Red Raider Gridiron | Texas Tech Spring Roster Released and Price Leaves for TAMU
ROSTER MOVES | First things first, the official site had a press release yesterday which included the updated roster (PDF) and a spring prospectus (PDF). LAJ's Don Williams was the first to note that a handful of players have left the program:
DE Aundrey Barr, DE Cooper Washington, OLB Dion Chidozie, S Giorgio Durham, S Desmond Martin and S Russell Polk
Williams notes that Barr is having to end his career due to knee injuries, as is Martin, who never saw the field and apparently had injury issues since 2010. Williams also notes that Washington just stopped working out with the team about two-thirds of the way through the season. That's weird. I know that Durham, Chidozie and Polk were not likely going to play considering how the roster was shaking out, so I'm not surprised that they left. This is also the reason why when I do position previews and reviews, it's good to wait until after the spring because there are almost invariable situations where players leave due to lack of playing time. I'm not discouraged with the players leaving because most likely they were not going to break the rotation, so I don't consider them leaving to be a reason for success or failure in 2012.
GEEZ, INSERT CLEVER SUBJECT LINE ABOUT A COACH LEAVING HERE | Per the TAMU Scout site and Coaching Search, it appears that defensive line coach has accepted the same position with Texas A&M. If you are at all curious about a possible replacement, Coaching Search has this:
Texas Tech: With the departure of Terry Price to Texas A&M, don't be surprised if Tuberville turns to former Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix or former Tulane defensive line / special teams coordinator John Hendrick.
I've got nothing. It's cray-cray how this is going down and I somewhat understood offensive line coach Jim Turner leaving Texas Tech to go to the Dolphins, but this seems like poor form on Price, but this, again, makes head coach Tommy Tuberville look not so good. TAMU is Price's alma mater so I guess that's part of the equation, but still, this is a bit discouraging. I wasn't going to mention it, but I wonder if this is something that happens often with other schools and as an example, former Red Raider Mike Smith was set to take the West Virginia defensive coordinator job and I think he ended up going back to the NY Jets (he flip-flopped a couple of times, but eventually went back to NYJ). At this point I don't know if WVU has a defensive coordinator so in my mind, I have to tell myself that this happens at other schools, but I don't know if it makes me feel any better.
More after the jump.
And as to Price's replacement, I'd be ecstatic with Nix, who I think was being considered for the defensive coordinator spot, but I'm guessing this spot needs to be filled by Friday. If you want to learn a bit more about Hendricks or Nix then click either of those links. I'd also say that I'm happy with Tuberville's replacement for Turner, ACU's Chris Thomsen, so I'm hoping that I'm pleasantly surprised with the new hire, I'm just incredibly frustrated (as I would guess Tuberville might be) with the timing.
DEFENSIVE BACK PREVIEW | LAJ's Don Williams has his position preview for defensive back. One other reason why I don't do positional reviews and previews is because I don't have access so I could make guesses, but it's usually better to wait until the spring shakes out so I don't waste a ton of time writing about players that aren't at Texas Tech. You can click on over for a look at the depth chart, but this is one position group where I think we'd be wasting our time trying to predict who is going to play in the secondary. I cannot imagine a situation where the JUCO guys, like S Austin Stewart and CB Thierry Nguema getting immediate looks because they are already on campus, but players like CB Olaoluwa Falemi and CB Bruce Jones to have opportunities in the fall. If guys like CB Jeremy Reynolds and CB Urell Johnson are going to make a move, they better make a move this spring. Williams also notes that Shawn Corker and J.J. Gaines are moving to safety.

Losing Turner is frustrating,
but Thomsen came on board in a similar manner.
Hopefully, we’ll find a good replacement in time for Spring camp which is supposed to start sometime this month.
Not much time!
"This time it's different."
Like how about Friday.
That means we start Spring bal with no DL coach, awsome.
What a cluster.

It happens everywhere...and until the age of the internet,
most people had ZERO clue who the position coaches were or their comings and goings. Don’t put too much into it. We are just privy to much more info than ever before – and it’s Tech so we look at everything a bit more closely and look for smoke when there’s usually not even a fire. Nothing here…the guy made a personal decision to take a job at his alma mater. Happens every week.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
You are likely right about this, but we did have a couple of coaches choose to leave after only 60 or 90 days. It could be indicative of some other issue or not.

One for the NFL one for his Alma Mater.
I wouldn’t read to much into it IMO.

Hmmm, Price is one of Tubervile’s guys. He worked under tuBS at Ole Miss and Auburn. People tend to remember the good things and forget the bad, maybe when he got here he was reminded of some things that he had forgotten.

the best coach
For the dl is still at tech….coach Mac (Sam McElroy). The coaching carousel on defense has been nothing less than chaotic and we will now sing the praises of tubs second choice….because he will have SEC ties and it will be all good.

Get out of Town
Coaches and players can’t wait to get away from Tommy. Losing a coach to Sumlin this late in the game is very telling. Position coaches can’t get along with Tommy. He can bring in all the re treads he wants, but the future at Tech is in a youth movement. This team wil be lucky to win six games next year.
You just don’t see programs rise from the dead bringing in re treads. That is why ATM suffers ever year. They hire coaches with tenure (nice way of saying old) that always deliver below expectations. Why, because they are re treads. Tommy is a re tread. You want to win, you go out and hire the best young men, and let them build a dynasty.
Shit, we are just screwed.

Makes me think that he spewes tons of crap up front (salesman ship) and when he gets into the actual details of football is totally clueless or has so many hair brained ideas you cant do your job
For Example:
you have to take chances on the road to create momentum
a QB has to have good spin on the ball because its windy in West Texas
Speed trumps everything !
you cant teach a kid to catch
on-side kicks are fun
your OC cant call his own plays in the red zone
.....................................................................................
We didn't realize how special those days were, but then again we did celebrate a hell of a lot!

Blaze a trail, spend some time in West Texas, feel the sand sting your skin and burn your eyes, let the winter dry your hands, learn that its there only because our ancestors didn’t want to be around other people … that’s West Texas
i think your on to something here …. like when
i gonna run special teams …4 guys stare at a ball while Baylor runs it in for touchdown .
or when he says … “players need lots of lower body strength” yet how many knee injurys on the list ?

BTech May be right this time
Why can’t Tubby keep coaches on his staff, especially defensive coaches? It begs the question: Does he let them coach? Or is he a person who has to be “in control” all the time?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Tubs clearly doesnt bump heads with his coaches.. Look at what glasgow did to the defense last year… I hope Tubs had nothing to do with that
What if Tubs had a lot to do with it?

Tubs
know’s nothing about a 4-2-5 scheme.. So if he gave glasgow input then Glasgow is an idiot..

Injuries were huge
If Tech couldve kept Tre Porter, Leon Macky, andT Bullit on the field the D would have got better over time.. How is he going to b a “defensive genius” in a scheme he’s never seen before?
Really?
You hope Tubs had nothing to do with that? Isn’t he the head coach? Are you giving this guy, who is supposed to favor the defensive side of the ball, a pass?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Not the right question.
You said “I hope Tubs had nothing to do with that.” As the HC, isn’t he responsible for EVERYTHING that the team does (or does not do)?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
He's responsible for hiring the coaches
But he’s going to let the coaches do what they think they can do to help the team win.. Im sure Tubs takes blame for eveything but in all honesty Glasgow sucked.. How can a DC go through life knowing that his D cant tackle?
How can a head coach who's supposed to be a defensive genius go through life knowing his D can't tackle?

Before taking the HC position at Ole Miss
Tubby’s experience was entirely on the defensive side of the ball.
1994: Defensive Coordinator at Texas A&M .
1986-93: Various capacities on defensive staff at University of Miami from graduate assistant to defensive coordinator (1993).
1980-84: Coached defensive ends and linebackers at Arkansas State University.
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Everybody know's his experience is on the Defensive side
But he hasnt been a DC since 94.. The spread wasnt “big” in 94.. His job title is not defensive coordinator.. How do you expect someone to coach something he know’s nothing about? Does tubs actually call himself a “defensive genius” or is that the media?
I am not the one who labelled Tubs
A defensive genius. But you are still avoiding the original question. You said “I hope Tubs had nothing to do with that”….basically giving him a pass for one of the worst defenses in the country last year. Then you said “He’s only responsible for hiring the coaches”…again, giving him a pass on last year’s performance. The HC is responsible for EVERYTHING that happens. And a good leader will do two things – - – take responsibility when things go wrong, and give credit to others when things go right. Bad leaders take credit when things go right, and blame others when things go wrong.
What kind of leader is Tubby?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Dont say Tubs doesnt take responsibility for what happened last year
Becuz he does, he takes responsibilty for stupid calls and for stupid risk even if they were not his idea.. Tubs took up for Glasgow’s stupid scheme that couldnt even work against TX ST. I clearly said ’hope Tubs had nothing to do with it" at the same time knowing he had plenty to do with it… Tubs take responsibility for eveything that happens with the program.. Tubs is loyal to his coaches..
And I'm convinced that you
really don’t know what you are talking about. Another outrageous statement – "the spread was not “big” in 94." When Tubby was the HC of Ole Miss from 95-98, and then at Auburn after that, there were two pretty good spread offenses in the SEC – Hal Mumme’s offense at Kentucky, and Steve Spurrier’s offense at Florida. Don’t you think this guy was just a “little bit” involved in getting his defense ready for these spread offenses?
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
"Big"
as in everyone in the league didnt run it! The way the spread is ran in the Big XII right now is not the same as it was in the SEC back then..
so?
You think we shouldn’t be as tough on tubs because he didn’t see spread offenses in the sec? Really?
Injuries, weather, bad hires, no talent …and now lack of familiarity?
I don’t know your vocational history, but don’t try these excuses at work. You have to anticipate any and all issues and get very few mulligans.

7 and a bowl game.

Is your 8 win requirement an absolute?
What if it’s only 6 or 7, but there are improvements, such as:
- win conf. game(s) at the Jones
- players and/or staff don’t ever quit
- no 60 pt. (or even 30 pt.) losses
- defense breaks 2 yr. streak of ranking in the 100s
Is that enough?
mmm win conference games at the Jones - so your saying loosing to Northwestern St or New Mexico is acceptable ?
no 60 pt or 30 pt losses .. should be nothing less than 14 point loss
Defense has to finish above 50th ….
"we did a lot of things well, but there are several areas that need improving, our idea of moving forward is to do things that make you improve" - Jason Garrett
There is
a little wiggle room for me…but very little due to last year. You know what the bottom line is though…..I think if the base is excited and the stadium is full he stays, despite any bottom line predictions about wins and losses. From my first game in person during his tenure (the UT game in ’10 when we were both undefeated and had big implications) the games have had the intensity of a polka festival.

Fair enough
My point was that it’s difficult to evaluate the team purely on wins and losses (though it’s obviously a great place to start.) For example, I don’t think last year’s 5-7 adequately portrays how horrific the season really was.

Price not offical, yet.
I just heard Tubs on the radio this morning saying they will know for sure sometime today. Tubs said he has convinced him twice not to go to A&M. He also said he never blocks other teams from contacting his coaching staff. He wants his coaches to do what is best for their families. Tubs also said he has a guy for the job already lined up if Price left

If I am Price, here's part of my thinking ...
1) I know I can work with Tubs and the other D coaches, but this gig may be short term and that decision is largely outside my control.
2) My alma mater is calling, it’s most likely a longer term gig, and it’s in the SEC.

I don’t think the last two coaches to leave have had much to do with Tuberville, if at all. One of them left for the NFL to work with a coach he knows, and the other is likely going to his alma mater with probably better pay and a lot more stability.

I would not want one of my coaches to stay if I had to ask him twice not to leave. Sayonara.
Who is next in line? McElroy? Fine with me. If Hendricks wants to be here, bring him on. Nix, why not? Get someone qualified and experienced who can do the job and who wants to come here and stay here longer than two months.
I am sick of this coaching carousel, and I bet the players are too. Get someone who will recruit and put some players in the NFL and pay them enough to keep them. Cut the rest loose, including the HC if he does not bring a winner.
Sorry, having one of those days. I feel that Price threw us under the bus. C’ya. I was offered a chance to return to my alma mater (at a raise) but I had a commitment to the students and town and university and I stayed. I think Price should have too but …

By the way,
I think someone should reach out to Cooper W. Maybe he had freshmen insecurity problems. Think back to when you were 18, and it was scary as h… University counseling service? Athletic dept. have mentors and specialists? This young man may need personal help. And maybe with that, he could get his life and his football life back together.
Or
Maybe his life is already together and he didn’t want to play college football after all? I can’t assume his life is bad just because he left the football team.

Not saying he was in total trouble just cause he quit football.
But if that was a warning sign then I would want someone to reach out and at least check with him. If he just lost interest, okay. But if he needs help, help him.

If Price wants to leave for A&M let him go. The guy took the job at Tech and should have hung around for at least a season IMO. Leaving this close to spring practice is horrible and I sincerely hope he fails miserably at A&M.
