TTU #2 in returning starters out of FBS schools
Saw this Phil Steele article via Ubben on ESPN, out of all 120+ FBS schools Tech ranks 2nd in returning starters. If this isn't Tubervilles best chance to do something in the Big 12 then its no question we should be looking for a new coach in 2013. I do think we will have a pretty nice season, hopefully at least 8 regular season wins. I think if he gets 8 wins he stays, although we should expect at least 9 with how the Big 12 is going to be this year, but expectations are a lot lower then they used to be. Barring injuries which have been a killer for us under Tuberville, I don't see why we cant compete for the Big 12 title this year. Also having UT/OU at home doesn't hurt

I was going to write a separate post on this, but just didn’t get around to it over the weekend. Anyway, this just didn’t seem right, but I don’t know.
We know that Lonnie Edwards is gone as well as Justin Keown, and you could make the case that Mickey Okafor could have been a starter, he was for a good chunk of the year. Adam James started, as we all are too much aware.
Scott Smith was the only other guy, that I could think of on the defense that started most of the year, you could maybe add Donald Langley as a starter, but I can’t recall how many games he actually started.
So that’s 4 to 6 starters right there, with Okafor and Langley being questionable. Am I missing anyone?
Also feel free to click on Phil Steele since he did the list if you would prefer not to go to ESPN:

But how good are they?
When you return that many starters and sign 8 JUCO players (most in the BCS)…does it matter how many you return…just sayin’,,,
Yea b/c expierence is key...
Don’t forget that even when some of these guys were playing they werent fully healthy, if this team stays healthy, I don’t see one team that can beat us
seriously?
Not one team can beat us? Iowa state made us their bitch at home, but we are that close to perfection. Good to know.

Yea we could lose all games, or we couldnt. I see us going 8-4 w/beating tems we shouldn’t and having 2 or 3 real bad games. Houston raider u sound miserably pessimistic, I understand, u think the same team u watched all of 2011 will be the same team u will see this year, that’s just retarded. R we going to be going for a NC b/c the way u answered that made me sound like that’s what I was saying and I wasn’t. I do think we could get 9 wins in regular season then people like u will forget all about this Convo here and you’ll be claiming u said it all along, 8 regular season wins most likely though
"he said he doesn't see one team that can beat us"
To that comment, we derailed OU at home, remember?? if we can do that LAST YEAR then yea I’ll say it w/confidence that this year WE CAN beat anyone on our schedule any given week, get your negativity outta here

OK... yeah.. I'm probably a little on the pessimistic side...
My optimism/pessimism level is based on what I have seen on the field for the past 2 years…and from watching Tech football since the mid 60’s…
I will agree that we could beat anyone on our schedule on any given week… But that’s not what you originally said that we reacted and responded to… You said that you “don’t see one team that can beat us”… Personally, I think there are several teams that CAN beat us… I hope they don’t… I’ll be cheering for us to win them all… I don’t know…Maybe that makes me “retarded”…
Also, I don’t think you have much of an idea as to what people like me will do or say under any circumstances… you might just save yourself some time and effort in trying to predict such things…

looking at last season:
We progressively got worse as the season went on. The k state loss was our 2nd best game we played in my estimation.
I’m not sure if getting all of those players back is a good thing….as there was surely something that went down that made the effort considerably worse as the season went on (save for ou).
Leaders and playmakers are required for successful teams, it will be an interesting year. I hope hocutt has applied appropriate heat.

I'm optimistic we have so many returning starters
Talk about baptism by fire. I think the players will have learned and developed a lot as a result of this last year, and they won’t want a repeat.
The way Tuberville is talking it sounds like there will be a lot more harmony on the coaching staff which I have to believe will make a positive impact as well.

Seems like every offseason
he has some huge change cooked up that’s gonna win us a national title. First offseason he raved about how he was gonna make us a ‘3-ring circus’ with an NFL defense. Last year it was his stellar recruiting class. Now it’s all the new coaches. When does the BS stop and wins begin?

And who has 15 players require surgery? That was crazy when I read Mike Grahams article about Tech having that many players not only hurt but require surgery. Tub’s in on thin ice so he better produce this year.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
I'm so glad we got the "coaching harmony" issues worked out...
Although, we weren’t really aware there were such issues until we got rid of some of the old coaches…
I wonder if Neal Brown has bought into the new harmonious approach? Things have gone a little silent on that front… it will be interesting to see what’s what after national signing day…
I’m optimistic for next year because:
- We’ve been recruiting more talent (the cupboard isn’t bare anymore…)
- The players won’t be as young and inexperienced.(that means they must be better…)
- We can’t have as many injuries as the past two years (what a crazy fluke that’s been…)
- We will be able to run the ball (you gotta be able to run the ball…)
- We’ve got some new defensive guru’s on the staff (they’ve got to be better than the previous guru’s…)
- We may get OU & UT at home (please disregard our 1 – 6 conference record in Lubbock the past 2 yrs..)
- The ball has got to start bouncing our way… and surely we will start catching some of the breaks…
- The wind is not going to blow (if only we could get that indoor practice facility…)

the poll question was worded funny but i think 8 wins or he should be out
I dont have a say in the matter though… I think a mediocre bowl game will save his job (7 wins), although it shouldn’t… I reposted my thoughts below from November (mid season) on this…
in fact, not going to a bowl game this season may be in his best interest… if he turns it around and goes bowling next year, he gains "momentum"… if he goes mediocre bowling this year… the pressure will be on for a bigger bowl next year.
obviously its the former and not the latter…. worst case scenario for 2012, a 7 win mediocre season… Tubs squeaks by and we are stuck with mediocre…for another year… best case scenario.. the old coaches coach the returning starters UP and we win 10+ (we can always dream). somewhere in the middle is winning 8 or 9 (actually gaining momentum) or 5 again and firing the guy before the seasons over to get the best shot at a fresh start with Dykes or whoever is the next hot coach at that point (see ATM) Sarc font for the last 10 words or so.

F'd in the A
I bet when the schedules get posted, Tech will have to play in Austin. We had to play back to back games in Norman and I see us getting the shaft this year. like usual.
I do not consider the number of wins but the number in conference and the quality of play.
Can’t measure trends by beating TSU and NM. I am sure KH will evaluate the total picture.
I’m kinda with Oldschool on this. It’s really hard to believe that we’ll be any better with the way the season ended. We got progressively worse and that speaks volumes. Injuries did play a part but that is something all teams have to deal with every season.
I do think that Tuberville is feeling the pressure now and that’s a good thing. Tech football has the capability for greatness and quite possibly could win 10 games if the coaching and defense get a whole lot better but if we see the same coaching and the same defense we are shopping for a new coach for 2013. Excuses are running thin.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
But I believe (who knows if it's true or not)
what was said about Glasgow and a couple of other coaches grabbing some of the key players who were celebrating after beating OU and saying the better team lost that day, they shouldn’t be celebrating (or things to that effect), etc., which had a negative impact on them & which they shared with their teammates.
Right after that game is when we went into the horrible cringe-worthy stretch of losses when the team was incredibly, inexplicably flat. These two things add up to me. So I think if you remove the coaching/motivation/tension with players issue (my theory) that has a big impact. Motivation is huge.
If we now have coaches that are on the same page, even better.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain
That may have happened, but I doubt that it could have had such an impact. I tend to think that the whole PR campaign leveraging the big win had more of an insidious impact. More of a WTF moment that caused guys to question whether or not this was about team.

unless you go back to the Houston loss in 09. Leach had lost that team,
but he got them back on track. Maybe Tommy lost team after OU, and it took the last two games to get them back. Something happened. I saw the worst Tech team ever play at Texas this year. You could tell they were just going thru the motions, and so did everyone else in the stands on both sides.

Yep
A bad win is still a win and one against a team like Oklahoma should be celebrated. It was a pivotal moment to get players thinking they’re capable of more than what’s expected. The loss to Iowa State the following week is what sends me over the edge as far as Tuberville’s ability. That was such an ugly loss and one that took place at home after a marquee win against OU on the road. Pure lack of leadership and flat out failure on so many levels. The team only got progressively got worse after that as well.
