ODDS AND ENDS | I haven't said anything about Joe Paterno because I'm not real sure what to say. You can read SB Nation's Spencer Hall and MGoBlog's Brian Cook. Again, I don't really know what to say here as it's a topic that has so many twists and turns that so much of it makes no sense at all, but then it makes all too much sense at other times.
In completely unrelated Odds and Ends, Matthew McConaughey reprises his role as David Wooderson:
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | LAJ's David Just writes that the team will make corrections and remains optimistic. G Chynna Brown said that the team held a meeting and worked out some on the court and off the court issues:
"We have a couple things going on for us off the court with our team," Brown said, "so today we had a little meeting. We sat down in the locker room and just talked. We opened the floor to whoever had something to say and just talked. ... We’re the ones that have to play. They coach us but when it’s time to perform, we’re the ones that have to play. We figured out what we need to do from here on out."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL RECRUITING | This is just something to watch as a lot of high school players talk, but I'm not sure that much, if any, of this will come to fruition. I also want to go on the record as saying that I don't totally understand what I'm about to post, but here goes. In the Spartanburg Herald-Journal (think South Carolina) I found this article that discusses Alabama commit, WR Casey Gladney (Rivals | 24/7 Sports | YouTube). Way back during the summer, Gladney committed to Alabama, but as Roll Bama Roll noted, it was largely contingent on Gladney qualifying, which is apparently still an issue. Anyway, here's what Gladney's high school head coach said yesterday:
Columbia High WR and Alabama commitment Casey Gladney made his official visit to Alabama over the weekend. His coach, Kemper Amick, said the visit went great and Alabama is going to take Gladney if he projects to qualify. If not, they would place him in a prep school in New York. "He has a chance to qualify," Amick said. "But it would be late." However, Texas Tech is coming to the school tomorrow and they want to sign Gladney and take a chance on him qualifying. Tech also would sign his teammate, LB Ky Tyler according to Amick. And Marshall would take those two and another teammate, LB Justin Miller.
So I'm not sure what to think here and I'm not sure if Gladney would flip his commitment if Texas Tech also signed his high school teammate, Ky Tyler (Rivals | 24/7 Sports)? Again, I'm not sure. In Gladney's YouTube, he plays both receiver and defensive back. As far as Tyler, he played quarterback last year, threw for 188 YPG with 31 TD's and 11 INT's while rushing for 96 YPG with 20 TD's. Tyler doesn't have any offers despite exhibiting some nice statistics and that might say something about his grades as well.
The other news that's somewhat news is that there are now a lot of schools in on Texas Tech commit DE Chase Robison, as Tennessee has now come calling as well has Colorado, North Carolina and Louisville. Robison has always had smaller school offers (think Arkansas St.) and Texas Tech as the first large school that offered Robison, but I think that Tennessee has come calling as they're about to lose Dalton Santos to Texas.

I really hope the ladies can turn it around.....
They have been the bright spot in Tech sports up until the losing streak.

Joe Paterno
needs to be remembered for all the good he gave college football. Despite the news of the last few months, his contribution to the game should be everlasting. I have no real idea what had to have gone thru his mind since this last fall, but I’d like to think he merely could not comprehend the actions of Sandusky. Tragic as that is, and as everlasting as those actions will be to the affected, I’m chosing to not dwell on that one mistake, and focus on the the good.

I agree
I tend to think a younger more sound minded coach Paterno would have kicked Sandusky’s ass. IMO I think Paterno was sort of proped up in the last decade. I personally would rather remember him for his legacy on the field.

JP will be remembered according to how people want to lean.
Some will look at the blight first and some will chose to pass it by because of all the good he did kind of thing.
If the Sandusky thing is what we have been led to believe on this blog, it was a lot more than one mistake…..sadly so.
At the end of the day, it reminds me of how much we hunger for heros that are really just driven individuals who are skilled, lucky, and successful because a combination of many things, some greater than the person, some lesser than the person.

Mmm...
Several years ago when he no longer seemed able to handle the rigors of the job (understandably), I remember wondering why he didn’t step aside. There’s no doubt he was a football legend & there won’t be another one like him. But there seem to be a lot of coaches & athletes these days who try to hang on too long.
If Paterno had all his faculties I wonder if the scandal would have played out as it did? Or if Paterno had stepped aside years ago, would a younger, different minded coach picked up on things? Just rhetorical questions to the general thought of whether some legendary coaches & athletes seem to be trying to hang on past their capacity these days.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough. -Mark Twain
Well said
I tend to think coaches like Paterno are a thing of the past. These modern day football coaches today typically don’t hang on with any one school for a very long time anymore. Urban Meyer, Trussell, and a few more have recently left their respective programs for numerous reasons.

I can't help wondering
what Bear Bryant would have done if he found a Sandusky in his locker room. Tend to think he would have kicked his **s personally before calling in the state troopers.
Well....it sure as heck isn't him playing trumpet.

Or the little piano. Cool video, props to Butch Walker and Black Widows.

Props
on posting Butch Walker. One of the greatest singer/songwriters out there. Been around for awhile, but he’s always real with his lyrics.

Everything after
“Last week I wrote about how we cover Texas Tech” was BS.
I don’t think a sentence like “ongoing soap opera that is Mike Leach” shows respect for the head coach of the forgotten decade.
I think I was expecting a bit more. And good catch, I missed that this weekend.

AJ editorial
Just typical damage control—and bad damage control at that. I think of AJ as “prairie dog town Pravda.”
LAJ Editorial
Yeah, it pissed me off. Who do they think they are kidding?
I commented under the name “Lonestar”. They are pretty stream of consciousness so I’m excusing myself from grammar errors, complete sentences, non-sequiturs, etc..
I’ll have to see what’s posted today – only about 4 people had commented yesterday. I’m sure the LAJ will spin that as, “people aren’t really concerned, don’t disagree with our coverage”.

After reading the article
I am even more upset with the thinking at the LAJ. No matter how they present their views, it is very obvious they “prefer” to walk the line while leaning toward the Texas Tech administration. As mentioned often the AJ does not want to “burn any bridges” when it comes to covering Texas Tech. Sure, they provide some columns that are not all Tech praising, but they just seem to never lean the other way of that imaginary line.
After Leach’s two books were released, there is no way any real and honest media outlet could ever support the Tech people involved. I have read in the AJ where Leach was considered a “marginal” coach, unworthy of praise. Marginal coaches do not win the most games at a school in its history.
As for Tuberville, he must take charge and get the team playing up to the level it was at when he was hired. I know he is an experienced coach that boasts a pretty good record, but his choices for coordinators seems to be a bit naive. Hopefully, he has finally reached the point where he really understands what is required to win in the Big XII.
I do hope the LAJ will cover all thing in and around Lubbock in a professional manner, making waves as necessary to stir the waters of truth.

Curry's ability to lead this team
came to my mind after reading what Chynna Brown had to say. Sounds like a lot of “noise” is happening behind the scenes.
An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.
I am happy to read the Chynna Brown comments.
At least it provided some reasonable sounding rational.
Team leadership is critical, no matter who is the coach(es).

IMO ... it's player leadership and power struggles and not coaching
I think this is not a Coaching issue. I think there are some teammate issues going on. Leadership, power struggles and who gets the ball etc.
After the lack of effort and poise in Sunday’s loss to Iowa State — the Cyclones’ first Big 12 Conference win — head coach Kristy Curry isn’t coddling her experienced team.
She called the loss "embarrassing" after the game and said Monday that "we’re not gonna tiptoe around anything. It is what it is. We’ve got to get better, and they understand that."
The players listened.

BTW...
I have give props to one AJ guy. David Just has been doing good work lately. His writing is a nice contrast to the norm there.
Sorry Seth, just can’t help myself on this one. If you watch the credits of the video, Ron Jeremy plays himself in the film. Does this mean that you are involved in promoting pornography? ;) sarc
