Tuberville Needs Our Help!

Come on everyone. It's windy in Lubbock and the weather is weird!

Imagine what our recruiting would look like if our football team had an indoor practice facility.

Fox-robot-capture_medium

Imagine how many victories we could achieve if we had one!

We are one of only two Big 12 schools without an indoor practice facility.

Some of you skeptics out there might be asking, "if we build something that everyone else already has, how is that an advantage?"

That, my friend, might sound logical, but it is the wrong question to be asking.

Use your imagination!!

Mind of recruit: Dude, I must be hallucinating. There's, like, no goal posts in here. Heh heh. Heh heh. Duude.

And what about the Athletic Training Center (a.k.a. The bubble)?

Described as alternately "venerable" by the Texas Tech Athletics Website and "spacious" by the Official Handbook, the Athletic Training Center originally built in 1986, "contains over 3 million cubic feet of space, making it the largest full-circle membrane structure in the world for use by people including a 60 yard football. "

Technically the ATC ought to be the largest indoor training center in the "world."

Unfortunately, the football turf size is too small relative to those of other schools.

(Tech has also run practice at the indoor practice facility at Frenship High School, a $7 million, 60,000 square foot facility with a 55 yard football turf that was financed with municipal bonds.)

Text-atc7-lg_medium

Mind of recruit: Wait, are those tennis courts? What is this? TCU?

Conclusion

You see. It all comes down to what the recruits think.

If a recruit is good, and he wants to win championships, and he wants to play right away, and he wants to be successful in academics, he can go anywhere.

Throw an indoor practice facility in the mix, and it's a whole 'nother ball game.

Build it and they will come.

$10 million.

Come on Red Raiders!!

Do it!!

WE can build it. We could get Bob Villa to supervise. We could get Lowes, Home Depot & others to donate material. We definitely have Tech alum who are architects and engineers. We get students, alum and community members to build it. Fundraising needs would be minimal.

Yes, this is the solution.

It’s’ not windy for every practice. It doesn’t rain for every practice either.

I’ve never heard another HC whine about the weather as much as Tuberville does and I started at Tech in ’84.

Having said that, I have no problem and can support getting our own indoor practice facility. But then I would suggest Tuberville quit whining to the public about the weather and start doing some serious fundraising for the indoor facility.

Which football team?? … football or "futbol"

Build it big enough for a full Soccer field and than you would have plenty of sideline and end-zone room for the football practice field. Goal-Post on one end and a Soccer Net (goalie box) on the other end.
Talk about growing a program … give it a few years and Tech would have the Best Soccer team in the country and hopefully a NC team in football.

<sarc> You could even bring swimming back and have the pool underneath the floor of the field. Design it so the grass rolls out like it does at the "University of Phoenix Stadium" in Glendale, AZ..

If they let the Soccer team use it too … then I am for it.

I’m trying to figure out why there are any new facilities on the Texas Tech campus. Dan Spencer gets a renovated field, $5 million, and that program hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2004. Should have told Dan that he doesn’t get any upgrades until he wins, more specifically he needs to win championships. I also hear that Spencer wants an indoor facility and last time I checked, there is a perfectly good multi-use facility and it’s already on campus and it’s perfectly fine. Either that or use the indoor softball facility, nothing wrong in sharing this stuff.

Same goes for the softball program. There wasn’t even a program until 1996 and they had a field built for them in 1999, should have just used the intramural fields until they won, and then the damn field was renovated in 2009 and 2010. Not to mention, they have an indoor facility. Harrumph. Before Shanon Hays got here, this program was a perennial loser and did nothing to earn the right for a facility or even a field. There were field already there and last time I checked, softball was played outside, in the weather where there is weather.

If I could find quotes from Spencer or Hays about needing to upgrade the facilities to attract recruits because we all know that recruits don’t like nice facilities, can’t figure out why we built or renovated the facilities for either of these programs.

Still scratching my head why the soccer team was given a new soccer complex in 2006 considering this program has been at the bottom or near the bottom since the program’s inception. This was a $5 million facility. Highest conference finish was 4th in the 1st or 2nd year of the program. Should have used the intramural fields until this program wins.

And I don’t even know if I can stomach to think about why the United Spirit Arena was built. Can’t figure out what was wrong with the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum and it’s not as if the men’s program was lighting the world on fire, pretty sure that James Dickey got the program in NCAA trouble and ran the program into the ground by the time the USA opened in 1999. There is nothing wrong with the Coliseum and am pretty sure that it’s still used today and is doing just fine and it’s not as if the USA is ever really even close to a sell-out recently, so there was no need to build a bigger facility. Thank God for Marsha Sharp who actually justified some new buildings.

To clarify

Are you saying that you don’t think the football team needs an indoors practice facility until it starts winning?

Still don't understand either...

…why other facilities for sports that were at or near the bottom and/or in decline got upgrades, yet the football team, even under ML was doing well and didn’t have the indoor facility. I’d be curious to even know if our previous coach ever asked or wanted one.
Regardless, I’m with LondonRaider on this – it needs to get built. Lubbock has horrible weather and as mentioned on previous blogs, if it keeps practices on schedule and valuable learning time on track, then technically it should be a positive for our players.
On a side note, I know the TCU facility well and it’s really nice, however I can tell you that Coach P specifically likes to use it in the summer, because it as no a/c (only fans) and he’s always believed that his players need to be ready and prepared for the heat. Now that he’s in the Big 12, not sure it will be the case anymore.

Maybe football fell behind because the administration did not want ML to have the proper tools to do his job. If we could sell tickets to the indoor practice facility, then I bet we would have one.

I don't understand the fan debate on this - Shouldn't this be Hocutt's decision?

Why doesn’t Coach Tuberville speak to the AD instead of the media: “Kirby we need a football practice facility like all the other Big 12 programs. Build it where the current practice field sits. We can practice in Jones Stadium while construction takes place. Use that new TV money we are getting from the recent Big 12 TV football contact re-sign. If you want to spread the cost over a few year’s budgets, call the Hub City bankers who paid for the parking garage in the old Furrs Cafeteria parking lot across the street. Those guys will loan money to anybody. Don’t forget to bring a Phi Delt when you go to ask for the dough.”

I guess I don’t understand the appeal to the public sent out through the media. Is Tubs trying to put fan pressure on Hocutt to get this done for his program? Or does he think somebody is going to read his comments in the paper & write a $12,000,000 check? I’m all for it. Use the Nike approach. Just do it.

We could add huge fans and make it windy. We could totally mimic the outside weather to create game time situations!

by ReneR on Feb 23, 2012 12:03 PM CST reply actions

All kidding aside ...

I agree with LondonRaider, it should be built

I like Blackbeard’s architecture choice. We need something that is going to survive the West Texas winds and weather and the bubble format that UT has can collapse if the pressure inside and outside changes quickly. Like the Rec-Center’s Pool Bubble used to do. It can’t have a flat roof because it might leak or collapse during the "monsoon" season or a Lubbock Blizzard.

We need a building that says "Strength", that says we are the "Best" and that reflects that the Tech sports facilities are the most modern and use the latest technology. Not some long oblong garage looking building will do.
.

( I know I am in the minority on my next statement)
I was not joking when I mentioned that two Tech teams could benefit from this facility. I think both the Football team and the Soccer team would benefit from this facility. If the IPF is made wide enough for a soccer field and long enough to have an End-Zone on one end and a Goalie-Box on the other, then there is plenty of sideline room for coaches and trainers and visitors to use and players aren’t running into walls.

What the hell? The golfers are getting a new clubhouse and apparently at least one golfer likes having new facilities?

What’s the best part about getting a new clubhouse?
Oh wow, the list goes on and on about that. Probably the main thing for me is getting a locker room and having our own locker. I think that’s going to be so awesome, being able to store all of our stuff there. Everything we take to the golf course will already be there. It will be great.

And get this . . . another golfer thinks new facilities will help with recruiting:

What’s going to be the best part about getting the new clubhouse at the Rawl’s Golf Course?
Oh my gosh, everything! Obviously, for recruiting, but just for us to enjoy as well to have a locker room. A place to hang out as a team. It will help us so much, and it will help us recruit especially.

Someone needs to tell them that we need championships and more wins on the ledger before they get this stuff. I haven’t been able to find the data, but it appears the women’s team hasn’t won any Big 12 championships or national championships. Where’s the freaking outrage? Do I need to cuss more in order for people to realize that I’m serious and down-to-earth all at the same time? I can’t believe that these players would think that new facilities would help with recruiting. Last time I checked, golf was played on a golf course, not indoors in a clubhouse. This is bullsh.

Kinda like walleyball. And then build an ever bigger dome for golf and use it for ultimate frisbee golf (no wind). C’mon, let’s build one a give it a try.

I will point out that on game days at ut,

their IPF is open to the public for a substantial fee and equiped with numerous huge screen TV’s and copious amounts of alcolhol served for an additional substantial fee at a number of fine bars within…………………so there is that………….but would that make the IPF multipurpose?

I thought we were supposed to be pointing out that we shouldn’t care about how recruits perceive new or renovated facilities, that the athletes at TTU shouldn’t care about having new, renovated or nice facilities, how teams that play outdoors don’t need indoor facilities, teams that don’t win don’t need new or renovated facilities and have learned today that under-performing coaches should be replaced with day laborers in order to pay for all of these facilities. I guess I didn’t get where all this was going, I think I look pretty silly now that I think about it.

My thought

Is that if tech can build it without donations…go for it. If you need donations, the timing is great after a 5 win season and a real crappy economy.
I would rather hear hocutt on the topic.

This is a 3 ring circus up in here......

by oldschoolraider on Feb 24, 2012 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

Then the timing would never be great for the baseball team, the softball team, the soccer team, the golf teams, the men’s basketball teams, etc. Mostly all built with donations for programs that weren’t winning either, the lone exception is Marsha Sharp and that’s it. You can’t justify any of those other facilities using that logic.

Great...

Fundraising in this economy will be a challenge. The timing after our bowl streak ending isn’t lethal….but not helpful.

For me, I don’t care if there’s a new IPF or not, but I just found it strange the reasons given to not build something. If Tuberville can fund raise, then great. If he can’t, then oh well. I don’t see the problem or the outrage with building it and in my opinion, it sounds like that in order to build it, the money is going to have to be raised, not given.

by Seth C on Feb 24, 2012 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

I should clarify. I found the reasons to be illogical with what’s happened previously in that if we applied the logic being espoused with not building this facility with everything else on campus, then it was problematic. Additionally, I think that Tuberville is going to have to fund raise and TTU isn’t going to give much, if any, of the money. I don’t know anything, that’s just my hunch, which is why Tuberville is being so vocal.

For me

I just wish he would quit talking about it & complaining about the weather (umm…hello…we all know about the weather in Lubbock…been like that forever) and get to the fundraising.

IMO Tuberville needs to put some action behind his words or move on. Yes I did just say someone else needs to move on, but there ain’t no changing the weather. The man needs to adapt or build his bubble.

If there is still an opportunity to have it built then why can’t he mention it if he thinks it will help. He usually has a 30 second clip about it and in the grand scheme of things it’s not that big of a deal.

I think it’s great if he can raise the funds to have it built. I would like to see action behind his words as opposed to a continued explanation as to why the facility is needed.

It would be great if the next thing we heard from him about it was an announcement of an official fundraising campaign complete with goals.

I still don’t care one way or another. And if anything, if we all believe that Tuberville isn’t going to be here long building an IPF will benefit the program for a couple of decades. At the very least, he is looking to benefit the program after he is gone.

Even the most cynical Red Raider (looking in the mirror)

would agree that we shouldn’t be the last in our conference to have one of these. I do think that the timing of events in the last two years are going to make this a rough go at it. Those events being the fanbase divide at tech and the economy. Regardless of everything that has gone down, the brand that is Texas Tech needs to be a focus.

Seth across all sports … you nailed it:

Seth….. you CAUGHT all DTN members and followers NAPPING and you PICKED US Off one by one. It was a QUICK HOOK of words that caused some to STEP UP TO THE PLATE of words and discussions.
You SWUNG AWAY and made us all pay attention. Your replies were WILD PITCHES that some thought might be a SWITCH-HITTER.
Some took OFFENSE but you weren’t finished LOADING THE BASES because you had CAUGHT US LOOKING.
In every reply, you declared an AUDIBLE and were GOING FOR IT.
You were a MAN-IN-MOTION and you were in full POSSESSION of your readers.
It was not a SINGLE-ELIMINATION , or a SNAP, or SPOT to yell FOUL … you were CALLING THE PLAYS. You were CHARGING on all CYLINDERS.
Sometimes it seemed you had us DOUBLE-TEAMED. You had an ESTABLISHED POSITION but we could not determine if it was FAKE or INTENTIONAL and you had us off GUARD.
You set-up your RELEASE after your very good SCREEN.
It was a SLAM DUNK.
Your FOLLOW THROUGH was well worded.

GAME, SET, MATCH.

or in honor of the Tech Chess Team leaving … CHECK-MATE.

Sure... an IPF would be great... and we should have one...

but I don’t want Tuberville to be the pitchman… it just feels like what he’s saying, “if only I had an IPF, we’d win games”… if Hocutt asked for it, I’d have a much different attitude…

and if the golf team, track team, baseball team, curling team, chess team, elephant polo team, or sportf#cking team wanted one, I’d be all for it… just not Tuberville

I don't really know what happened here

But it’s no Travis letter.
I guess it just isn’t widely read in London. Hmm.

Google maps looks like they could just stick vertical precast slabs in a trench around the fieldturf practice field and bubble over the top without too much trouble. Crude, but Is elegance or perfection the point of the exercise?

If the Jones ever goes fully “bowl” it looks like the south end would require that “the bubble” be torn down and the south building to go away. I wonder if this is what is really on the radar? Have a look at Google maps yourself!

Still not sure why there is a sudden need for it or why all the focus, but this could be the (an) answer.

by Raider289 on Feb 28, 2012 12:28 AM CST reply actions

I guess Tommy really does need our help now.

But not in a positive building football program effort anymore. I need less drama and some positive stability and less negative publicity. Sadly, we will be a household name soon enough and for a long time. We just have to be living examples that the image of a few do not reflect the character of all. We have to remember this when we say that not all Aggies are alike, not all Longhorns.
