Red Raider Gridiron | Texas Tech Football and First Week Impressions

This is a summary of the practices that I haven't seen, but just read about and a lot of this information was burried in various DTN DD's. I thought a summary post would be better than just telling you to read the notebook or reference some other article.

OFFICIAL SITE STUFF | At the Texas Tech video page, they've posted the Red Raider Weekly segment on football practice. It's also on the Texas Tech athletics YouTube page. It's mainly Tuberville talking over some practice footage. I am sure that someone will find something to be upset about with what he said and I can't wait for that as sometimes I feel like the arguments on DTN are sometimes my version of Groundhog Day (indoor facility: "win moar and don't complain about the weather" vs. "the wind is windy need indoor facility").

Anyway, it was good to see some football. I do appreciate Tuberville acknowledging that this team needs to learn to stop the run and I couldn't agree more, this team has to stop the run and although Tuberville talks about running the ball, I think it's about running the ball more effectively as he and OC Neal Brown have run the ball at about a 40% rate for the past two years, which is fine with me.

The official site also has their first article on the spring practices and would just like to take the time to remind you how it takes time for freshmen to learn how things work and TE Jace Amaro affirms that:

"I think last year was a lot different just because I didn't really know many of the plays and how the system worked," Amaro said. "I feel a lot more comfortable and more relaxed now. I was a little uptight last year, and that kind of held me back from what I can really do. Just learning the whole system, that takes weeks and months of practice."

Amaro, who played in all 12 games his freshman season, finished with 57 total reception yards and averaged 4.8 yards a game. But that was not enough for the San Antonio-native. "A lot of people were really expecting a lot from me last year, and I didn't achieve my expectations at all," Amaro recalled. "This year is definitely going to be different."

It's not easy, but sometimes you have to be a bit patient.

MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE | I forgot to mention this on Sunday, but will mention it today, DMN's Mike Graham talked with DT Dennell Wesley, who I don't know if he ever gave a quote last year, had this to say about former defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow:

"No, not at all," Texas Tech defensive tackle Dennell Wesley said when asked if transitioning to yet another defense in new defensive coordinator Art Kaufman's 4-3 scheme was a challenge. "This coordinator makes things simpler than the last defensive coordinator. (Glasgow) just complicated things more than they were supposed to be."

Wesley then put down the 4-2-5 defense -- the scheme TCU will try to compete in the Big 12 with -- in favor of the 4-3 defense.

"(The 4-3 is) a much better defense to stop the run," Wesley said. "You've got more linebackers than cornerbacks on the field."

I'm not sure how to react to this other than the biggest thing that I read about the 4-2-5 last year was that it was supposed to be a simple defense to master because there weren't just that many moving parts. I don't know if this is one of those things where there's an aversion to wanting to learn something new, but most players are much more familiar with the 4-3 and are probably more comfortable playing in that type of defense as I'd guess that most players play the 4-3 in high school.

Still, there's part of me thinks that there's a difference between the idea that a defense is supposed to be easy to teach vs. a person being a good teacher to teach a simple concept. I don't know if Glasgow made things easy, but what I do know is that the defense continually looked absolutely awful almost from the get-go. Here's hoping for the best.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

82 | This was in one of Don Williams' notebooks and just as an FYI, WR Javon Bell will be wearing 82 and as Williams noted, Bell has some of the longest dreadlocks on the team. There will be no confusing the new 82 and the old 82. I have never been so ready to put something behind me than this chapter of Texas Tech football and I was incredibly close to not even mentioning it, but what the hell.

LEARNING TO RUSH | I don't know if this is something that really ever occurred to me, but when Williams talked with DT Delvon Simmons, he said his biggest adjustment was figuring out how to pass rush. I don't know if this is something that I take for granted because the spread offense is so prevalent in Texas high schools, but I think this makes some sense. Simmons also mentioned that one of his other problems was strength and I think from my point of view, that was Simmons' biggest problem. He just never looked strong at the point of attack and Simmons needs to be better, and he also looked like he had some baby fat and I'm hoping that he's somewhat transformed himself.

COULDN'T PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY | I thought that Abilene Reporter-News' Zach Long's article on new offensive line coach was very revealing. There's a ton of good stuff there and would encourage you to read the whole thing. Thomsen is asked about moving to Texas Tech after a losing season and he understands the risk:

"I wanted the opportunity to coach Division I," he said. "I have a great opportunity to do that here. I don't sit around and worry about what's going to happen. You can't. Even if I was still at ACU, you never know. As much success as we had there, that thing could turn. Tech had an inordinate amount of injuries last year, and that could have happened at ACU. You can't sit around and worry about the future. You just do the best you can do and go forward. I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe we can win."

Thomsen is also asked about coaching running backs and the offensive line:

"I'm comfortable with either," Thomsen said. "But you're getting to coach five guys instead of one. It takes a little more coordination. And all those guys have to work together — the backs and offensive line.

"But more of my background is offensive line, without a doubt. That's most of what I've done as an assistant, and I've always stayed close to that, even as a head coach. I enjoyed it. I like it, and I have a passion for it. I like coaching those guys. I'm real excited about that. I think we have a chance to be good on the o-line. We have some good players — some good older players and some good younger players. Meshing that group is going to be fun. I'm looking forward to it."

I can't help but like Thomsen's hire, where as I'm on the fence about new defensive line coach Fred Tate, but I don't know if I have any reason to be excited about one or not as excited about the other. Maybe my thought is that Thomsen was a head coach of team that he turned for doormat to a perennial winner and I think to do something like that at a school like ACU, without a lot of resources, that you have to be an outstanding teacher or hire individuals who can teach what you want to get across. I think that's something that isn't discussed very much, although I think this is a big reason why there was such a swing in the defensive coaches. Otis Mounds was most likely only hired for his ability to recruit, not coach, and that's a huge problem when he didn't pull in any recruits. Tuberville did go back to some people that he was more familiar with and I don't know that I have a significant problem with that, but like a lot of you, the turnover on the defensive side of the ball is discouraging to say the least. I think that consistency is a big part of a teams' success, especially on the coaching staff and I think that Tuberville wanted to insert some consistency

MCROY | LAJ's Williams profiled Javares McRoy and I've gone to great lengths to talk about the receiver options here and here. There's no doubt that Javares is supremely talented, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it take a year for Javares to really take hold. The thing that I wasn't real excited to read was that Javares was still picking up plays:

"I’ve just got to learn the receiver plays first," he said. "I’m trying to learn the receiver plays; then I’ll learn the running back plays. As I go along, they said they’ll put me at running back. I feel like I can do it."

I don't know if Javares had to sit out all of last year with the lung injury and as a result he wasn't able to practice with the team, but if he's still learning the plays and getting comfortable, then you should probably temper your expectations.

NOTEBOOKS | There are two notebooks thus far (here and here)and this is definitely something that you should read because even here, I can't cover everything that's there. These are things that stood out to me: the starting defensive front four are DT's Kerry Hyder and Dennell Wesley with Dartwan Bush and Kindred Evans at defensive ends (keep in mind that Jackson Richards had an eye infection the first 2 practices and Leon Mackey had personal issues at home and missed the first 2 practices), although I think that this is a long ways from being decided, with the additional weight that Evans and Branden Jackson have added are very encouraging . . . Pete Robertson is at outside linebacker and I should mention that Robertson is 6-3/220 so he's a good size to play linebacker . . . don't forget that Urell Johnson, Shawn Corker and J.J. Gaines are all now at safety . . . speaking of safeties, D.J. Johnson and Cody Davis are running with the first team while Tre Porter and Urell Johnson are running together and Austin Stewart and J.J. Gaines are the other group . . . Chris Payne is getting noticed as a guy who likes to hit and can run and it's strange in that his recruiting weight was 215, but weighed in at 188, which is significant, but it still wouldn't surprise me to see him on the field more than not . . . the cornerback pairings were Cornelius Douglas and Eugene Neboh, Jarvis Phillips with Jeremy Reynolds and Derrick Mays with Thierry Nguema . . .

Despite me beating up Tubs for

1) his inability to get the defense right
2) his inept special teams coaching
3) his interference with the offensive play calling
4) his excuse making
5) his weather reporting

I think our football team may be closer than many of us think to breaking through. If the staff can get it together, we have a legitimate shot of a decent season. Thanks for the the run down Seth. It’s awesome that I can pick this up all in one place.

Hitting the nail on the head...
Still, there’s part of me thinks that there’s a difference between the idea that a defense is supposed to be easy to teach vs. a person being a good teacher to teach a simple concept.

My definition of a coach has always been a person who helps you learn to perform at you maximum athletic potential, and then devises schemes that limit the times you must exceed that potential. Glasgow failed at both.

She's got legs, she knows how to use them.

by bmaxw on Feb 21, 2012 11:33 AM CST reply actions

I agree, bmaxw, Seth's comments make sense.

I have heard Glasgow talk in interviews, his words hide his line of thought…I was hoping at the time that he simply did not have good speaking skills in the limelight…now I am thinking maybe he knew much more than he could say, or speak to. I remember the HC talking about overcoaching a time or two last season…hummmm. Simmons’ words make me think we may have had a bright guy, and enthusiastic guy, but one who had problems with his words…as well as with his tongue.

Agree – Glasgow was way too complex for this young defense. It has taken a long time to get the defense established at TCU and it will be interesting to see how well they do in the B12.

New Defense

One thing that should definitely help with this transition to a new defense is that everybody has played in a 4-3 at some point so there should be same familiarity there. We went from a guy (Glasgow) who was probably a poor teacher trying to teach a foreign and complicated system in a hurry to a guy (Kaufman) who seems to communicate better who can almost go strait to the nuances of his system since the 4-3 familiarity is there.

by MississippiTxTechFan on Feb 21, 2012 11:42 AM CST reply actions

Right

While Mr. Wesley maintains that the 4-3 is simply better for stopping the run, familiarity is a big part of the equation. TCU’s 4-2-5 ranked 25th in rush defense last year. Even with the move to the B12, I expect them to be capable next year. I’m sure all of their defensive staff knows the scheme well and they have recruited players specifically for it. Contrast that with what turned out to be a single year experiment for Tech.

by rednblackET on Feb 21, 2012 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Players say stuff like this all the time

“The last guy whom I said I’d take a bullet for was ok, but the new guy whom I really will take a bullet for this time is great!”

Let’s see how the players respond on the field.

"This time it's different."

by LondonRaider on Feb 21, 2012 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

It may be more about how a coaching staff communicates and teaches than how a particular scheme should work...

having said that, the 4-3 is used a lot more than any other scheme in hs football…and college football.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning!

Spring practice brings eternal hope. I’m glad that we are talking about the players and the plays again. Even though the last two years have sucked, there are legitimate reasons that this year could (I said “could”) be a pleasant surprise. (and then I said “surprise” – because it would be) As much as I like to engage in the other stuff, this is where it’s at for me.

I was listening to the ticket last night and the said something that made me think of Tech. They were referencing how spoiled the Dallas Cowboys fan had to be during the late 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. Cowboy fans were disappointed if they didn’t reach the Superbowl in those years! Now they just want to get to a playoff game. I get the same vibe with the Tech fans in some ways right now. We used to take bowl games for granite. Now, we just want to get to a bowl game. (Well, as a starting point – not as the end game)

Brought back memories!

I know exactly what you’re talking about. I lived in DFW for 25 years and got spoiled by the 90’s Cowboys. My friends and I used to go buy cheap tickets from scalpers and go to watch the great Aikman/E. Smith/Irvin Cowboys that won 3 super Bowls in 4 years—we even got into the 95 NFC championship game between Dallas and Green Bay FREE (thanks to a stockbroker friend of mine with the gift of gab). The current Boys look like a poor relation in contrast. Yeah, it doesn’t seem fair sometimes but that’s “show business.”

I know this team is gonna have a hard row to hoe, in contrast to the great Leach teams that spoiled us for so long. But I’ll still hope for the best from these guys and cheer them on. Despite the distain I still feel towards our admin (which I shared on bus rides to the games with many fans-young and old, and all different backgrounds), I’m still a fanatical Tech fan and will always be. Hope the guys grow up and make us proud!

If the reality is too painful, and I'm afraid it is son, follow the dream.

That is the other thing that was happening in Dallas until the past few years. As bad as it got, and it got pretty bad, folks just assumed it would get better next year. And the team teased just enough, in that mind set, for it to go on for some time. Not so much any more, but it is amazing how long that after glow lasted.

It’s probably a good thing, but at least at Tech – hard scrabble as we are and all – 2 bad seasons and we are no longer delusional about our next great run. At Tech, and this is just my opinion, we should cherish every run of success we have, because regardless of expectations in any given window in time – there is a lot to be learned from our history.

Glad to see that the Linebackers are gonna be the strength of the defense. At least that’s what they say. Im not going to get too excited because in Spring of 2011 i was very optimistic and kept saying we were gonna be a 60th ranked defense but we probably got worse.
I was never completely sold on the 3-4 or 4-2-5.
This year i have a “wait and see attitude”. As long as the Defense is slighty better overall and the offense improves, it may win us a few more games.

by Techcuz on Feb 21, 2012 12:17 PM CST reply actions

Still Clueless

That’s me I’m talking about, with regard to how I believe Tech will play next year. This team still has the feel of a brand new endeavor because of the massive changes in staff and players that has taken place over the last two years.

I’m optimistic that the offense will peform at a high level. However, the defense is still a complete mystery. Special teams are likewise going to be almost completely new as well. We have our punter back, but will have two new kickers in al likelihood.

We’ve all read that the recruiting has been excellent the last two years, but those are still young players. HFTB. Guns up!

Javares McRoy

Not too concerned that he is still learning the WR assignments. He was a red shirt last season and probably spent his weeks running the opponent offense as part of the scout team. Therefore, he had little time to learn our offense.

If this kid can return punts and pair on kickoffs with brother Ben, look out for some big ones with their speed. If he can produce on special teams, it will be fine with me that he spends all of 2012 learning WR routes (inside or outside).

6-6 Being Optomistic

I would possibly take this bet? Tuberville has showed nothing that he can excite the fans, fill the stadium, and play football. My Wazzou hat will fit in perfect at the Jones this fall. I bet Wazzou will have better record than Hance Tech. I cannot wait for WVU Holgerson to hang 80 on Tubby, then the truth will be known.

It literally pains me to hear him speak.

I guess after 2 years I still don’t trust him. Does it always seem like he’s leaving himself an “out” to anyone else? Like there’s an excuse always around the corner if need be. It could be just me though.

by ttufan111 on Feb 21, 2012 4:22 PM CST reply actions

He said the defense was bad, the run defense in particular, and that they needed to work on technique, leverage, etc., and that’s all very true. The defensive line has to be better at that and the linebackers were young and they shouldn’t have been playing last year (Dees and Egovoen), but I personally didn’t think that the back-ups were much, if any of an upgrade in the grand scheme of things (Cobbs made tackles, but he could be brutal if he guessed, which he did a lot and Hubert doesn’t do much for me). He said the offense needed to be better and we all agree with that. The tough part for me was the that this team didn’t get better through the year, progressively worse. That was frustrating.

I'm sure you're correct Seth

but I just can’t get behind this guy and I’m trying because I don’t have any other choices. I don’t like him and don’t think I ever will and I hate to say that. I’m hoping winning will change my attitude but after 2 years the guy still rubs me the wrong way. But I digress, either we win this year or I think he will be fired so I guess one way or another I’ll be happy this time next year. Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

by ttufan111 on Feb 21, 2012 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

I am not sure that it is any one thing. His threatening to go up in the stands and beat up the fans was kinda creepy and his not knowing what defense we were going to run last year was just bizarre or is it the birther comments. It just seems that there is something off about him, but if he had built on the 2009 and 2010 seasons then most of the just plain weird things about him wouldn’t bother us quite so much.

He also did that really wierd Tombstone pregame promo

It was just odd to see him dressed up like Wyatt Earp and making veiled threats. Who thought that was a good idea. Seemed like something Gundy would do. I was embarrassed for Tubberville by the “all hat no cattle” claim.

I think it depends

how we play. If we’re playing hard, but coming up short en route to 6-6 or 7-5, I can live with that. (I’m hoping for an upset or two to get us to 8 wins).

However, if we are still getting outclassed by the top third of the Big 12 and if we don’t show up against teams with similar or lesser talent, like last year, or if we’re sub .500 again, well. . .

Now ask yourself this, are you really ready for the Sonny Dykes era?

It's my thoughts as well

I thought he was a bad hire to begin with. There’s a reason Auburn fired him. His first year even though it was a 7-5 year the team didn’t play well all year and could have been a 5-7 year just like last year. I really don’t see us winning 6 games this year.

This season there needs to be more energy and emotion from the players and the coaches

If there seems to be a giving up attitude and a waning mid-stream in the games like we saw last season, then Tubs has done nothing to Coach or improve this team and we will not win games

Tubs has two jobs

1) Hire intelligent, competent coaches
2) do his PR bullshit for the good ole boy network

Well he is failing miserably at one of the two. I just don’t have any faith in the current hodge podge of a staff. The S@C guy is brutal and Brown is all over the place (previous areas of strength under Leach). We have turned over half of the staff in just two yrs. The coaching changes just don’t bode well for the near future.

2012 is going to another bad yr for Tech football.

2012 not good either.

I tend to agree. If the two original hires in the offseason had stayed, maybe a chance. But we’re still lacking in size at DT, which was a problem last year, debatable how much speed has increased and it remains to be seen if they’ll be able to tackle!

Tubby rarely shows any emotion – good or bad. I would like to see more “fire in their bellies” -Just watch other winning coaches on the sidelines… their fire sparks the whole team.
