Oklahoma 47, Texas Tech 65 | Post Game Thoughts

Box Score | Post Game Quotes

GAME RECAP
MVP
Robert Lewandowski and Javarez Willis | Willis was clutch because he played great defense and he scored, while Lew was tremendous in the second half. Couldn't miss. Willis and Lew played their hearts out.

Numbers
7 | OMG, only 7 turnovers for the game for Texas Tech.
28 to 6 | TTU had 28 points in the paint to OU's 6.
12 to 4 | I cannot recall when TTU had more points off of turnovers than the opposing team. Yep.

THE RESULT

THIS POST IS DIFFERENT | Finally, this post game thoughts are different. I don't get to writ about how this team turned the ball over more than the opposing team and I don't get to write about how this team couldn't create any offense and I don't get to write about how the opposing team was better. I can't remember exactly when I came to the realization that this team wasn't very good, but that's a hard thing to compartmentalize for me, to openly admit that a team that I root for isn't very good, but I don't like being dishonest about a team either.

But last night, life was good and I'm going to celebrate a win. I won't be posting any news from any other sports this morning, despite having some news about football and a ton of baseball news. We'll get to it tomorrow. It sounds ridiculous to think that a win is so important and if it's important to my Texas Tech frame of mind, I can only imagine how important it is to this group.

I would also encourage you to watch the post-game press conference. Head coach Billy Gillispie gets emotional about his team and the fans and Lew and Bean may be the most appreciative people on the planet right now.

BACKCOURT

Jararez Willis | When Willis shoots the ball well and doesn't turn the ball over, he's not a liability. Just 1 assist and 1 turnover for the game, but Willis' box-and-1 defense against Pledger was critical, just as much was Willis' 8 of 12 from the field.

Ty Nurse | Nurse is an over-dribbler and I think that's his biggest problem. He dominates the ball sometimes and that creates a lull in the offense and makes it difficult to create something. Nurse didn't shoot particularly well, 2 of 10, but he did have 7 assists and 0 turnovers being such a primary ball-handler, that's what you need. Had a real pretty alley-oop to Tolbert.

Luke Adams | Wasn't asked to do too much, but he played 35 minutes. He wasn't really a positive or a negative offensively and he played good defense. Amazingly, the only three guards that played were Adams, Nurse and Willis. No other guard came off the bench.

FRONTCOURT
The other thing is whenever you have 9,386 people here tonight after we have had the results that we have, it shows you that they really do appreciate… I’m an emotional guy because I really do appreciate commitment. And I really do appreciate loyalty, and I think that’s what makes you the best.
- Billy Gillispie
On the fans.

Jordan Tolbert | Missed just about all of his short jump-shots, but continues to display the athleticism that you know will eventually translate when he has a summer to improve his game. Finished with 9 points, 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Busy night.

Robert Lewandowski | Lew was 1 of 7 from the field in the first half and 7 of 12 from the field in the second half. Seemed like he just couldn't miss later in the second half. Finished with 16 points and 6 boards.

Jaye Crockett | Much like Adams, Crockett was relatively quiet offensively, finishing with just 4 points, but he did have 6 boards, 2 turnovers, 3 blocks and 1 steal. He was the only player that played significant minutes off the bench.

Clark Lammert | Minimal minutes.

This

is such a big deal. I have only been able to watch a few games this year. At times they looked pretty good and hung tough and played well against teams that they really should not have. Other times you wish they would run the clock through the game just to get it over with sooner. I am happy for these young men and happy for coach. Winning, especially for a team like this, does so much for them psychologically. Guns up Raiders and coach.

This win is huge for a young team ...

BCG will be able to build off it. The team now knows the effort, teamwork, and skill needed to create a solid win. When the team loses its way BCG will be able to remind them about the effort needed to win in the Big 12 and they will comprehend what he is saying and believe that they can get it done.

The monkey is off their back and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Defense was the key

to winning this game. We only shot about 43%, but held them to 33%. The entire team was solid. Willis was great on Pledger, their leading scorer.

For once the offense did not try to force what wasn’t there. If the big guys couldn’t get the ball under the basket they took some short jumpers. OU couldn’t just collapse inside. They had to come out away from the basket to guard.

Willis and Nurse were able to penetrate at times when it was there. Only seven turnovers, because they didn’t try to force it. Tech controlled the tempo of the game.

GREAT GAME ALL AROUND TEAM!

Check out the stats...

I’ve been harping on keeping a consistent lineup throughout the game… we did this (Crockett & Lammert off the bench, Lammert only 4 minutes) the team got comfortable with the same players on the court and the chemistry started to click with them. Only 7 turnovers… a great game for any team! Only 16 personal fouls… and we played tough (didn’t have hardly any “stupid” fouls). A winning formula that usually always equals a win for any college basketball team. I’m so proud of this team, awesome win, good coaching, and nice game for all the players on the court. Keep the momentum going, and WRECK ’EM TECH!

In his post-game comments

BCG noted that some of the guys wanted out of the game, but he pretended not to see them because they were playing well together. I’m not sure what to expect for the rest of the season, but it appears BCG will go with a tighter and more organized rotation if it’s working.

Is OU our new itch

Congrats to Billy G and the team. Great pic on the front page Seth. That is how you smile and enjoy the moment. I will be nobody in the locker room was telling this kids they suck and were lucky to win.

Important win for The Texas Tech Red Raiders

After a while a team can get very accustomed to losing and cannot remember what is required to earn a win, even at home. I was afraid this team was nearing that line, but the way they battled (like they have all year really) and took care of the ball (which seldom happened this year) has to be an encouraging feeling for them and for Coach Gillispie. All the teaching, coaching and practice came to fruition in this game. I hope they squeeze this feeling and hold on to it tightly moving forward. I would not expect any miricles, but I would anticipate better opportunities to pull out a win against some teams the rest of the season. If they do this, next year could represent a dramatic improvement in results. But, hold on to this win and use it as a motivational tool against A&M and the rest of the teams this year. Congratulations red Raiders. GO TECH!

Great win.

Gillispie will build a consistent winner at Tech. (But I don’t think there were 9386 fans there…maybe 9386 tickets sold, but actual attendance appeared to be a lot less.)

Glad that BCG showed his appreciation for the fans

but he could have omitted the “attendance” figure – it clearly wasn’t close to that. Tickets sold is easier to quantify, but it would be interesting to know the actual attendance. The women’s attendance looked even lower.

I’m disappointed that the teams don’t draw better, but winning is a surefire cure.

Good to be able to see this game and this win on the internet.

I can see now that Nurse over-dribbles. Lammert played well while he was in. I agree that if the five you have out there work, keep them in until a wheel falls off. Subbing has its time and place, but developing a rhythm and sense of timing is impt. too. I trust the coach to make those decisions.

good point guard

Play goes a long way…..the turnovers have been killer this year, and we haven’t been able to get the ball to our bigs in a great area to score.
Hats off to Bean.

This is a 3 ring circus up in here......

It makes a difference when key players get through their injuries and play well.

This is a game we have all be waiting for, it is good to see a win in a reasonably well played game.

Very interested to see how the team looks vs. A&M tomorrow

After all, they’re in unknown territory (coming off a B12 win). They are playing a beatable opponent. Will they just show up and assume another win will happen now that they have it "all figured out? Will they revert back to some of their past mistakes (too many TOs and fouls, too few rebounds)? Or will they show growth and maturity and be a better, smarter, tougher team tomorrow and the rest of the season?
