ODDS AND ENDS | Dont' forget that the men and women's teams will be playing Oklahoma St. tonight. The Lady Raiders are in Lubbock, while the men travel to Stillwater. I don't think there's any television for either, but if there is, please feel free to drop it in the comments.
Per the Sports Business Daily, Oklahoma has apparently sold their 3rd tier media rights to Fox Sports and next year and:
Fox has agreed to carry at least 1,000 hours a year of Oklahoma programming on its FS Southwest and FS Oklahoma regional sports networks, which go to 8.6 million homes in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and, yes, Texas.
So I guess this is what's going to be standard for most, if not all teams, that do not have the nickname "Longhorns". UT has a network that no one can watch (not literally) and have made a lot of money. OU now has programming on a major cable television network that a lot of people will see, but probably isn't going to make a ton of money. You tell me which one is better?
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | LAJ's David Just writes about how Oklahoma St. has played well despite losing their coach in that plane crash late in 2011. Here's head coach Kristy Curry:
"We’ll do exactly what Kurt would want me to do: focus on getting my team ready to play and have them prepared," Curry said. "I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like for that staff and those kids. We just have so much respect and love for them. We’re going to throw it up and play for 40 minutes and compete at the level we need to, and when it’s over we’re going to hug ’em and continue to keep ’em in our prayers every day."
Just also writes that fans are excited about the team being better and fans have stuck with the team through the lean times:
"A lot of times people don’t understand it: Fans are an important part of the atmosphere and the team’s success," Wasson said. "Why play for someone when fans are booing you or the arena is empty? There’s not that draw to come in. But when they are there, like against Penn State, the crowd was behind the team and the kids knew the crowd was behind them. That carries you."
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | LAJ's Nick Kosmider writes that this young team must be ready and head coach Billy Gillispie says that the team must have contributions from everyone:
"We have to have every single guy on our team contributing, and that’s just not happening right now," Gillispie said. "You just don’t know what you’re going to get from too many guys, and we have to have more consistent play from everyone."
And PF Robert Lewandowski says that the team is practicing hard:
"They have been better," Lewandowski said of the practices, "and we just need to keep our mindset on being better, just step by step. We want to be peaking at the right time, and we’re on an uphill slope right now. We’re not going downhill, so we’ve just got to keep going up."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | LAJ's Don Williams confirms what we learned in yesterday's FanShot, which is that late yesterday afternoon, defensive coordinator candidate Art Kaufman was in Lubbock yesterday and former defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow is returning to the TCU staff. I don't have a lot of things to say about this and am just going to wait until a decision is made on the defensive coordinator, but I think its going to be Kaufman.
The US Army Bowl, which is one of the high school all-star games (the other being the Under Armor game) and DL Michael Starts is getting some nice reviews per 24/7 Sports Barton Simmons:
Fellow Texan Michael Starts is a player that also continues to see his stock rise. The Texas Tech commit has a frame that stands out on the field and he showed a nasty streak that you like to see out of your offensive tackle. Starts also has the athleticism and versatility to get some reps on the defensive side of the ball.

I saw that Michigan coach Hoke referred to his team as...
team 132, or the 132nd team in their history, so maybe we could promote some history and ignite some school spirit and refer to our upcoming season as team 87(as a side note Michigan has only won 11 games 5 times and we have won 11 games 3 times-1953,1973 and 2008)
I am as disappointed in the current state of Tech football as anyone and maybe we need to promote our history to increase our sense of pride in our program, heck we need to have something to look forward too as Tuby has made a real mess of things and by not taking ownership of his mess has really made a bigger mess to the point where like some of you, I find myself almost wanting to root for losses so we can fire him(he doesn’t inspire many fans), but then I look at history and find myself wanting the school to succeed more than Tuby failing….
So history and tradition need to be pushed to the front and we must demand from our administration(maybe Kirby can lead the way)… God knows Hance and the other knuckleheads are the ones who set Tuby p to fail and we need a new chapter… review our history!
Did Tech play football prior to 2000.
I thought our heritage began in 2010 not 1923. I had a dream.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
We are a school that can't or won't acknowledge it's most successful decade of football ever...
Crazy…
Yeah… I’d call that a mess…

Our most successful decade of football ever was the 1950's followed by the 40's
We won 4 conference championships in the 50’s and 3 in the 40’s.
Border Conference...
dun-dun, dun-dun-dun
"We have some injuries on our team, but that won't make a difference in this game." - Coach TT Nov. 19, 2002 going into the Iron Bowl
I guess it depends upon your criteria....
Bowl Game appearances: 10 in the 2000’s, 3 in the 50’s, 3 in the 40’s…
Winning record: 10 in the 2000’s, 4 in the 50’s, 6 in the 40’s…
I think it would be interesting to analyze the end of year national ranking if that data existed…
But I’ll concede your point with correction below…

He was coaching the same players
If coach Tubs doesn’t think his players are worth a darn with the exception of 7 or 8, how can he expect CG to have success? Tubs himself doesn’t expect to win with the talent on the field and he is a defensive mastermind

I think Glasgow is a guy who was placed in a difficult situation. He’s probably much better off coaching for TCU and Patterson.

Hope he doesn't
come back to haunt us when we play TCU next year.
I imagine he will feel like he has something to prove in that game...
It will be interesting to see how we match up and play that game…

I would be bitter if were him...but that's just me
I imagine he would use his experience with Tubs – I would guess it’s more personal than directed at Tech as a whole – as motivation to kick butt when playing Tech.

Longhorn network
I went home to Odessa over the holiday break and Grande Comm carries the LHN. My buddies who are LH fans dont even watch it. As a recruiting tool, I think OU is getting the better deal, but as an overall deal (academics) UT is getting the better deal IMO
Get your kicks, on route 66...
Kaufman
I pretty sure he’s our new DC by tomorrow. I’m not real sure how I feel about this guy but it’s probably best we get that position filled before February 1st. Hopefully he can deliver and just maybe he has a few recruits he can sway this way. Amidst all these coaching changes I’m just holding out for hope that these guys can fix that side of ball quickly and effectively.

Art Kaufman's Bio from the UNC website
A 27-year coaching veteran, Art Kaufman is in his third season as Carolina’s linebackers coach. He was elevated to defensive coordinator in July after Everett Withers was named interim head coach. He came to UNC after one season at Southern Miss, where he coached the defensive line and was the special teams coordinator.
Under his guidance, Carolina has developed several outstanding linebackers, including 2011 NFL Draft picks Bruce Carter (second round, Dallas) and Quan Sturdivant (sixth round, Arizona), and current standouts Kevin Reddick and Zach Brown.
Despite injuries to Sturdivant and Carter in 2010, the Tar Heels still finished fourth in the ACC and 30th in the country in total defense. Reddick and Brown were the team’s top tacklers.
Carolina’s linebackers helped lead a defense that finished first in the ACC and sixth in the nation in total defense in 2009. The Tar Heels were 10th in the nation against the run and finished 13th in scoring defense. Carolina was the only defense in the country to finish among the top 15 in total yards allowed, scoring, rushing, passing, pass efficiency, third down percentage and tackles for losses. Sturdivant earned All-ACC honors and Carter was a second-team pick.
Kaufman, who has coached in 11 bowl games, helped lead Southern Miss to a victory over Troy in the New Orleans Bowl in 2008. A former defensive coordinator at Mississippi, Kaufman also has coached at Middle Tennessee State, East Carolina, Arkansas Tech and Louisiana Tech.
Kaufman spent three seasons at Middle Tennessee as the Blue Raiders linebackers coach and two seasons as defensive line coach at East Carolina. Prior to joining the staff at ECU, Kaufman spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas Tech.
A 1980 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Kaufman had two stints at Mississippi, coaching in Oxford for a total of 10 years. He spent six years as the Rebels’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Kaufman was a two-time All-America linebacker during his playing days at Arkansas-Monticello and followed his four-year career with the Boll Weevils by taking a graduate assistant position at Delta State University.
He earned his first full-time coaching job in 1983 when he became the outside linebackers coach at Northwestern State University (La.). In 1987, he was named defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Northwestern State.
He left there the following year for Ole Miss to coach the Rebels’ outside linebackers and defensive ends. While at Ole Miss, Kaufman helped guide the Rebels to back-to-back bowl appearances (1989 Liberty Bowl and 1991 Gator Bowl) for the first time since the 1970s.
Four years later, Kaufman was named the defensive coordinator/linebacker coach at Louisiana Tech University, where he remained until returning to Ole Miss in 1995. In 1992, his defensive unit ranked in the top five nationally.
He again served as the Rebels’ defensive coordinator and linebacker coach for the next six years. During his second stint at Ole Miss, Kaufman helped the Rebels to four straight bowl berths (1997-2000), and his 1999 defense ranked fourth nationally in rushing defense.

good write up and thanks for the info......only concern
ACC does not equal B12-2

Agreed
But it is clear that this is not his first rodeo. That gives me some level of confidence.

Didn't go with Tubbs to Auburn
Tommy took his entire staff with him to Auburn when he left Ole Miss except for Kaufman. Wonder if that means anything?
I’ve wondered this too. Not sure what to think. It could be something as simple as Kaufman having kids in school and not wanting to uproot his family.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Or maybe he just didn't want to go
He could have seen better opportunities for himself at Ole Miss, he could have felt ties to Ole Miss for other reasons. Who knows.

2 Thoughts
-1 Looks like he has a history of re-cruiting 3 Star players and coaching them up … this is good !
-2 Why does it seem like all these coaches rattle between the same southern schools; I do believe they play defensive football north of the mason-dixon…… why no NFL, CLF, or High School?
"we did a lot of things well, but there are several areas that need improving, our idea of moving forward is to do things that make you improve" - Jason Garrett
Michael Starts
Do we like him on offense or defense? Personally, I’d love to see him come in and play OT for us.
OL
This kid could play both but I think we really need this kind of athlete on the O-line opening up lanes since we’re going to run the ball more.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
The REAL question is....
will he remain commited to AND actually sign with Tech………… only time will tell.

CG back at TCU
Don’t we start playing them next year? I’m sure he knows the offense and defense signals. I’m SURE that our fearless leader is already thinking about that.
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
Allegedly; Dirty Recruiting.
Not to mention our center, Allegedly; giving away signals. This team is starting to look more like a Pirate than a River Boat Gambler.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
I’m not sure it matters what information he takes away and uses against us. We were so bad last season and ill prepared for games we beat ourselves.

well if he coaches TCU like he did Tech
I don’t think we will have to worry about him stealing signals.
So Glasgow was the TCU mole planted by Patterson then
Given his lack of ethics and ruthless attitude, I think Tech needs to do an internal investigation on his emails and phone calls and see whether he was infact giving away some confidential information to TCU and Patterson over the course of the past year. I am just glad that we were able to cut our losses with this guy.
Also this explains where Feldsman learned about Glasgow firing
Somebody was talking and it was Glasgow.

Agree
And as much as I love Tech, if TCU decided to plant a “mole” somewhere, why would it be Tech? Think that is a pretty big stretch. I feel like we should be typing these messages in code…
Die-hard Texas Tech girl & new Cougar (fan)! Bring it!
Then why would he call up our recruits and tell them to go elsewhere?
I don’t think that’s cool or classy. Also, the fact that he was being fired got leaked the day before the JUCO signing day, indicates that Glasgow talked to people outside of Tech to get this information out. This is the reason why the information was posted by TCU posters before Feldsman or anybody tweeted the news.
Everything that you’ve speculated about is speculation. Nothing has been verified that I’ve seen. If you have some verification, then please post a few links.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
CG Character
From what I have heard from some friends over at TCU CG is considered a coach with high ethical standards. I find it hard to believe he would ruin his own career by “dirty recruiting” or whatever some have alluded to. If found out to be true he wouldn’t be trusted by anybody in the coaching community.
I still don’t know, so it’s tough to speculate. Until someone comments, and even then we might not have a answer, but a one-sided story, it’s really tough to know what happened. I’ve had people email some not-so-nice things about him, but it’s still all speculation.

My thinking is along the same lines as Oldgreywolf
Even if he is not the nicest most ethical guy out there, why would he sabotage his own career by getting involved in dirty recruiting? Just doesn’t make sense.

I concede that it's all speculation and rumor
There is no definite proof that he actually did this.
LADY Raider Game
Hopefully it’s a big crowd to start conference play.
7 p.m. is start. Go out and support this team!
Wreck em’
OU has it right this time
OU is doing what is better for their fan base and future recruits and the deal with FOX is the better marketing choice for OU vs. the LHN. This arrangment is one that should be followed.
The LHN is just a money gamble for ESPN and does nothing for the fans of UT.
.
"I was taught to fight, taught to win" .... "Don’t Give Up"
Not to mention
the $$ bonus for the UT althletic department. It’s all about the money.
But if this venture turns out to be a “bust”, maybe the Big 12 can follow others like the B1G to have a conference network. That appears to be working well up here in the midwest. But if OU pursues their own network, and UT has their own network, that might be very messy to clean up, and almost impossible then to have a conference network.
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
How 'bout...
If we ever got a “Red Raider Network” together, let’s get good old Blackbeard to be our first on-air host. That’ll wake up the casual viewing fans! (“All right Red Raider fans, I’m back b….s!”)

Hopefully, Kaufman works out for our defense.
His pedigree sounds legit. I like that he’s put some linebackers in the league that I’ve actually heard of before.
On a side note, I’d like to complain about the winter weather in Calgary at this time. It was 60 degrees when we got off the plane. That is retarded, for lack of a better word. I came up here to snowboard, not swim. Rant off.
