DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2012-01-09
ODDS AND ENDS | It's really amazing. Life prior to kid, I could watch any game at any time and there were no problems. Post-kid, I've got the Baylor vs. Texas Tech game sitting on the DVR and I really want to watch it, but haven't found the time. I'll get to it eventually, hopefully.
Later today, I've got a January update for Texas Tech football recruiting and where I try to make you feel better about everything that's happening with the football team and recruiting.
Per SB Nation's Brian Floyd, this Arkansas St. fan wins the internet.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | The Lady Raiders rallied and won against Mizzou on Saturday, 69-63 (box score).
G Chynna Brown took the lead off the bench, scoring 17 points while F Shauntal Nobles had 8 rebounds. LAJ's Davis Just has your post-game story and here's Brown:
"Coach Curry tells me to play fast," Brown said. "That’s what she always tells us. Most of the time everybody is watching me do the pull-up. This time I tried to get to the goal and get an and-one or get the foul since everybody knows I’m sort of a pull-up jump shooter."
Brown finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also added three assists and three rebounds.
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | I know enough about the game in that it was close at halftime, but Baylor pulled away in the second half (box score and post game quotes) and I'm guessing that head coach Billy Gillispie doesn't like moral victories:
"I’m not really a hang around kind of guy, I couldn’t care less about hanging around, I want to dominate, I’m a dominate kind of guy and not a hang around kind of guy and again just going back to making plays and not taking anything away from them but when 55 (Pierre Jackson) came into the game it was a totally different game and he totally controlled the game like a point guard should and we didn’t do a good enough job of following the game plan as far as how to guard the ball screen and taking his right hand away from him and helping from certain spots, but you have to give him credit he made all the plays. As far as hanging around, no I’m not into it."
LAJ's Nick Kosmider had his game story and a notebook as well as an article from today. This is PF Robert Lewandowski after the game on Saturday:
Senior Robert Lewandowski, who tallied eight points and three rebounds but also had six turnovers, said the team didn’t match its intensity from the first half during the second.
"We came out dead, me especially," Lewandowski said. "I feel like I take the blame for this loss. I didn’t play very well. I feel like I let a lot of people of down.
"There are a lot of intangibles that go into winning, and everybody on the team felt like we could have won. But we didn’t. It’s back to practice, and we’ve got to keep getting better, keep getting tougher."

BCG is getting the job done!
I was amazed at the difference in the BB team Sat. compared to start of season. Baylor was the first game I have been to since Nov. Tech will surprise some people in conference play. This team gets after if on defense and our scoring is coming around. Tech was in this game nearly the whole way and had a chance. I was pleasantly surprised Sat. and am excited to go to more games. In my opinion the future is bright for TT BB.

I’ll just put this here:
Texas A&M Might Just Sue The Denver Broncos
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2012/1/9/2693053/texas-am-denver-broncos-lawsuit-jason-cook
Just about an hour after the Denver Broncos pulled off a wild win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL playoffs, someone had to rain on the parade. Denver was in a state of jubilation, and the cheers hadn’t even died down when Texas A&M hopped into the fray all angry about something. That something was — you guessed it — the use of “12th Man.”

Problem with A&M...
is that they lay claim to a ton of so called traditions. Using the bathroom at half time is probably an aggie tradition as well.

back when we did not play football at the turn of the 21st century,
aTm had a tradition of losing.

Uh oh....hope they don't sue us now....
"They challenged us. They said, 'Here, try to run past us, try to run inside us.' And they were better at preventing that than we were throwing and catching it." --Mike Leach
By my count, A&M has at least 4 lawsuits ready to go from Wildcard Weekend alone
So many “12 Men in the huddle” penalties. Seriously though, NFL, a modest proposal: don’t huddle.
Hoping this spirals into the ridiculous levels of intellectual property litigiousness that goes on in the tech industry
Teams suing each other over who holds the patent on “moving the ball down the field and scoring touchdowns in an efficient manner using a strategic combination of both passing and running plays”
Any News on the Defensive Coordinator?
I haven’t read anywhere that Art Kaufman is a done deal? I know these positions are starting to fill up nationally? Nice have this done with lots of time before the first wednesday in Feb!

I’ve got some thoughts on that later this morning. Look for a post @ 10:00 am.

Tech MBB has been encouraging in B12 play
After beating only lackluster non-conf opponents, I thought they might be in over their heads in the B12. But they have competed fairly well. Unfortunately, the team is not deep and there is little room for error. I still think Ws will be a bit hard to come by and will only result from solid execution in all phases.
BCG is clearly setting the bar high. He is not afraid to call out poor play, but makes it clear that the players can and will improve. As a player, I would be encouraged by a coach who points out my weaknesses, but still believes in me. BCG also makes no excuses for the team (youth, new coaches, etc.) and takes his share of the responsibility. Refreshing!
