DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2012-02-07

ODDS AND ENDS | Totally Texas Tech's TTURed has already posted a FanShot with panoramic view of Rip Griffin Park and it's pretty cool to see it nearly complete. TTURed also posted a handful of new photos on his site with additional photos. This will be the last time that I do this, but there are photos of the Hance Chapel and like I said a couple of weeks ago, TTURed is documenting the construction history at Texas Tech. All of it.

Per LAJ's Don Williams, the future of playing Texas A&M is an all-or-nothing proposition, i.e. TAMU and TTU play between all sports:

"We discussed it with all our head coaches," Hocutt said, "and that’s something we as an athletic department and we as a group of coaches feel strongly about at this time."

I'm okay with that.

This article by Alligator's Army's Andy Hutchins is a bit dated (summer of 2011), but thought it was interesting to the extent that some schools hire their own in-house writers and also want to control information. I know that we tend to think that this sort of thing only happens at Texas Tech, but it doesn't, it happens everywhere, even to extent of asking that a person delete a re-tweet.

RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | There was this neat RaiderPower episode where the players talk about being in public and what it means to autograph for little kids and the importance of being a good role model.

This news was actually broken by D1 Nation, so give them a click, but Texas Tech has their first commit of the 2013 class in Liberty Hill F Blake Danielak:

At only 16, Danielak is 6’7". He’s athletic, can step out and hit the three, put it on the floor some and has nice timing as a shot blocker. He’s constantly working on his game away from the bright lights and is dedicated to his sport specific strength and agility training under the guidance of T.J. Garza of Speed Killz.

LAJ's Nick Kosmider talked with Danielak, who is averaging 16 PPG, 7 RPG and 5 BPG, talked about playing for head coach Billy Gillispie:

"The good thing is that it’s a Big 12 school," Danielak said. "Coach Gillispie is known for turning programs around. He did it at UTEP and at Texas A&M, and I really wanted to be a part of that."

I won't have any sort of profile on Danielak until there are some profiles that I can find. I also have not been able to find any video, so I really don't know what type of player he actually is.

I've got a preview coming up later today, but there's a game tonight against K-State, tip-off at 7:00 pm on the Big 12 Network. LAJ's Nick Kosmider has a preview and writes that the defense must be better. Here's Coach Gillispie:

"We have to be much better defensively," Tech coach Billy Gillispie said. "In the past we have had teams that have been very physical and very defensive oriented and we scored off our defense. We didn’t really let anybody get any offensive rebounds, and we’re totally opposite of that right now. But that’s what we’re working toward."

TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | DT's Brett Winegarner has the story on the three-way race for the shortstop position as the team will need to replace the Kelby Tomlinson, who only played last year at Texas Tech, but was darned good:

The trio of freshman shortstops consists of Tim Proudfoot, Matt Eureste and Bryant Burleson. Although opening day is Feb. 17, head coach Dan Spencer said the battle for the position is still ongoing and all three remain in the running to win the starting job.

"I think it’s pretty even because they all have strengths and they’re different from each other," Spencer said. "So I would hate to say there’s a frontrunner because if the guy doesn’t get the job then he thinks he did something not to get it."

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | Per Scout, defensive ends coach Robert Prunty was named the Midlands Recruiter of the Year as well as the Big 12 Recruiter of the Year in the Big 12. Congrats!

DMN's Mike Graham writes that QB Michael Brewer has gained 25 pounds and maybe added a bit of height:

"He looks a lot better," Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown told RedRaiderSports.com. "(Strength and conditioning coach) Joe Walker has done a good job and his staff has done a good job. He's put on 25 pounds since he's been here and I think he's grown a little bit also.

"He's ready. He's ready to push Doege and ready to prove that he's the next guy."

There were a couple of nice stories on two of the newest signees, DT Michael Starts and WR Reginald Davis. We'll start with Starts, and I think this is the school newspaper, so please throw your journalistic expectations out the window:

"My parents are behind me 100% whatever decision I make, and I felt comfortable with Tech, so I took an official visit and really liked how the whole town is behind the team," Starts said. "I’ll be playing strong-side defensive end and am looking forward to heading to Tech June 7 and settling into the freshmen dorm just down from Jones Stadium."

And from Piney Woods Sports, Davis apparently would have received an academic scholarship, but knows how important academics is:

"Even if I wouldn't have gotten an athletic scholarship I would have gotten an academic scholarship," said Davis, who is currently ranked No.4 in his class. "But this is getting to do something I like to do.

"The most important thing in all of this is getting a degree. If you get a degree you can do whatever you want to do, and getting it paid for by playing football is a great opportunity for me."

Love it.

ESPN's David Ubben I think attended the recruiting review and had some leftover thoughts in talking to head coach Tommy Tuberville.

And last, but not least per the DMN, QB Scotty Young is mulling a transfer to UNT.

I wonder what happened? Is Brewer and the new qb Nicholas better?

25 lbs!

Wow, it’s going to be hard to not take a good long look at Brewer this year.

That makes him about the same size as Doege now. Brewer was 175 and if he grew an inch he’s probably 6’2" ish.

I hope

we get to see more of Brewer this year even if he doesn’t start.

Thanks Seth!

Thanks for the write up Seth.. I’ve been posting pictures of the construction across campus since 2004 and the main reason I do it is so folks from outside of the Hub City can see what is going on on campus.

I started doing it mainly to quiet the critics who tend to trash Tech and Lubbock all the time.

Critics? If that's the case

Consider some shots of 34th st construction once it is underway/finished if you need a side project. A before/during/after series should show the improvement dramatically – but who knows what they will really do.

I’m also going to have to get out to Lowery Field. They are completely renovating the LISD stadium as well.

Danielek is 16 years old and a junior

who only averages 16 points and 7 rebounds a game for a 3-A high school?

Sorry, I usually am happy to leave the recruiting to the coaches, but I don’t get this one.

Does anyone know any more about this kid?

(PS: I am a BCG fan FWIW)

Well, it's only a verbal

but I don’t see much benefit in this sort of thing. (I recall Knight the elder once getting a commitment from a HS soph, but I don’t think he ever suited up.) The extent of BCG’s off-season roster moves may shed some light on how binding this commitment is.

My folks live in Liberty Hill and my dad is involved with HS officiating. Maybe I can get an unofficial scouting report.

by rednblackET on Feb 7, 2012 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

That would be great

Thanks rednblackET.

And for the record, I am not trying to criticize a 16 year old – just trying to understand the decision to go out and recruit him when there are so many other pressing needs on this team.

I played with a guy who gave a verbal to Myers after his junior season, but he was Mr. All-Everything in 5A, so that kind of recruiting decision seemed to make sense.

Unfortunately, this player could not make his SATs and never made it to Tech, but he was a star at the JUCO and NAIA levels.

Based on our summer league games and battles at the Rec, he was as good as any of Tech’s best players during the latter part of Myers’ tenure.

Some of the reports about the 16 year indicate that he is a really good kid who has the potential to very good as a bb player.

He has a reputation for working on his game and is already playing at a pretty good level for a 16 year old, for a guy who is as big as he is as young as he is.

I think I also read that he is a very good student.

Apparently BCG heard about him through a contact, happened to catch a game—or worked to see a game, and was impressed enough with his hard work to offer.

Like rednblackET said, it is but a verbal…a lot of things can happen between now and his particular signing day.

Here's my third-hand unofficial scouting report on Danielak:

- He scored 30 this weekend against the 2nd place team in the district.
- Height was given at 6’5" (vs. 6’7"), but it was noted that he’s still growing (though I don’t know how anyone can be sure of this). Needs to fill out.
- He appears to be equally adept at playing inside and draining 3’s.

Not sure if anyone will see this at this point, but wanted to follow up …

Congrats to Prunty.

And Neal Brown is growing less quiet about the upcoming season. He mentioned looking at film today of last year, but why not go back further for historical context? It’s a good idea anyway. He seems to have the right idea, and I am glad we still have him.

Scheduling A&M

I don’t get the logic of the all-or-nothing philosophy. Just because the football schedule is set, there will be no basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis …

I think it’s unwise for A&M to leave and it’s a disservice to the state they’re supposed to be serving. But in my view, they become just another in-state, non-conference school. Except that playing them generally offers: 1) increased interest due to the rivalry, 2) solid competition rather than an easy win vs. a cupcake and 2) higher attendance and better gate.

So, why boycott? Sour grapes? Leave that foolishness to UT.

by rednblackET on Feb 7, 2012 9:34 AM CST reply actions

Agreed

Besides, I’d almost rather beat A&M as an SEC team. There’s something that seems even more satisfying about that.

Football doesn't "need" the help

Well, maybe right now we do, but generally speaking, football can bring in the crowd. The other sports don’t draw as well, but if A&M still draws as an SEC team (I’m 50/50 on that one) then it makes sense to say “help all our other teams that need it, or ‘thanks but no thanks’ to us being MUTUALLY beneficial on the money sport”

by HeeroTX on Feb 7, 2012 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

I found it interesting that the was a common desire amoung the various coaches not to play them unless it was all sports.

I clearly do not understand the rational and would love to…they, the coaches have a reason, I suspect we might buy in if we knew.

A few thoughts
  1. Brewer putting on 25lbs? Growing? I would love to think he’ll be a bigger version (aka for prototypical mobile QB than say, Chase Daniels)
  2. Neal Brown needs to study film and determine WHY he tends to forget entire sections of the playbook
  3. Reginald Davis. Do his comments mean he will be at TTech for FOUR years? Would love to think so

1b. I think i like the idea of Brewer being the “heir” apparent and a wide open field behind him….a bare field though it may be

Regarding point 2

Looking at Brown’s offense at Troy and his offense here, to me it makes rational sense to lay number two at the feet of the HC. He is emphatic that we must control the clock and run more because that is the ONLY way one is able to build a championship team.

Obviously, I disagree. If your offense is able to put points on the board 2/3 of its possessions (on average) and the defense gives up points on 1/2 its possessions (on average), this team wins at least 10 times every year.

by Arizona Raider on Feb 7, 2012 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

I don't

think we disagree, necessarily…

I am all for (emphatically) controlling the ball/clock. What I mean is that the sections of the playbook that OCBrown would forget were, for example, the screen game all together.

There were games where we would not see one middle screen at all. Other times other sections, such as the slant game were forgotten.

Think about it. If you wish to control the clock, even an unsuccessful screen pass (completed behind the LOS, and advancing for little to no gain) keeps the clock moving.
