Recruiting on the South Plains | CB Bruce Jones

Jones is the fourth commit, and most likely last, from Riverside C.C. I mentioned this a bit earlier, but I think the thought with the staff was to recruit and sign players that could play and that played on successful teams, as Riverside and Gulf Coast were both highly ranked at the end of the year. At this point, I have no idea if it will work, but I've been impressed with the film that I've seen of each of the players and Jones is no different. It was difficult recognizing good cornerback play, but I think that Jones has it.

Let's get to it.

The Measurables:

BRUCE JONES
Position: CB
DTN Profile
Video: Clip 1
Rivals 5.5
Scout
ESPN N/R
24/7 Sports N/A
Ht: 5'9" | Wt: 175 lbs | Forty: N/A
JUCO: Riverside C.C. (Riverside, CA)

The Player Speaks: LAJ's Don Williams profiled Jones, and Jones says that he likes to compete:

"I’m a tremendous competitor," he said. "I think that’s what’s got me here (to be a Division I recruit). When I’m on the field, I’m trying to show I’m the best man out there. I’m playing with some good guys, so it’s not easy to do that."

Offers and Rankings: Only two schools, Texas Tech and New Mexico St. No rankings.

The Video: Film don't lie.

Bruce Jones #21 (via footballjunkhead)

Scouting Report: Am I crazy to really like Jones ability to jump the receiver. Very quick recovery time and a really nice leaping ability that coincides with the ability to correctly time his jump to break up a few passes. He's adept at playing man, has a nice ability to recognize a play and support the run defense and isn't afraid to hit. I really like what I'm seeing here. For the year, Jones finished with 31 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 4 interceptions and 12 pass break-ups. This probably means that Jones was probably playing the opposing team's #1 receiver and didn't back down. For comparison purposes, the leader for pass break-ups was Cody Davis with 5.

Bruce, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

The 2012 Class: Cumulative ranking explanation here. Cumulative ranking data here. Quick and easy explanation:

The idea is to take all of the data from all of the recruiting services and put it into just one number. Thus, the idea is that a grade of 68 or 69 is a thee-star player, while a ranking of 83 or 84 is a four-star player. Anything in between those numbers or lower means that the player most likely has a lower grade with one service or another. For example, Quinton White is thought of by all the recruiting experts as a solid three-star player. While a player like Clayton Nicholas is mostly a three-star player but ESPN does give him a four-star grade, so his grade is a bit higher.

I thought we were recruiting up a tier?

This guy looks like a long lost Charbonnet brother on tape.

by mojavereject on Jan 5, 2012 10:10 AM CST reply actions

I'll take another Charbonnet any day of the week

This kid reacts quickly to the play, isn’t afraid to take some chances, and puts it all on the line in tackles. Been a while sinice I’ve gotten this excited watching a defensive player’s tape. I really like what I see here. Nice pick-up!

Hes been “coached up” by someone else so Tubs wont have to bother.. :)

Is that anything like a Chardonnay?

I’ll take that any day of the week.

No kidding!

Charbonnet brothers were all damned good players—and there was NO QUIT in those guys.

Young Charbonnet was running around with N. James when all that stuff went down in 2009...

Won’t hold it against him because I don’t know enough to know anything… but it was disturbing for me at the time…

It's not a knock on that particular type of player per se

but this is the kind of athlete that we already have more than a few of within the program, and been told are the reason Tech can’t compete. He might be a shade better in coverage than most of the DBs we have on staff, but he’s going to go down with a bum shoulder or concussion just as fast as any other undersized corner when getting paved over against a Big XII run game.

has recruiting ever been anything more than that?

just mixing the percentages

So assuming we are running a 4-3 next year.....

Who are our starting 4 DB’s

I’m guessing Porter and Bulitt plus these two JC transfers?

gotta beat our corndog - hopefully we'll use him where he has the most impact for the team - I want him out there somewhere

With as many injurys we’ve had a DB position the past 2 years, We need a good two Deep because the second string will end up starting at some point in the season.

by Techcuz on Jan 5, 2012 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Its not the two deep but the three deep that we need to worry about.

By the time we play West Virginia, all of our RB’s will be DB’s.

I wonder if Bullitt plays linebacker?

Yes, I think he gets moved to LB.

Give him an off season to put on some muscle, and with his speed and agility, I think he fits OLB perfectly.

Bullitt

That kid needs to be on the field. I see him developing into a really good player.

Bullitt

IMO was the best player on the defense last year seemed to continuously make TFL.

by RedRaid13 on Jan 5, 2012 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

I agree. I’d take him as the best potential over any of those guys presently on the defense.

I know this year was awful

but I like the concept of the 4-2-5 Defense , we just need a little more beef on the D-line and at LB

by CaribbeanRaider on Jan 5, 2012 3:13 PM CST reply actions

Isn't that like saying

I want to run the Air Raid offense, but I my receivers are slow and my QB is a rag-arm?

Good coaches don’t install an offense or defense that does not have the requisite player-profiles. That’s asking for a disaster. Wait….come to think about it, that’s exactly what happened in 2011.

Many on this board have sais this, but it bears repeating. What is the identity of this team? Coach Tuberville needs to figure that out, recruit for it, hire staff that know how to coach it, train for it, practice it, and then do it…on all three sides of the football.

An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.

by candyroll on Jan 5, 2012 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

I agree w/ you

I just wish we could of stuck w/ the 4-2-5 , I like the idea o having a little more speed out on the field

by CaribbeanRaider on Jan 5, 2012 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Think we're saying the same thing

in a different way. Again, if the identity of this team is the 4-2-5….like Patterson decided at TCU, then do what Patterson did. He made that the identity of the TCU defense. He knows what kind of recruits will fit in that system. he knows how to coach it, train for it, practice it, and execute it.

Here we are, the 3rd year into Tubby’s tenure, and we still have no idea what the identity of this team really is…on all three sides of the ball. Tubby talks about “throwing the football” in an apologetic way, and we all know that he is a lot more comfortable running the football. Fine, make a decision, and go do it, whatever it is. Georgia Tech said “I’m going to run the football”…and then did it. I’m ok with that, if I see a decision and then a plan and commitment to that decision.

The same applies of defense. Here we are, trying to find our 4th coordinator in 3 years, and during those three years have flip-flopped defensive schemes. C’mon Man!!

An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.

by candyroll on Jan 5, 2012 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

Lets see 3-4 in year one, 4-2-5 in year two, and 4-3 in 2012.

How about we run a 5-2 defense in 2013. I like this because we stop the run first, then we stop the pass.

"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.

I want to run the Air Raid offense, but I my receivers are slow and my QB is a rag-arm?

Well, Leach did this when he got to Texas Tech. Truthfully, TTU didn’t have a lot of options at LB, so the 4-2-5 actually was a pretty good option, but CaribbeanRaider is right in that there wasn’t enough size on the DL as Graves, Wade and Rumph possibly would have made a difference. But to your point, a coach needs to pick a system and stick with it. Live and die with that system.

Go Raiders . . .

by Seth C on Jan 5, 2012 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Right

But Leach had a long-term plan. He knew what the identity of his team was, or was going to be. It took him a couple of years, but he did it

It took Patterson a couple of years also.

Again, here we are, the 3rd year into this coach’s tenure, and I still don’t know what the identity of this team is (or will be). It’s not clear. And that’s not good.

An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.

I was gonna say he’s to small, but then i realized Tyrann Mathieu is the exact same size.
