Red Raider Gridiron | Tate to be Named Defensive Line Coach
DEFENSIVE LINE REPLACEMENT | I'll get to the news first, it appears that Marshall Thundering Herd defensive line coach Fred Tate will be the next defensive line coach at Texas Tech and will replace Terry Price.
Here's the somewhat funny back-story. I was poking around on the internets last night and I cruised on over to RRS.com and noticed that they had posted a story about a coach being named, and I have to assume that they had the information about Tate. I also checked Coaching Search to see if they had a name or any sort of update about Texas Tech, and they did not. There was no Texas Tech update. Then, this morning, I check Coaching Search, again, and the guy that runs the site has this:
I posted last night that Tommy Tuberville very well may turn to Marshall defensive line coach Fred Tate to fill the defensive line job at Texas Tech. I was notified that my information appeared on another website rather quickly thereafter. Keep your eyes open. Apparently, it's happening often.
I know for a fact that Coaching Search did not have the information first because I was on the internets checking both sites at the same time, literally within seconds of each other, assuming that RRS.com was posting about Tate and I'm almost 100% positive it was. Coaching Search is making it sound like RRS.com took his news, but I actually think it's the other way around and that's somewhat sad not to give credit where credit is due. Sometimes other sites beat you to a story and it's just fine to link to the site that does break the news. I'm not going to link to Coaching Search, you can go find it, but this ain't cool.
But even the RRS.com folks have a hard time linking to outside material as Mike Graham had Thursday links for the DMN, none of which included anything from DTN. This is expected and I don't really care, after four or five years of writing, the only folks that link to DTN are mostly other bloggers, I think the general thought is that you don't ever recognize your competition, but I'll link to just about anything and everything, so long as it's free.
Back to Tate, here is his Marshall bio and you'll note that it says he is coaching safeties, but apparently his Marshall bio wasn't updated as he moved to the defensive line. Tate played defensive line at Southern Miss and then took a 5 year hiatus to join the Army as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army Airborne. That's kinda cool. Then, as you can see his Rivals page, he went back to Southern Miss after getting out of the army, then to Chattanooga and then to Marshall. The only reason I think, or possibly know, that Tate is the defensive line coach is this article from April of 2011 from the Huntington Herald-Dispatch:
"He was like a fish out of water coaching the secondary because he's never done that," Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said. "His comfort zone has been the linebackers, the front seven and the defensive line. It didn't take long to watch him work with that defensive front to know that there is where he likes to be and he's at home there."
Tate's energy was realized early on Saturday as players lined up for the ever-popular Circle Drill, in which Marshall players form a ring and coaches call out individual players -- one from the offensive side, one from the defensive side -- to engage in a physical, mano y mano battle.
As excited as Tate was during the drill, it appeared that he wanted to get in the middle and line up himself.
Holliday noted that he wouldn't mind seeing that, either.
"He looks like a D-lineman. Hell, he looks better than the players," Holliday said. "That's where he played at Southern Miss, so I know he's enjoying it."
More on Tate and so many additional football links that you'll go cray-cray.
And Tate is apparently a dynamite recruiter as he was named the recruiter of Conference USA in 2010 by ESPN:
The Thundering Herd signed one of the best classes in Conference USA and all with a new head coach in Doc Holliday working his first recruiting cycle at the school. Tate came from Chattanooga and earned a sterling reputation as a recruiter and rising star in the coaching profession at Southern Mississippi, his alma mater, under Jeff Bower.
I've been trying to find something more recent, but have come up empty.
LINEBACKER PREVIEW | LAJ's Don Williams has his last position look before spring practice that starts today at 4:00 pm (I think) and here's a bit:
With the move from a 4-2-5 defense back to a 4-3, starting strong safety Terrance Bullitt will convert to strong-side linebacker, and one of the newcomers the Red Raiders are most optimistic about is rangy linebacker Will Smith, who transferred at mid-term from Riverside (Calif.) Community College.
They also have more options with Pete Robertson and Justin Cooper from the 2011 freshman class and Chris Payne, another JC transfer who came in at mid-term.
"Our linebacker corps could be the strongest part of the team this year, if you look at it on paper," defensive ends coach Robert Prunty said.
Much like the secondary, I'm thinking that there's a lot that's going to shake out between now and August and there's going to be a lot of movement at this position group.
TEXAS TECH SPRING PREVIEWS BIG 12 LINKS | Turfburner's Jay Beck has what Vegas has released as the win totals for the next year and Vegas has Texas Tech at 7 wins. I'll encourage you to go over and give a click for Beck's thoughts . . . high school classmate and writer for FSSW, Matt Mosley, previews the Big 12 and has this to say about Texas Tech:
Texas Tech: We talked to Red Raiders coach Tommy Tuberville on 103.3 KESN Tuesday, and he seemed pleased with the schedule. The Red Raiders have Oklahoma, West Virginia and Texas at home, and they have a decent chance to be 4-0 before the Sooners come to town. Call me crazy, but it looks like the Red Raiders will qualify for a bowl game this season.
. . . Dave Campbell's Texas Football's Travis Stewart previews Texas Tech prior to spring practices and it's a good-good, although not entirely accurate, it's a good read for a Friday . . . here is a Rivals preview of the Big 12 . . . CBS Sports has a spring primer . . . Rivals has a spring preview with some thoughts by RRS.com's Aaron Dickens . . .

I can see us getting to 6
Highly Probable Win
@Texas State
NW State
New Mexico
Kansas
Probable Win
@ Iowa State
Baylor
Toss Up
@Kansas State
Probable Loss
Oklahoma
West Virginia
@TCU
Texas
@Oklahoma State
but I can see the argument for 7 or 8 (TCU plus upset over one of the probable loss teams).
It’s hard to guess without having an idea what our defense will look like this year.

c'mon..
We now have a d line coach that is big and in shape. He also has coached in the deep south….definitely worth a few victories?

I don't see us losing to TCU or WVU
TCU was a good program in a bad conference, in the Big XII they will be just about average. No they don’t beat us in their first year of the big XII.
And we should have beat KSU last year.
So, I don’t see us losing to them either.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
So did 10 other teams as well.
I believe in the scorebard.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
If you only look at stats and scoreboards
You will be miss lead a lot. We should have one. The big MO shifted in that game, but we still should have won. KSU will not do that again this coming year.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
By that thinking...
We should have lost to Nevada…
Former tech coach bill parcells always said that you are what your record says you are. This is a 5 win team….two of those coming in conference.

Yes we should have lost to Nevada.
But we also should have lost to UT in 2008. But that didn’t happen because of Crabs. Stats matter to a degree but so does the flow of the game.

Agreed on Nevada
disagree on UT ’08. We dominated the first half, and UT only led for less than 2 minutes.

You got to
At least make TCU and Oklahoma St. a toss up..

I asked Don Williams who it would be on twitter last night. He told me Fred Tate. 10 min later coaching search posted it. I think its safe they all have the same source.

I have no doubt that they all got the information at the same time, but from what I could tell, RRS.com had the information first, it just seemed bad form by Coaching Search to claim that his information then appeared on RRS.com.

I was never a starter in HS football, and did not break the two deep chart very much;
but I was always first in line behind the head coach so when he turned around to put someone in, I was there. I have noticed under Re Tread that players and coaches alike stay very far away. The picture on the CBS spring primer reminded me of that.
Just saying.

This guy sounds like a real military type coach who won’t put up with the slackers. Despite losing Price, we may have received an upgrade. Welcome Coach Tate!

Except
Glasgow had zero experience as a DC. Tate has been there and has been successful, moving to a stronger program throughout. As I see it, Tech, and ultimately Tubs, has put together a pretty darned good staff….on paper. If they can actually produce as good as anticipated, Tech’s days of dragging on the bottom on defense is over. I would imagine that by the time the Spring game is played, we will have a very solid idea of where exactly the defense will be. It will also enlighten us as to where the Offense is sitting. Anxious weeks are ahead of us. My personal hope is that Ronnie Daniels comes back stronger, faster and smarter than what we saw a year ago. If so, looook ooouuuuttt!

Sorry… I’ve already been down this “change and hope” path a few times…
It’s hard for me to tell how a 1 yr DL coach for the 78th best defense in the country playing in the C-USA translates into BIg 12 play…
I’m hoping you’re right… but my past experience tells me we won’t really have any idea what’s going to happen until we start up conference play…

Recruiter
All the rumors i saw on twitter yesterday about who was going to be the next coach showed coaches that were all top recruiters. I guess that is one thing Tuberville looks for. Its also good that he is hiring coaches that have worked together at some point. Tate worked with Kaufman the past.

Recruiting is a very important part of college football
but then, so is coaching ability.
for Heaven's sake, just grow a pair
It'd be nice to find both qualities in a coach
recruit the best you can, and then still coach them up and then coach them up some more.
i like lose women
Techcruz just hit a HR....
the key here is that he has worked with Kaufman….I think that’s a very good sign….It is obvious there were all kinds of “issues” on the D side the last 2 years and I do think having inexperienced coaches calling the D did have an impact…..that is why I think at least the InGame calls will be better….now if the South Plains Drifter will just keep his hands off the O and special teams TTU will be fine!!!!! I do think TTU will win at least 6 or more games next year….TSPD has to and he knows it(thanks to Kirby)!!!!!! Can’t wait for Spring Practice….Wreck’Em Tech

I'd Settle
For a “mediocre” defense. If we can get back to a defense that is ranked between 50-70 in total defense and scoring defense, I would be very pleased. But with all the changes in the coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball, how realistic is that?
I hate to say it, but our teams of the past (when we did not play football) had these kinds of defenses. We should have counted our blessings.

We have to have..
a better defense that what we had during the “years we did not play football”. Those defenses won us how many conference titles? It will be nice to win more.

Helped us be bowl eligible and be nationally noted…sounds pretty good after getting trucked against isu and only winning 5 games.

Just wondering how long it takes him to get in the fold. Will he be here by next week? I’m sure Kaufman is pulling double duty until he gets here, but would like to get him working w/our DL ASAP.

As an aside, Don Dunn is also on the staff, though not the coaching staff, as Director of High School Relations, and was one of Tuberville’s former defensive line coach ( http://www.texastech.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/dunn_don00.html ). I don’t know if he’s permitted to coach the team, but there is someone on staff, along with McElroy, who have been DL coaches.

Not much depth at the DT on this roster……and barely more than 2 deep at the DE position as well..
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Don from the AJ tweeted
That they are going to try out Hubert at DE also. That should be interesting….
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
Interesting
But does not help the depth issue at DT. And given our weakness last year in stopping the run, I’m not getting a good feeling here.
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt."
Yeah I thought it was kinda weird too.
He isn’t big enough for DE unless he added like 20 lbs

I can't wait for for the Red and Black Game in 35 days
I will be there. How many of you will, too? It would be great to have a DTN section for the game.
BTW, it is raining in Lubbock today. After the light snow on Monday, and rain yesterday and today, the South Plains area isn’t so dry that dust is flying. What a relief! Wonder if Tommy will practice outside today?
Another reason money needs to be raised for an indoor facility and/or “bubble.” Still can’t believe we don’t have one.

There is one just south of the stadium..........it's been there for a while

by kevinkinsler on Feb 17, 2012 1:36 PM CST up reply actions
Yes, especially this time of year as the track team uses it quite a bit I think. I also don’t think it’s bullshit to think that it’s not enough, especially since a lot of recruits are attracted to dedicated football facilities that a lot of Big 12 programs (Baylor, Iowa St., Texas and I’m sure there are others) have dedicated football facilities.
Go Raiders . . .

You are entitiled
but to say “we don;t have one” is very incorrect. I’d like to see some stats on who uses, how much, how often etc. Of course, if we want to throw another 10 to 20 mil into a building exclusive to football, getter done. just don’t up my freaking ticket prices again. And if we are in a spending spree, why not put some leg room in the Jones, or a close circuit feed to the Fancy Chapel and I can sit there…………..closer to where I park.
for Heaven's sake, just grow a pair
That facility is indeed a multipurpose building and is used by other athletic programs @ Tech. That is the reason Tommy has had to move his team to Wolforth Frenship (Go Tigers! ) to use their indoor facility during inclement weather. Other schools, just like what Seth mentioned (including TCU) have football ONLY structures. It is a shame that we don’t have one and something the coaching staff has been pining for the past 2 years. It needs to get done.
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
I saw first hand it was used by other sports a lot.
For my degree I was around the athletic complex’s a lot. Plus the bubble is not a full field. I believe it was 80 or 60 yard field, can’t remember.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
I understand its multiuse
but what is it about tubs that things are never “good enough”? And so what is so good about the Frenship facility that is better that the Bubble? Had to redo a 6 year old weight room, had to have new weights, had to have turf on the practice field (can’t walk 50 yards?) Wanted to build a “hill”…..wtf?
Why not concentrate on winning football games? Just sayin.
for Heaven's sake, just grow a pair
Wish Re Tread felt the same about five win seasons.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
This didn’t hurt anything though, re-arranging the weight room or putting field turf on the practice field. Leach wanted a sand pit and Tuberville wanted a hill, I guess I considering it window-dressing for the most part. If you’re mad because Tuberville isn’t winning enough, then that’s fine, but I don’t get the anger at him wanting to do things differently. Every coach most likely wants to do things his way.

He was very good, and WELL liked, apparently smart too. This could be the start of a very good thing. He LOVES the game, thinks he’s good at it and has always wanted to coach. He’s comfortable with the game and respects the profession.
