ODDS AND ENDS | Animated GIF's for January!!

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT | Good friends at Big East Coast Bias note that West Virginia and the Big East have reached a conditional settlement:

According to Mike Casazza and Jared Hunt of the Charleston (WV) Daily Mail, the Big East and West Virginia have reached a conditional settlement that would end their competing lawsuits and send West Virginia to the Big 12 in 2012. The settlement is for a total of $20 million, with West Virginia paying $11 million and the Big 12 Conference paying the other $9 million.

The deal, however, is no longer dependent upon Boise State being able to leave the Mountain West Conference and play football in the Big East as West Virginia's replacement in 2012. According to Casazza and Hunt, the Big East will still try and possibly take Boise State in 2012, but either way will take the $20 million and use it however it sees fit. Apparently, prior to this agreement, the Big East was unwilling to settle without a replacement, but now is willing to settle and take the payout from West Virginia without necessarily having a 2012 replacement in hand.

In other conference realignment news, NewsOK's Berry Tramel answers a bunch of Big 12 expansion questions, including a lot of thoughts on BYU.

RED RAIDER SOFTBALL | The Red Raiders beat San Diego St. 5-4 yesterday. Congrats!

RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | I'm not going to get a chance to preview tomorrow's game against Oklahoma today, but I'll have something up tomorrow. The game is in Lubbock and tip-off is at 7:00 pm. LAJ's Nick Kosmider writes about all of the problem numbers for Texas Tech and David Just also has some Lady Raider stuff. The Lady Raiders take on Iowa St. on Sunday, also in Lubbock, and the game will be on ESPN2.

TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | Baseball America has come out with their Big 12 preview and is picking Texas Tech to finish 7th. CF Barrett Barnes is listed as having the best raw power in the Big 12 and Jamodrick McGruder is the best base runner. Like it does every year, this team is going to make the NCAA Tournament as long as the pitching comes through.

Yesterday I didn't realize that Mike Graham's DMN story about DH Scott LeJeune and his anxiety disorder that kept him out all of last year was free on RRS.com and there's a lot more there at RRS.com, so go check it out. Also, LAJ's George Watson (beware video auto play) has a bit on yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Rip Griffin Park. Head coach Dan Spencer seems incredibly happy:

"You see it going up and you don’t know if they’re every going to get to a point of it being built," Tech head coach Dan Spencer said. "But it’s built and we’re a week away from getting to play in it and it’s very emotional. The things it’s done for this year’s club and for future clubs is huge, there’s no other way to describe it. It’s big, and we’re extremely grateful and excited."

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | I don't really know if it's news that the football schedule will come out today, but when AD Kirby Hocutt spoke at yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony, again, per LAJ's George Watson, he said that the football schedule would come out today:

"It’s time for the schedule to come out," Hocutt said Thursday, "but at the same time, even up until 7:30 (Wednesday) night we were having conversations about various adjustments within the schedule. It is going to come out (today) and I’m pleased with the end result. I think it will be one of the best home schedules we’ve possibly had in program history, or at least in quite some time. Unfortunately, given the circumstances we’ve faced, it’s a lot later than anyone wanted. But it will come out (today) and I think we’ll be pleased with the end results."

Good enough.

In searching through Twitter this morning, I ran across some things about some current students, most likely as walk-ons, making the football team. The ones I ran across were Miakel Williams who is from El Paso, apparently initially went to Air Force, played RB/DB/ST and I guess now is at Texas Tech (YouTube), and Xavier Henry who is from Snyder and played receiver (YouTube).

LAJ's Don Williams writes that OC Neal Brown wants players like Bradley Marquez, Javares McRoy and Sadale Foster to be a hybrid player:

"We want to create kind of a hybrid position," Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. "How Oregon used De’Anthony Thomas this year, we think Javares and Bradley, maybe SaDale, could kind of be an inside receiver, slash running back."

OC Brown also talked about RB Kenny Williams and RB Ronnie Daniels:

"I really think Kenny Williams will be one of our most improved players in the spring," Brown said. "I thought he showed some good signs in the Missouri and Baylor games. Ronnie has been great in our winter workouts so far. Coming off the suspension, he came back in great shape. He’s a guy that can really help us at that spot."

And OC Brown also had some telling things about RB Ben McRoy:

"We’d like to use his speed (at running back)," Brown said, "but he’s got to improve. He’s got to eliminate mental mistakes and get his run reads and be more disciplined overall."

Last, but not least, OC Brown said that RB Eric Stephens and RB DeAndre Washington could redshirt next year, if necessary. I'm okay with that.

Medical Redshirt would be great for our two injured RB's

That would really stack the talent in that area.

Washington & Stephens

Redshirt those guys and have them healthy for the ‘13 season. We have plenty of horse power at the RB position with Daniels, Williams and Marquez. Those 3 combined make one hell of a backfield. I like the hybrid position idea Brown speaks of. That will create more of a dual threat for defenses to defend.
Bring on the schedule! WVU, Oklahoma and Texas at home will definitely bring fans out to Lubbock. I’m really happy the WVU is on board and I think Tech could possibly forge a pretty good rivalry with these guys based on the high powered offenses both seem to live by.

I have literally never heard of this institution. Turns out they play in something called the NE-10. The Chargers went 10-1 last year before falling in the 2nd round of the NCAA Div. II playoffs. Wow.

TuBS has never beaten ISU, we will be outcoached by KSU, and Baylor will be a tossup. Will be a good year to take OSU and I think we win one against either TCU/WVU.

I agree

I think we beat TCU but not WVU. The whole upcoming season leaves a ton of unknowns. It’s all going to be based on what kind of defense we field. The momentum against the cupcakes has to be a good showing. If we are barely beating our non-con foes like last season we are in deep trouble once more.

Its hard to predict wins and losses. I say we can get 7 wins but it all depends on how good the other teams are this year. KSU is going to be better, OSU, Baylor will probably not be as good as they were last year as they are losing talent in key positions. ISU owns us. Texas running game is getting better and we can’t stop the run.

by Techcuz on Feb 10, 2012 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

I agree and what concerns me is that the Big12 should be very competitive in 2012. I am afraid that tuBS will be a difference maker in some close games, so I am thinking 6-6 or maybe even 5-7.

Thoughts on ISU, KSU & Frogs...

ISU simply had more speed, which I believe has been rectified. KSU was a one shot wonder. Don’t really see them being any better than Tech next year. TCU is the wildcard in this whole thing. They are well coached, but not so sure about depth. They will be very competitive I can assure you.
We aren’t on the OSU, OU, WVU level yet. We might be able to beat TU, however they always play us tough,
Remember, Tommy only needs 7.

If Tommy doesn’t beat one of OSU, OU, UT, WVU or TCU he needs to go elsewhere and spread his wisdom. IMO losing to all of those named shows we have made no progress even if we make a bowl.

I'm not sure I see where adaptation the influx of offensive talent we have is a bad thing.

with no news of change, NB gets labeled predictable. When he explores ways to get more of these playmakers of the field, he is changing too much. The reality is we have more offensive talent than ever before and if the coaching staff didn’t get creative in getting these guys the ball, that would be a good reason to complain. The AirRaid evolved over the years to match talent at QB and receiver and if NB didn’t do the same it would be a disservice IMO. Offense is not our problem. When you consider the QB picks, injuries or suspensions to your top three running backs, top 4 receivers, and injuries to OL…..we still averaged roughly 33 points a game. We may give up 50 a game, but mark it down, we will be a top 10 offense in 2012.

Also, here is some insight from Neal on what happened midway through the season on offense.

After Stephens went down, and Moore got gimpy, defenses new we were not going to be able to run the ball, or stretch the field. They moved everyone to the center of the field to congest the crossing routes, and defend against any attempt we made at running the ball. They essentially dared us to go outside with the long ball and sideline screens, and we had ZERO talent to beat anyone man-to-man. The only success we saw was with Ward’s ability to be physical as a possession receiver, but he couldn’t beat anyone deep.

With no middle to throw to, and no athletes to get open outside, the picks began to escalate. Thus que the QB confidence issues.

Interestingly, the OU game was the anomaly. To the complete surprise of the staff, OU played us as if Stephens and Moore were still 100% and Torres, James and others carved them up over the middle. Then that opened up the outside, which then opened up the running game. Literally, OU’s arrogance or lack of prep cost them that game.

When Stephens went down his was a 1000 yard rusher, and our number two receiver. With him out defenses adapted, and we didn’t have the talent on the outside to make them pay.

OK, So the loss of 1.5 players

on offense so fundamentally changed what we were doing that it caused us to go from scoring 41 points against OU to putting up a meaningless 7 points against Iowa State, 6 points against Oklahoma State, 0 touchdowns against UT until we were down 38-6, but somehow managed to score 27 points against Mizzou and 42 points against Baylor?

Right.

Or you could argue that once we hit the Big 12, we were just good enough to win 2 out of our 9 conference games,

"This time it's different."

If you want to continue to marginalize the loss of a 1000 yard rusher,

your #2 receiver, and only deep threat….go right ahead. The fact is in all of your rants downplaying our key injuries, you have not offered a single explanation of why those injuries don’t matter. More over, you offer no rebuttal to how other defenses line-up due to those losses. For me the choice is simple. In the absence of an educated explanation that actual involves football analysis and not agenda, I’m going to side with Neal’s analysis. He broke down hours and hours of tape, to come to the conclusion of what our challenges were, and with all due respect that seems to be a more defend-able position to analyse from than where you sit.

Your 1.5 player jab is cute, but you might want to ask the Indianapolis Colts what the loss of one player can do if that player is central to your offense.

Try Crabtree’s ankle injury in late 2008. Result? One of the most embarrassing losses in school history to OU, near kiss to a bad Baylir team, embarrassing bowl loss. When you lose irreplaceable players, opposing defenses take advantage, begin to scheme you. You disagree?

I don't disagree that you take advantage of you opponents injuries.

I just disagree with the notion that we didn’t have any playmakers to go to even after our injuries. I think there is something to learn from the 2008 injuries, but we may have different conclusions. I think we failed at the mental part of the game after beating Texas. Individually, we didn’t “do our job” and lost individual battles all day to an OU team that was more excited to play that that day. (Which by the way was one of the most electric atmospheres I’ve ever witnessed.) I don’t think last years team ever had the right mental game. We had play makers even after injuries. What we didn’t have was the desire/belief/mental game that defines “team”…

by raider realist on Feb 11, 2012 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough...

Who were the playmakers in 2011 that could have stretched the field when Moore went down? Who were the WR proven to be good blockers on the outside for outside screens. Having these individuals, according to the OC, would have allowed him to take advantage of what defenses were doing to scheme us after the loss of Moore and Stephens. This is my point. The injuries alone were not the problem. Our opponents response to the injuries, and our inability to stop them, even when we knew what they were doing, was the problem. This was not a coach issue, this was a youth, talent issue on the outside, which snowballed into a youth/confidence issue at QB.

"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders

by TTUMAR on Feb 12, 2012 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

2 good questions.

I think the big concern for me is your 2nd question. Who were the WRs that could block? It seems like the core issue again comes down to our inability to do the most fundamental things well, specifically block and tackle. My opinion is that if you wear a Tech uniform on game day, your expected to do your job no matter how far down the depth chart you are. My opinion is that if you have a problem blocking on the outside screen, it’s not because you aren’t fast or strong enough. You had the talent to make this team. You simply lack the desire to do the work in practice and develop the technique (assuming we are coaching technique well). My opinion is that you expect your guys to step up and do their job every day in practice, and when your asked to block on outside screens,(or on field goal attempts) you beat your man because you work harder and want it more than he did.

Work ethic, desire, heart, mental toughness, all those things that I thought were part of our identity seemed to be missing. Talent, in some cases, is not greater than desire.

Ignoring the ad hominems

Injuries might account for a drop off in production, but not a complete collapse.

I’m not sure how you can describe this post or my previous one or two posts on this topic over the past two months as rants.

In those previous posts, I went to the data to determine games lost due to injuries. We’ve been told that injuries accounted for our problems in 2011. The data suggests that our players did not miss an inordinate number of games due to those injuries. I also acknowledged that Stephens’ loss was are most significant. I still think he is the team’s best player.

When I cited that data, you dismissed the findings choosing to accept at face value that injuries and lack of talent were the reasons for our post OU collapse without refuting the information I had gathered.

My argument was that some injuries, like Stephens’ injury – were more detrimental to the team than other injuries. Stephens’ injury was significant. Stephens was the offense’s most important player, and he missed a significant part of the season. Edwards was the team’s best offensive lineman, but his injury occurred in the last game of the season. One cannot reasonably argue that Stephens’ injury and Edwards’ injury had the same impact on the team.

Similarly, I argued that some injuries, like the one suffered by Tony Morales, a freshman who has yet to play a single down of FBS football, was less significant than the one suffered by Stephens.

When I looked at the information I was not convinced that the injuries suffered by Texas Tech were significantly worse than those suffered by other teams or by previous teams fielded by Texas Tech.

I am skeptical that our supposed lack of talent or injuries accounted for our complete annihilation at the hands of less talented teams like Iowa State, or our utter inability to compete at home with Oklahoma State or a downtrodden Texas team. I could have accepted a slight drop off in production, but that is not what happened. (I also am sceptical of those who try to lay those blowouts at Glasgow’s feet – scapegoating is generally a red flag for me).

Back to your (Brown’s) theory. If the defense were overplaying the middle as much as you and he claim, we should have been able to beat opposing teams at the edges. By definition, teams would be vulnerable in those areas. As Brown seems to admit, we were unable to do so. Was it due to poor talent or poor coaching? I think a reasonable observer can choose one of those two theories.

Based on the evidence of our 5-12 conference record since the beginning of the Tubs’ era, my observation (not agenda) is that the coaching staff, whatever their previous experience might be, has not yet figured out how to be successful in the Big 12.

Given that our schedule will be more difficult in 2012, given that virtually all of our so-called untalented receivers and starting quarterback are returning this year in addition to what some news services describe as more returning starters than any other team in the Big 12, using your arguments, I am not sure on what basis you or Brown can expect the team to be better next year.

A fourth defensive staff in four years, the injection of some JUCO players, improved health, a home-dominated schedule, and returning experience are the four causes for optimism.

Talent, unfortunately for some, will not be significantly different than the 2011 team.

WE do have two McRoys with rabbit like speed, don't forget

Plus more speed arriving. If there is any improvement at Tech, it will start with speed.

Im devastated

to hear Eric Stephens will have to take a medical redshirt. I hope he comes back stronger than ever.

That said

I hope our other walking wounded RBs and young RBs can get it together. I watched marquez closely last season. It always seem he was ABOUT to break a big run but was never able to turn the corner and get it going. He’s gonna have to improve to make use of all that speed he’s got.

This being able to put it together is something kenny WIlliams was able to to more and more as the season progressed

they never said he had to take a medical redshirt.
He said “could redshirt next year, if necessary” So he could be back if he is healed and the season is still 8 months away.

Right, the staff is doing what they can with spring by playing the players who are available and using the time to prepare in the event we need them.

The injured have not been reported as being behind schedule, we all know they may be ready…and then we all know they may not be ready in a worse case.

It all makes sense without any decision being made yet.

Schedule is NOT coming out today as per the Big 12

and rest of the world.

Not sure where schedule above came from. Could be leaked version or incorrect version.

The waiting continues…sigh…

the schedule is the one listed on the official Texas Tech iPhone app. Was just released on there today, so I guess you could consider it leaked.

As it is on the app run by the athletic department, i’d consider it credible.

It’s interesting because all the Lubbock media reported the same schedule you did (much later) only to to back off and say it may change. Hmm…

This is accurate >>> RT @kbohls I’m told by a Texas Tech source that he thinks Texas will play at Texas Tech on Dec. 1. #ut

That might just be when the CCG’s are played. I wouldn’t mind playing UT when those other games are being played around the country. I could be wrong.

CCG?

Sorry, I don’t know that one!! What does it mean?

I’m okay either way – of course that means I’ll be making the drive to Lubbock. But playing UT at home is always fun. Obviously brings back memories of “the catch” & also the look on McCoy’s face. Beautiful!

Conference Championship Games. It would be a great way to end the season with a good beating on UT! We can still dream.

Thank you!

Yes, I believe in dreaming…especially when I’m not a fan of the reality!
