ODDS AND ENDS | Have you started running as part of a New Year's resolution? Well, luckily, SB Nation has just launched a running blog, Stride Nation.
I am sure that you have already seen this, but if you haven't then set aside about 20 or 30 minutes to check out 2011's best GIF's from SB Nation's Jon Bois. This was one of my favorites, which was former Mizzou player Aldon Smith, now playing for San Francisco, making a sack and ensuring he does not receive an unsportsmanlike penalty:

LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | I'll say that I was tied up with the kid last night so I really didn't get a chance to follow either game. Either way, you love to see a win for the first conference game. Keirra Mallard was in beast-mode as she was the only Lady Raider in double-figures as she had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. Here are your details:
TTU 58, OSU 53 Box Score | Post Game Quotes
LAJ's David Just (be careful, there is an auto-play video and if anyone from the LAJ reads this, please don't do auto-play videos when you click on a link) breaks down the game:
"I thought we were a little tight," Curry said. "First Big 12 game. But I thought our experience helped us make plays when it mattered the most. This bunch has been able to do that."
Mallard, who also had a season-high five blocked shots, has 188 for her career, four shy of second place all-time at Tech. The 6-foot-3 senior had four steals, a 3-pointer, and was 4 of 5 from the free-throw line.
Curry called it an all-Big 12 performance.
"I’m just trying to help my teammates out," Mallard said. "If I’m there, I’m going to try and get the block. Lately I’ve been trying to not block so much so I stay out of foul trouble, but it’s hard to stop blocking."
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | Lack of scoring. I don't know if that's a succinct summary, but from looking at the box score, that may be the case. Here's the details:
TTU 59, OSU 67 Box Score | Post Game Quotes
The team shot 36% from the field and had four players in double-figures (Tolbert with 13 and Crockett, Nurse and Willis each had 11) but got just 13 points from the remainder of the team. I think this is going to be a recurring theme for the team the entire year. Just can't score.
LAJ's Nick Kosmider breaks down the game:
Tech was locked in defensively early, limiting Oklahoma State to just eight points during the game’s first seven minutes. But as Tech began to go cold from the floor, Gillispie said the team’s focus on the defensive end suffered, and the Cowboys sprinted to a 40-29 halftime lead with a number of buckets scored in transition.
"I see too much confidence when we make a shot and not enough confidence when we miss one," Gillispie said. "That’s a sign of mental toughness and that’s something that has to be developed. You can’t only play when things are going well for you.
"They made plays and I have to give them respect for doing that, but it just shows a sign of either immaturity or not being tough mentally."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | Not a lot out there except I did run across this 24/7 Sports article from Barton Simmons on Texas Tech commit Dominique Wheeler, who is committed to Texas Tech, but will be taking visits to Baylor and Texas A&M before signing day. Wheeler's comments are somewhat common in that he's got nice things to say about all of his options and I'm okay with that, despite the fact that he's committed to Texas Tech. I think we should think of some other word other that committed to denote when a player has temporarily chosen a school with the ability to back out of that decision until National Signing Day. Like I said, Wheeler says some nice things about TAMU and Baylor, but I'll just blockquote what he says about Texas Tech:
"Texas Tech just makes me feel like home," he said. "The coaches and players always treat me well and are always checking on me and taking care of me. Also, the way they play. They pass the ball like almost 80 percent of the time and pass the ball 40 or 50 times a game and that affects my position good."

Blackbeard's third person thursday thoughts
1. Congrats Lady Raiders – came thru when they needed to – keep winning
2. Keep hangin RRB, you are still learning. Just listen to what Billy Clyde tells you, then do it.
3. Dominique, just sign for Tech – we need all the help we can get.
4. WVU scares the shit out of Blackbeard- damn they are some kinda good.
The Orange Bowl made Blackbeard very very sad.
We ought to Haboob his ass
Was that not a thing a beauty last night?
WVU is for real. Arizona Raider is afraid that Tubs will still be figuring the weather conditions before he realizes we are down 28.
Arizona Raider couldn’t be happier for Dana.

Yes, a thing of beauty
Quote of the night for me. Jaws saying "Holgerson doesn’t run that many plays, just great execution on a few plays. Sound Familiar?
I too was sad watching the OSU’s, Baylor’s, and WVU’s of the world pass us by.

There are a few rules that I try to enforce, one of the biggest is no name-calling of any sort, not to a anyone on DTN, but it also applies to just about everyone. It just creates issues and even if it’s being clever or funny, I think it’s the best policy and helps keep things relatively civil. Other rules (not just for you, but overall) are no racist, homophobic, religious or political comments. Craig James is a tricky one and so I’m a little more lenient on that, but I really dislike any sort of political talk on DTN (as well as the other stuff).
Other than that, welcome to DTN!

Dana wins a BCS bowl in his first year as a head coach
Gundy wins it within the first five years. Dang why can’t our coaches win a freaking BCS bowl! Dana inherited a top 25 team and turned it to a BCS contender. Gundy inherited an average ok state and turned it into a BCS contender. Leach could not even get to a BCS bowl and Tubs inherited a top 25 team, brought in a highly ranked recruiting class and then turned it to crap. I was not happy seeing the Orange bowl. Though, I feel happy for Dana.

Patience. Leach had us very close, and how do we like 5-7.
In the 60 minutes video I remember Scott Pelley asked why Leach has not won the big one, I don’t remember who the sports analysts was, but he said, “Just give him time.”
Hance and Company were impatient. Hell, OU and Texas were in their hay day and we still tied in 2008. Hance blew it, he fired Leach and now both Texas and OU are down a little. You think Gundy wins if OU and Texas are like OU and Texas of 2008. I don’t think so.

These last 2 seasons did nothing but pull us down further. The time to capitalize would have been 2010 or this past season but of course we were fighting the wind and injuries.

"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
You think Gundy wins if OU and Texas are like OU and Texas of 2008?
You can just look at Ok State in 2008 and answer that question…
Tech vs Ok State…
2008: Tech wins big at home and finishes above in conference
2009: OSU wins by 7 in Stillwater and finishes one game above in conference
Pretty closely matched….
Then something happened after 2009 and they continued up and we…. well… we didn’t…

Time ... and
Didn’t just need time … he needed money also, every time a new coaching job opened Leach was off interviewing…. Let me be clear I don’t blame Leach for this, he has proven his market value is 2.5 mil a year … tear is in my eye of just how close we where .. could have thrown some money a Defensive Coordinator ….and away we go…..
"we did a lot of things well, but there are several areas that need improving, our idea of moving forward is to do things that make you improve" - Jason Garrett
Gundy’s Cowboys peaked at the right time. This year OU and Texas were both down. The year TTU peaked, UT and OU were playing lights out. OSU right now is light years ahead of Tech and will continue to build on that gap. As for Dana, he is doing a great job. It is going to be tough getting our tails kicked by Leach’s offense next year. Not to discount what he did but didnt his team have around 3 or 4 losses? The big east champ usually is not a 0 or 1 loss team.

Arizona Raider believes that if Tech was in the Big East
we would have been to four or five BCS bowls when Leach was here. It seems like in order to advance from the Big 12 into a BCS bowl, you have to be a top 5 team. When Leach was here, UT and OU were top 5 nearly every year. Arizona Raider would argue that the Big 12 South was the toughest division in college football.
by Arizona Raider on Jan 5, 2012 8:44 AM CST up reply actions
Agree
If we had Leach and were in the Big East or ACC we could have had our BCS bowl(s) already. Maybe even the MWC like TCU did. Sucks that some of these other schools coming in from weaker conferences can hold up the hardware that we can’t. That’s the price you pay for being in the Big 12 south I guess.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
I believe Boise State or Kanas State should have been in the Orange bowl
but it was an incredible record setting night for the Mountaineers. Great game by WVU and the mullet. It did make me sad remembering the good old days between 2000 and 2009 when Tech didn’t play football.
WVU (5-2) shares the Big East championship with Louisville(5-2) and Cincinnati (5-2). Louisville and last place Syracuse (1-6) and LSU beat WVU so I think it was a little lucky for a three loss team to be in the Orange bowl.
Actually should be the Sugar Bowl
The two teams in the Orange Bowl won their conference championships, and therefore had automatic bids to the BCS bowls. The two teams in the Sugar Bowl were at-large selections, both of them lower in BCS rankings than KSU or Boise. I think the match-up between Boise and K-State would have been really interesting to watch…..kind of like the KSU-OSU game.
An IQ test shows you how smart you would have been not to have taken it.
Leach had a BCS year. In a world with no 2 teams per conference arbitrary rule 11-1 gets you into a BCS bowl game

I’m thinking these guys are going to be scary in the Big 12. Dana has that offense clicking. I miss that kind of excitement.

Interestingly enough the offensive stats for 2011 are as follows:
#13: Texas Tech
#15: West Virginia

Scoring offense tells a different tale
http://www.cfbstats.com/2011/leader/national/team/offense/split01/category09/sort01.html
I’m not complaining. Offense was the least of our troubles this season. What concerns me on your chart is the yards per play. At 5.7 we have a yards per play equal to teams ranked around 50. Which is good & bad. Good because we must get a lot more plays in than most teams in college football. Bad because they aren’t as productive as you would hope.
But let me reiterate, I am not complaining about the offense. If Tech had had a defense ranked around 50 we might have won 8 or nine games with the way the offense played this year. Fix the defense & a lot of the angst of the last two years disappears.
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
So now you've got me wondering....
If our defense gets a little better, enough to keep the other team to less yards/play, but not good enough to keep them from eventually scoring…
Then we will have fewer offensive plays and may wind up with total offense ranking more proportional to our yards/play —> ~ 51st or so…
Wouldn’t that be great…
But seriously… you have put your finger on one thing about our offense that truly is pretty different – yards/play…
Tech’s National Rank (offense yards/play):
2007 – 3rd
2008 – 3rd
2009 – 17th
2010 – 43rd
2011 – 51st

I’ve always thought that NB is trying to do what Tuberville asks, which is run the ball about 25 times a game and do what he wants to do, which is pass at a rate of 65% to 70%. I know it’s Troy, but NB’s last year at Troy had him at 6.5 YPP, which would be about top 10 this year. In 2009, it was #9.

I think you're right...
It would be nice to see:
- A clear definition of Tub’s objectives for the adjustments to NB’s Troy offense
(not just run ~ 30%, but what he’s trying to accomplish by doing so; something measurable)
- How we are performing against those objectives
Then maybe I can see some progress… rather than what looks to be a less effective offense..

In general, I think there are more than statisitical objectives being goaled.
It may be more like effectiveness, which for running could be numbers, but more than mere averages.
I really doubt that there is some kind of balance split that is part of a goal. That is self defeating. If a team is able to run on another rather that pass, that team should run more that game, vice versa for reversed circumstances.
I have always believed that there is no real driver on part of the HC to run, run, run the ball, but there is to be able to run effectively when a play is called.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.

Speaking of Tommy's comments this week, I had a thought.
Since we cannot be Air Raid anymore, why can’t we at least be more like Stanford. They run the ball alot, but they also pass for more than 300 yards per game. I am not running, get it, away from Air Raid, but if we must run the ball, this is who I hope Tommy models himself after.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
I'm afraid we are
going to lose Wheeler and then our class will be maybe top 50.
I don’t think the loss of one player makes the formula for a particular recruiting service drop that significantly. Rivals currently has TTU at #21 (I think). The formula is based off of a lot of things, but it would not be accurate to say that the class would drop 30 spots if Wheeler went somewhere else. It would be disconcerting, sure, but not drop the class by that amount overall.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
to be fair
Leacherhere didn’t say it’d drop us TO 50, he said we’ll maybe be “top 50”, presumably instead of “top 25”. I could believe that losing Wheeler would drop us out of the top 25 for recruiting class.
I guess, but it seemed to imply a drop of more than 30 spots as TTU would “be maybe top 50”. So technically, yes, TTU could be #1 or #50 and he’d be accurate. Just wanted to note that the Rivals formula doesn’t work like that. You can see how some have guessed as to how the formula works (it’s top secret) here as far back as 2008:

Anybody fear keeping Wheeler

Any news on Art Kaufman - official DC yet?
Just wondering if he’s been offered a contract and signed yet? If not, I would also like to know what might be the hold up(s). I suspect “$$$” and term/length. Regardless I’d like this to happen soon so we can move forward.
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
I hope we are not trying to instal a Clemson type stopping the run defense here for the next season
Because these defenses don’t work against spread pass offenses. They might work in the SEC or in weaker conferences like the ACC or Big East but not here.
Looks like a real Tubs D tackle
Gosh, I loved watching our poor D do this over and over—aaarrghhh!

OU and UT just thought they were thru with Leach’s air-raid- kick-your-ass-come-from-behind

As I have posted it earlier, its not just the offense
Offense ranking for 2011:
- Texas Tech
- West Virginia
It’s not just the numbers. We’re missing an intangible somewhere. We need to get that back to become competitive again. It maybe an improved defense or it maybe being a little more aggressive and throwing downfield or mixing it up a dominant running game to chew up the clock in between our quick strike touchdowns, or it may just be building a better team chemistry (which strangely disappeared after the OU game, media promotion of Adam James, and Leach interview of Alex Torres). Something went wrong somewhere that put us into this tail spin. Maybe it was Glasgow, maybe it was cTT, may be it was Adam James, or maybe it was Neal Brown. But hopefully, our head coach will be able to get the team back on track. After all that’s why coaches get paid the millions they do. If not we are back in the HC market yet again next year, which is terrible for a program to have to change coaches so frequently.

Outside of the OU game ...
our offense never really clicked as compared to previous teams. Arizona Raider thinks last night is the result of 15 or more practices in preparation for the game, motivation to prove everyone wrong, momentum from the defensive turnovers, and breaking the will of Clemson’s defense with a 35 point outburst in the 2nd quarter.
by Arizona Raider on Jan 5, 2012 2:21 PM CST up reply actions
What would have happened if they started throttling down... controlling the clock...
at 28 – 17?
Or 35 – 20?
Do they still score 14 pts in the last 2 minutes of the first half?
Then what?
