Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville said Thursday he is more confident than ever the Red Raiders will re-emerge as a contender in the Big 12 under his leadership.
Yet, he knows his proclamations alone will not be enough to silence a loud faction of Tech fans and alumni still raging over the dismissal of former coach Mike Leach.
"As coaches, we have a job to do," Tuberville said before the start of an alumni function at Gilley's. "I have no dog in that fight.... I'm here now, and I have a job to do. We have to go out and recruit and coach and do the best we can."

I cant believe
A damn thing that mans says.
But, I’m sure, I’ll believe if we start winning.
If I was Tubs, I would show replays of OSU, UT, Baylor, Mizzou and ISU games over and over and over. With no music to drown out the absolutely horrendous football being played.
2012. 9 wins. No Excuses, Tommy.
I’m really trying hard to catch up today, but I also wanted to point out this article from the LAJ this morning:
During his rundown, Tuberville began and ended with a decidedly apologetic tone. He promised fans gathered at a rented ballroom just south of downtown he and the team are displeased about last season’s disappointing 5-7 record.
He said he and the team gathered recently for their first meeting of the new year, summarizing the mood with a quip about the team’s failure to land a postseason bowl game: "That’s the last time we want to sit at home during the holidays."
I’m encouraged by the tone and honesty. Still need to see results on the field, but this is the right step.

Out of the same article ...
Not quite sure where he is going with this:
Defense, the coach said repeatedly, is the lynchpin in Tech’s success moving forward.
"You can’t go out there and think you need to score 45-50 points a game and win," he said. "You can’t do that."
Memo to the HC:
The last time I checked, the objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent. Our offense is designed to score 45-50 points a game when you allow it. If the defense could hold teams under 30 … 10 win seasons will be the norm.

Good point
However if you can’t stop another team from scoring more points than you it doesn’t matter if you put up 72. If they put up 73 you lose.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
See your point ...
That’s why I wasn’t quite sure where he was going with his comment. I agree if you don’t have a defense you could be in trouble unless your Baylor or OSU.

WAY more fun
I would gladly pay to watch 73-72 – that is some entertaining football. 7-3??? Nope. I’ll watch that on TV until I remember it’s time to rearrange my sock drawer.
Who ate your bowl of sunshine this morning, thundercloud?
You might as well take defense out of the entire game.
Such a silly comment.
Shawn Johnson... she's a nice lady
I didn't seen anything funny there.
The man has a point. I take it you have a different point. Goodie goodie. No need to be insulting.
"They challenged us. They said, 'Here, try to run past us, try to run inside us.' And they were better at preventing that than we were throwing and catching it." --Mike Leach
I'm willing to give Noah the benefit of the doubt
and guess he didn’t read the following line from Arizona Raider’s post:
“If the defense could hold teams under 30 … 10 win seasons will be the norm.”
Because if he did read that sentence then the only one suggesting to, “take defense out of the entire game” would be Noah.

"You can’t go out there and think you need to score 45-50 points a game and win,"
I was there and the tone of the comment was that “you CAN’T go out there and think you HAVE to score 45-50 points every time to win”. Clearly the cupboard was bare in the defense in terms of experience and seniors. Face it, Leach HATED to recruit and the defense was the last thing on his mind. That’s been clearly documented. I didn’t get the inference he was knocking Leach, but merely reminding all that you can’t expect to consistently win with the attitude of outscoring the other guys. Now CTT’s got coaches he’s worked with before and he mentioned at least twice that “these guys had contracts” and there’s not much you can do. He’s got 2 nice recruiting classes and he also reminded everyone you don’t start the next recruiting class the next day. They’ve already been working the 2013 class from the day he was hired. I’ll take 2 top 25 classes in a row and now look for a 3rd.
Row well and live...Ben-Hur
Thanks for the clarification ...
I don’t think he was knocking Leach either, he just looks at football from a different perspective than we are used to. Baylor and OSU won by outscoring folks, not playing good defense so it can be done.
On another note, if he allows the offense to bloom and improves the defense to a top 40 unit, we will when at least 10 games every year.

Geez, I agree with you AGAIN AZ
I didn’t take it as a slam against Leach, and I’m highly sensitive to that kind of thing. I took it as a lack of respect/understanding/acknowledgement (couldn’t find the right word) for what we do well. Take that and build on it. Don’t fix the part that ain’t broken.
Who ate your bowl of sunshine this morning, thundercloud?
I think the coach's words are more in the context that
he has read DTN and has come to the realization that we are ranked something like 114 in overall defense and that will require anyone to score 45-50 points to have a chance to win in the Big12.
Or something like that.
Then I do not read into it that he wants or expects to become a win by defense program, cause he likes the big offense. (Never had one like this before and realizes it is fun—he watches ands enjoys seeing his son play qb !! )
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
I like it, I like it all!!
Excellent points TallMike:
1. He’s finally reading DTN for advice. Thank you!! What took so long? Clearly we WILL be competing for championships this year!!
2. He gets the Big 12 now & being a win by defense (&clock mismanagement) program isn’t realistic!!
3. He LOVES the high flying pass happy Big 12 offenses. He thinks scoring points is FUN & actually contribute significantly to winning games!! As a bonus it also fires up your fan base & increases revenue!! WOW!!
You know what all of this means??? He is drinking OUR kool-aid!!! (Of course ours is the real thing, probably more like gatorade…)
Thank you for your awesome insight, TallMike, I really like the way you think!!
Who ate your bowl of sunshine this morning, thundercloud?
Sorry Grill
I just can’t give you a pass on your comment that “defense was the last thing on his mind”. That’s just a bullshit statement. The FACT is that to be good on offense you have to understand and think defense. The FACT is that Leach’s defenses put up way better numbers than anthing that tubs has shown. The FACT also is that if you are playing the game YOU HAVE TO THINK you are going to put up 45 to 50 points, in fact you have to believe you are going to score on every play.
for Heaven's sake, just grow a pair

Admittedly
I don’t get all the x’s & o’s or know all the right football lingo. But isn’t the key to the spread offense having wide splits on the offensive line & all the receivers to confuse or spread the defense thin in coverage?
Sounds to me like you have to be thinking and know defense to make that offense work. But like I said, I didn’t grow up playing football and don’t have a full grasp of all the schemes so I could be wrong.
Who ate your bowl of sunshine this morning, thundercloud?
I seriously don't
think he will be here to see that third class.
I agree AZ Raider
I get that he’s the head coach, but it sounds like he’s taking away what we’ve been not just good at but GREAT at for more than a decade.
I hope I’m interpreting that incorrectly and he means, “in addition to scoring 45-50 points a game” we’ve got to have a defense. I’m all over that. But please don’t touch our high scoring offensive scheme (painful exceptions last season duly noted).

Maybe Tuberville decides he actually has to coach this team in order to win. His rude awakening to the Big 12 hasn’t been what he planned. Here’s hoping we see and energized and engaged coach combing the sidelines in the Fall.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
What a pile of crap he laid out there
Tubs doesn’t seem to have the mental horsepower to understand that fans (even Leachers!) have evaluated him and his team on it’s own merits?
Just when you start thinking he might have removed his head from an orifice, he goes and insults the intelligence of people who – I don’t even need to explain this.
I am shocked he would say something that dumb when he is trying to get people on board and sell the program.
Backpedaling
The quote is from the Dallas author, not Tubs. This is not immediately clear.
Shame on John Henry for putting words in his mouth.
Gutter Journalisim.
And credit where it’s due: Tubs didn’t say any of that garbage.
I have resigned myself to the fact that Tuberville will be the coach in the upcoming season. I am going to take him on the words that he has been speaking and pull for his, and ultimately Tech’s success. The best case scenario is that this ship gets righted this season. I don’t want to see another complete waste of a year.
If Tech doesn’t have a good start in conference play, I hope he is still praising his team, and not tossing the team under the bus like last year.
Get your kicks, on route 66...
I still think Tubs is the right man for the job

I'm not convinced
but I certainly hope you are correct.
After losing the efforts of the entire team, following a monumental victory over Oklahoma, I need to see a drastic change in the approach of this team before I can endorse him as “the man”.
I’m hoping when the dust settles, we have a stronger more complete program.
I cant be sure
I think he is a good coach, but what he tried to do here has failed up to this point, and now he is, literally, having to “Coach” his way out of it, rather than CEO his way out of it.
We’ll have a better understanding of what Tommy is capable of at the end of this year. With UT, OU and WVU coming to Lubbock, there is no excuse not to AT least push 8 wins.
2012. 9 wins. No Excuses, Tommy.
Agree
Not trying to make excused for Tubs but last year was just a cluster of bad D coaching/coaching decisions, injuries, depth, and youth. He needs to produce this year for sure. I just hope we alumni can give him more time. I can’t help but think if he keeps recruiting like he is we will have a good teams for years to come.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips."
This !!
Putting a solid staff together is something that any coach would want. His first staff was not solid, something has been amiss in it the past two seasons even with the good recruiting. I take the changes as a good hard look at what is needed and then the hard decisions to make the changes.
It does remain to see how well they work together. I continue to read good things about our new OL coach…he may become pretty special before he departs TTU.
We all got to think about what if’s when Brown was tossed around abit with job offers a couple of months ago……..
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
We averaged just under 34 points a game.
There aren’t too many folks who would argue that “…34 is just not enough” on most average Saturdays in most games. It was for US last year because our defense gave up an average of 39 points a game.
Our scoring touch, while off a small amount from years past and certainly not as “pretty” as we’re used to, was not the biggest issue. Giving up nearly 40 points per Saturday was, and we all recognize that. You drop that down to the high 20s or low 30s and we are back to 8-9 wins a year.
Can we do it? Who knows…but he’s right in that you can’t rely on having to lay 45 points up there every Saturday. It’s too big a burden in a very competitive conference. It’s a bonus when you can get that many in a game, but to HAVE to score that much in a game each week in order to win is unrealistic.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
34 points seems like enough until one looks at the rest of the Big 12
sadly, that was only good enough for 7th place … We have to score more points and improve our defense, it’s a both/and, not an either or.
by Arizona Raider on Feb 3, 2012 6:33 PM CST up reply actions
I don't care
if we only put up 14 points and win or 40 points and win. A win is a win.
The key to consistently winning is for our defense to keep the other team’s offense off the field. More 3 and outs, and gaining turnovers, gives us so many more options on offense,as far as play selection and clock management. This also helps to keep the defense fresh.
We have the talent. Tubs and his staff just need to do their jobs, and the wins will come.
It's all good.

True enough all you need is one point more to get a win.
But scoring about 2 td’s per quarter is really a lot of fun to watch !!!
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
I also enjoy
watching a high scoring offense. I would really like to see some 35-0 shutouts by our Red Raiders this season.
It's all good.

Yep
Didn’t enjoy being on the other side of that against OSU last year at all.

That's right!
It turned me into a thundercloud, looking for a bowl of sunshine to eat. Growwwll!!
I miss the excitement
All the TD’s, knowing we could score with a minute or two left to play.

That's what she said
Is it okay to do that to your own post?

Can football results for 2012 be turned around in a hurry?
Position coaches and coordinator changes can make an immediate change in a program.
For an example look at what the Houston Texans did this year. Wade Phillips brought in some great position coaches.
The secondary coach is very positive, doesn’t harp on mistakes and knows how to teach fundamentals, something the previous position coach didn’t have.
They brought in 4 – 5 players via free agency and the draft that brought depth and athleticism to areas they needed.
But the best thing that was brought to the defense was an attitude. the players believed in Phillips and thus confidence rose immediately.
After watching the Texans for years and seeing bad to average defenses, coordinators who were buddies of the coach who had never been coordinators, this year was unbelievable. Worth the season tickets finally.
I know Phillips crapped out with the Cowboys , and I thank Jerry for opportunity to get Wade. It shows Phillips is a great coordinator……head coach? Who knows
I hope next football season Tubs shows he picked the position coaches, coordinators, and the players to make the Red Raiders successful as well.
The attitude is the biggest factor however. Do the players believe and want to play for a coach so they don’t disappoint him?
The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right. -Mark Twain
He needs to win this season
Anything less than 7 wins, he should be kicked out of Lubbock. 8 wins means a winning conference season. 7 wins means a losing conference season.
He finally has the talent, he needs to produce and quit making excuses. Simple as that.
Credit...
Where it’s due, he pulled a feat in keeping this class intact despite a putrid, and I mean putrid, showing in conference play this year. Despite that, I don’t feel at all confident that there will be improvement next year. It’s bothersome, because the last two recruiting classes should instill some confidence, yet, still I sit here no less disheartened than I was while watching the Ok St Cowboys destroy us, with our old offense no less, on my friggin BIRTHDAY! (Thank goodness for a great bottle of birthday wine, or who knows what woulda happened that day.) Most annoying, is I still feel like his rhetoric is one consistently TRASHING our previous staff and what was, BAR NONE, the greatest offense in the country over the course of a decade. The more I hear him speak about how you can’t do things the way we used to do them, the more I hope for a bowl invite (though I don’t believe for a second Tuby can win more than 6) into whatever bowl that pitted our “great” coaching staff squarely against none other than Mike Leach on the other sideline.

If he could
somehow pull 7 wins out of the hat (which I doubt) could put us in the Holiday Bowl vs WSU. We can only dream.
Did I get a hint of swagger from ol Tommy?
Anything is better than talking down about our team. Get cocky and channel that into some serious arse kicking.
