ODDS AND ENDS | Wanted to go ahead and get this out there, Fox34 has obtained a copy of Texas Tech's rejection letter from Leach's offer to settle. Personally, I don't think that this is anything new, it's the same reasoning that Texas Tech has always had, and those reasons really don't really matter until the Texas Supreme Court rules on the sovereign immunity issue. I won't get into what the letter could have or should have said as that's seemingly a fruitless endeavor.
Remember last week that I thought that I'd be able to tell the story about changing the logo? Well, that story is going to have to wait for a while.
CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT | The Chronicle of Higher Education reported yesterday morning that the Big 12 is looking at conference expansion, although later in the day, Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas said that the Big 12 wasn't considering any additional teams. I think the Big 12 will eventually get back to 12 teams, but what do I know. You can also listen to Neinas on Double T 104.3 from yesterday.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | This team is reeling. A 19 point loss to Kansas (official site) is not what this team needs and add to the loss is the fact that F Kierra Mallard was left in Lubbock with an apparent injury. LAJ's David Just recaps the game:
Tech returns home for a three-game homestand beginning Saturday against Texas. A win against the Longhorns would go a long way to boost the lagging confidence.
"One of the kids spoke up and said we’ve been here before," Curry said. "We’ve had the low point before. We bounced back. We have an opportunity to go back to Lubbock and be 5-5 in three games and be right back in the thick of things."
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | It continues to be bad for the men, a 22 point loss, 69-47 (official site). I'll have some post game thoughts later this morning. LAJ's Nick Kosmider and DT's Chois Woodman recap the game and this is from the DT article:
"When you get a layup you need to make it, either that or get two foul shots," he said. "We miss — I mean we just continue to miss layups, and I have a hard time understanding how a college basketball player can continue to miss layups. I mean we missed 13 shots within four feet of the basket."
Sigh.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | LAJ's Don Williams talks with former QB Steven Sheffield who is playing arena league football. He's also still unhappy that OC Neal Brown didn't play both he and QB Taylor Potts in 2010:
"It kind of blew my mind how (offensive coordinator) Neal Brown thought the only way to win was to start one quarterback," Sheffield said. "You have two seniors that have been there for five years. Why can’t they both play?
"Even though it’s a close race, you tell the media it’s a close race and everyone knows it’s a close race, you have one guy play 90 percent of the snaps and one guy sit back and his senior season goes to waste.
"You would think, ‘Hey, I have two good quarterbacks; let’s try to use both of them. There’s things Potts is better at than Sticks (Sheffield). There’s things Sticks is better at than Potts.’ They’re on the same team. Why not use them both?"
I hate teams that play two quarterbacks. Both Leach and Brown essentially chose Potts and I still think it was the right choice in both instances. I guess I'm somewhat surprised that Sheffield still harbors those emotions, but I can't say that I know everything that went on behind the scenes.
In a couple of additional notes, per LAJ's George Watson, the NCAA has banned 7-on-7 tournaments on college campuses. They can still have the tournaments, just not on campus. TAMU held the state's biggest 7-on-7 tournament on campus and many thought it was a significant advantage for TAMU to have so many players on campus. Additionally, per the mothership, the NCAA is considering going to a 7 win threshold to make a bowl game and I would approve this measure.

Blackbeard agrees with the 7 win threshold
and also agrees that Potts was the better choice. In doing so, Blackbeard agrees to stir the pot for DTN.

Houston Raider agrees with Blackbeard...
Houston Raider also hopes that if Texas Tech ever finds a decent measure of success in a major college sport, Texas Tech will not decide to blow itself up from the inside…

I am pulling for women's soccer.
Team has really improved over the past three years. I am sure it is time to get a new coach. This one is not winning enough championships.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Blackbear is right....
All loosing teams have one thing in common, disgruntled players and coaches after the season ends.
It would make no difference which QB played cause your head coaches game plan is run a bunch of trick plays and shut things down with a 10 point lead.

Sticks
Somehow, I think what Sticks had that Potts did nothave is flexability. He could move in the pocket better, run better, and could run through the reads better. Potts had the rocket for an arm and used it to get himself out of trouble. But his problem was also not leading the receivers properly, cutting down on YAC considerably. I simply have not ever been convinced that Potts was the better QB. I don’t know why, just a gut feeling. Being put on a stranglehold for a year is tough, especially when you feel you could do as good or a better job, or maybe enhance each other’s play because of the differences.
I am glad the on campus 7 on 7 stuff is out, it allows too many creds to be taken by the hosting school.
If teams need 7 wins to get to a bowl, a couple of things will happen. The first is obvious in that fewer teams will receive bowl invites. The second is that some really bad bowls can now be eliminated. A third thing is that Tubs will have even more pressure to get a bowl invite as 6 wins won’t cut it anymore.

Changing logo story.
Sorry we have to wait to get the scoop.
Must be a doozy.
You might be surprised what gets me excited.
Remember . . . I’m old.
Sounds like there's a bunch of legal rigmarole.
Surely you didn’t get threatened for simply suggesting you would tell the story?

Yes, and I don’t think I would get threatened, but there’s no ending to the logo story, still trying to work things out.

we can argue for you Seth, we have lots of talented opinions here on DTN
We are pulling for you.

Sheffield is right
I don’t know why coaches are so incapable of using the right tool for the job. When all you have is a hammer – everything starts to look like a nail. It’s idiotic.
The only way something like this causes problems is if the coaches mismanage it so badly that things start to come apart.
The trouble here is the opposite happened, and we had two good quarterbacks who were mismanaged, and it grew a life of it’s own.
Same stuff last year. Why can’t coaches handle this?
The fans want to see these guys play.
...and if it sounds like it frustrates me
Yeah, it does.
When you have two options, and the fanship is split on who they like best, the decision is always have right, and half wrong.
We have no way of knowing who was the best since we saw the play of one.
In the few plays that Sticks did play, there was little success.

Collapse
As I stated in my comments last night in the gamethread, this is no longer a slide it is a complete collapse of this team.
To watch this team compete against tough teams and come out on top in 14 straight games. To watch the Lady Raiders come together and play focused and hard and climb up the NCAA Rankings and have pride in their game play and their teammates and Texas Tech and then to watch it all fall apart in a couple of weeks is very sad and discomforting.
This was the official notice on Mallard:
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior forward Kierra Mallard has been diagnosed with an undisclosed injury and did not make the trip to Lawrence, Kan., for tonight’s game against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.
Mallard was ordered by a team physician to stay home in Lubbock and not travel.
“She’s suffered an undisclosed injury and was not cleared to play by our team physician,” Tech head coach Kristy Curry said. “They recommended that she stay home.”
I am not sure if this was really an injury, a sickness or if it was a punishment or a reprieve from the team and coaches.
This team is fractured and it was evident in their game play last night. The Lady Raiders did not step it up and fill the gaps that Mallard usually fills and that speaks volumes to the group cohesiveness that seemed to be extremely strong, healthy and thriving a few weeks ago and now has seemed to vanish into thin air.
You cannot win games with these types of stats:
FG% 29.7% (19-64 attempts)
3-Pt% 0% (0-7 attempts)
FT% 38.5% (5-13 chances)
Zero steals in this game
Out of 15 Turnovers only 6pts
The Lady Raiders have Texas coming to Lubbock on Saturday, then play ATM on Wednesday and then might have a reprieve with Mizzou on Sunday, Feb 5th. The Lady Longhorns have struggled this year so we might have a shot in turning this downfall around and get a win on Saturday. The defending champs are up next but I don’t think that the Aggies will falter. The Lady Raiders will have to earn that win in a very tough game. Tech might get a break on the Mizzou game since the Tigers are at the bottom of the Conference and have not won a conference game to date. The Mizzou game marks the half-way point in conference play and will also be nationally televised on FSN so I am hopeful the issues are resolved and we beat the Lady Tigers.

if the team physician said to stay home, i'm sure he/she had all of his/her shit together
as they will no doubt come under the scrutiny of Dr. hance and his team. They know everything about everything.

7 WINS IS GOOD + Big 12 talk
I like the idea of 7 wins. I also like the idea of the (psuedo playoff) idea being passed around. Top 8 teams play, then you have a “real” National Champion. You would have to include a 5th & 6th Bowl. Obviously the Cotton would be in the running, but I’m not sure about the other. Who doesn’t like the idea of the Championship game being played at the DeathStar every year in Arlington? Great for the Jones Family, City of Arlington & DFW.
FWST also quoted Chuck Neinas as saying that expansion is in the future, just not sure how much into the future. Possible additions: BYU & Louisville. Not sure if this get’s me too excited, but we’ll see.
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
If they goto 7 wins they also need to eliminate the Div 2 games … those beatdowns really don’t need to count ….. can you image everyone would schedule a Div 2 schools in the pre-conference play watering thing down even more!

Dicky Grigg letter
Umm…is the snarkiness really necessary??
“The timing of Mr. Leach’s letter is curious. From a legal standpoint, it is an odd moment for him to demand millions of dollars he is not owed by the University.”
