Kansas St. 69, Texas Tech 47 | Post Game Thoughts

Box Score | Post Game Quotes

GAME RECAP
MVP
Kevin Wagner | He must have been given the green light to just shoot the ball, and he didn't shoot particularly well (5-16), and could give this MVP to Tolbert, but why not share the love: 16 points, 4 assists, 5 turnovers 2 steals.

Numbers
27 to 7 | KSU had 27 points off of turnovers to TTU's 7.
13 9 to 17 25 | TTU's assist to turnovers last night.
0 | Minnis, Willis and Lew missed all 9 shots and did not score a point.

THE RESULT

TRYING TO FIND A BRIGHT SPOT | I was pretty sure that this was going to be the result in that KSU would hold Texas Tech to under 40% shooting and limit Texas Tech offensively. That did happen and as mentioned on the right, two of the players that should be leading this team didn't score at all and had otherwise awful nights. Nevertheless, it was so nice to see and I had no idea that what I wrote yesterday, "At this point, I don't know if it's worth to give Kevin Wagner the starting role as this team's point guard," would actually come true. It was nice to see Wagner see significant minutes and yesterday when I wrote that, my thought was, "why the hell not." Tolbert looked significantly better and that's so encouraging, if nothing for my and his psyche.

I still can't say that I understand how minutes are being distributed and why a player will get 36 minutes despite being absolutely awful, while another player rides the pine. I just don't have a good handle on why certain players play and others don't.

BACKCOURT

Jararez Willis | Willis played 36 minutes, was 0-8 from the floor, grabbed 3 boards and the official boxscore says that he only had 3 turnovers and 2 assists, but I would promise you that he had at least 5 turnovers last night. This is one of those situations where I cannot explain why he got 36 minutes, but maybe he did because there's no one else to give these minutes. I don't know. Rather than watch Willis not contribute anything, I would have rather watched Petteway.

Ty Nurse | Minimal minutes, 6 and didn't do anything. Nurse is such a liability on defense.

DeShon Minnis | Started again, was a turnover machine and couldn't hit his only shot or make either of his two free throws. Blah.

Luke Adams | Minimal minutes, but he at least made a three-point shot, but did turn the ball over twice.

FRONTCOURT
We just got physically whipped, I thought they played with a lot of toughness and a lot of grit for the most part but just too many errors that you can't have against a good team and errors that we just keep repeating and not finishing plays, that's the story of the game. I thought we fought hard, I thought we fought physically hard for the most part of it and I'm proud of their efforts.

On the team's turnovers.

Jordan Tolbert | So good to see some monster dunks, at the very least, this keeps me hopeful. Tolbert was 6 of 8 from the floor and the same from the line, scoring 18 points, grabbing 8 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 blocks. Really just glad to see him get back on track a bit.

Robert Lewandowski | Lew attempted just 1 shot, a three-point shot, had 5 rebounds and continued to throw the ball away from the high post in trying to feed Tolbert as he also had 5 turnovers. On the positive side, he did have 3 blocks.

Jaye Crockett | Crockett went from 2 minutes to 25, so that's something and he was efficient, making 3 of 4 from the floor and 3 of 5 from the line, had 5 rebounds and looked good. I still can't explain why he's not starting over Lew.

Terran Petteway | Minimal minutes.

Clark Lammert | Minimal minutes, had a foul and a turnover.

Jaron Nash | Minimal minutes and continues his assault on rims while shooting free throws.

Hey Seth...

You wrote the assists to turnovers under the numbers as 13 to 17, that was K-State’s numbers. We actually were quite a bit worse, we were 9 to 25 in this category. And now we rank in the top 5 in the nation in TO’s per game after this game.

Yep

And for the year, the A/TO ratio is 0.66 (#326). But for this game, it was an abominable 0.36.

My arm chair coaching/2 cents

1.)Nurse should never see the light of day off the bench.
2.)Wagner should start, as he can score and will take care of the ball better with more experience
3.) Crockett needs more playing time
4.) Adams is proving he knows the game of bball
5.) Find a shooting guard, and fast!

Here is my opinion

1. KWag got speed and can handle the ball and score too.
2. Lew is like lamar odom of dallas mavs.
3. Nurse and Nash is not going to be here next year.
4. WE NEED A DAMN PLAYER THAT CAN SCORE AND HE CAN HELP OUT TOLBERT. One player can’t do it all. It’s like oralando magic without dwight howard they can’t even win a game.
5.Wills have to step his game up.
6. We need a true PG and a good 3pt shooter. for example look at the 08 Magic team. they had Rashard Lewis, hedo turkoglu, jameer nelson all of whom are good 3pt shooters. when they double dwight howard, he kicks it out to one of those 3pt shooters and they knock it down. For us it’s like we have dwight howard (jordan tolbert) and no shooters that he can pass to. if we have some shooters we can be extremely good.

Good call on Wagner, Seth

I’ve been thinking he should get more of an opportunity (EVERYONE on this team should get an opportunity) and he made good use of his. Like his quickness. Nice to see someone who has played so little take it right at the defense on the first possession. Thought he had a nice game early, but started forcing things late. Got sloppy with the ball, but also found people. Needs to finish better on drives. But I would be happy to see him get more court time.

Tolbert – Hopefully he’s back to form. If he can play like this when the supporting cast is a bit thin, he will be something to see as the team improves.

Willis – I think BCG likes him for his defense and ball pressure. Although if you can argue that Adams is too much of a defensive liability to play a lot, I could argue that Willis was too much of an offensive liability to play a lot last night.

Lew – I’m guessing he gets rewarded for having a good attitude and maturity (and he may benefit when the younger guys are punished for lacking those qualities). BCG may also be harder on the guys who have potential and will be back next year. Still, it seems like production has to be a factor in determining playing time.

Nash – When coaches and analysts talk about a player’s ability to get to the line, it’s supposed to be a good thing.

I feel BCG is being completely honest when he says he has no idea what he will get out of any player in a particular game. That, along with possible discipline issues, may explain why the playing time of some players fluctuates wildly.

My Thoughts

To explain why this team doesn’t have a regular starting line-up, I think Coach BG has grown to understand that it’s going to be a rough season for Tech regardless of who plays this season so his logic is probably to use different players for each game, and provide everyone a good balance of minutes played by the end of the season. That way everyone on the roster has experience of Big 12 action, and will have a better feel of what to expect next season. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect…and I do believe BG is treating this season as “practice”.

This season is more of an experiment for Men’s Basketball just to see the strengths and weaknesses of each of the players (especially the Freshmen) and let them shine and fall where they may.

Next season should be more balanced and I would expect the starting line-up then to be: Wagner, Crockett, Tolbert, Gotcher, and whoever else shows that they can play well for each game. Adams I think will grow to be the team’s 3-pt specialist over time, and will probably be used in certain circumstances.

I really don’t know what to think of Nurse really. It’s almost like the guy plays well during non-conference play but when it comes to Big 12 play he is just completely useless and careless with the basketball turning it over way too many times. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he is used as a bench back-up next season.
