Welker

With Gronkowski hobbled, Welker becomes the go to guy. So far, so good with 4 catches for 42 yards at the half, with NE up 10 to 9 over the NYG. While the Giants were strong early, the Pats have come on late to gain the momentum. Dogfight the second half. Both these teams are really good. It is just who makes the least mistakes. With that, I like New Englands chances of winning this Super Bowl.

If he had just been able to pull it in ... the Pats would have won

and with the score at 17-15 I would have won the office pool

Why the Wes hate?

That was a difficult pass to catch and he made a great effort to get it, but no one can get them all. Wes made some huge catches throughout his career and undoubtedly has missed some. This one may hurt more, but I can’t deride him. It was just to far up and outside, with him trying to turn around into position to get the pass as it was just thrown to the wrong side. Great effort, again, by Wes. You have to give credit to Manning and the Giant receivers for making some amazing plays to take the lead and win this one. Both defenses were tough, especially down near the endzone, but the Giant D was just a play better. If Gronkowski had been a step closer in the end zone to catch the deflection, the Pats would have been the ones celebrating. Woe to the Pats. Congratulations to the Giants. Now, next year let us hope it is Dallas and Texas in the Super Bowl.

Thank you!!

Seriously, Welker has had an amazing career with so many unbelievable grabs. And he will continue to be a top performer. He works SO hard, never giving less than 100%.

Yes, that was a huge play. But it was far from an easy catch – it would have been an extraordinary catch if he had made it. It was painful to watch but no knocks on Wes from me.

He was just fine.

and he’ll be better next year.
He’s exactly the guy you want on the field in a game like that. He is solid, capable, and reliable.
He might have even been underutilized.

-————

I was more worried about the quarterbacks. Being totally unfamiliar; I read the hype on them today.
Didn’t match up at all to what I saw on the field. Clearly their teams carried them to the super bowl and not the other way around. Neither of them looked like they were good for much. I still cant understand it.

Now, were the teams so evenly matched they just made each other look incompetent, or were two professionals in the Superbowl not all that much better than what we can see at the Jones on a Saturday night? I don’t have the answer.

Even Brady’s last minute attack is something we have all seen before, and we have seen it work – I was very surprised that he couldn’t pull it off- and he only had a few bright spots in the whole game, to begin with.

And Manning – how did the guy sleepwalk through most of the game with only a play here and there until the final minuets? That’s a super bowl caliber quarterback?

The rest of the teams were pretty darned good, but not particularly excellent. – I just expected more.

A closing thought, and for me – the most striking -is that we are so lucky to simply wander into Jones stadium and see the magic that we do so often, along with all the other big 12 teams. It really reinforces the idea that I am a fan of the right team. Go for a sentimental tour of youtube highlights of the Red Raiders, and you’ll see. We are even free of cheesy celebrities and hokey car commercials, but most of the time the goin band is worth the price of admission alone, if good football fails to happen.

Superbowl… Something I could do without next year.

No Hate here .... I love Wes and I felt bad for him as that play went down

It was not an easy throw. I just wish that as great as he is, that he had been able to pull that one in.

He did not drop a pass all season and I felt bad that those people that only watch the Super Bowl will remember that one play and not the thousands of others that Wes has completed.

Welker will use this to get even better.
I am hoping that as a Free-agent he is able to stay with the Patriots and finish out his career in high style.

Go Wes !!! Go Pats !!!

Well, technically, he dropped 5 this year. Not bad considering how often he's targeted.

In 2010, he led the league in drops. Again, partially a byproduct of having so many directed his way. Nobody will argue he has bad hands…he doesn’t. Just couldn’t get that one in the end. It happens. Would have been a stellar catch, for sure. But like even he said, he’s made that same one a thousand times before. Hope he gets a shot to redeem himself in a future SB. Would hate for him to have Buckner Moment tattooed to his career.

That's show-biz!

Wes missed a tough catch tonight. It would have been a huge play for the Pats, but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes. He’s the type of player who will use that as motivation to become an even better player. Wes will be OK-he’s a winner!

Play of the game

That drop by Wes was the play of the game. He should have caught it. If he catches it, most likely the Patriots win.

On that play, Wes looked very inflexible, like he was muscle bound. He did not elevate and never got his body and hands in good position to make the play. On difficult catches, receivers have to give up on yards after catch and sell out to catch the pass (it makes a huge difference). Wes did not do that and this made catching the pass much more difficult than should have been the case.

Watched the game last evening.

It was a fun well contested event.

Welker made a lot of nice plays, there is the one that stood out that he did not make…for that particular drive, early on there were about three or four plays in whick Welker was the one getting the action, smaller plays but all making opportunity for the later one…and for that one, geez, it was close.
