Texas Tech Football | January Recruiting Update
We're about three weeks away from National Signing Day (NSD), which is February 1, 2012.
De-Commits Happen Everywhere
I'm not trying to make light of the fact that Texas Tech has had three de-commitments that Texas Tech has had, which would include OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai, WR Marcus Johnson and OL Christian Okafor. Again, I wish that these players would have chosen Texas Tech, but it's nothing to get upset about (in terms of disliking those high school kids for making a commitment and then backing out of it, as they are allowed to change their mind until NSD) but it happens everywhere.
DB DeVante Harris de-committed from Oklahoma, and was apparently OU's highest rated defensive player. WR Thomas Johnson de-committed from Texas, and is the #32 player in the country. This isn't an opportunity for me to make light of their situations, which is why I don't make too big a deal out of these sorts of things, but maybe I should as I think these sorts of things generate a lot of traffic. Either way, the truth of the matter is that it happens to just about every school and it just isn't something that happens to Texas Tech.
These kids are making huge decisions that will affect their lives for at least a year, hopefully 5 years, and they need to feel 100% comfortable with that decision, so you won't ever hear me bemoan a player changing on signing day or prior to signing day or you won't hear me celebrate too loudly if a player switches a commit to Texas Tech in the last minute.
Where Is The Defensive Coordinator?
This topic has dropped off a bit as Texas Tech is going a couple of weeks without a defensive coordinator. Everything that I've read and heard says that the job is Art Kaufman's, the former defensive coordinator at North Carolina, so what's the hold up? I started to think that this may be a situation similar to when Billy Clyde Gillispie was rumored to be the only candidate at Texas Tech, but there appeared to be a week or so delay between when he was rumored to be the only candidate and when he was actually hired. That time-frame may have actually been longer, but the point is that there was a delay. Because Gillispie had not been formally retained, it allowed him to visit possible commits and recruits without any sort of worry about a recruiting violation.
I don't know if this benefits head coach Tommy Tuberville in that without a coordinator it permits him to make more visits or if it also permits Kaufman to make visits with players, like Gillispie, without the problem of the number of visits limited. I think it's just something to consider, and while we may be concerned that a defensive coordinator hasn't been named, the move may be intentional and it may benefit Texas Tech.
Rankings Updates
Whenever I did the profiles for all of the JUCO's that committed, 24/7 Sports was the one site that was lagging a bit in rating some of the players and didn't even have profiles for some of them. Well, that's been fixed an so the sidebar is completely updated in terms of rankings and and the cumulative average. Guys like WR Sadale Foster, FS Austin Stewart and CB Bruce Jones either got graded or profiles with 24/7 Sports. Surprisingly, Foster is given a relatively high grade, 3-star and 85, as he was generally regarded as a 2-star player by Rivals and Scout. Just something to think about.
Also, CB Thierry Nguema was given a profile by 24/7 Sports and have given him a 2-star rating and grade.
The recruiting data can be found here on the Google.
Green Out? Whatever Happened to Hartsfield?
I trust what RRS.com does and they've removed DE Desimon Green from the commitment list. When I did this on Friday morning, the cumulative average only went down 0.3, which may or may not be a big deal. I'm still trying to figure out if that is significant. In any event, from what I've heard, this may be a grade issue with Green, who initially didn't qualify coming out of high school, so he went to Hargrave Military Academy, and he may be going to JUCO due to those grades. I'm not sure, but either way, I took him off DTN's list.
Remember LB Terrell Hartsfield? I do too, but I haven't heard anything about him. I think what happened is that Hartsfield originally attended Hargrave and then ended up going to Copiah-Lincoln C.C. where he registered 67 tackles, 8 sacks and 2 forced fumbles this past year. I couldn't find anything recently that even seems to indicate that Hartsfield is still on the radar and I somewhat thought that Hartsfield was going to just go a year at JUCO since he had already spent a year at Hargrave. This may be a situation where Hartsfield still has to qualify, or may have problems qualifying. Hartsfield was named to the MACJC First Team All-State team. I'd love for this to be one of those things that we don't think about, but is a talented player and Prunty is still keeping in contact Hartsfield.
Who Else is on the Radar?
This is a little bit quirky, but I think that JUCO RB Damien Williams has a visit scheduled for later this month. ESPN says that Williams has a visit scheduled on January 27, 2011, but I think that's off a year as Scout says that Williams has a visit scheduled for January 24, 2012. With the injuries to Eric Stephens and DeAndre Washington, the graduation of Aaron Crawford and the question mark that is Ronnie Daniels, this is somewhat of a need as the only healthy scholarship running back going into the spring is Kenny Williams. There was some thought that Sadale Foster could also work in at running back, but an actual running back that has the opportunity to compete for some carries. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Daniels eventually works his way back onto the team and I even think he practices during the spring, but he'll be on thin ice from this point forward.
Since I don't have any inside information or any sort of subscription based service, the only way that I know how to do this is to take a look at the offer list for ESPN, 24/7 Sports and Scout. I couldn't find any sort of similar function for Rivals, which is why I didn't include that site. I ended up going with the 24/7 Sports site to narrow down the results. The Scout site gives you six pages or so of possibilities and I think that most players have narrowed their college choices, i.e. at the very least players have narrowed their radars. The ESPN site also isn't really keeping track of who is really wanting to choose Texas Tech and who has Texas Tech made an offer.
So here's the list:
RB Damien Williams (6-0/205 Arizona W. C.C.)
ATH Todd Mays (6-0/200 Olive Branch, MS)
TE Justin Chandler (6-3/225 Kingwood, TX)
CB Joseph McClary (5-8/163 St. Thomas Aquinas, FL)
S Brandon Butler (6-1/180 Boyd Anderson, FL)
CB Cameron Cole (6-1/195 Fort Scott, C.C.)
WR De'Joshua Johnson (5-10/165 Arizona W. C.C.)
CB Tony Grimes (5-11/180 Arizona W. C.C.)
DT Jarran Reed (6-4/295 Hargrave M.A.)
RB Robert Lewis (5-9/155 South Gate, CA)
There are a couple of things to remember. This list is totally unofficial and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if none of these players, except for maybe Williams and Mays didn't have legitimate offers. In fact, if you look at Reed and Chandler's pages from Rivals, they aren't rated and have zero offers.
So what I did, is take a look at the 24/7 Sports link and find the kids that they report as having a semblance of interest in Texas Tech. I didn't list any interest in any player that was already committed to another school or had "cool" or no interest.
Not knowing anything about Chandler, I'd love to how or why there haven't been more effort to snag a tight end, but I'd also say that if there is a position that doesn't warrant a significant offer, i.e. there's little talent at the tight end spot for the year, then that offer and scholarship spot is better spent somewhere else.
Lots of defensive back types and I don't know how accurate that is because I really think that when the staff signed or received commits from CB Bruce Jones, FS Austin Stewart, LB/S Chris Payne and CB Theirry Nguema, I think the staff is pretty much done with the secondary.
I don't think there is some sort of huge prospect out there, like Delvon Simmons and Branden Jackson last year. I'd also guess that there are some prospects out there that aren't going to be on any recruiting services' radars due to the fact that there is a new defensive staff, except for Prunty, and those coaches may have some thoughts about where a player is leaning for the coach's former school.
If you can find any information, feel free to post it. I did find this tweet and photo of DL coach Terry Price with looks like a defensive lineman that uses the Twitter handle 2womenplusKB. That's all I've got.
I'm also posting the recruiting table after the jump.

Great post on recruiting heading toward February signing day!
"Appreciate the target you put on my back. Last time you did that, you almost got me fired." Tommy Tuberville 2006
Watched a bit of the Army All-Star game
and am fairly sure Michael Starts ended up not participating due to his shoulder injury (I didn’t see him or hear his name called, at any rate), but Dominique Wheeler made at least one impressive catch and run.
Great Job
I don’t think we’ll ever see Hartsfield and when a Hargrave prospect who was placed there by a school talks about visiting other schools, he isn’t going to qualify.
I think Damian Williams would qualify as a big name, if we were able to land him. I expect OU to make a big push for him when he visits and with their RB situation, he could be their starter in 2012.
DT in the picture
Insider but It tells of an underclassman DT that just got an offer I’m thinking that is the guy in the picture with coach Price

FYI, he’s a 2013 player, so he wouldn’t be in the mix until next February. Good find!
And in the story linked, it says that OC Brown and Prunty are recruiting him, but the photo is the player and new DL coach Price.

I am pretty much where you are, Seth, regarding decommits. Everyone gets to make his own decision, everyone has the right to use the rules to his advantage. If a guy commits to a team to help keep the agressive recruiting to a minimum, then makes a last minute run on who he wants to really consider after his last HS season, more power to him. I like the notion that who ever we get wants to be at TTU.
I don’t know if this benefits head coach Tommy Tuberville in that without a coordinator it permits him to make more visits or if it also permits Kaufman to make visits with players
It is a double benefit if Kaufman is talking with recruits. With no DC on staff currently, an HC can fill the recruiting role behind that empty spot allowing him more leeway opposite NCAA limits on HC participate—or so I read last week on another site. (When you have been around this business as long as our HC, you know how to do these things )
Rivals shows Marquel Combs with an offer, medium interest and only TTU listed as a school of interest.

But he may also be a 2013 guy, his Hudl profile says that he was a freshman in 2011:

RE: The DC
Isn’t their some sort of “dead” period between posting a position and filling it at Tech? I was thinking it was 10 days … could that be the hold up?

The lawyers who would be drawing up the contract
Probably just made it back into the office. Also, the aforementioned grey area to be taken advantage of in recruiting. I assume that if Tuberville hadn’t gotten the guy he wanted to the Agreement in Principle stage, other candidates would have continued to pop up on the radar.

Yes there are...
In fact, there are quiet periods and actual dead periods. If you are a football junkie, here are the dates: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/AMA/recruiting_calendars/2011/I/Football.pdf
So, are you saying that the new DC can recruit during the dead period as long as he technically hasn’t been hired by Tech, not sure that I am comfortable with that type of behavior.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
Yep, I think it happens quite a bit (not just at TTU, but like with OU and M. Stoops as I bet M. Stoops had a pretty good idea he was going to be the DC for some time) and I think Gillispie did it last year, although I don’t know if it was a dead period.

Then, okay your hired and we won’t tell anyone so that you can go break the rules without worry. What other rules are you allowed to break as long as you are not technically on the payroll? I would think that even if not on the payroll one would be acting as an agent of the university regardless of contract status.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
This the only one I know of but I am sure there are others.

We don’t know that we are actually doing this sort of thing currently and I hope that we aren’t because it seems somewhat slimy. I would think this sort of thing would if successful send the wrong message to recruits.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
No we don’t know for sure but it is fairly common. Hell, Leach just hired his DC today. Its a fairly common thing that coaches do so I guess I don’t think it is slimy. What Saban does dropping players like flies is slimy.

If I have a coach in my living room during the dead period and he says it’s okay because he doesn’t really start his job until tomorrow, I would be thinking that here is a guys that plays fast and loose with the rules. I don’t think that I would trust him with my kid.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
What about a coach that looks your kid in the eyes and says that he promises to give him a full ride scholarship for four years and then cuts him after a year. That’s Saban.

Lookey, Lookey, Lookey, what we have here:
This just in from coachingsearch.com:
“Texas Tech: Look former North Carolina defensive coordinator Art Kaufman to accept the defensive coordinator job at Texas Tech within the next 48 hours.”
According to the link above, the dead period for staff to contact athletes ends January 12th. He won’t be a staff member until then. How convenient!

De-commits
Losing some would not bother me as much if we were gaining some. I don’t know of any highly regarded recruits who have recently de-committed from brand-x and committed to Tech. If kids are re-thinking their commitments, it doesn’t appear that too many are thinking about us. What does that tell you?
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
At this point, a lot of this is already set. There are a handful of players that are de-committing, but for the most part, I think that there is a comfort level between the players and coaches, the player knows that they have a scholarship, which is what they’ve worked towards, while the coaches think they are getting a talented player. I think that some of the open scholarships went to the JUCO players (Fortenberry, Payne, Jones, Steward, Foster, Smith and Adams). If you’re looking for big names, then you’re probably not going to get it, but you can also think (or hope) that these players will pay dividends next year.
Go Raiders . . .

I agree on the JUCO's...we need kids who can play right away and
K-State has shown over the years that they can win with JUCO talent. Ultimately, it’s on Tubs to build out a team. So far, he shows no signs of channeling Bill Snyder or any other notable coaches who are known for doing more with less. Maybe he’ll step up his game and surprise us.
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
No News is Good News ?
So is it safe to say that Tubs may be less apt to publicize the commits with the fear of Texas, Fish Bait, or Oklahoma stealing them?
"we did a lot of things well, but there are several areas that need improving, our idea of moving forward is to do things that make you improve" - Jason Garrett
I don’t think I understand, no coach (this goes for any coach in any college) can comment on a commit until they send in their LOI.

???? --- So how does this work ?????
So when I go to these web sites and it says “committed” not “signed” …… how is that communicated?
I mean each high school kid does not have its on press team… I assumed this came from the tech athletic department …. how do these sites get there info ????
"we did a lot of things well, but there are several areas that need improving, our idea of moving forward is to do things that make you improve" - Jason Garrett
This is a mystery. Some sites talk and contact the kids and ask them about if they have committed. I think this is mostly how it happens. So, yes, Texas Tech or any university cannot comment on any players until they have signed a letter of intent, which doesn’t happen until February 1, 2012 for the most part and some time in late December for players that want to enter for the spring semester.

One Scholarship Available...
According to word around the water cooler (aka Chris Level/Aaron Dickens at RRS), there is only one scholarship slot available and the staff feels it will be RB or DL. Everything else is set and we shouldn’t expect any big surprises, unless someone like Trey Keenan decommitts/signs with someone else (which is possible he may go to OK-State). If that does happen, expect some scambling to fill that vacated offer.
I think the staff has done a great job getting into these houses early. The reason why we had some big names last year was because that was Tuberville’s 1st full year of recruiting and got Prunty and company going early. I think we will see this continue to 2013, etc.
I hope Keenan stays, really need that offensive line depth. Too bad about Cooper Washington, hope the best for him.

Didn’t realize you basically said the same thing in an earlier post. Don’t think we will see a surprise “Cooper Washignton” switch on signing day, but never say never. BTW: hearing that Washington isn’t on the team anymore.
Didn't qualify out of high school??
Really? Is it really THAT hard to make enough of a grade in high school to get into a state school? Is this because of SAT/ACT scores or HS GPA?
No offense meant to OSR and blackbeard who clearly got out of high school only because the teachers couldn’t stand the thought of them coming back for another year.

They are a disgrace to the population of people they supposedly serve. It is very reasonable under present circumstances to envision a situation where a kid from Dallas or Houston wouldn’t be able to qualify.

there are lots of issues
that end with fire them all. They all need to be at least improved upon, (which statistically isn’t hard to do)

Not confirmed...
Just mentioned that I have heard through a couple sources. I also heard a comment made by Chris Level. Take it with a grain of salt until we see his name on/off the roster.
Cooper
This is from a source in Muleshoe where Cooper is from is that he was in over his head physically. While everyone was practicing he was in weight room trying to catch up but unable to. If he was that behind imagine what he would have been at ZeroU. And apparently in the doghouse with coaches.
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson
Just Maybe
First year Tubs – typical for a new coach and program ‘regime’
Second year Tubs – bad offensive schemes and delivery plus a sad defense, but it was a fresh DC and that showed. Howevs, intensity and preparation was apparent in the spring
Sooo, Third year Tubs could surprise. Offense needs to improve consistency, offensive blocking and run support (sensitive subject these days) and 3rd/4th down efficiency, but D is the obvious bull with no nuts in the china cabinet.
I feel more optimistic, maybe blind optimism, but I feel possibilities of beating ISU, TX, and few other mid-level programs KU, OSU, and K-state (hint to some sarcasm). Afterall, I kinda called losing to aTm and beating OU in a best/worst case scenario last season…..

I love your optimisim, and I am hopeful as well; and I am personally demanding 8 wins next year from my HC,
but this team went backwards, and did not improve, except for the last two games. After OU, this team could not have beaten New Mexico. Juco players are hit and miss. Very few freshman make an impact, and if we are lucky to get three freshman to make an impact, and five JUCO players come through, then even at best, how can you be so optimistic.
