Longhorns dominate Red Raiders from start to finish, 74-57 | Red Raiders
"It’s not a good formula," Tech coach Billy Gillispie said of his team’s early deficit, which it faced due, in part he added, to breakdowns in its help-defense schemes. "The first play of the game we helped uphill and didn’t really know where our man was. … "Those are plays that inexperienced players make, but we’re to the point now, on Feb. 4, where we shouldn’t be making those kinds of defensive mistakes because of our little margin for error."
Apparently this game was out of hand from the beginning of the game. You can check out the box score here.

Wow
I know the future is bright, but right this is worse than football. Looking forward to more wins in both sports. I think it will happen.
Guns Up!
Oh-fer
How many times has Tech lost every conference game in Mens Basketball?

I would guess that we have never gone zero wins in conference.
This year it looks likely. I think it hurt tremendously that there was almost no carryover from PK team and players to this one. That forced BG to start from scratch with no experience or leadership in place. I am guessing that over the summer that one or two of these freshmen will develop into leaders on/off the court and that will make a big difference.
"Forced BCG to start from scratch"
To be fair, there were 8 non-senior players on last year’s roster, but only 3 returned. I suspect BCG is at least partially responsible for the lack of carryover.
Tech sports has become a joke
This is worse than mediocrity, it’s straight crap. I BCG, and I have a feeling he will turn it around. For some reason, and unlike football, I believe this coach will make the team better, but right now, we are the bottom dwellers of the big 12

This is worse than our football team...though they had a deeper hole to get out of, apparently.
Has anyone ever gone o-fer in Big XII conf play in basketball? We’ve got three weeks to get one.
Man, this sports year at Tech reminds me WAY too much of my undergrad years in Lubbock. How’s the music scene these days on the Plains?
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.

Patience Will Be Rewarded
in both football and basketball. This year sucks, but 2012-2013 will be better. The year after will be better still. As difficult as it is to stomach these bad teams, I think we’ll be better off in the long run with coaches who purge the roster and make the programs their own.
More questions than answers
Perusing the box score: Once again, Petteway starts but only plays 10 unproductive minutes (0 pts, 0 reb, 1 TO, 4 PF). Willis starts and plays 16 unproductive minutes (0 pts, 2 reb, 0 asst). Walk-ons Adams and Lammert each played more than these 2 starters. Crockett has been playing well lately and was relatively productive (3 reb, 6 pts), but played just 11 minutes. Turnovers were reasonable, but the team was outrebounded badly.
One of the frustrating things about this team is that it’s difficult to see any improvement. I didn’t expect that many wins, but I did expect a young, inexperienced team to be much better by the end of the season. So far, I’m not seeing that. I think it’s telling that BCG mentions that the players continue to make mistakes they shouldn’t. He also notes UT’s athleticism in apparent contrast to his own team’s.
I am starting to question whether these players can improve and develop into a competitive B12 team. And I wonder if these are really the guys BCG wanted and whether he thinks they can compete. If he makes no cuts, the roster only loses Lew and gains 2 new faces; so next year’s team won’t be much different from this year’s. If he makes significant changes, the new players will be even younger, more inexperienced and unfamiliar with his system than the ones he has.
Not to pick on the kid, but I think Petteway (or Willis) is a good example of many freshmen making the transition from HS.
Petteway was a pretty good force on his HS team’s game. Whatever he did and how he did it has be the culmination of his years of playing a game mostly his way. I don’t think he was coached all that well meaning with a great focus on disciplined play either on defense or offense.
He has a good body, he is very active and lively on the court, plays hard and plays fast, those attributes added to his size and that he can handle a basketball, make a shot occasionally, and snag a rebound occasionally are likely what got him to TTU, got to include the factor that the HC did not have a lot of time to prepare a signing class.
Part of Petteway’s challenge as he comes into such a high level, sophisticated, demanding form of bb as we see in Div-1 / Big12 play, is unlearning the habits that got him to the top of his HS career, habits which worked vs the competition he experienced but will not work again good experienced mature basketball players who are driven and pushed to play just so so on a Div1 team. There is freedom for a player to be himself in college bb but there is also a tremendous level of discipline and focus on team basketball, defense and offense.
The learning curve is pretty steep and starts with unlearning. Had we a mature program, Petteway might not have gotten an offer, had he it is likely he would have redshirted and then found himselve striving to get a minute or two here and there to get game experience with his junior or senior year his time for impactful play.
I still like who I think he can be.

Good comments
I wasn’t picking on Petteway specifically either. Just can’t figure out why he continues to make the starting lineup, but then doesn’t play more than 10-15 minutes.
Certainly agree with your comments about the transition from HS to D1. This is magnified on Tech’s team due to the large number of freshmen that play a lot of minutes. Most teams simply are not dependent on that many new players to contribute. Throw in a new coaching staff and it’s not a recipe for immediate success. Still, I was hoping to see more progress up that steep learning curve by now (2/3 of the way through the season).
BCG's still working on this team.
This is the grubby part of the job, when you’re rebuilding a program. We’ll start seeing progress before long, but it’s gonna be ugly for a while.
