the envelope math, I assume the following:
Big 12 Teams: 10
Average Roster size per team: 100 (I think it’s larger, but whatever)
Percent of Eligible Juniors and Seniors: 50%
Doing the math means that there are roughly a pool of 500 eligible players from which NFL teams can invite.
Those 24 players represent 4.8% of the eligible players.
Let’s break this list down by school (Number of invitees followed by 2012 Team Record)
6: OU: (10-3)
5: TAMU: (7-6)
4: UT: (8-5)
3: OSU: (12-1)
2: BU: (10-3)
2: ISU: (6-7)
2: MU: (8-5)
0: TTU: (5-7)
0: KU: (2-10)
0: KSU: (10-3)
From these lists we can see that is it hard to draw solid conclusions.
TAMU and OU both have a similar number of invitations, yet OU’s season was much more successful than TAMU’s season.
TTU, KU and KSU have no players represented at the combine, yet KSU finished 10-3 while KU and TTU finished at the bottom of the conference.
OSU only had 3 invitees yet somehow finished as one of the top three teams in the country.
One reasonable conclusion that can be drawn is that success in the NFL does not necessarily correlate with success in college. If so, TAMU and UT should have been much more successful, and KSU should have joined TTU and KU at the bottom of the rankings.
(I should also note that RGIII and Blackmon were not included in this list – yet).
To be successful in college football, you have to make sure that the other 95.2% your players are good enough and consistent enough to perform at a high level in college. Those guys need coaching.
Another observation is that the "most talented" of these Big 12 schools send no more than about 1% of the eligible Big 12 players to the NFL in any given year.
NFL representation (and if we want to get more technical, those players who actually perform at the NFL level) is not really representative of success at the college level.
Would I prefer to see more Tech players in the NFL? Sure.
If that means we become more like TAMU? The answer is no.
Would I prefer for us to perform more like KSU instead of more like, well, us? Yes.

Never could figure out how you could run past the play over and over again.
If his job was to get the QB’s and RB’s to run up the middle, it worked. Problem was, nobody was ever in the middle.

Great story about Lollar. Hadn’t thought of powerlifting as a high school sport and its skill transfer to football. The high school wrestling analogy was evident with Whitlock and his ability to shed offensive line blocks. Remember the 2-0 start 11/1/08? Still laugh at some of the images of that game. The one with Mack Brown’s neck veins about to burst is one of the top 2 or 3 images that still stick with me.

Here is something that I just picked up from The Evil Empire; good days are ahead.
In the last five years we did not have one single ESPN 150 player. This year we will have three, which will probably be the best ever for Tech as far as I can remember, which is short term these days.

ESPN rankings where remotely correct
Below are the top 10 recruiting classing in 2008 … figure 1 year redshirt that means this year
Miami should have one it all ?
The U finished 52nd and Clemson 32nd … It doesn’t matter what kinda talent you recruit .. if you don’t have a coach \ players and mentors that can teach “character” and “personal accountability” ….
The one thing that makes me proud is that under the ML days we can look @ his players and coaches and never worry about seeing someone in the press for beating his wife or player getting arrest for not pulling his pants up in a shopping mall…. you couldn’t say that under the Spike Dikes or Tubs …..
ESPN 150 2008
1. Miami (Fla.) 12 32
2. Clemson 10 25
3. Alabama 7 32
4. Florida 11 23
5. Georgia 8 24
6. Ohio State 8 20
7. USC 10 20
8. Oklahoma 8 21
9. Notre Dame 10 23
10. Texas 8 19

Looks like if you miss one day on here you miss a lot
I hate to see people fighting on here. We all have differing opinions about everything, but we also all love Texas Tech and are very passionate about its sports programs. I respect the passion, but long for the days when we were a unified fan base focusing our contempt and hatred on deserving institutions (A&M, UT, everyone not named Texas Tech). I believe we will become this united fan base once more, but I do not think it will be a short or easy road. I hope that when we are that united fan base in the future it is behind a successful football program.
I fully support Tubs and wish him nothing but success this next year. I fully supported/support Leach, as I will fully support the next coach at Texas Tech if Tubs cannot get it done. I do not agree with how the administration has behaved the past couple of years, and pray they make it up to us and get us to Tier 1. For the record, I can’t figure out how close we are to obtaining that. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information.
None of this is directed at anyone, nor intended to make anyone change their ways. It is primarily to make myself feel better and to get myself back in check. I love Texas Tech University and will continue to do so until my last breath. Wreck ‘Em Tech.

Stars, Ratings & Logo
My point of view on Star Rating HS Players is coming from TCU, and that’s where my perspective is coming from. I am not showing bias, because I am a Raider, however they have proved with “supposed” minimal rated talent, a school of that size can be a winner. So it begs the question(s) – is it really the talent of the player? or the coaching up, or putting a player in a different position to be successful?
You could argue the weaker schedule because of conference, but you could say the same about Boise St, which almost parallels the Frogs.
This is where I have to hold Tommy ultimately responsible for the development of our players and program. The beauty pageant of recruits in his tenure is fantastic, however it’s just not translating on the field.

Great logo Seth. It’s a nice change.
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
Agreed plus the "star rating" stuff is questionable...
I think there are the top 5-10% who are true blue-chips…almost certain to become multi-year starters with a good chance of being stand-outs and with a shot to play on Sundays. Then there are all the other kids who may or may not make it depending on their motivation, potential, staying healthy and getting in the right program with the right coaches. We are not going to get many of those real true blue recruits, so we better figure out how to get the best of the rest and then get the best out of them. Coaching matters.
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
Is the beauty pageant of recruits in his tenure really that fantastic?
I know it sounds good to say we had a top 20 recruiting class in 2011 & as of today we are sitting at #25 for 2012 according to Rivals.com….but there are many variables that go into the ranking system. One of which is the more committments you have the more points have. The more points the higher the ranking. The numerical ranking of the classes is an indicator of the strength of the class…..but more interesting is to see the strength of the individual recruit. I took the average star rating of each class….and compared to the average star rating among the Big 12 schools to see how we ranked.
Year………..Total……….Avg Stars……….Conf Rank
2012………..25………………3.04………………….7
2011………..27………………3.15………………….3
2010………..25………………3.00………………….7
2009………..25………………3.00………………….5
2008………..16………………3.00………………….6
2007………..26………………2.73………………….6
2006………..34………………2.88………………….5
A few things I found interesting. Some have said that Leach basically quit recruiting his last few years….so the quality of the athlete that Tuberville inherited was less than previous years. Hence the reason for the less than stellar results the last two years. If you believe the Rivals ratings then the quality of the individual recruit actually improved in Leach’s last few years. Some have touted the significant improvements to our recruiting since Tuberville has been here. There has been an increase in the average star rating……but in comparison to the conference we haven’t improved. The 2 lowest rankings in comparison to the other teams in the conference since 2006 have occurred in the last 3 years (assuming this years class doesn’t change).
Looking at it this way maybe the beauty pageant of recruits really isn’t that much different than the previous years.
My take
I think there is some merit to the rating systems but it’s not full proof that a 3-4 star kid is going to be a great athlete. I tend to think the best athletes are the ones that come in that have heart and passion for the game. Also, it has to be a good fit. Plenty of athletes go for the ND and UT’s based on popularity and the NSD hype that goes with it when they really don’t fit the offense or defense that a school runs with.
A smart kid with a strong will to play will seek out his best option of starting early and finding a school that fits his level of play. A good recruiter might have the same objectives.
I don’t Leach ever quit recruiting for Tech even in his last few years. Leach was a guy who found talent that fit his ideal of Tech. Present day, I think it’s no longer that way since our identity is a mixed bag. The star ratings may have gone up which is good but our ability to shoe horn those athetes into the mix and develop them is what’s lacking.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
OGW... I agree with much of what you are saying....
I just don’t buy the story that Leach didn’t recruit decent players his last few years…
It looked to me that his recruiting was on an upward trend with the exception of a year here or there…
I just don’t believe the talent level is an acceptable excuse for our performance the past two years… I think the talent level was similar to what Leach had worked with several years previously… I think the problems were based on coaching, change of scheme and injuries… in addition to injuries, we lost some players because they just left the program (or were churned from it)…
However… I do think the 2011 recruiting class was a significant notch above anything Leach ever brought in… This year looks to be off a bit, but still pretty solid… the star numbers don’t look that much better than in the past, but I think some of the position ratings are pretty high (higher than we used to get —> example being the 3 guys that are currently listed on the ESPN 150).. hopefully, we can hold on to the current class…
Next year is going to be critical in several ways… If we perform again like we did this year, the best recruiter in the world is going to have a hard time getting kids to want to come to Tech… I think we have already seen some effects on our current class…

what is becoming clear — doesn’t matter how good your recruiting is if you can’t teach football skills to what is still basically 18-20 year old minds of mush…
but … the next comment will be

Seth, ya you had me
a tad confused for a moment with the logo thing. Thought I was on the Monterey Plainsmen site for a sec.

I loved coach Crutcher
Extremely intense and got results

Remember Coach Odom
from my HS days. He was a nice man and gave me a ride home from school one day (before I got my first car). Pretty intense on the practice field, though, and his teams won a lot of games.
QB Controversy
I am sure I will get banned for not giving a sieg heil to Seth’s greatness, but unlike the past 10 years, most Red Raider fans have no idea who is competing for the starting job at QB. And unlike the luxury of Jason Campbell et al, Tommy Tuberville does need to find a QB for Tech to be successful next season. Who should he choose at QB?
Seth Doege is the starter until we learn otherwise...

Zebbie, Robert, Aaron and Billy Joe
Since we are leaving one era and entering another, the idea of where to find the next QB is interesting. Zebbie Lethredge, Robert Hall, Aaron Kesee (Ballinger Coach now) and Billy Joe Tolliver are the types we will likely return to. Do we have anyone in that mold, and which of the Leach QBs can adjust most efficiently to the Tuberville offense?
Lake Travis or Denton
Aside from Mr. Doege from Crane (SW Lubbock cannot truly claim him), which QB fits?
George Strait logo
Patent and copyright lawyers beware, the new Double T Nation logo is a play off the George Strait song. This Is Where the Cowboy Rides Away . . . and my heart is sinking like the setting sun . . . but seriously, what arrogance makes anyone here believe they know that Doege will be QB for Tuberville? Tech is SLOWING the game down and may win doing it, but who is the QB?
