RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | Sigh. Another loss and only scoring 38 points for the game is troubling, but I suppose that it's not any more troubling than any other loss at this point in what has been a long season. Texas Tech lost to Texas A&M, 38-47 (box score | quotes). Head coach Billy Gillispie really only played 5 players, Robert Lewandowski, Jaye Crockett, Ty Nurse, Javarez Willis and Luke Adams, while Jordan Tolbert only played 8 minutes. If you wanted an indication as to who is going to be back next year, then look no further than that list of players. TAMU killed Texas Tech on the boards, 23-41, and Texas Tech shot only two free throws for the entire game, both misses by Adams. BCG takes the blame for this loss:
"Tough disappointing loss. We had some moments where we played really well, we didn’t play good enough for 40 minutes. They definitely started hitting some shots and playing better. When it got right down to it we weren’t tough enough in the lane to beat them."
LAJ's Nick Kosmider and DT's Chois Woodman have their game stories (Kosmider also has a notebook).
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | Don't forget that the Lady Raiders tip off at 7:00 pm and you can watch the game exclusively on the Longhorn Network. LAJ's David Just and DT's Chois Woodman preview the game the Lady Raiders could really use this game, but they haven't won in Austin since 2006 (from Just's article):
Austin has been anything but hospitable for the Lady Raiders in recent history, and Tech coach Kristy Curry owns an 0-5 record at the Frank Erwin Center. Tech hasn’t won at the Drum since 2006 — Marsha Sharp’s final season.
So what gives with the Austin slump?
"You know, that’s a great question," senior forward Jordan Barncastle said. "I have no idea. It’s not that there’s a brutal crowd. I don’t know. At some point it just gets a little mental. But we’re definitely ready to make a change and not repeat the last couple of years."
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | DT's
"At that time, I didn’t know exactly what was going on — sometimes I still don’t," he said. "It wasn’t even dealing with baseball. It was just a time in my life when I couldn’t control what I was doing. I had a lot of questions that had no answers. As much as I hated to say it, I really needed to step away from the game and just look at my life. That was the most important thing — baseball was a second issue."
And teammate CF Barrett Barnes:
"It’s awesome," Barnes said. "It’s a blessing. He overcame some very difficult situations and things like that, and overall as a team we’re just glad to have him back. He’s a big part of our lineup, he’s one of our family members, he’s a brother of mine and we’re just really happy he’s back with us this year."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | LAJ's Don Williams talked with the two newest commits, DB Tavares Gardner and WR Devin Lauderdale, who also happen to be cousins. I'll have profiles on them a bit later.
Head coach Tommy Tuberville was on Galloway & Co., 103.3 ESPN in Dallas, and talked a bit about the schedule. The LAJ also had this article, and it was the only quote I could find from Tuberville on the release of yesterday's schedule:
"We are going to have the opportunity to host probably three top 10 teams at Jones AT&T Stadium, and I don’t think any other school in the country can say that," Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. "With Texas, Oklahoma and West Virginia all coming to Jones AT&T Stadium, we couldn’t ask for a better home schedule. The Big 12 Conference is as challenging and difficult as it gets. Our coaches and players are excited for the challenges that this schedule presents, and we are ready to get back on the field for spring practice to begin our preparations."

I wonder who BCG will drop
Chris Level has already said that we might have seen Wagner play his last game as a Red Raider but who else is out.. Maybe Petteway? Nash or Minnis? I hope he can find a spot for Nash becuz he’s got size and ball skills.. Hopefully they can keep Gotcher as well becuz i believe he was playing good beore he went down.. BCG was on Tech Talk yesterday talking about Dejan Kravic and Kader Tapsoba.. He was saying good things about these guys. They dominate the lanes in practice… Jaye and Lew cant even get into the lane without getting blocked by one of these guys. He said they can compete in the Big XII right now.. He said he has been wanting to play them but he’s gonna save them for a redshirt… In his words “you only redshirt a player if you think he is going to be great.”
Someone check my math
There are currently 6 players committed for next year, but only 2 scholarships available – Forte (left team) and Lew (senior). So, 4 roster spots need to be cleared.
My opinion —
Safe: Crockett, Tolbert, Gotcher, Willis plus Kravic, Tapsoba (based on BCG comments)
On the Block: Nash, Minnis, Wagner, Nurse, Petteway
I might pick Nurse as most likely of the five to stick since he only has one more year in the program anyway. But, Wagner or Petteway may have more upside. Assume Adams and Lammert continue as walk-ons, but no scholarship.
On the Block
I probably had it the same way.. I just think Nash can really turn into a good player becuz he has size and he can handle the ball.. Level said he wasnt sure if Wagner was all in on the BCG train.. I just kind of feel bad for the guys that basically get cut after recieving a scholarship, I jus hope they can land some where else, at least at SPC
For whatever reason, Nash hasn't been given a real opportunity
Agree about the cuts. Will be interesting to see how long BCG continues this practice. It could be a negative for recruiting if guys aren’t sure they’ll be around for 4 years.

Hey Seth,
Totally unrelated to today’s diatribe but I know we like “reds” pictures of Tech. I couldn’t resist posting this via Texas Tech’s facebook page. Didn’t think it deserved a fan shot so posted here in the comments. Hope that is ok. Some pictures of West Texas to music. The photographer is a tech alumnus.

Disappointing
Great photos, but how can there be a photographic panorama of West Texas with no picture of the Tech campus on it?
I believe you missed the point of the exercise.

All those minutes by the starters might have been half the problem for the offense completely stalling out for the last 10 minutes of the game
not to say the subs might have been any better, but surely they were getting tired and losing focus
Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures.
"We couldn't ask for a better home schedule"
Really! How about a schedule that has a couple of breaks? How about a schedule that does not have 9 conference games in a row without a break?
Really Tubs?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
I don't think he wants to make excuses.
Isn’t this what we were all mad about earlier last year?
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
Obviously,
Tubs is directly involved in setting the Big 12 schedule and thought it best to not have a bye week during conference play. From his comments you can tell he sees this as the perfect schedule, and I, for one, am angered by that.

Or it could be coach speak.
So, I am not sold that it was obviously exactly what Tubs wanted.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
I agree with you
I just forgot to use my sarcasm font. No matter what anyone from Tech says about the schedule, it’s not changing, so they might as well not complain publicly.

Correct
Tubs has virtually no input. Hocutt was given 4 schedules by the Big 12, and asked to rank them 1 to 4, 4 being the least desirable. The ranked this schedule 4, but some how that is the one the league went with. As for the home schedule Tub’s observation is spot On. It is the best lineup in years.

It is the best lineup in years ...
and that’s a lot of pressure to become competitive. I wouldn’t want this schedule after going 1-6 at home in the Big 12 the past two years. This team is injury-prone (17 players will not participate in spring drills) and young, with a lot of new parts (defensive coaches and JUCO transfers).
I hope that Tubs can get them to play right away.

TCU had a student drug bust roundup today
4 football players at TCU will be expelled for drug distribution along with other students.
The four players arrested are linebacker Tanner Brock; defensive lineman D.J. Yendry; offensive tackle Tyler Horn; and cornerback Devin Johnson, according to documents released Wednesday morning.
Brock, who missed the 2011 season with an injury, was the team’s leading tackler in the 13-0 2010 season that ended with a Rose Bowl victory.

And they will all be released as innocent when
Gary Patterson and Chad Glasgow together throw hissy fits at their administration.
Having Read Gary Patterson's Statement
About the arrests, I don’t think you are correct. Those players are gone.
According to SI, only OU and TCU out of the top 25 schools last year run criminal background checks on all recruits. That, plus the chancellor’s statement that the students are all gone when convicted, and Patterson’s statement that there are times when he doesn’t want to be a head football coach doesn’t make me believe this is going to be swept under the rug.
Keep in mind that this was at TCU, not Baylor Baptist University. Those perpetrators are or will be gone.

Yep.
I read on twitter some bad stuff….only 20 people on the roster would pass a drug test….

"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
There are 82 (82!) players who failed a “random” drug test of the whole team. This is going to be huge and could smack TCU with penalties we have never seen before. I sure hope it is not real, but all indications are that the meat of the football team could be out at least for the coming season. Terrible news.

Embarrassing
I know these players and they knew better. It was stupid to deal drugs and TCU acted swiftly and just.

Very disappointed
in last night’s MBB game. Perhaps the first B12 game that I was actually expecting a win going in.
I understand the idea of keeping a consistent lineup on the floor, but this team has suddenly gone from playing 10-11 players to 5-6. Somewhere in between is probably about right.
Sticking with what’s working is fine (e.g. – OU game). But in the 2nd half last night, Tech was outscored 30-12, outrebounded 24-11 and outshot 39%-26%. They also had more TOs (8-3) and fewer FTs attempted (2-11). Clearly, it was not working. I don’t know if the issue was conditioning or execution or both, but some substitutions might have helped and couldn’t have hurt. Tolbert didn’t do much in his 8 minutes, but given more opportunity he might have gotten into the flow and contributed.
In the second half, BCG’s slowdown strategy may have been an attempt to shorten the game and/or rest the players, but I think it just made them lethargic. They settled for outside jump shots. Most of these were good open looks and some should have been made. But when this wasn’t working, little effort was made to score inside and/or get to the FT line.
BCG really had me scratching my head on this one.
Lady Raiders need to beat the Longhorns tonight in Austin
Two stories on the Big 12 Conference web-site. I don’t think either of the stories adds anything new that has not already been discussed but they are good reads.
"Looking Up In Lubbock" ….. February 14, 2012, Doug Bell, Big 12 Network …. About BCG
"A Sound Inspiration" ….. February 10, 2012, Dave Armstrong, Big 12 Network …. About Luke Adams
I was disappointed in the Men’s BB game last night. I thought after their performance against Oklahoma that they would be able to pull out the win over the Aggies but they just played a horrible 2nd half.
I am not sure how Tech let their 2nd bye-week get removed from the football schedule. I am hoping our home games are 180 degrees different than they were last season. Tech needs to beat everyone who comes to the Jones.
