Red Raider Gridiron | Tate Hired and Practice #3 Completed

TATE HIRED | The official site had the press release on the hiring of defensive line coach Fred Tate, although there is a footnote at the end of the release that says that Tate's hiring is pending a state mandated background check. So it's not officially official. Here's Tuberville on Tate:
"We are happy to welcome Fred Tate to our football family," said head coach Tommy Tuberville. "Fred is an excellent coach and Art Kaufman really spoke high of him from their time together at Southern Miss. He will bring a lot of experience to our defensive unit and we are thrilled to have him."
PRACTICE #3 | LAJ's Don Williams has the story on the third practice. Before getting to the practice, I did want to mention that there will be a scrimmage open to the public on Saturday morning at 10:45 am. Here are your notes: WR Marcus Kennard is out with a hamstring injury, and that's not good news for a guy looking to try and start. WR Eric Ward is also out with a shoulder injury and may not practice the rest of the spring. Perhaps the thought with Ward is that they know what they have with him and do not want to risk further injury . . . Tuberville also said that the team looks more athletic at linebacker:
"You look at that (linebacker) group without Chris Payne and Will Smith here," he said, "and we don’t have a lot of depth. So it’s really a blessing to have those two guys out here."
. . . IR Jakeem Grant has been mentioned in all three of Williams' notebooks, just something to watch . . .there's a lot more notes there so go check it out . . .
WESLEY SPEAKS AGAIN | I mentioned DT Dennell Wesley yesterday, but LAJ's Don Williams has a profile on Wesley this morning:
"It was kind of hard," Wesley said. "We managed and did what we had to do. It’s a new season coming up. We’ve got a new (defensive) coordinator. Hopefully, everything goes well from there."
Like several of his teammates, Wesley was pressed into service right away in his first year in the program. He’d redshirted in the first of his two years at Butler (Kan.) Community College, played for the Red Raiders as a sophomore last season and was credited with 21 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.
I guess I didn't realize that Wesley will be a junior this year, so that's good and I'm hopeful too.
A BIT ON BARROW | Just like with the commitments of WR Devin Lauderdale and CB Tavares Garner, I'm going to wait on preparing a profile on CB Will Barrow (5-10/160), but this is a big deal (Rivals | Scout | ESPN | 247 Sports | YouTube | Hudl) just as Lauderdale was a big deal. I don't know if Barrow is actually Barrow or Barrows as his name is spelled differently on a couple of places, although I think it's Barrow. Anyway, Barrow spoke with LAJ's Don Williams:
More after the jump.
"I chose Tech because of the coaching staff and the team," Barrow said. "The coaching staff is real encouraging. Coach (Robert) Prunty is a real, real good guy, a very encouraging man. Coach Tuberville is a great man as well.
"I felt good as soon as I stepped on the campus. I came home and talked to my parents about it, and they agreed as well, so that’s why I made my decision."
And Barrow is #21 on Lone Star Recruiting's Top 100:
Despite not being a very large defensive back, Barrows plays with a mean streak and tries to inflict pain each time he hits someone, which is something you rarely see from a corner at the high school level. In addition to that, Barrows has sensational top end speed to go along with strong cover skills. Right now, he can stay stride-for-stride with any receiver on the field, and he can also make an impact in shutting down the running game defensively. He does need to work on fine tuning his technique, but in terms of the complete package as a cornerback prospect, Barrows might be the guy closest to having it in the Lone Star State. It doesn’t take long for him to stand out on the football field. (McComas)
Well, that sounds awesome.
JUST DON'T WANT TO GO THERE | I'm going to go ahead and post the link to at the very least let you know that this is news and it's out there, but I really don't want any discussion about it. Suzanne Tuberville is under investigation as the man that she was in a car accident four months ago died yesterday. If you feel compelled to leave a comment about this, the go leave a comment on the DT or LAJ as they both have stories and comments sections that are incredibly enlightening as someone has died. I don't know if I should be, but I'm concerned about this getting out of control and I'm going to be out of the office today. I wish I didn't feel that way, but I do.

Awesome news on the recruiting.
I am excited about that.
Earlier, you had two potential D-line coaches mentioned and both showed promise. Then Tate came out of nowhere? When will the new coach arrive? I have never heard much about Tate, but if he works well with Coach K. and knows his stuff and can recruit some big uglies on DL, then I think it will work out. So many unknowns, we have to wait probably two years to see how he will do. Lots of new coaches, not much familiarity with Texas HS football, and no continuity. This all worries me. We need to beef up and toughen up on the line, immediately.
I really think Price put us in a difficult position and at the worst time. I hope Tate can excell as our coach and I suspect he will.
The coaching staff has holes in it but hopefully these coaches can all come together and use the adversity faced and turn it into wins.

The coaching changes are tough, very tough.
Who knows when making a hire, how it will turn out ?
It is discouraging to see the turn over in defensive staff. Don Williams described last season as a ‘meltdown.’ I consider his choice of word somehow telling without telling…even if it is based solely on stats and rankings, it is accurate.
The profession is a difficult one, comparable to being a professional in construction, one goes where the work is and one consantly looks for good connections and the next project with salary and security—for whatever short duration that can happen.
Yet, here we are with another young up and comer looking type of coach for the DL. I think the key remains in the choice for DC. We have a lot riding on Art Kaufman’s abilities…we in a very broad sense. We do want guys who can recruit, right now it is the coaching that will yield results…as much or more maybe as the decisions made in who to offer scholarships.

Guys, I am hoping for the best for our Red Raiders next year!
I am less concerned about recruiting than about solid, fundamental, tough-tackling defense coming to Lubbock, and DC who communicates up and down the chain of command really well.
JR Days & Early Commitments
Great to see some action come out of Tech’s Junior Days. Three quality commitments in the month of February for the class of 2013 is 3 more than the classes of 2012, 2011, 2010 & 2009 during the month of February combined. UT has been getting top talent at JR days since MB arrived. Now A&M is getting in on this too with 13 commitments so far this month or before. There a few are early commitments across the country, but historically more have happened in the state of TX making recruiting a little different here. If TT can garner the “commitment” of a few more kids this month & next I think he can make the 2013 class better than the last two. (Winning more than 5 this up coming season will help too.) Here are the number of commitments for TTU, A&M & UT before the end of February going back to 2009:
X TTU A&M UT
2013 3 13 5
2012 0 6 12
2011 0 4 17
2010 0 2 16
2009 0 3 12
I am pretty sure UT will have more commits this month. With that many TX kids deciding this early other schools don’t get much chance to even make an impression on them and the talent pool is smaller than reality. Since this is a trend that probably isn’t going to go away and probably will become more prevalent I am glad to see some early commitments to TTU this year. And these three don’t seem to be slouches either. Good job and keep it up.
If you count commits that did not ultimately stick, Tech did have a couple early commits the past few years. Derek David and his brother commited, but both did not end up here due to legal problems and switching/grades. Also last year, we had another one or two commit early, but end up parting ways for whatever reasons. I think I remember a LB or something.
And I think Javares McRoy was a super early commit to us with Leach before changing to Florida…before ultimately ending up here. So we have had a couple, but not exactly successful or normal circumstances.
probably correct
The David brothers are two I forgot. Javares committed his JR year when Ben committed, and switched after ML got gone so he was very early. Still not major numbers, but better than zero. I would think that over the next few weeks we will add to our total commitments before this school year ends. If we have 5-10 quality commits by then it will give this class a good foundation early that can be built on in the summer & fall. What these early commitments are showing me – I think & hope – is maybe we aren’t as behind (UT, OU, A&M) as we have been in the past. And looking at the two TT classes I am hoping this signals another climb up the national ranking this time next year for the class of 2013. Also, TT & company are possibly just now getting the TX relationships strengthened to the point where the recruiting will improve more than we expect for 2013, 2014 and beyond. (I know we are not competing with A&M on the field, but we are in the recruiting arena. They will still be major competition for us in building the future of the program.)
Interesting was that when I was lloking right before Feb. 1, neither David brother had committed to any D-1 team.
I wonder where they ended up?
Logan I think is still in JC
I guess he was thinking he would come out with three years to play. In 2010 there was a story he redshirted at Blinn so that would fit with him playing 2011 as a FR.
Remember Derrick was arrested so he may have ended up having all offers pulled or more likely he is busy with lawyers, trial, parole – who knows.
About Suzanne
I have not read the news about this.
All I am saying is, I offer prayers for the man killed in the wreck and Suzanne and to both families. These things are horrific and the flashbacks never leave you alone. Sad news, I hope for the best going forward.
Very sad and tragic
I can’t imagine the emotions going through each family. May they rely on His strength for He is present in time of trouble.

Sad situation ... thoughts and prayers for both families
The fact checker in me just had to make note that one of the articles has the wrong information on the hospital the victim was taken to when the accident happened in Nov 2011:
The DT said he victim was taken to University Medical Center
But the LAJ stated it was Covenant Medical Center (Methodist Hospital)

My prayers for all concerned
This is always a tough situation. It takes only a moment for an accident to happen—that happened to me a few times when I was younger. Feel blessed that I and the other parties were not ever hurt. My condolences to the family of the deceased.
Tweet from Stevens...
He is asked if he will be ready to play by beginning of season and he responds ‘if it’s god’s plan’.
This kid is the real deal and seems to be as good of a person as he is ball player.
This is a 3 ring circus up in here......

I hope
Eric can get back on the field this season. He is one of the best RBs in the conference, and I believe he will have a career in the NFL.
It's all good.

I second that
I’m pretty sure if he does make it back he will be a leader among Big-12 RB’s.
