Texas Tech Football | Glasgow and Hocutt Emails Released
I just wanted to get a story up on the front page and I think, wanted to give proper credit. Yesterday afternoon, the LAJ released a story, which I quoted in a FanShot regarding how the LAJ had obtained the email exchange between former defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow and athletic director Kirby Hocutt. There was some speculation in that FanShot about how there was no mention about a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in the LAJ article. I'm speculating here, but my thought is that the reason why the LAJ wrote that they just obtained the emails is because in this audio on Double-T 104.3, The Bottom Line, RRS.com's Aaron Dickens (have I given enough credit?) said that the day after Glasgow was let go, he filed a FOIA request and obtained the emails yesterday and the speculation part is that I think that RRS.com then shared the information with the LAJ. So, if you want to do someone a favor, then click on over to RRS.com just to give them a visit. I couldn't find a free story on what they uncovered, but from where I sit right now, they certainly deserve the credit for making the request. You could also click on over to the DMN to read the PDF versions of the emails.
If you listen to the audio, the host (I didn't catch his name) there seems to be an implication that Glasgow met with Hocutt on December 19th (and Bobby Gleason, who is a senior associate athletic director) and intimated to Hocutt that Glasgow wanted to make a move to another program, then realized how much that move was going to cost him, then he back-tracked. Also, Glasgow apparently didn't agree with the move the 4-3. The difficult part for Glasgow to explain is that he gave Hocutt his keys, cellphone and told Hocutt he didn't want to be the defensive coordinator.
Listen to the audio, read the emails, make your own decision, but for me, Hocutt looks pretty good here. Again, Glasgow probably wasn't real pumped about moving to the 4-3, but it seems like a situation where Glasgow took advantage of a contract situation after realizing that he could Texas Tech in a bad spot.

I have a feeling...
that Texas Tech will be better in the long run (probably the short run also) by Glasgow moving on. He does not seem to have the integrity and other other important qualities to be a Red Raider. Good luck to him.
Guns Up!
Unless I am reading it incorrectly, it looks like to me that Kirby lied. Shortstop is busted.
In the first three emails Kriby states that in a meeting that Glasgow already returend his keys and cell phone, yet in the in the last email Kirby ask Glasgow to return his keys and cell phone and courtesy call. Glasgow cleary states that Kirby is lying, and it is confirmed in Kriby’s final email.
I started off being a giant fan of Russian Coffee, but this one went cold. I am glad that the Uiversity put this one to bed before it got too ugly. Leach should be furious, they pay a guy who allegedly, performed “Dirty Recruiting against Tech,” and was due $25,000, but we paid him $100,000.
If we had any good reporters out there, the question should be what did Glasgow have on Tech that warranted him a $100,000 buyout, when he was only due $25,000. There is more to this story than just going to a 4-3 defense.
All this proves to me is that Shortstop is just like Hance and Company, and that our University continues to run this program into the ground.

Or those items were returned to him.

I don't think so because the dates of the emails and the corespondence.
We have limited information, but It looks like to me that Kirby was trying to posture Tech in a good way. Chad comes back quickly and says he did not resign and that the Uniersity turned off his cell phone. It is he said she said, but why would Kriby give Chad back his cell phone and keys.

We are all making a lot of assumptions here, including me, but to keep in compliance with the contract TTU had to give back those items or TTU would be in breach of the contact.

That is a bit of a reach. The only thing that would make sense is that Kirby refused to accept the resignation. Tech went on to make public statements that Glasgow was still the DC and after talks with tuBS they decided to accept the resignation that was previously rejected. Glasgow likely figured out that he would owe $25,000 if he quit and decided not to resign.

Aren’t we all reaching a bit? All I am saying is that it is a possibility that those items were returned to him.

I agree that the items were returned. The reason for the return is what I was saying was a reach. Obviously there was quite a bit of dysfunction within the coaching staff(our conf record demonstrates that) and it appears that Kirby was handed a steaming pile to clean up.

I don't think so Btech
Hocutt never said Glasgow already returned his keys and cell phone. He said, “even going so far as to hand me your keys and your cell phone”.
That could easily mean Glasgow handed the phone & keys to him & Hocutt saying something to the effect of, “let’s slow down here, take some time to think about it & meet tomorrow” without accepting the keys & cellphone.
I cannot imagine for a second that Hocutt would accept Glasgow’s resignation (incl. keys & cell phone) without talking to Tuberville first. And apparently that is what happened next. After talking to Tuberville they decided to accept Glasgow’s (hasty, temperamental?) resignation.
My confidence and faith in Hocutt have only increased by the way this issue was handled.
Who ate your bowl of sunshine this morning, thundercloud?
Austin 'Drew' that thinking up well !!
And it makes sense to me.
When this all was happening there were also comments about trying to get Glasgow to stay…maybe they were really shallow comments about hanging in until Jan 12, but who know where that could have led.

I agree with you Seth
I had high hopes that moving a 10 year position coach on a strong defensive team to DC would yield quick benefits to Tech last year. Something happened around the OU game and never came out of the dive. The offense in that game was great, but the defense only managed to hold them off in the second half when it began to look like OU was going to come all the way back. From there it went off the cliff to embarrassment pulling the offense with it.
I don’t care about the money paid or reporters digging. I agree Leach got an extremely raw deal and always have, but he had his issues. Hocutt cleaned this one up and out without lawyering up, and I give him great credit for it. If you clean out your desk around me, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out as you made your decision obvious. The story here only increased my disappointment in Glasgow.
I too applaud the way Tech cleaned this up quickly, and said so already.
But why did we pay a guy $100,000 who was only due $25,000, and why did Glasgow go around his boss. If you have a problem you go directly to your boss. The only reason you go around your boss is because you either don’t respect him, or there is a problem that can’t be dealt directly with your boss.
This is not going to keep me up at night, but this does not to anything for me to help me think any more positive about our leadership.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Go around?
I doubt Tubs negoitates contract issues with each of his assistants. Sounded like Glasgow had told Tubs, Gleason, etc he was unhappy and all knew he had cleaned out the desk. Seems to me that Hocutt was now the guy to deal with on contract issues. Did I pick up something in this that maybe Glasgow was wanting to leave for another school until he found out how much it would cost him. Sure, I would like to see on 25K out the door, but 75K more is alot cheaper than a bunch of legal fees and bad publicity of a big fight.
We don’t know if Glasgow didn’t go to Tuberville as well and perhaps Tuberville told him that he needed to finalize details with Hocutt.

Also, TTU waived the early termination fee ($25,000) that I think would have had to be paid by Glasgow and Glasgow’s non-compete. Because Glasgow wasn’t technically resigning TTU had to pay to get him out of the contract as he was due $400,000 this year.

That's how I read the $25k too.
If Glasgow terminated the contract, Glasgow would have had to pay $25k.
Also, Tech did not ‘overpay’ the severance. Glasgow signed a two-year $400k per year deal.
The $100k more likely represents a settlement based on the $400k figure.
My view is that coaches don’t go ape sh*t just because the head coach decides to modify a defensive scheme. Even Tuberville said that Tech ran a lot of 4-3 in 2011 (although Tuberville says a lot of things that don’t always make sense).
Something happened in the coaches’ office that seems fishy. Did Tuberville go behind Glasgow’s back, and make the changes without telling him? Was Glasgow caught off guard by a sudden demotion? Was Tuberville playing it straight with Glasgow?
From the emails, it seems that Glasgow reacted negatively in some fashion (including clearing out his desk), and later spoke to his lawyer who probably explained the financial consequences of quitting versus being dismissed. The otherwise trivial discussion about keys, Facebook accounts and cell phones relate to the evidence about who pulled the trigger first.
I think Glasgow backtracked from his initial reaction for the sake of the money, and was able to wangle a settlement.
Glasgow did not handle his business very well (even though he gets his cash), but there’s more to this story than we’re being told.

LR is on scent !
We are seeing something completely different than we saw with the prior HC.
In this case we do not have an Admin seeking some kind of retribution against a guy who is smarter than their collective smarts. There is no doubt that TTU could have gotten out cheaper had that been the goal.
I can see collectively the HC and AD saying they don’t want to hurt Glasgow’s career, there is no reward in that. They did a right thing and it is good for TTU that they did.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
LOL, one does not need a FOIA to realize that the conversations with the HC had already happened and were done.
The thing with FOIA is they can only provide what was documented….what happened between the HC and DC was verbal, they worked on the same hall, saw each other several times each day. By the time the desk was cleaned those ‘converstations’ were in the past.
Did the contracts not guide the results of the settlement ?
Do we not have a different AD leading that ?
Would we not expect different results from a different AD ?
Holcutt did good !!

I had high hopes that moving a 10 year position coach on a strong defensive team to DC would yield quick benefits to Tech last year.
I think you are not alone in that thought, the HC had for the second year looked for a trick defense to overcome Big12 offenses, and drew another short straw.
The 4-2-5 was supposed to be this easy to install quick fix that wasn’t so quick and fixy when it played out on the field. Even with the comments on part of the HC to add rational about injuries and such, I think he was telling his DC, that the 4-2-5 wasn’t cutting it and that we are going to the 4-3. Glasgow couldn’t handle it when he saw other coaches being fired and 4-3 guys being hired, got scared and failed to handle himself wisely.
Something happened around the OU game and never came out of the dive.
I am tying in the reports of the post game locker room comments from several of the coaches—who happen to no longer be on staff—about how this game was a game in which they should not have won, how had the game started on time they would not have won, how they were lucky to have won it and really did not have the ability to have won it.
I would not want that kind of guy on my football staff either—assuming that all this is accurate.

You are not flying solo !!! LOL ! We all wanted to see something really good from his potential.

The AD handled this well and showed spine
The past two defensive coordinators promoted defenses that didn’t fit the player talents. Willis and Glascow never had the emotional stability to see it through as is shown in these latest emails show with Glascow. Tech’s defense fell off the table after the OU game. Injuries were a factor but Glascow was responsible and did not adjust. I am hoping with this latest hire, the defense improves and stabilizes.
"Appreciate the target you put on my back. Last time you did that, you almost got me fired." Tommy Tuberville 2006
Am I off the 'fence' here? I read it like Btech.
http://redraiders.com/filed-online/2012-01-27/tech-pay-former-defensive-coordinator-100000-termination-agreement#.TyQiAYHQd7b …………. Glascow still has his phone and his FB has been disconnected (just like the recruit said)? The TTU releases that he is still employed. Also, in first e-mail someone had initialed Kent Hance in?? I think I’ve lost my trust.
Oh well, a new fangled defense (for TTech) would have taken a lot of effort and time and support. The 4-3 seems so much better. (even tho, ya’ll haven’t taught me all that stuff yet).
Bottom line...and there seems to be a lot of those over the last few years
Glasgow is gone and Tech is moving forward. Since the account is settled, I hope it never arises again, unlike the account that is still open. Tech can make all of this “look” better by settling the open account. Then, everyone can move on that is associated with Tech in some form or fashion. I am so ready for some GOOD football by our Red Raiders.

I'm very torn...
Which George costanza episode does Glasgow sound more like?
1)where George quits Friday but shows up Monday at staff meeting as if nothing happened
2)where George was locked out of his office and got in via the vent
3)where George was trying to get fired frim the Yankees to take another job
I say #1

No Confusion for me
I think it is very clear. Here is my interpretaiton of the “events”.
1.On Dec 19th, Glasgow clears out his desk and hands his keys and phone to Hocutt and tells him he is resigning. Hocutt has not discussed this yet withTubbs, and hands the key and phone back to Glasgow. Hocutt then goes to Tubbs, they agree to accept the resignation, and then Hocutt writes the email back to Glasgow accepting his resignation. At this time, it is probably standard procedure to turn off the phone that has been issued to Glasgow, so they cancel the phone service…but Glasgow still has his phone.
2. News reports come out the Glasgow has been fired. Tech denies these reports. That is a true reflection of events, because Tech has not fired anybody. Glasgow resigned.
3. Then Glasgow realizes his blunder, and calls in his agent and lawyer, refusing to talk to Hocutt – probably on the advice of his lawyer.
4. Finally, Hocutt and Glasgow have a face-to-face to settle things for the 100k buy-out.
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
And other things that are clear to me
Glasgow appears to have some “issues”….so I say good riddance. And Hocutt appreared to handle this very, very well. So kudos to him.
