Red Raider Gridiron | Texas Tech Football Links For a Thursday

FOSTER IMPRESSES | LAJ's Don Williams writes that IR/RB Sadale Foster has very much impressed during practices and scrimmages this year. A good part of the story focuses on how Foster and LB Will Smith were high school teammates, so that's pretty good. Here's head coach Tommy Tuberville on Foster:

"SaDale’s got quick feet," Tuberville said. "He’s built low to the ground, but he’s not a small guy. ... I’ve been impressed with how he really has learned the offense, and the great thing about it is he can catch the ball, too. You don’t have to worry about subbing for a running back when they need to catch the ball."

And here's Foster:

"I like having the ball in my hands," he said. "Being able to play multiple positions is a plus for me. More opportunities to get the ball. The main adjustment out here is trying to adjust to the wind. It’s always windy, so catching punts is a little more difficult here than it is in Southern California."

I think Foster is going to be a welcome surprise, but I'm going to temper expectations and try to not get too excited. And as far as the wind and catching punts . . . #jokes

STUDENT OF THE GAME | Hat-tip to Raider1992, S Cody Davis is writing about his last year on a new blog called Student of the Game. It's good and it's worth your time. Davis writes about the past coaches and the fact that James Willis' 3-4 scheme was difficult to learn, Chad Glasgow's 4-2-5 scheme wasn't as complicated, but required perfection and the team was afraid to make mistakes, while Art Kaufman's 4-3 is more simple:

Art Kaufman is now the defensive coordinator and the defensive back coach is John Lovett. Ironically we are back to the 4-3 defense where it all started. So far the defense seems simple and I am impressed with the knowledge and experience of my new coaches. Many people always ask me how I deal with all of the changes and the answer never changes. I only focus on what I can control, so I don't focus on what has happened or why. I only know what is now ahead of me and the work I have to put in to be successful. Every year I go out with the mentality of winning my job and being better than the day before.

Pretty much this. I think I have the same hope as Davis in that the defense is improved and hopefully the experience of the coaches will play a factor in the hopeful improvement of the defense.

VIDEO, VIDEO, VIDEO | Although this has more to do with track than football, I very much enjoyed this Raider Power segment on RB Ben McRoy transitioning to track. I ran track way back in high school and had forgotten how technical running can be and never considered how technical it is at the collegiate level. I had also posted a link to the other Raider Power segment on the first scrimmage, but now the video is on YouTube:

Spring Football wraps first week with 85-play scrimmage (via techathletics)

VIDEO BOARD UPDATE AND ADDITIONAL LINKS | DMN's Mike Graham writes that RRS.com reports that an engineering study came back on a new video board and the building where the video board was to be is not strong enough to support the new video board. Here's Graham:

The simplest option is to install multiple piers into the building the board will sit on top of. The problem is the piers would obstruct the current interior of the building. There are other ways to support the board externally, but Texas Tech has not chosen a route yet if the university is going with that option.

I'll let Castle take it from here:

New video board...

Using my engineering knowledge the pier system would be the “simplest” solution, but I think he means cheapest. After spending a little more money to an engineering firm a design could come back after structural analysis calculations were approved and accepted for a dead load transfer of the stresses to a truss system to achieve successful support of the video board. It would be a steel structure, and not concrete piers, that is way more complex in design and drive costs up quite a bit more then the “simple” solution. Why can’t people just say they want the “cheapest” solution?

Probably so

It’s always a cost issue when it comes to retrofitting a building. I tend to think adding the support columns to the interior could be the best or cheapest solution. The interior achitecture could be redesigned to allow for the columns of course.

Video board

Yeah, this sounds about right. Matches what I have been saying all along.
This is why they have not done it before – The screen itself is the easy/cheap part.
The south endzone with the DoubleT sign is the same story. They really can’t take either any farther without opening Pandoras box.

It’s a nightmare they have looked over several times, and really, the answer doesn’t change.
I suspect the easiest answer is, they will just demolish the building and put in something that will be sufficient.

Think of it this way, (just a guess) the costs must be close enough to a new building that on paper it never made sense for a retrofit, otherwise it would have been done a long time ago.

I was wondering why Hocutt was so optimistic about it since he showed up.
Maybe now he has the full picture.

by Raider289 on Mar 1, 2012 7:51 AM CST reply actions

might as well demolish and build a new one.

sounds like a good excuse to fund a new building.

by wreckem22 on Mar 1, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Might as well, maybe

It will probably cost more in the real world to do it- than the estimates anyway, so I would bet that a new building would be the least dumb thing they could do with least potential for overruns.

We aren’t talking about building a bubble here, and putting up a new North building might be a smart move, and has the least potential to be an economic boondoggle or create new problems that they really dont need.

For anyone that has the chance, take a trip to that north building on a windy day. It is a massive concrete thing that shudders from the scoreboard and equipment already there catching the wind- you wont believe how something as solid could feel like that. Lean against a wall, feel it in your feet.

Better yet, look into load calculations for wind. The forces for a new big sail of a scoreboard are eye-popping in a yes-those-numbers-are-really-correct kind of way.

I would just hate for them to try the retrofit, and get bit, and have it be a big dumb waste. No one needs that.

by Raider289 on Mar 1, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Judging from the movement alone, the idea of adding more weight and getting a much higher wind load to the existing building is simply proposterous. A new building may be best, I just don’t like the idea of concrete piers because well… I don’t trust concreted with vertical and axial loads. If they went piers, I would think steel would be a much better option. However, if they do piers they will have to anchor those piers what? 10’-15’ in the ground minimum? That gets costly.

by RdrPwr on Mar 1, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

Also consider

They are gonna have to poke stuff in the ground where traditionally the water table is high in that area, and the field is low. The Jones relies on pumps traditionally -to not have the field flooded.
I dont know what’s happening now with the drought, but putting columns into soup has it’s risks, too.

by Raider289 on Mar 1, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Retrofits are scary.

One never knows the real conditions behind the walls, under the floor, etc.

Running piers through an existing building and subsequently having a good building sounds a bit weird to me…

All this is way out of my field, I have seen enough retrofit projects that found surprises that make me uneasy about them in general.

In Louisiana I lived near a new 40 story building project.

They pounded concrete piers in the ground with a huge crane/pile driver looking thing. It was terrible to live next to for 6 months. The water table there is very shallow and it is still standing.

by wreckem22 on Mar 1, 2012 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

In the type of soil at that location, friction piles are the best option.

When they are designed correctly and installed correctly they work.

Can we get a new sound system by 2012 or is the sound system and TV board tied together? Because our PA system sucks.

Not sure.

I didn’t get to go to a home game last year. If it is fixed I would be super happy about that!

I thought I remembered a tweet about them redoing the whole sound system.

by TexasTechForever on Mar 1, 2012 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

The last word that I read was the sound is to be significantly upgraded with the video board.

As well as the camera systems, and control areas for getting the picture to streaming / broadcast facilities….to include basketball.

Everything is to be moved up to HD quality video and equivalent techology sound.

Whatever that is.

Me too

Also enjoyed Sadale Foster’s quote (wind). This young man has obviously done his research and has his priorities straight. No wonder HCTT speaks of him so favorably.

Davis has done a nice job of blogging.

He is in the unenviable position to have seen way too many coaching changes and remarked how that has retarded the team’s progress with all the changes and not being able to play reactively…too much thinking required.

It makes so much sense to me.

I think we have better athletes than we have seen on defense.

TM, Just a thought

I think i know why Tubs is so enamored by the West Texas winds. With those ears acting like a pair of sails, I would guess he has a heck of a time just staying grounded, much less actually coaching.

As long as...

Tubby promises not to make another idiotic western video, I’m ok with a video/audio upgrade. If he makes another one, or even worse, replays the one from last year, then we should stick with what we have. It fits the creative output.

Those media and marketing need to come up with something better ...

that video was super cheesy. If they want to keep the western theme, they need to create a compelling and inspiring story line with a John Wayne/Bruce Willis/Rambo/Rocky type hero as their central character.

Don't over look the PR game that might be going on here either.

All of these conversations create anticipation, awareness and create a need. (Of course we know that a bigger board is needed to keep up with the Jones’s) But this would not be the first time that a fund drive for say, a new building in the north end zone, was tied into a more popular current issue. Airing, what may well be completely factual information in just the right way can do wonders for an otherwise latent project’s urgency. Just a thought.

I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with that either. Lot’s of different ways to skin a cat.

The JUCOs

From CA seem to be making a big impact. Since they were on an undefeated team, that shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Here’s hoping the rest of the JUCOs have a similar impact. Guns Up!

I am fine with waiting another year or two for a video board

Just do it right, build it sturdy and make it look good.

That video screen, if built will not only be huge

It will also weigh almost as much as that building at the North end of the stadium. I would hate to see it go up, only to crash down from its own weight, crushing everything and anyone below. Bandaiding it up ther esimply will not work. I also feel that a complete design merging a building and the screen and the rest of the accessories thereof is absolutely the only way to go. And while they are at it, they can provide for any additional seating to be added at a later date that would close in the North end completely. That would give us our own West Texas Horeshoe Stadium. But, like mentioned above, there MUST be some great football put on display culminating in double-digit wins for a couple of years before any of this can realistically be warrented. I mean, why add those improvements if the stands are only half full most of the time? This is the season that will make or break this type of thing. If Tech tanks again it could easily be several years before Tech can consider such additions having any chance of being accomplished. Winning would bring in a lot more money from all kinds of resources than would losing, and these projects will need a lot of money.

Totally agree.

A new building that matches the rest of the renovations will do wonders for the overall look. constructing it so as to accommodate future seating expansion and connecting it to the new corner sections is a must. I could live with a huge “Red Raiders” banner (ala “Colorado”) on in the space where the expanded seating will end up some day.

I’ve always thought that the outside of the stadium surround that isn’t occupied by nice looking buildings should all be covered in tall brick arches that hide the guts of the stadium from view. Some of the greatest looking stadiums have tthe full surround facade and would otherwise just look O.K. (Has always been on my “After I make it big” list of potential donations) t’s taking much longer than I thought……)

It is as much about participating in big time football.

Lots of bells and whistles are required, HD screens that impress, eyecatching practice facilities, great sound, the latest field turf, out o sight uniforms and helmets. cater, cater, cater….

Crazy, but true.

You’re not trying to impress well reasoned, mature business folks that you have a great educational facility. You’re trying to convince a bunch of 15-18 year olds that you have some really bad ass facilities and football is the unquestioned king on your campus. If you want to be able to compete in the bigs, you have to be “All in” with this venture.
