Some pictures have popped up (Courtesy of DoubleT 104.3 Lubbock) of a silver TTU helmet and black matte TTU helmet used to woo recruits last weekend. (click on link for pictures)

Considering that the school has taken more uniform chances in the last two years, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see these tried out in 2012.

So What do you think?

I know a lot of traditionalists hate the new trend in college football of trying out all kinds of bold new unis (Oregon, Okie Light, Maryland, Arizona State, to name a few). And I agree that the traditional powerhouse schools like Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc need to stick to tradition and keep their old school look.

But I think for some of the smaller market schools, new uniform trends (like the black matte helmets that many schools tried this year) really appeal to 17-19 year old recruits.

I for one, am all for trying out new looks if it will appeal to the young recruits out there who like all the new fads. The white helmets we used this year (without the stripes) were pretty sharp, and silver helmets (although strange since they've never been part of our school colors) would look pretty cool as well. And the black matte would be an improvement, in my opinion, on the current black glitter "bass boat paint" helmets we currently use.

Have you seen the fashion trends of 17-19 year old kids today?

In a word… “flashy.” It’s no secret that the flashy uniform trends all over college football these days are targeting those interests directly. Like it or not, that’s the reality.

by 2001Raider on Jan 25, 2012 5:55 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

That will be too bad for Alabama, Texas, Nebraska, Penn State, Miami, etc.

But maybe Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, Michigan and a few others will survive…

I think teams should stick to specific helmets. You can have at least 2 or 3 different unis (or 50 if you want) but the helmets should always stay the same (exception being if you do something like New England and update your logo, not voting pro or con on that specific change, but if you change the logo then helmet should change to match if it includes the logo). But that’s just my opinion.

An exception for something like the Wounded Warrior project is of course totally different due to circumstances.

by HeeroTX on Jan 26, 2012 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

My personal taste

is the traditional look…collegiate block lettering, 100 year-old school colors and a look that hasn’t changed in decades, like Penn State, Nebraska and Texas. But I think the schools that are going with the new flashy trends are doing a really smart thing from a marketing perspective… you have to change with the times. Not only to those alternative unis drive up merchandise sales, but they add unbelievable exposure to a program. Just like how old, traditional businesses are now having to keep up with changing technology and adapt, so do the old traditional institutions in order to engage a new generation.

Love the silver!!!

I attended Tech during the “silver pants” era (1994-1998), and these would absolutely sick with black jersey and silver pants.

I don’t know how good it would look with our current color combinations…..

I am not a fan of the silver, but ...

I do think if we took the matte black uniform from the link in the article, but made some changes. Changes like subbing red for the yellow, the double T for the O and of course an under armor logo for the swoosh, we would be in business.

The silver is OK, but I would not really want the Red Raiders to wear them

We already gave in to white. Why add a color we don’t necessarily use? The flat black is OK, too. I like the suggestion of using the old style logo on the flat black. As far as glitter, well it looks good on boats and maybe in some people’s hair, but helmets….blah. What I really hope for is either a red or black helmet, never to change, as that is our true colors.

a pretty silver,

not an ugly silver like the one i just saw. scarlet and black, yes of course. but “strict interpretation” ship sailed as soon as they started putting white in the unis way back in yonder days before this whippersnapper’s zygote began dividing. wounded warrior, pink this, pink that, save boobies….blah blah blah. of course i’ll disclaimer it and say they’re great causes and i’m all for them, especially, well, you know…. but at the same time a part of me feels like it becomes too much about the causes and not some good ole entertaining helmet smashing. yes, even if we are the ones being smashed, though not as entertaining…..

additionally, and as an aside,

the current uniform fashion competition is a temporary fad capitalized upon by highly successful and very well place niche marketing campaigns. the fad will end. in the mean time maybe i should buy some stock in those companies, because i’m pretty sure all of there sales revenues continue to increase. their cash flows are probably desirable. maybe their holding period adjusted dividend returns are nice too. i dunno.

I've seen both...

I like the matte black a bit. from a design standpoint the matte would look better with a different logo. I assume/ (hope) if they use a matte helmet they will change the logo to fit the matte look. (I enjoyed the wounded warrior helmets). Perhaps they could go along with that theme with the double t. It classes too much imo. (matte with the shinny TT. The silver helmet could work but again with a different logo. I like the way Boise state works with different uniforms. I am not a fan of the way Oregon does it tho. They are trying too hard. Georgia looked good this year. As long as we dont end up with wings on our shoulders or our state flag across half the uniform/helmet I’m ok with change

I don't hate the glitter paint

I actually shelled out $100 for a replica helmet that I keep in my living room, and it has the glitter paint. It just seems like glitter paint should only be used if

1. You own a bass boat
2. You live in the 1970s
3. Your name is Mariah Carey
4. You are somehow associated with the “My Little Pony” franchise
5. Your name is Starsky. Or Hutch.

I’d like the black matte periodically and a shift to the old school plain black paint. I wouldn’t mind ocassionally going throwback to the old flat red double T with white outline.

I'll say this,

if we’re going to have a flat black helmet of any sort, it needs to be John Deere Blitz Black. It’s the best oil based enamel paint ever and it keeps with the heritage of our school.

Are there rules about when you are allowed to start drinking these days? These changing times, I just can’t get used to them.

Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

If we are just picking random colors for out helmets then I think a nice neon lime green would look great.
