WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY

Gotta be JJ Lollar. Kid’s a powerlifting champ and will be like a garbage can full of rocks in the middle of the defensive line.

Seriously - even being a freshman, he would be a huge improvement to the line.

I know there’s a lot he needs to learn, and I know that freshman usually can’t make an impact, but if the kid can gain just 20lbs in the offseason and keep everything else intact, he’ll make a difference over last year that will be noticeable.

Once again, A+ job by Tubs and Co. on their recruiting effort. However, recruiting was the only high note in 2011. Hopefully not the same for 2012. We’re better on paper. That’s for sure. Gotta win it on the field tho.

New OL coach Jim Turner is no longer the OL coach, per Mike Graham:

Jim Turner resigned from Texas Tech yesterday for the Miami Dolphins. Tuberville has hired replacement. Can’t announce till tomorrow.

Mike Sherman was named the OC for the Dolphins, so there’s your connection.

Not sure if the transfer was announced. Maybe it will be announced today. I think Turner is Sherman’s nephew or something like that, so he’s also family.

Maybe it was just rumors but I could have swore I read one of the OL from the aggies transferred or would be transferring because of the coach.

1. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Tough……I’d say either Keenon Ward or Reginald Davis. I guess since Ward is listed as an athlete, I’ll go with Davis. I like the adversity he’s fought through in life and where he has elevated himself as a young man. Plus, he looks very beastish in his highlights.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Gotta go with JJ Lollar just because I get a very Whitlockish feel from this guy.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Javon Bell – dude looks like a playmaker.

4. WHICH JUCO DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Any of them that can cover, tackle, and cause turnovers. I thought we needed a JUCO LB in the mix, maybe Will Smith will be kicked off the LOS or Austin Stewart will be placed a little closer.

5. GIVE YOUR OVERALL GRADE WITH AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CLASS.

I’d say an A-. I think the staff did a pretty good job of filling the gaps that need filling.

After a 5-7 season, this recruiting class could have deteriorated. But Tubs and Prunty have held it together. I have been critical of Tubs in the past, but on this day, he deserves an “atta boy”.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Michael Starts. IMO the best of the class.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Jevon Bell

4. WHICH JUCO DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Will Smith

5. GIVE YOUR OVERALL GRADE WITH AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CLASS.
I give this class a solid B. Lots of talented JUCO players that will infuse talent into the defense right away. The best thing about this class is the holding power it had throughout the season. Kids stayed true to their committments. Coaches score big for keeping this class together after such a disasterous season and the negative recruiting used that was more than likely used against us.

Im always impressed with the playmakers we get on offense especially at QB and WR.
But in 2012 we are gonna need all the help we can get from these DL, LB, and CB.
So i hope these Defensive players pan out.

we got 5-6 DBs if the staff can’t find some of these that can play they need to be fired.

it goes to show that we have a rep for good O play... even after leach is gone

our rep for bad D doesnt exactly inspire defensive recruits… or at least it seems that way

by SPACECITYTECHSAN on Feb 1, 2012 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

1. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Either Michael Starts or Dominique Wheeler. Starts seems like someone that can open lanes and just dominate other players. We need this on the o-line since this is where games are won and lost hince 2008 our best o-line and best year. Wheeler just looks like he will be fun to watch.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
J.J Bynum Because he is big enough and can add some more weight to a very small D-line. This is where we are in the most need. I do not think he will start next year but by his sophmore (third year hopefully) he will be starting and making an impact on this team.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Don’t know much but Javon Bell. He can add some depth to this collection of good receivers. I hope he is able to do well.

4. WHICH JUCO DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
I am excited about Will Smith because he can make a difference now. In a position that had so many troubles this season we need someone who is just simply talented and Smith is.

5. GIVE YOUR OVERALL GRADE WITH AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CLASS
it is an A. For Texas Tech to steal a recruit from Alabama (as long as he can pass) This is a great class and gives us an opportunity to win tomorrow. The Juco additions I think was a good idea and we need some help now. Tubs knows his job is on the line and luckily we have UT, OU, and WVU here. I may just buy some season tickets again.

by Tball on Feb 1, 2012 3:53 PM CST reply actions

my top 3 star/ less than 80 point guys- just to make it not so redundant

1. Ward (local talent) will not play QB here but will be interesting to see where he will fit — the 4+ favorite is Wheeler (based on wildcat on his video)
2. Flannigan (need LB help, he is local to Houston) i liked his vids, including nike drill video thought he held his own -Starts is the 4+ fav and he played offense… will be exciting to see what he can do on that side of the
3.Foster might suprise us… Bell is the obvious 4+ fav… hopefully he can give more than kennard gave us last year
4. Stewart I guess.. wouldve loved Kass Everett.. hard to be sure what these CC DBs can give us.
5. B+ in general , No 4 star linebacker or DB…. No Tight End at all, weak at running back.. If the two recruiting loses to OU dont happen (Kass & Darien) then its an A class… I am not expecting the Bama steal to qualify so that is just padding the class IMO.. I hope I am wrong…
B+ in light of all schools, A+ class for Tech… ATTA boy Tubs & Co… not sippin the kool aid yet but i am excited today.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
J.J Lollar. Dude looks like he is a mirror image of Colby Whitlock….just ask Colt McCoy if he remembers him.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
I’m really excited to see the hype behind Javon Bell. I believe or KR/PR game needs some serious upgrading, and with Bell and Foster, I think they just were.

4. WHICH JUCO DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?
Austin Stewart is a guy I think could make a impact here. If COdy Davis whiffs on one more tackle, I swear I’ll…
Ah, I wont do anything. i’ll just be really, really angry.

5. GIVE YOUR OVERALL GRADE WITH AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CLASS.
B -…..I wish we could have got Kass Everett, and maybe 2013 is the year Tubs finally focuses on CORNER BACKS (YES,REAL CORNER BACKS WHO CAN PLAY MAN TO MAN DEFENSE AND ALSO PLAY THE RUN AND HAVE BIG 12 SPEED)…

All in all, I think we have a solid class.

Now, Coaches, do your job and coach these boys up.

but it looks like Tech did really well. We don’t have a history of too many top 25 classes, no matter how good the team was in the past. I’ll take it. Now, time to coach ’em to succeed.

No favorites

I think this is a “B” grade recruiting year, simply because there were no 5 star and a lot of three star signees, plus some lower rated ones. That does not mean there is no talent. The problem is that there are a few more CC or JC players and not enough from high school. This because I want to see the players here for more than two years. Hopefully, those high rated JC and CC players will contribute immediately. Of course, the coaches have to do their part, too, regardless of whether or not there is enough talent. If these players do pan out, Tech could really be good, FAST!

Press Conference

When Tuberville said “it was fun” he should have had a smile on his face or showed a little bit more emotion. He just had no emotion at this press conference. He might have been sick because he looked tired and sounded like he had a cold or allergies.

The press conference was pretty detailed and CTT provided a lot of information on various players. I wish you could hear the questions being asked so you could know if he was answering them all the way or going off on tangents.

I hope these player’s talents are reflected on the field and on the scoreboard and in Tech’s football record with a lot of wins.

Agree...

I do believe he had a cold because watching TexasTech.com live feeds all day he was sniffing pretty good, occasionally wiping his nose and clearing his throat.

I’m glad he said he said “No, I’m not a fan of the” the silver helmets. I’m not a fan of them either. I’m sure the players in the ’50’s said the same thing.

My 2 cents...

1. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY? Davis, Ward and Wheeler are a close one. All will see time this Fall. Their speed will help stretch the field. If I had to narrow one, I’d say Ward because of his versatility.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY? Anthony Smith. He bring much needed depth and meat on the defensive line. JJ Lollar (aka JJ Bynum) will be good too, but I’d like to see him put some weight on. Newbold is a close second. He has good size and good speed for a CB. He’ll match up with the 6’ receives OU/Texas have.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY? Overall, Javon Bell. He will provide the necessary speed to help stretch the field. Sadale Foster could be the sleeper of the class. The only 2 star recruit, he has a motor. Will start out at RB.

4. WHICH JUCO DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY? Definately Smith and Stewart. Both are explosive and have a nose for the ball. Will bring needed help in the Fall.

5. GIVE YOUR OVERALL GRADE WITH AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CLASS. I give Coach Tuberville a “B” for this class. No surprises (defects) and was able to keep the kids attention away from a 5-7 2011. Getting Damien Williams from Arizona Western would have been nice, but it looked pretty clear he was signing with OU.

Watch out for Preferred Walk On Woodland Hills (Calif.) Pierce C.C. fullback Michael Pearson. 5’11, 255. Should open a few lanes for our RBs in 2012. His highlight reel is sick. Here are his 2011 highlights – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aB-TzV2Pjg

Love our WR's group and all the DB and LB.

Really glad to see Starts on the DL. I think we finished 3rd in the Big 12. That is two years in a row. Tommy has to get it done this year.

Another coach leaving. Even if it is Sherman’s ken, didn’t Tommy see this coming. Can you imagine what it must be like living in the Tommy household, total chaos. Geez.

"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.

The timing would suggest that Tubs & Turner had it worked out so that the announcement wouldn't happen until after signing day.

Also sounds as though he had the replacement lined up and ready to go. (still haven’t announced he’s inked a deal, so we’ll see…)

Turner got an offer to coach in the pro’s with people he knows well. That’s not a case of running away from Tubs, that’s taking advantage of a big opportunity. This would happen at any program 99% under any circumstances. The previous 2 D coordinator’s – yeah, those are on Tubs and he’ll deal with the consequences one way or another this year.

And, yeah, he has to get it done this year.

1. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

The qb, Nicklas, not so much because his is great, although he might be, but because his style of play supports a strong passing game.

2. WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Michael Starts, a guy who looks ready to play as a freshman, not that he will. Big kid with lots of look good.

3. WHICH JUCO OFFENSIVE SIGNEE ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Javon Bell, a wr who looks like he has it, very athletic—might be one of those YAC kind of guys.

Lee Adams, good looking DL, we need DL. But it could be the big ready to play looking linebacker, Will Smith.
