Texas Tech will be featured on the front page of Wikipedia the 20th.
I'm a regular DTN reader/occasional poster and also take part in creating and maintaining Texas Tech related content on Wikipedia (created the articles for Seth Doege, Art Kaufman, Robert Prunty etc.). The main article on the university has long been classified as a "Featured article", that is articles determined by the Wikipedia community to be of the highest quality, and has been selected to be featured on the Main Page. Typically, articles featured as thus get a few hundred thousand hits. I thought yall would be interested.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

lol
afraid not. The various sub-articles go into extensive detail about various notable alumni though.

Didn't want to detract from my comment above
thus the separate posts…I’m curious why Bobby Knight is featured? He did a good job but didn’t achieve any of his records at Tech (that I know of, could be wrong) and isn’t the feather in our cap in the history of Tech.
Also wonder why there is no mention of Mike Leach (without mentioning the scandal) since he is the winningest coach in TTU history? Why not mention/recognize the bowl streak while he was at TTU & that he was the winningest coach in TTU history – maybe even a mention of our football program being known (& copied) for the Air Raid during his tenure. Seems like a glaring omission IMO.
Heck, even Pat Knight is mentioned!
Just some thoughts. Interested in your views hawkspur. Thanks!

I'm curious
as to what you are referring to exactly. Just the introduction of the article? I added brief mention of him in the athletics section
The main article is meant to be a general overview of the university as a whole. other articles go into much deeper detail about mike leach and what he did for the university, as well as the various teams and traditions.
Wikipedia is an excellent source for football information during the season surprisingly, especially finding schedules/what tv station games are on.

Thanks for your response
Yes, I was referring to the main page from your initial link above. It’s nice to see Leach mentioned, thanks.
I agree with you about Wikipedia – I go there often!

I agree with Austin...
This comment, valid as it is, does not fit with the comments about the other sports in the third paragraph.
Bob Knight, the second most winningest coach in men’s NCAA Div. I basketball history, served as the team’s head coach from 2001 to 2008.
There is not reason to mention a coach by name, or his accomplishments—especially for a coach whose accomplishments were not at TTU.
It is more about the balance of the paragraph with regard to the pargraph’s opening comments about the Red Raiders…for heaven sake’s if a coach’s name would be mentioned it would be the coach who actually brought a National Championship to TTU, Marsha Sharp.
Bob Knight brought essenually nothing to TTU compared to those who have coached over the course of the school’s history.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
It’s one sentence in the lead, and the athletics section goes into much further detail about all the tech coaches and teams.
Bob Knight’s win record is ostensibly the most presitigous in recent years, so it’s included.
No disagreement about him being included
Just not a headline separating him from other coaches. Suggestion is that mention of him should be in the athletics paragraph along with other coaches.
Wherever Knight is mentioned it should be relative to his accomplishments at Tech, as TallMike suggested above. As it stands, the mention of Knight doesn’t have relevance/context to his time at Tech.
Also agree if someone is going to be highlighted it should be Marsha Sharp. It would be awesome to put her name next to mention of the Women’s BB National Championship!!!

Well, the comment is not about the athletic section it is that Bob Knight did not do all that much for TTU's athletics.
and in the context of the paragraph there is little reason to mention any coach’s name.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
he achieved
his 880th win in 2007 while at Tech, as well as achieving taking his teams to NCAA tourny more than any other ncaa coach while at Tech, according to wikipedia, that is.

for clarification purposes, i haven’t worked on the main article much. I tend to focus around the sport/football side of things
School colors- in the text it says that they are red and black, but in the summary box it says they are scarlet and black. Not trying to nitpick.

the seventh largest student body in the state of Texas
I know a few of the biggest, but who are the six ahead of us?
2011 Enrollment numbers
51,895 – Texas A&M University
51,145 – University of Texas at Austin
39,824 – University of Houston
35,722 – University of North Texas
34,113 – Texas State University–San Marcos
33,421 – University of Texas at Arlington
32,327 – Texas Tech University

Finally First in something
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Would love to climb up to third.
Doesn’t UH and UNT and UTA have alot of commuter studdents who take night classes? I used to go to San Antonio College and that was true there.
2-6 are all partly commuter schools
Between San Antonio and Austin metro areas there is a population of almost 4 million people. So I suspect Texas State is the default non-community college option for part time college students working in those two metro areas. UNT, UTA and UH are big commuter & continuing education schools for people working in DFW and Houston.

As an aside
If any of you gentlemen would be interested in helping/contributing to various texas tech articles on the encyclopedia by all means. There is a Wikiproject specific to the university, but I’m currently the only member that is very active. The university’s presence on Wikipedia is very important for the public image. Personally, the excellent main article on the university itself played a role in me choosing to attend. I imagine it’s the same for many others

Cool, thanks!
My point with Bobby Knight is that I don’t think he should be “headlined” above other coaches in the opening section. I agree they all get coverage in the athletics section.

I went to the Main Page
It was pretty cool to see Texas Tech right at the top of the page
(Thanks for the heads up)
