Recruiting on the South Plains | FS Austin Stewart
I'll admit that I'm a bit excited about the potential of Stewart and what he could bring to the team. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out, and maybe this is a futile thought, but I don't know why some players are offered while others are not. Stewart, CB Bruce Jones (he's the next profile) and WR Sadale Foster are the two that come to mind and they both seem really effective against their competition. I realize the competition is JUCO, but that has to be a bit better than high school and they're still playing well. Either way, I'm excited about what Stewart can bring.

Ht: 6'2" | Wt: 200 lbs | Forty: 4.45
JUCO: Pierce C.C. (Woodland Hills, CA)
The Player Speaks: LAJ's Don Williams spoke with Stewart, who jumped at the chance to play Division I football at Texas Tech:
"They were looking at him and they needed safeties, and that’s when I popped up," Stewart said. "They found me — a 6-2, 200 safety. They looked at my tape and fell in love. That’s how it started."
Williams talks a bit about Stewart's journey, which is that he originally signed with South Carolina State, but thought he was destined for bigger things. Thus, he asked for and received his release and transferred to L.A. Pierce C.C., which is the same college as Kassiem Everett. Since Stewart qualified out of high school, he could go to a JUCO, and then transfer, which means that Stewart has four years to play three years. That's good.
Offers and Rankings: Other than SMU, Texas Tech was the only other relatively major school to offer. New Mexico, New Mexico St., Florida International, Northern Colorado and Western Michigan round out his offer list, so that doesn't appear overly impressive. No rankings either.
The Video: Film don't lie. Go check it out on Hudl.
Scouting Report: For Pierce last year, Stewart registered 26 tackles, 1 interception and 1 pass break-up. But the film, which actually happened, seems to tell a different story. I want to back up a bit too as I think the reason he wasn't highly recruited in high school was that he was a 6-0/190 pound safety that ran a 4.6 40-yard dash (see combine results here and here). But the strange thing is that in Stewart's video, he's returning punts and that's usually reserved for a quicker guy. Stewart doesn't seem to have a really quick start, but is more of a long-stride type of player, but he's obviously effective. Again, it makes me wonder about the type of competition that's out in California. If I had to make a player comparison, I'm thinking that Stewart is a similar player to D.J. Johnson.
Austin, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: For more information on what a Cumulative Ranking is, go here, but the idea is to take all of the data from all of the recruiting services and put it into just one number. Thus, the idea is that a grade of 68 or 69 is a thee-star player, while a ranking of 83 or 84 is a four-star player. Anything in between those numbers or lower means that the player most likely has a lower grade with one service or another. For example, Quinton White is thought of by all the recruiting experts as a solid three-star player. While a player like Clayton Nicholas is mostly a three-star player but ESPN does give him a four-star grade, so his grade is a bit higher. All of the data should be on this Google spreadsheet.

3 OL???
Only 3 offensive lineman has me more than slightly worried.

Weren’t we short on OL this year as well?

I think there are 10 on scholarship right now, add these 3 and that’s 13 (I think, going off of memory here).
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
But how many of those can play? Wasn’t that one of many complaints this year was that there were only 6-7 that could play at a competitive level?

The offensive line will be relatively young this year so I don’t know. Replacing Edwards, Keown and Okafor. McDaniel was pretty much the starter at RT at the end of the year and would expect Carpenter t play at LG, but don’t know about center.
Go Raiders . . .

One of the Morales brothers I would imagine.

Tony was the backup early in the year, but was injured, so yes, I think you’re right.

Tweeted that he was gonna be moved “full-time” to center a couple of weeks ago.

Is it a concern that the offer lists for some of the JUCOs are unimpressive?
Or is that simply a result of most major schools focusing on HS kids and not going after many JUCOs?
not really
Look at NFL rosters there are guys from big name schools and schools you have never heard of. What matters is how they develop and play the game.
6'2" / 200 is a good size for a FS
if the speed can improve a bit, and someone teaches him to wrap up on his tackles……
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
Here's a thought...
Two DB’s that we’ve had recently are playing in the NFL. Jamar Wall came in as a running back and Joselio Hanson came in as a JUCO recruit. I can’t think of the last time we had success with a recruited DB.
Anybody?

Dwayne Slay
Is another. Recruited from JUCO as a safety. Can’t think of anyone better at the safety position in college football than this guy was.

rod woodson?

Note: I said "better than" and "college football"
There might have been several equals. But I can’t remember any safety in the college game that people would pay to see – - just see him make hits. This guy was the ultimate head-hunter. Too bad, but in today’s game he would be flagged all the time for those kinds of hits.
And he was feared by the opposing WR’s because they knew he was lurking in the middle of the field. Man, I wish our 2011 defense had anyone that could illicit fear from the opposition. It’s a sad story.
The rest of the story – Slay is now out of football after bombing in the pro game. He never made it at the next level.

charles woodson then? I know what you mean by head-hunter – the guy was intimidating.

i think he played cb
the only other guy i can think of as good was roy williams from oklahoma
I'm not discounting Slay by any means, the dude was a beast.
I’m just talking about recruits that weren’t highly touted that ended up being in the NFL.

Before Slay, we had a guy named Ted Watts
He is the one every Tech DB should pattern themselves after. One of my favorites, as are The Beast, Stinnet Stingray, Kong, Senore Sack and Zach Attack. There are a bunch of Tech favs, but these guys top the list with their gametime energy and committment.

wow...all blasts from the past...
Eric Felton…knocked Earl Campbell from the game with a vicious hit on a sweep…and he told me he was going to do it the week before in the dining hall…Earl did, however, come back into the game and he was not happy…

Austin Stewart is an interesting player.
He may be bigger than 6-2, 200. Whether or not, he will be once he gets into a solid Div1 training and conditioning program, we have seen results from the current staff for putting football weight on players.
It is also interesting all the return plays that anchor his highlight video. Didn’t he make good plays at safety ?
If he is reasonably intelligent as a football player, and is coachable, then we may have something with this guy, he looks pretty athletic and has three years. If nothing else get about 25 – 30 more lbs on him, give him jersey number 82 and play him as a TE !!!
